Long story short, I live in Los Angeles and happened to find a vehicle I was interested in purchasing in San Diego. While searching through Yelp, I happened to come upon Maverick Motorworks. Spoke with Michael and he got me all set up for a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) that same day. Upon first contact, I knew I made the right choice as he explained the process thoroughly and I was sold. Unfortunately, the report showed a ton of issues with the vehicle and Michael gave me a call explaining everything down to the last problem as well as a detailed report the following day. I was absolutely blown away as I've never received a PPI this detailed. Saved me a headache of driving 2 hours to inspect the car myself. Fast forward to a few days later. I actually ended up finding another vehicle in San Diego yet again and it was a no-brainer; contacted Michael again and he set me up with a second PPI. This car was in absolutely better shape physically and mechanically and he couldn't stress that to me enough. He gave me another detailed report as well as his personal opinion coming from a mechanical background which did help me feel like I was making the right choice. There are no words to express how grateful & pleased I am with this establishment. Michael goes above and beyond to provide unparalleled service to his customers. I needed a brake job on my Audi SQ5. But there was a catch... I needed it THAT day. My schedule has been beyond unmanageable, and when I recently decided to purchase my SQ5 at the end of my lease - and thus wasn't going to be handing it in to the dealer with its nearly exhausted brakes - I had to find someone fast, and the dealership was booked out for days. I called a few places only to be turned down because they don't work on European cars or because my time requirement of TODAY (it was 1:00pm at the time btw) was impossible for them, which was totally understandable to be honest. Then I called Mavericks. Michael picked up the phone. "Bring it in" he said. Ok, longer story short: he said they'd be working until 8:00pm that day and said my brakes would be done by then. Worked with Michael for the last few months during the process of buying a used car. After doing some research and calling a few shops in the area for information on a pre-purchase inspection (PPI), I gave Maverick Motorworks a call. Michael offered some advice on the cars I was looking for and provided in-depth information about his process for PPIs. He even offered to have me bring a car in over the weekend because I was unable to make an appointment during his normal business hours. I ended up finding a couple cars to look over and stayed in touch with Michael about setting up an inspection. One of those cars ended up falling through last minute (right before the scheduled PPI) and Michael was understanding of the variability of used car sales. I was surprised how lenient he was about the last minute cancellation, especially on a weekend. Fast forward a few weeks, I found a car that was worth checking out and scheduled another PPI with Michael. I grew up with a father who was a big believer in Do It Yourself projects. If he could figure out how to fix it, then it was worth his time to do it himself. I followed in that mindset for quite some. I have spent countless hours on creepers under vehicles and hunched over motors, until I met Michael and Maverick Motorworks. With my knowledge of vehicles and part costs, I am often turned off by mechanics trying to up-sell me or feed me lines of BS on what my vehicle "Really Needs". I took my BMW to MM several months ago for an inspection of an oil leak. Several hours later Michael called me with the "news" and for the first time I got a straight answer from a mechanic (No BS). From there I assumed that honesty came with a pretty big price tag. Surprisingly, every price he quoted was better than any other garage I have ever been to in San Diego. OEM parts from the dealer even seemed to be at cost (no mark-up). Based on those two things alone I was willing to give MM a shot. I took my car in for service; which wound up being rather extensive, and Michael promised me it would be done by Friday. Well, Friday rolled around and I got a call from Michael telling me that things were taking longer than expected but he would stick to his word and get the job done by the end of the day. The MM team worked on my BMW till 7:30 that night and completed everything flawlessly. If there is one thing I like more than honest work, it's keeping your word. I had the pleasure of getting in contact with Michael at Maverick. We were traveling from Vegas to have Michael do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) on a classic Porsche. Michael has always responded quickly and efficiently. He was prompt, on time, and showed up at the requested location. We paid just under $300 (well worth every penny), for a 4 hour inspection on the vehicle. We didn't ask for the 4 hours, it shows how meticulous he is. Michael had 1.5 pages of must-do (now), must-do (later) recommendations that he went over each and every suggestion. This was also followed up with an email and receipt of purchase. Although (with his advice), we decided on not purchasing a "project car" (which isn't) what we were looking for (to begin with). If anyone ever needs a PPI in San Diego there's no one better. I've lived in nine different places in the last eight years, and because I'm extremely picky about my car, I've spent a lot of effort during that time looking for honest mechanics. I can honestly say, bar none, Mike and Ryan at Maverick Motors are THE BEST mechanics I've come across to date. HANDS DOWN. Here's why Maverick Motors gets 5 stars: 1. First Impressions: You're going to be taken care of, and you are going to be able to explain exactly