When I decided to have my tummy tuck, I started researching board certified plastic surgeons. I found Dr. Yu to be one of the most experienced surgeons in Hawaii and scheduled my consultation. It was such a great experience from the moment I walked in the door. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! Dr. Yu was very informative and easy to talk to. All of my questions were answered and he also showed me pictures so I knew what to expect. Dr. Yu also explained the risks involved with this type of procedure, which was important to hear beforehand because there is always a risk when you have surgery. My surgery went well and I was very happy with the result! Dr. Yu and his team are amazing. They were very attentive throughout the whole process and I always felt very cared for when I went in for my post op visits. It was also really nice having the procedure done in a private facility. Unfortunately, I did end up having complications. :-( I had bladder retention and ended up in the hospital for a week. I had a longer recovery period than most because I was so sick. This is a complication that can happen after any type of surgery with general anesthesia and it was miserable, but I knew going into surgery there are always risks. I was having trouble with one of my existing breast implants. One of them was hardening. I knew I needed to find a qualified, knowledgeable, and experienced, Surgeon. I have had breast implants for over 20 years and knew my newly needed revision would not be a simple or routine surgery. I have worked in the medical field for over 30 years. I have knowledge and experience with regards to selecting a qualified "Board Certified "Plastic Surgeon that operates out of a "AAAA" Operating Room and also has earned current Hospital privileges. My research lead me to the right Doctor to diagnose my situation and perform the challenging surgery. I called Dr. Yu's Office and was immediately impressed with his front Office. All my questions were professionally and accurately answered. I made an appointment for a Consultation. Upon meeting with Dr. Yu and his staff, I was not surprised that it was all that I expected. He answered all my questions and thoroughly explained my options and possible complications. I scheduled and went through with my surgery with Dr. Yu and I am very pleased with my results. During the surgery Dr. Yu discovered that one of my implants had ruptured and had been leaking silicone gel. This discovery was not expected. Dr. Yu removed the old implants, took the time to completely clean out the silicone gel, and replaced them with new implants. Dr. Yu's staff was amazing. After the discovery of my ruptured implant, his staff filed a claim, for me, with the old implant company. Last night while having some wine and pupus with friends for the holidays, I shared my recent experience about Dr. Leonard Yu and Maui Plastic Surgery. They said what a story and that I should share it with others because other women should know. So here it is! I had been going to Dr. Yu for Botox or filler treatments 2-3 times a year for over a decade. Then this past year I experienced TWO patients showing their "before" photos with me in the reception room while they pointed to their faces and said "look at me now." This happened roughly six months apart - - - once in January and a similar one in May. Both were thrilled about their recent face lift surgeries done by Dr. Yu - and I'm guessing they wanted to spread their excitement in the moment. It was such a aha moment for me. If you've been to Dr. Yu and Maui Plastic Surgery, the office schedules appointments in a way that is pretty exclusive. In other words, there aren't patients typically waiting or opportunities to talk in the reception area. Anyway, I thought having two patients six months apart coming out of the offices into the reception area sort of jumping for joy about their surgery results from Dr. Yu and then "sharing" their photos was a big sign to me that it was time for me to do more than Botox and fillers. I knew it was time to do more than short-term stuff. What I loved is that these patients looked exactly like themselves but more like a retouched photo, but instead it was real - lol! After this, I decided to get a face-lift from Dr. Yu. In the meantime, I also did check out other plastic surgeons and learned that Dr. Yu is the only surgeon on Maui who is Board-Certified and a member of the top American Plastic Surgeon Association. It's the top credential and very different than someone who is a board-certified by an American "cosmetic" degree. I learned that Dr. Yu has amazing credentials to get this membership because you have to do a lot of surgeries and pass a lot of exams in front of experts. Personally, I think this is really important. I don't want someone trying out skills on me. I've heard through the grapevine that Dr. Yu is the top plastic surgeon on Maui and has done thousands of procedures here, including patients from other islands or the mainland. Word gets around. Okay. Here's my take on Dr. Yu. He is like a