Good place for donuts. We tried their only two vegan donuts - one of chocolate and another one (I guess) was coconut. The donuts were quite good - although quite sugary. We even tried their coffee - definitely avoid it. It doesn't have any seating space inside so you can just take the donuts out and have it somewhere else - plenty of seating space otherwise in the other areas of the market. During the rush hours, it can be crowded but their turnaround time is quite fast (which means you also decide on your donuts fast, not to hold up the line), so not an issue there. read more

I've visited the Maverick's Donuts location in Parkdale three times, and every time I walked in the owner came out the back with a fresh batch. This was such a solid spot for donuts! Don't know why there's only one review at 3 stars. I was exploring downtown Ottawa and was recommended to try this place. The clean and aesthetic storefront had an awesome aroma. It's just a tiny store with no seating - just a wall full of takeout boxes. They have a really unique selection of donuts from vegan options, to classic cinnamon, to sprinkle, to blueberry...to the donut of the day (which when I visited was key-lime pie). I decided to get a dozen to share with others...awesome choice. If you get a dozen you get a 25% discount...but it is kind of pricey...I got an assorted dozen and tried 2 halves...the sprinkle donut was quite good, but I have to say the blueberry donut was awesome!! What really sets this place apart is the donut itself...so airy and fluffy - lightly fried and not heavy at all! Definitely recommend! read more

Finding good donuts around here is like asking a blind man to paint the sky. It's easy to accept mediocrity when it's all you know. You won't find bland dough covered in flavorless sugary regret at Mavericks. You'll find flavorful, well proportioned, and decadent. I have a very strong sweet tooth, and one of my favourite categories of treats is the humble donut. Unlike other baked goods which have seen a massive renaissance in recent years though (I'm looking at you, cupcakes), I feel like donuts still haven't quite hit their stride. I've tried many a vaunted bakery and highly-reviewed gourmet donut store (including SuzyQ) but I've never really been blown away. The toppings at these place are good but the donuts themselves are hardly extraordinary and I've always been left feeling a little disappointed. And especially after considering the premium prices, it's usually a better bet to just go to a Country Style. Enter Maverick's. I was lucky enough to pass one of their stalls at a farmer's market and decided to try a donut. I couldn't believe it. I'd finally found a gourmet donut worth having! Let me try to explain a little. I feel like you can break down donuts into two camps. First, there's the light and airy kind, of which Krispy Kreme is the undisputed king - these little babies blow any other donut out of the water, fancy bakery or not. The second camp is the heavier, more cake-like variety which bakeries tend to serve. As I mentioned earlier, Country Style does these fantastically, and I would have given them the crown until I ate here. The donuts at Maverick's have an ever so slight crunch to the outside, the dough is sweet without being overpowering, and the inside is soft as a pillow. There's a satisfying dense-ness to it that is just so perfectly balanced. It's a donut that doesn't need anything on top of it to hold its ground but if you want toppings they've got you covered. There's a plethora to try and I look forward to finding my favourite (caramel coconut is the best I've tried so far). Additionally, the toppings aren't too "loud", which is something I could cry in relief over. Too often with baked goods now you get the baked layer and then three inches of ridiculous topping - seriously, if I want a whole chocolate bar on top of my cupcake, I'll just buy my own separately. Maverick's does toppings properly. If you haven't tried this place yet, please do so. It's become one of the few places in Ottawa I would say is a must-visit and it is one of the best donuts I've ever had in my life. read more

Had to check out a few doughnut places during my trip to Ottawa and I happened to conveniently stumble upon Mavericks in the Byward Market. The shop is located just behind some of the fruit vendors and they had a fairly decent selection, including ice cream sandwich doughnuts- I wish i had seen these before I bought mine haha. I feel like I need to start off by saying the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is cause I have come to the conclusion that I don't love cake batter doughnuts. I always find them too dense but, also with that said, these ones are the best cake batter doughnuts I have had. I chose a chocolate peanut butter doughnut and it was rather tasty. The icing wasn't overly sweet and the doughnut was just the right size and had the right moisture to it. Sometimes cake batter doughnuts can be dry and crumbly. It was just the right little treat to eat outside and people watch in the market. read more

