My wife and I have been to Maui before and were looking for things to do on the island when we found Maui Sporting Clays. I had been clay shooting before but my wife never had. Dave, the owner, picked us up from our hotel and we immediately started swapping stories. He was very kind as he drove us to the shooting location which was in an extinct volcano. We got there early and he drove us to the ridge of the volcano while pointing out herds of deer that were running below. The views out to the ocean were beautiful and we got to sightsee a bit before beginning our shoot. The course was wonderful and well kept. Dave gave me expert advice and helped me break some bad habits I had. He was very patient and kind with my wife who had never fired a shotgun before and coached her to the point she hit several clays on her own! I will definitely be back. Dave was wonderful. An absolute expert of experts with firearms and mental conditioning. After scheduling, our party of four met Dave at the entrance to our hotel and he drove us up to his shooting range. On the way up, Dave pointed out all kinds of nature along the route and when we arrived at the range, we continued up the hill to the top of the mesa where we had an absolutely beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. When we started our shooting exercises, Dave did nothing but emphasize safety, the entire time. He was so kind not to get any of us flustered and each time we shot a round at the clay targets, Dave would debrief and talk to us about the ways in which we could improve our attempts with each and every shot. This was not just a trip out to see how many clay targets we could plink off, Dave taught us how mental conditioning applied to everyday real world scenarios and at the end of the trip, it was amazing how much I was able to mentally gain and apply. Our group of 8 had the best time with Dave today. We loved his valuable instruction, emphasis on safety and encouragement. We all hit many clays in several scenarios even though for most of us it was the first time shooting. The day was windy but actually perfect as we weren't too hot and spent the entire 3 hours moving from place to place for increasingly hard shots. Loved every minute! Recommend highly! read more

This was an incredible once in a lifetime experience that I'm so glad I got to experience. The views alone will draw you in but the life skills and lessons you will keep forever. As a new gun owner it's imperative to know what you do wrong as it is what you do right and Dave is an exceptional teacher at doing just that. This experience was so unique, my girlfriend and I highly recommend doing it. First off, the views are incredible. You are literally shooting guns in the crater of a volcano overlooking the ocean. Once in a lifetime experience and honestly some of the best views on the island. Please take note that google maps is incorrect with how far it is from town. They have a cut through private road that is only three miles to the top of the mountain. Now let's talk about Dave. He is so incredibly patient and knowledgeable on guns, he immediately gained my trust. I have never been shooting before so I was a tad nervous, but once he started explaining everything, I knew I was in good hands. When he took us out on the course, I thought I wasn't going to hit anything given it was my first time, but with his direction and coaching ability, I nailed at least 50% of the clays. Dave also told us incredible stories about the island. 10/10 recommend going and he is also besties with Guy Fieri who goes often!! read more

This experience was absolutely amazing. Dave is a fantastic host and instructor. He has been operating this course for 30 years and competed internationally before. He is extremely attentive and encouraging -- when we missed shots, he always knew where the shot went in relation to the disk and provided feedback on how to correct the next attempt. Dave was also very safety focused. Our group of 4 had 2 that had never fired a gun before and he gave detailed information about how to handle the gun safely. We felt very safe under Dave's instruction. The course was nicely designed with a variety of challenges -- much more than we could get through. The setting is also beautiful. It's nestled in a small volcano crater on a hill with a view of the ocean in the distance. In summary, would HIGHLY recommend this experience. read more

First off, you get there and the ranch is so beautiful and peaceful...Amazing ocean views, dear, chickens, pheasants. David was absolutely Amazing. He is a phenomenal coach. His background is extensive and you can tell as he can instantly pickup little things to help correct and tips so that you are hitting more targets.... which leads to having more fun!!!! We had a set group of seven of us scheduled for a morning of shooting that we were very much looking forward to. Unfortunately, Dave never showed up to pick us up, even after waiting for over half an hour. After repeated calls to the office, they were unable to locate him, and we were forced to cancel our planned activity. I've been up here to shoot 5 times in 5 years and can't give a better review. The facility is really cool, certainly world class. The views are absolutely stunning. The owner/operator, Dave, is an absolutely brilliant instructor. He has done a great job at breaking me out of some bad shooting habits. Also when I have brought up guests to shoot (that don't have experience), he has taken his time with them to give them a great introduction to shooting. Just visited him for the second time in 6 years. You aren't just paying to tap shoot you are getting to notch instruction. If you know nothing you will leave having learned a lot. If you think you know a lot about shot gun marksmanship you are this guy's little padawan you are getting a bargain master level world traveling instructor that will most certainly expand your understanding and ability. His teaching/coaching abilities are masterful. He isalso veryknowledgeable aboutall things hunting and all things maui. I will visit him on our next trip to maui. If you are lucky enough to catch him on Maui inbetween his global shooting clinics you must make time. Best vacation excursion of our lives!! If you have never done clay shooting, or any shooting for that matter, don't worry! The owner will guide you step-by-step so you will really feel like a pro. Everything is taken care of for you (down to the sunscreen). The owner is so kind and an extremely experienced shooter (he flies around the world to train the top shooters out there). Oh, and did I mention the VIEW?! It's beautiful! Definitely check it out!! What to wear: Closed toe shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Comfortable clothing. Loose t-shirt, tank top, etc. Clothes might also brush up against dirt so don't wear your most prized possession, but it's not too much to worry about. read more

This place is out in the boonies. My co-workers and I were invited to try trap shooting with our client. We played two rounds and it was a lot of fun. I've shot skeet before and little trap. The instructor was great and was all had a great time. The next time I visit Maui, I guess I'll have to bring my over/under and try it at the range. read more

Dave Barnes picked my friend (an avid hunter/shooter) and I (occasional recreational shooter) up from the condo we were staying at and had great conversation on the way up gravel roads through several gates to get back into a giant ranch on the side of Haleakala. He was very knowledgeable, experienced and respectful shooter, even talking about the other shooting/hunting opportunities on the island who was best to go for for different goals. We paid for the 75 shots package and had no idea that this was not going to just be sending clays up and trying to pop them, then on to the next station. Every station Dave talked us through what to keep in mind and how to prep, and after nearly every shot he had feedback for us on what was great or what to improve. And improve we did. Thank you for a great time, Ill be back when ever I'm on the island again! At first I though it was a bit pricey but had to try it out, Im glad we did, no way you could get that kind of direct feedback and training at that price elsewhere. read more

We absolutely LOVED Maui Sporting Clays. I cannot say enough good things about it - we had a great time! If you are staying in South Kihei, this range is easy to get to and well, well worth the trip. Beautiful scenery and excellent instruction. Even from the rest of Maui, it's more convenient than going to Lanai. My husband and I went on 12/26/15 with our 16 year old and 18 year old sons. We did the introductory package. Dave is an excellent instructor! He has won a bundle of competitions, has taught for years, and has designed skeet shooting courses across the world. All of this shows! He was able to address each of us individually and evaluate each of our strengths/weaknesses and work to those. By the end, one son was hitting the clays VERY consistently and my husband and other son were also getting surprisingly good. I have always been pathetic when it comes to hand-eye coordination but I was also hitting some in the end and Dave's insight into my habits (I tend to tilt my head a little) and their effect was illuminating.