calm in the storm of emotions. He's reserved, low-key, yet you can feel his surgical brain looking at your face like a work of art. Instead of feeling self-conscious for once, I just let his expertise and experience be my guide along with my voice. One thing that I was glad about doing so much research is that I trusted how Dr. Yu is a pro and I felt it every step of the way. His surgical experience and personal caring becomes obvious through the consultation and the results He's totally up-to-date on so many of the new things I asked him about in plastic surgery and recommended pro or against certain things as being a good/waste of time or money, even procedures that he does He did recommend a slight chin implant along with my facial surgery which I didn't even think about, and I honestly didn't even notice a big change on that addition other than my face appearing more balanced because of it. I learned that chin implants are now super common and a good way to take away further jowl sags. Here's what happened: I did what they said to do prior to surgery. I chose the option to do overnight care, which was reasonable and great. The next day, even though I was told by Dr. Yu and staff I would be very swollen, I didn't expect how much! So please don't plan anything within a few days except hide. But 2 or 3 days after surgery, the swelling went down a LOT as Dr. Yu said, and after that, I was out and about. In fact, a week later, I was just protective of my face from the sun, not to do strenuous activities a few weeks, and I felt great. My advice is to listen to what Dr. Yu and staff (great) say because they are experienced and again, you are having surgery and some of us freeze about it. That's why I'm writing this - because I researched so much before my surgery then kind of froze when I finally committed! After my surgery? Dr. Yu saw me the next day, the next three days, the next 10 days, and a follow-up time again afterward, especially as needed because he said every patient is different. My experience is that he and his staff - Nurse Jamie is awesome too- really cares about patient results with their incredible follow-up. I really felt taken care of and a real person. My surgery results are like heaven - I could never imagine me to be this way again - so fresh and full vitality. Inside and out! Funny thing - so many of my friends told me about their surgery with Dr. Yu, and how their daughters or husbands are seeing him as well. We are lucky to have a plastic surgeon of this caliber on Maui. I probably am gushy about my surgery, but it was life-changing for me. Highly recommend. Dr. Yu is incredible! read more

I just happened to stumble on Kelly L. 's One star review on Dr Yu and it brought back such a flood of bad memories that I had with Dr Yu nine years ago. I was referred to him for a breast reduction from my dr., I'll try to be as brief as possible but there were so many things that went wrong, from me having to be taken to the hospital by ambulance from his office (as his operating room is at his office) for one night, to ending back in the hospital for 3 more days because of his negligence and him not wanting to admit he made a mistake. The pain was so horrible, I had to have someone drive me 3 days in a row to show him how infected I was getting & he kept dismissing me like having breasts look like red meat at the butcher shop is normal. Finally my dr. Called him & told him he had to call me and advise me to go to the hospital so I would be covered under my insurance, when I got there the e.r. nurse & dr. Both gasped at looking at my breasts & went and got a plastic surgeon who happened to be leaving look at me, he was wonderful & spent over an hour with me & my boyfriend explaining what must have happened. Dr. Yu has zero bedside manner, my dr. Who referred me to him checked on me every day, he only came on the last day because he had to sign the release forms. Years later my dr. said to me "I will never understand why you didn't sue him" and I told her I didn't want to get her in trouble for referring him to me. I also told Dr. Yu I did not want him taking any pictures for his book as I am extremely shy, but he took pictures anyway. He also claimed back then he was covered with HMSA, which was only partially true because that was only for the operating room part, which I did fight and win, i was even charged for the ambulance which he should have paid for as it was his nurse who gave me too much medicine through the i.v. to wake me up and didn't know what to do so she called for an ambulance. (Dr. Yu had gone home along with his anesthesiologist & left this poor girl by herself) So in essence if you are having something major done, do not go to this dr., if anything goes wrong he will not want to fix it or admit any mistake. Nine years later I do not regret getting a breast reduction as I don't have the back pain anymore but I do regret going to Dr Yu as I can still remember the painful burning of my breasts and the long recovery time to get back to normal and his condescending attitude. read more