what kinds of problems you're having. Mike is VERY attentive and makes sure he garners as much information as he can about the problem. He won't try to sell you on anything you don't need, and he won't treat you like an idiot. If you're a gear-head and you work on your own car, he respects that and will allow you to explain what you've tried, what has worked and what hasn't. He'll even offer advice as to how you can gain performance (if thats something you're interested in). Beyond that, before he does any work, he'll tell you what he thinks is necessary and what he thinks isn't and won't do anything until he checks with you. 2. He's honest about prices, parts and labor: Mike gives a rundown of exactly what its going to cost in order to do certain maintenance. His prices are very reasonable, and his work is careful. He sticks to his timelines, and charges only what he said he would charge you. No extra fees, no hidden costs. Honestly, I would have paid 50% more just because his customer service is that good. 3. They actually care: When I initially brought my vehicle to Maverick, I ended up pulling it out of the shop again to go on a trip. I had an intermittent problem with the car, and I didn't have time to fix it prior to leaving. During my trip, I received a personal email from Mike about a half a page long explaining that he had been thinking about my issue. He offered some advice, some possible explanations for the problem I was having, and asked about the history of the car to see if he could gain more information and offer a solution. Honestly, I had never received that kind of customer service. I was impressed. Needless to say, I was very happy to take it back to him, because I knew he actually cared about the problem. 4. They fix the problems they say they are going to fix: Everything that I've had done with Mike and Ryan has been done right. He even dissuaded me from replacing and adding parts that I didn't need (saving me money). But, even if he couldn't fix a problem, I'm EXTREMELY confident that he would be up front and honest with you and wouldn't ever try to cover it up. You're not going to be misled, manipulated, or lied to, period. Its actually really strange for me to be this passionate about a review on YELP, but honestly, Maverick was an absolute breath of fresh air. I can't say enough great things about this place. Just the service is reason enough to go there. When I picked my car up most recently, I spent almost a half hour, just talking to Mike about the different cars he owns, the way he runs his shop, and what kinds of performance upgrades he can do. Took my car in because it was stalling and I didn't know why. They did a diagnostic and found there was one component that needed to be cleaned and kept me in the loop. They didn't make up any false damages or try to overly sell any services other than letting me know its close to an oil change and a few other things which they told me were optional. I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu that has needed very little work during these past 7 years of ownership. Recently, I started noticing funky electrical functions, and decided I should take it in to get it looked at. Because I was about to make a big international move, I asked Michael to do a once over to see if anything else needed to get fixed. He did a great inspection and found a few other things that had been quietly going on: one thing that could have had big effects on transmission long term, and another thing that could have dangerous wheel safety implications. He explained everything in detail, in ascending order from most important to least important to get done promptly. He gave me estimates for how much everything would cost, so that I could make an informed decision on what to prioritize fixing. While he explained everything thoroughly, I never felt pressure to get extra work done, he gave me the information and let me decide how I wanted to proceed. I know mechanics have a pretty bad rep but THIS PLACE IS LEGIT! WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I found maverick motorworks via the recommendation of a fellow yelper. We spoke on the phone briefly the day my car's check engine and maintenance required lights went on. I was worried my car was going to explode, mike reassured me my car wouldn't explode and to bring it in the next day for a diagnostic and test drive. the shop is small, in the back alley next to a hare krishna temple and it was packed with expensive foreign cars like Bmws Mercedes-Benz, audi vw and i think I even saw a Porsche which shows he knows what he is doing. mike found the problem on my car and dealt with that problem directly. he got my car up and going for super cheap. he treats the rich and the poor (such as myself) alike. He is HONEST AND A GREAT MECHANIC! He has only been there for a few months but it seems that people from as far as Carlsbad drive down to his ship. I had a laundry list of work to be done to my 2000 Infiniti and over the past year I would get quotes from mechanics to see who would offer the best price. By far, this shop gave me the best deal! I had to have my front axle replaced and Mike at Maverick charged me HALF of what some of mechanics quoted. I took my car in because when I would brake my whole car would start shaking, I was expecting to go in and need a whole new brake job. I heard back from the mechanic quickly, he let me know that he could fix the problem without charging me for a full brake job since my brake pads looked like they were recently replaced (I bought the car used). He gave me options and had the pricing available for all of them, and gave me his recommendation which was the least expensive option!! While my car was there I also had the transmission fluid replaced and the price was extremely competitive.
