Because of the pony walls, i could hear every single noise that was made while i was getting massaged, including loud timers going off at the end of other sessions, a toddler crying and being scolded, other customers talking to their masseuses, the door opening, you name it i could hear it. I saw a lot of good reviews for this place and it's in a great location so i had high hopes but the massage was one of the worst I've had since i moved to SLO. Obviously $60 for a 60 minute massage is a pretty good deal but there are several other businesses with the same/similar pricing that i have had far better experiences at. After walking around all day in SLO, my feet were killing me like no other. My feet seriously needed some love, so I did a Yelp search for massage parlors nearby. Max relax popped up and after reading some of their glowing reviews, I decided to give them a try. I don't get massages very often and I didn't really know what to expect when I came in. I was greeted right away and was given a list of massage options. I ended up choosing their 45 minute foot and chair massage. I was taken to a dark communal massage room and was given another menu with foot bath options to choose from. The masseuse recommended that I go with a Chinese Herbal Foot Bath. While my feet were soaking, the masseuse gave me a 15 minute back and upper body massage. He applied great pressure and provided me with instant back relief. I honestly wasn't even expecting to get an upper body massage too, so this was a real treat. The best part of the upper body massage was when he massaged my neck. You really don't realize how tense your body is in certain areas until someone is focusing on it. I was definitely falling asleep in that chair! The max relax was in session! Since this massage took place in a communal room, the massage was completed with my clothes on. I loved that they use timers here. There's no doubt about how much time was spent because the timer keeps track of it all. The foot massage was wonderful! The masseuse really took his time and it didn't feel rushed or painful at all. I was generally relaxed for the duration of the massage. I had the communal room to myself for the majority of the session. The only thing that was kind of annoying were the interruptions. There weren't a lot of them, but there were quite a few. They tried to be as quiet as possible, but I could still here noises from the other massage rooms during my massage. VERY budget massage. Kind workers, smiling, friendly, $40 for 30 min full body deep tissue massage. Rooms are semi private - top of wall stops about a foot from the ceiling so you can hear others in the room next to you. Communication struggles due to language barriers. Worst part was the basic bed set up, face rested on a paper towel . Best part was the hot towel at the end used to wipe off the oil on my back- felt wonderful. I love that they had a male front desk worker at night I felt safe. Second the price is great! Lower price but this just means you can tip your masseuse more. Third, I will be honest and I hope the owner reads this with kindness. The wall are dirty... the space is not messy but it is not fully clean. And if the curtains could be one solid color. We have been going to Max Relax for over four (4) years and every time it is spot on, normally getting the Chair & Foot Massage. Well they have been closed for over two months because of Covid, and just reopened. I believe it is under different management, as I did not recognize the front desk person or the two other people working. The man assigned to me didn't understand what I was asking or wanted, then wasted 10 minutes soaking my feet BEFORE starting the foot massage. After the foot massage he had me sit in an actual massage chair which I haven't done before in this place. Normally my combo massage is in the middle room with the overstuffed chair and ottoman. For four years, the masseuse would put my feet to soak, soak, start the Chair massage, about 30 minutes later they would switch to the foot massage, then finish up the Chair, it was perfect. The prices went from $35 to $59 which is still reasonable but I didn't like the wasted time. I will go back but next time I will make sure that whoever I get understands the type of massage and doesn't leave me sitting for 10 minutes, and no metal massage chair for me. read more

So....The massage was on the lower end of OK. I felt fairly comfortable in this place, it seemed tidey enough and everyone had masks on. I went on a rather hot afternoon, probably a mistake. The linen and towels are that itchy, scratchy (no not from the Simpsons) fabric making laying there not that great, especially with a mask. The guy that massaged me was not great, he had a couple good techniques but overall was uneventful, untrained, uninterested. He let out a pretty large burp during the massage, and answered his cell a few times to book other appointments. At some point late in the massage he switched, a female came in, she was better but it was literally 10 minutes. My experience was okay, but something that I'll never forget. I went yesterday (09/20/23). I have had multiple massages done at different locations, and this is the first one where I woke up SORE the next morning. I went with a group of friends, and for all of of us the technicians were extremely heavy handed. The gal that did my full body almost seemed to be trying to detach my skull from my spine. She would hook her fingers around the base of my skull at the back of my neck and would pull repetitively. This hurt and was very uncomfortable. I have been having headaches since my appointment yesterday, and my neck is very tender. I also noticed immediately that the face hole in the table smelled unclean, almost like someone had been breathing through their mouth onto it. The bedding looked clean, but the towel and bedding smelled awful. On a good note, the staff was very nice and they were very flexible with working with large groups. They were very attentive to making sure that there were enough beds and employees to complete all of our massages at once, and they texted to check in and confirm appointment information. The majority of the rest of the massage was okay, but she was continuously being heavy handed. I expect a little heavy handed-ness on some parts, but not the entire thing. If you like to really be able to feel the massage the next day then I would recommend this, but I personally wouldn't go again. read more
