Sammy Scuba may not be the only scuba service in Lahaina but it's the only one we will use for several reasons. First reason - Sammy. He is very knowledgeable, patient, funny, personable, and fun. This was our daughters first ocean dive after being certified in Texas. The wife and I have about 25 dives under our weight belt over the last 20 years but haven't dove in about 5 years. We scheduled a refresher dive for us and a easy dive for her with Sammy Scuba. We met Sammy at 7am at the Old Airport Beach Park for a morning shore dive. Immediately, we knew this was going to be a good experience for all. He assessed our skill level and tailored the instruction accordingly. Sammy's equipment was clean, newer models, and in great condition. The weather conditions (not within Sammy's control I don't think) were perfect. On a large iPad, he showed us pictures of what sea life we were likely to see as well as the reef and route we wanted to take before donning our equipment. (Pro tip: Sammy noticed I had a new mask. These masks are coated with a film that needs removing prior to use. Sammy used a lighter on the inside glass to burn off the coating then toothpaste to clean the remaining soot. Then he applied a solution of baby shampoo and water inside for an anti-fog treatment. Best visibility of any prior dive.) We scubaed the reef and saw so much sea life. He pointed out spotted moray eels, sea turtle, trumpet fish, and so much more sea life. We had an underwater camera and he was able to get a great shot of us three that we will be a wonderful reminder of a great family experience. We couldn't be happier with the experience and Sammy. Scuba with Sammy was amazing. My wife and I are certified but haven't gone in 15 years. Sammy was great at communicating both above and below the water. The dive site was also tremendous as we saw eagle rays, turtles, eels, and lots of beautiful fish and coral. And while we were staying in Mākena, the 50 min north drive to the dive site was well worth it. If you are planning on a shore dive, having Sammy provide a privately guided dive is so much better than going with a group out of one of the companies and the cost is similar. OMG! Talk about a GREAT experience, hands down, this is where you need sign up. My niece and I are were not certified; my brother is, however it has been YEARS since he's dived. So we all opted to do a discovery dive. We originally were going to sign up with another company, only to find out that we would be with 20 other people and the cost was a bit outrageous. So we contacted a family friend and she recommended Sammy. We literally contacted him yesterday and today we went diving. It was seriously just the three of us that went. Sammy is SO damn personable, knowledgable and genuinely a great guy. The first time I did a discovery I was nervous and had no idea what to expect. Sammy was very thorough, even went over the fish we would see. For me, this was a huge help, as it allows you to relax more, knowing what you'll be seeing. We just returned from a family trip to Maui. The highlight of our trip was our dive with Sammy! Only 2 of the 5 of us had ever been diving. I love the water but definitely had some anxiety about breathing through the regulator, equalizing, and being below the surface. Sammy was super patient and explained everything in a very calm and deliberate way that made me feel very confident and comfortable. We managed to leave our GoPro at home, so another part of his service included taking footage of us and the things we saw on our dive. Sammy is the bomb! He was able to take me and my grandma (PADI certified) and my two brothers and mother (discover divers) all out at once and we had a great time! Care was taken beforehand to make everyone comfortable in the water. My mom who was a little more nervous than the rest of us, was put at peace from his experience with nervous first divers. This was our first time in Maui, my husband and I. I have done 1 scuba dive many years ago in the Caribbean and this would be my Husband first dive. I came across Sammy's yelp page which had 5 star review and read some of the comments in which I like because it is a private intro beginners dive. Compared to other dive companies that take larger group. We RSVP a 2 dive excursion with him. Sammy pick us from our hotel, drove us to the dive location BLACK ROCK. We saw, sea turtles , schools of fishes, different species of fishes and the best of all a 500 pd endangered species Hawaiian Monk seal which was 5 ft away from me! Sammy Scuba did such a great job taking our family out for 2 tanks of shore diving last week! We are a family of 4 including our 2 kids ages 12 and 14 who recently got their Jr. PADI certifications. Sammy did so well and getting us geared up with the right sized equipment that he provided. He gave us very clear directions on how to meet up and went over all details of our dives. He was thorough and patient to make sure everyone was comfortable and prepared to have a great diving experience. He is so familiar with the West Maui dive sites and how to work with conditions and mild currents, etc. The visibility was so good. We could hear the whales and see so much aquatic life. Sammy was skilled at finding octopus and we got to enjoy seeing a few of them which was rare for us when we have snorkeled in the same areas in the past. The prices for his dives are very reasonable with small group privacy which makes everything so much better too! We could pay by Venmo at the end which was very easy to do. He was very flexible to schedule the days and locations that we could dive and was honest that some places weren't ideal because of rain conditions affecting visibility. I can imagine some people might go out diving anyways on a bad day regardless to make more $$ but Sammy is not that kind of guy. We will definitely dive with him again the next time we visit Maui! With no notice Sammy met us on a Sunday morning. Neither my son-in-law or I had any scuba experience. We did an off shore dive. His safety brief was short but thorough. We hit the water within 20 minutes. He ensured we both were comfortable breathing underwater and then guided us into the coral. It was a windy morning but we saw plenty of fish and a small eel.