Dr. Yu and his tribe are good folks. I'd had several clients over the decades have their procedures with him and they each looked amazing. So, I finally made time this year to do the deed. I had upper and lower eyelid surgery and brow lift on right eye. (Id felt self conscious about my eyes for quite sometime) I don't mind aging, but droopy eyes made me tired. Very happy with it. My first impression of Dr Yu was good based off a couple of people that had referred me. I am very skeptical of anything that I am not totally sure of & this being the first time I have ever done anything like this (Botox) I of course ask many questions. Dr Yu and his handy dandy side kick Jamie were very good at selling their products & assuring me that this is all very minor & safe. I signed his form paid for the procedure etc. I agreed to a couple places on my face that bothered me around my eyes & a bit in my forehead it cost about $1,000.00 I thought for the small amount it was rather expensive but was assured that this is the going rate of Botox I think it may have been 25 units I now know this was not true it should have been more like $350 to Maybe $600.00 at the most but that did not really bother me. I wanted to have a great result & know that its was being done by a pro, after all if you read up on the importance of a Dr that knows which muscle in the areas you want to smooth a bit make sure to do all your research make sure the Dr you choose really knows & cares about his work. Well I was nervous but I went ahead & proceeded he shot my face up with a numbing agent & then injected a needle in my face as he was doing this I became faint & tried not to be sick I told them that I was feeling ill & they snickered & said yep men can't handle pain I said no this is not pain this is more severe, he just kept sticking the needle in my face, I finally said OK STOP. I think then they saw my face & knew I was sick. I came home I was so swollen in my face & felt so sick. I felt like a jerk for doing this to myself but what really made me upset was the carelessness of this Dr. Oh he probably has no idea that I was sick for about three months one eyebrow was drooping and I could not smile showing my teeth, I was freaked out I went to see another Dr. & was told he went way to far into my muscle & the bruising was caused by him nicking a vein. I did some research during my three months of agony & realized if the Dr does not know which muscle to insert the botox in you can get a weird look which for my first time & only time I had. It took a long time to ware off & I was sick I mean nauseated headache could not move one side of my face or smile. I feel that if this happened to me & being a guy & really not having had anything like this done before that I should share my experience with this Dr. showing a little compassion would have been nice as I left his office embarrassed, stressed & nauseated I could not get out of there fast enough. Oh ya no follow up call to see how I was doing but I assume he will now know. read more

I had 2 face lifts with Dr Yu. The first was 17 years ago, and my most recent one was a month ago. I was very pleased with the first one, as I am with my most recent one. Dr. Yu was patient in explaining things to me, and his staff is warm and kind. I had almost zero bruising, and I recovered from both operations quickly. I look better, and I feel better about myself. I have had two procedures done by Dr. Yu. The first was an endoscopic treatment to my face, and it did not work at all. It was actually a total waste of money. The second was a treatment to improve brown spots on my face, and after a few hundred dollars, it did not make any difference whatsoever. Another waste of money. Even then, I returned to his office for further treatment as there are so few options on Maui. He was extremely rude to me and refused to see me further. Is it that he considered me too difficult to please because I actually expected some results, however small, for the money I paid to him? Not an unreasonable expectation! He is extremely rude, not a person with any social skills at all, and not even a talented doctor. I found someone else I like far better. read more

My experience with Dr Yu was very pleasant. Dr Yu took the time to explain the procedures which I was contemplating having done. Dr Yu discussed the procedures in detail explaining to me all the possibilities that could happen both negatively and positively. Dr Yu explained my procedures in terms that I could understand, and was patient with me as I asked all of my questions regarding the surgeries. As I left my appointment, I felt confident that my questions had been answered, and that I could make an informed decision on whether or not to proceed with my desire to have plastic surgery. The staff (especially Jamie) made me feel comfortable when I was feeling somewhat vulnerable. She, like Dr Yu, answered all of my questions allowing me the confidence to move forward with my decision. I am very pleased with choosing Dr. Yu as my physician and with my results so far.
