Learning the basics from our encouraging guide
    Rebecca S.

Weeeee! Suffice to say that I've never done anything quite like it, and I'm psyched to do it again soon. We signed up for the clay pigeon intro course and it was a blast...literally. First step was to get suited up in a stylin camo vest and ear plugs. Pretty sure the clay pigeons couldn't see us anyhow, but was nice to have the shoulder padding and extra pockets. Our friendly, laid-back guide loaded our shotguns on the golf cart - a slightly smaller one for me - and we were off to the first few "holes" on the 16-stop course. He walked us through the basics of spotting, shooting, loading and unloading our guns, etc. and then we were shooting. Aim, "Pull," Bam! Got my first one on the first try. Alas, it wasn't a sign of what was to come. We practiced with the guide through the first 3-4 holes and then he sent us out on our own, which we thought was a little crazy. We ended up doing 8-9 total. The clays at each hole mimicked the flight of a different bird - and one had rabbits that spun across the dirt. I did better than I thought overall, and it became more and more addictive. I was scared of the kickback, but my shoulder didn't hurt at all afterward. This is not a cheap activity, but it was totally worth it. They have kama'aina rates, so remember to ask if you're a local. The team was exceptionally friendly and the woods were really pretty - a part of Lanai you might miss otherwise. Only 5 mins from the Four Seasons Koele via their van.

What do you call the pellets that come out of a shotgun? Fowl Balls

This is a must for first time shotgun shooters. Come visit Lanai on the ferry and book a package with the Four Seasons. Totally worth it! Plus we got to chill at the Four Season's with a day pass afterward. We lived and ate like the kings for a few moments without having to fork over the $1K per night. Shout out to Derek for being an amazing guide!

Dennis coached my wife, 10-year old daughter, and I, to be confident archers, all while having fun. They give you a small crystal pineapple if you hit the paper pineapple with 6 of your arrows after practicing for a while. I did it! No previous experience. Expensive, I guess, but really fun! Dennis was fantastic, and we didn't spend a lot of time waiting around. Though if we had, the grounds were really nice. Do it!

    So green and plush

Never shooting a gun before, our guide Derek, was an amazing teacher from practicing safety to improving my accuracy in shooting. Derek made the experience fun for both of us. It was amazing to see the difference of landscape in each of the targets. The views from being in the middle of the forest to overlooking the top of the trees, never a dull view.

On the way up, Dave pointed out all kinds of nature along the route and when we arrived at the range, we continued up the hill to the top of the mesa where we had an absolutely beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. When we started our shooting exercises, Dave did nothing but emphasize safety, the entire time. He was so kind not to get any of us flustered and each time we shot a round at the clay targets, Dave would debrief and talk to us about the ways in which we could improve our attempts with each and every shot. This was not just a trip out to see how many clay targets we could plink off, Dave taught us how mental conditioning applied to everyday real world scenarios and at the end of the trip, it was amazing how much I was able to mentally gain and apply. We will most definitely be returning to see Dave on our next trip to Maui! By far this trip was the highlight of our trip to Maui!!! Thank you so very much Dave!! You're amazing!!!

Dave, the owner, picked us up from our hotel and we immediately started swapping stories. He was very kind as he drove us to the shooting location which was in an extinct volcano. We got there early and he drove us to the ridge of the volcano while pointing out herds of deer that were running below. The views out to the ocean were beautiful and we got to sightsee a bit before beginning our shoot. The course was wonderful and well kept. Dave gave me expert advice and helped me break some bad habits I had. He was very patient and kind with my wife who had never fired a shotgun before and coached her to the point she hit several clays on her own! I will definitely be back. If you enjoy shooting clays or if you are interested but never have, Maui Sporting Clays is the place to go!

I saw a staff member (older heavier set guy) yell at some kids before they even started shooting (one kid had just picked up a gun and hadn't even inserted a magazine) and threaten to kick him off the range. Kid was clearly a beginner but he wasn't doing anything wrong and giving him a negative experience isn't going to get him interested in shooting for the rest of his life. That staff member clearly didn't want to be there which kinda begs the question why even show up (I think they're volunteers and not paid). If you don't enjoy what you do, I'm sure you can find better things to do on a weekend. But overall the experience is fine. You just have to watch for the staff members who like to lord power over people and ignore their attempts to try and embarrass people.
