    Arctic Circle

When I was a kid on the east side of Provo in the 1950-60s, the Arctic Circle on 900 East…read morerepresented in my mind what a fast food place should be. Over the years I ate at various AC along the Wasatch Front. When an Arctic Circle opened up here in Smithfield I was thrilled. I had always enjoyed their halibut and their mushroom swiss burrger and well as their shakes. Not long after the opening I got a two-piece halibut dinner and was sorely disappointed. The substituted onion rings were good but the fish was dried out to the point of being difficult to choke down. A year went by and I tried the halibut again - same story. Dry and nearly tasteless, especially compared to a chain out of Wisconsin a few miles away. Finally, a few days ago I got a mushroom burger for myself and for my wife. I handed hers over and she said, "where are the mushrooms?" What we found was a 1/3 pound meat patty, some shredded lettuce swimming in an immense amount of mayonaise and nothing else. No mushrooms, only residual amounts of what has to have been the world's thinnest slice of cheese (Swiss? who knows? couldn't determine) and nothing else. No pickles, no onions, no tomato - nothing! Mine was exactly the same. I called the restaurant and the girl on the phone couldn't understand how that could have happened, with an element of scepticism in her voice. But she said she would mail some coupons. I have expected they would be the same kind I get in my mailbox every Thursday, but that was expecting too much. What I got - norhing in the mail - nothing, just like what came with the two burgers. Next time I want hamburgers I will drive the five miles to the place from Wisconsin or even just a mile to the place named after the redhead. In the first case, the food is vastly superior and the frozen custard shakes are excellent and really don't cost any more than an AC milkshake, and in the latter case, it isn't great, but it's better than AC and not far away, at all.
