I have a very strong sweet tooth, and one of my favourite categories of treats is the humble donut. Unlike other baked goods which have seen a massive renaissance in recent years though (I'm looking at you, cupcakes), I feel like donuts still haven't quite hit their stride. I've tried many a vaunted bakery and highly-reviewed gourmet donut store (including SuzyQ) but I've never really been blown away. The toppings at these place are good but the donuts themselves are hardly extraordinary and I've always been left feeling a little disappointed. And especially after considering the premium prices, it's usually a better bet to just go to a Country Style. Enter Maverick's. I was lucky enough to pass one of their stalls at a farmer's market and decided to try a donut. I couldn't believe it. I'd finally found a gourmet donut worth having! Let me try to explain a little. I feel like you can break down donuts into two camps. First, there's the light and airy kind, of which Krispy Kreme is the undisputed king - these little babies blow any other donut out of the water, fancy bakery or not. The second camp is the heavier, more cake-like variety which bakeries tend to serve. As I mentioned earlier, Country Style does these fantastically, and I would have given them the crown until I ate here. The donuts at Maverick's have an ever so slight crunch to the outside, the dough is sweet without being overpowering, and the inside is soft as a pillow. There's a satisfying dense-ness to it that is just so perfectly balanced. It's a donut that doesn't need anything on top of it to hold its ground but if you want toppings they've got you covered. There's a plethora to try and I look forward to finding my favourite (caramel coconut is the best I've tried so far). Additionally, the toppings aren't too "loud", which is something I could cry in relief over. Too often with baked goods now you get the baked layer and then three inches of ridiculous topping - seriously, if I want a whole chocolate bar on top of my cupcake, I'll just buy my own separately. Maverick's does toppings properly. If you haven't tried this place yet, please do so. It's become one of the few places in Ottawa I would say is a must-visit and it is one of the best donuts I've ever had in my life.

Had to check out a few doughnut places during my trip to Ottawa and I happened to conveniently stumble upon Mavericks in the Byward Market. The shop is located just behind some of the fruit vendors and they had a fairly decent selection, including ice cream sandwich doughnuts- I wish i had seen these before I bought mine haha. I feel like I need to start off by saying the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is cause I have come to the conclusion that I don't love cake batter doughnuts. I always find them too dense but, also with that said, these ones are the best cake batter doughnuts I have had. I chose a chocolate peanut butter doughnut and it was rather tasty. The icing wasn't overly sweet and the doughnut was just the right size and had the right moisture to it. Sometimes cake batter doughnuts can be dry and crumbly. It was just the right little treat to eat outside and people watch in the market.

    So yummy

Really cool selection of doughnuts. We wandered in after lunch on a Saturday and the selection was still pretty good. The service was very friendly. It's a small shop and felt very full with the line and several customers. We only got two because we were trying to be good (kind of wish we were being bad that day!). The lemon ricotta doughnut was the star. Beautiful and the lemon flavor wasn't overpowering at all. The other one was a more standard chocolate flavor. Delicious but I wish we'd been more adventurous in our selection on that one. Aside from feeling rushed when ordering, it was good quality food and good price so we'd stop in again.

Great quality VEGAN donut option! 16.95 for 6. They tasted fresh and delicious. Wish they had one I. The East end so we could get them more frequently.

Super variety of donuts. Very fresh. Maple bacon, Lemon Ricotta, Vegan Oreo and many more unique flavors!

Incredibly soft and tender donuts. Cake donuts are ethereal, best I've ever had. Friendly service too.

Yes, doughnuts are really good, but 19,65$ for a half dozen, we can say it's overpriced.

Pretty solid doughnuts, well located, good freshness. What could you ask more? Try the one with the butter cream on top

Best donuts ever but the box gave me a paper cut. The cinnamon flavour was by far my favourite!

decent donut, but little bit expensive and smaller than the other donut shop. I will probably not visit here again.

I found the decaf Americano had too sour an aftertaste for me, but the orange chocolate chip cookie was good. The Long Version: I've heard of the Ottawa Bike Cafe and have been meaning to try it for some time now and have finally gotten around to it. My husband and I were on one of our "food and drink weekend adventures" where we go to a bunch of places that are new-to-us and get a little something to share at each place. Like a food crawl, lol. Anyway the Ottawa Bike Cafe was one of our stops. We got a medium decaf Americano ($3.70) and an Orange Chocolate Chip Cookie ($4). My husband liked the coffee and he rated it 4/5. He's more of a coffee connoisseur than I am, so his assessment on coffee is likely more trustworthy than mine, lol. I found the coffee bitter with too much of a sour aftertaste, but I'm one of those people who like flavoured syrup in my coffee (whereas my husband thinks flavoured coffee is gross and drinks his coffee black. We got the coffee black by the way). I enjoyed the Orange Chocolate Chip Cookie, although I only had a few small bites as the hubby ate most of it, haha. I liked that the orange flavour was noticeable. It was a nice twist on the traditional chocolate chip cookie. It was a bit too buttery for my preference and a tad too crumbly, but otherwise a pretty good cookie. Service was pleasant. The place was packed. Decor and ambiance I would describe as hipster cool. If you like popular places that are bustling, this is the place to be. I personally like quieter places with fewer people (although sadly this usually means that places I like don't always stick around). Our visit was in March. I imagine that this place is even busier in the summer. It's on the stretch of Sparks Street that is pedestrian only, so great for people watching if you sit by the window or on the patio during the warmer months when they have outdoor seating. Street parking only. Review #54 (2026)

Overall: A // 5 stars…read more I love the duality of this establishment with a full on bike shop, but also paired with intriguing speciality drinks such at the Blueberry Matcha Latte I ordered. The contrastive intensity of flavors from the rich bluebbery to the earthy matcha works incredibly well as neither element was watered down and held its own. Very impressive drink, would recommend.