Place smelled a tad bit like sewer upon entering and overall a very tiny donut store. I had a few of the donuts to try and wasn't necessarily blown away by the flavours or looks of them.. Didn't seem as appealing to me from the get to be honest. Not sure I'd recommend this place again but I mean, if you're not necessarily picky about the flavours or donuts in general you should give them a try. Really cool selection of doughnuts. We wandered in after lunch on a Saturday and the selection was still pretty good. The service was very friendly. It's a small shop and felt very full with the line and several customers. We only got two because we were trying to be good (kind of wish we were being bad that day!). The lemon ricotta doughnut was the star. Beautiful and the lemon flavor wasn't overpowering at all. The other one was a more standard chocolate flavor. Delicious but I wish we'd been more adventurous in our selection on that one. Aside from feeling rushed when ordering, it was good quality food and good price so we'd stop in again. read more

Amazing cake-style doughnuts are let down by a smelly, cramped store. As another reviewer noted, my first impression of Maverick was revulsion - the store smelled strongly of sewer and cleaning solution upon walking in, erasing whatever appetite I had for doughnuts as I was cruising the Byward Market. However, the server was very friendly and the doughnuts looked appetizing, so I plugged my nose and opted for a cinnamon swirl doughnuts (saving it to eat when I returned home, where I had more room and the memory of the smell was sufficiently removed). The doughnut itself was amazingly good: a crunchy outside and a dense, sweet inside with a lovely glaze, almost the epitome of the perfect cake doughnut. I would be willing to try a doughnut here again, but perhaps at another location - the store in the market is not somewhere I would want to meet with friends or stand in line for any amount of time. read more

Small but nice selection, and great value as well when you consider the effort and expertise that goes into these little gems. I got the daily special, which was, if memory serves, milk chocolate with... I think it was strawberry. There was a dollop of a sort of frosting on top, the texture of whipped cream so "frosting" doesn't quite describe it, and it was delicious and not too sweet. OMG. Best cinnamon sugar cake donut on the planet. Hot and just fresh from the oven, pure donut heaven. Sometime simple is better. However other flavors were also delectable - lemon ricotta, coconut keylime. My daughter loved the cake donut with sprinkles. Not heavy or greasy like some cake donuts can be. Yummy! Sweet treats where you get a discount for the more you buy! A dozen assorted will set you back under $30 but when you have choices like salted caramel, strawberry shortcake, cinnamon bun and matcha favours, it's well worth the calorie count. read more

Best donuts ever but the box gave me a paper cut. The cinnamon flavour was by far my favourite!

The donuts are great - I prefer a dense cake donut to a yeast donut - but service is hit or miss and it's pricey considering the donuts are sometimes quite small. On my last visit, I purchased a coffee, but the self-serve carafe was almost empty so I only got half a cup. I pointed that out to the worker, who just said sorry and stared at me - didn't offer to make more, didn't offer a refund. When I asked whether I could have an extra donut or something to make up for it, she just gave me back $1 (half the price of the coffee). Naturally, my coffee was cold and stale as it had obviously been sitting out for hours and was the dregs of the container. When customers are paying $7 for a couple donuts and a coffee, you'd think you'd work a bit harder to retain their business. If I have a craving in the future I'll probably just get their products from Happy Goat and have a fresh coffee with it. read more

I enjoy a good doughnut. So I was excited to find this place. However I was shocked to pay almost $3 a doughnut. So I was like hey this must be a spectacular doughnut for that price; man was I disappointed. Was it good? Yes. Was it one of the best doughnuts I've had no. It was ok. I've had better doughnuts for cheaper. Mind you I've only had one of their doughnuts, a peanut butter one, but it didn't make me want to come back for more and that's disappointing. read more
