Interesting place. The interior could use an update and some coordination. There doesn't seem to be a cohesive theme. A little organization could help the seating and add more tables as well. We waited for about 20 min for a table, but there seemed to be several people working (they were talking at the hostess stand). Our server was very friendly and he helped answer our questions. This is a gluten free safe haven in Kirksville. I have celiac and get accidentally glutened in Kirksville frequently. It is what it is, but there are a few gf gems! This is me and my boyfriend's favorite date spot. He always gets the jalapeño burger with added bacon and I usually get the veggie burger or fried fish. Both are always delicious! I don't remember his name, but the tall man who wears cat headbands often is our favorite server and we always look forward to seeing him and chatting about our cats. Food usually comes out quickly, and the inside of the restaurant is charmingly decorated. It's the epitome of a good local restaurant. TLDR: Huge beer and whiskey selection, in the hundreds. Sandwiches and salads. Pleasant vibe. You can play board games if you want, and they have a weekly trivia night. MENU: Mainly sandwiches and salads. Lots of potato stuff. Focus is on the beverages. FOOD QUALITY: Everything I've had here has been fresh and well made. One tip I'd offer you is: if you order a dessert to go, ask them to leave out the wax paper. When they put a slice of pie or cheesecake in the styrofoam clamshell, they lay it on a folded piece of paper, and most of your sauce and whipped cream is going to be irretrievably trapped in the folds. If you ask them to leave that out, no problems. (If the management reads this, please consider ditching this practice. I'm assuming you're trying to make it easier for folks to extract the serving from the clam shell, but it isn't necessary.) MENU FAVORITES: Maxwell's is the only place in Kirksville, that I know of, where you can get fried catfish - either in a sandwich, or just on its own. Try the homestyle potato chips. I'm a big fan of the peanut butter pie - leave it out on the counter for a couple hours to let it warm up a bit and soften, and the texture will be so much better. MENU FAILS: Skip the sweet potato fries. They cover it with cinnamon and sugar, AND serve it with a caramel sauce. I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat sugar on top of sugar as a side to a burger. (I suppose they would leave the sugar dusting off on request, and swap the caramel for sour cream or something, but I've never attempted that.) FRONT OF HOUSE SERVICE: I always get food to go, so I haven't experienced dining room service here. From what I have encountered, the staff is friendly and helpful. It seems like the staff is instructed to give out longer wait times than necessary - they usually say it will be about twenty minutes, but there have been times when the food was ready in as little as about seven minutes. Shout out to the hostess with the buttery phone voice. KITCHEN SERVICE: The food is nearly always well made. The only bad experience I can recall is on one occasion in which the crust on my fried catfish was soggy, as if it had been fried in advance and left sitting under a cover to steam. COMPETITION: I'd say the most comparable place is the Dukum Inn, which has a pretty mean burger. I'd say the food quality is about the same in both places. Both are worth a visit. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is clean and pleasant. If you like bars, this one is probably the most extensive in Kirksville. Really comfortable waiting area. Clean bathrooms. There is a shelf of board games that you can select from, if you want to play a game with friends and have a beer. After multiple groups were seated she sent someone to see if we had been helped. We weren't expecting this!! Met our family halfway between Iowa and Missouri, we decided to try this place out. Waiter/bartender was amazing, friendly, gave recommendations, just knew his stuff and you could tell he loved his job! I ordered a cheeseburger, cheddar cheese, cooked medium, side of fries with some beer cheese for dipping them in...well, I asked for more beer cheese to pour on my burger. The beer cheese is what dreams are made of! I will never go there and NOT have it on my burger and on anything I have there....lol we ordered some homemade peanut butter pie to go. At first glance, Maxwell's seems like a semi-upscale bar & grill. Then, they hand you the food menu. It's largely standard fare, but nothing really stands out. The appetizer menu is small, *WARNING: THE CHIPS AND DRUNK DIP IS A RIPOFF* there are far more chips to try and get less than a pea size amount on each chips. The fish and chips one time was catfish, and talipa on another occasion. There is no indication on the menu what fish is used, and the lone filet is a huge disappointment for the price. Besides the bartender, the staff looks uninterested and is inexperienced. The only thing that saves this place is the wide selection of bourbon and 14 taps. It truly is the bulk of the 2 stars in this review. Get drinks here, but good luck finding a delicious dinner in Kirksville, MO. read more

We Love their Buffalo Cauliflower Appetizer! Drinks are ample and yummy. The decor is appealing and it's appreciated that social distancing by spacing seating is respected! The Broasted Chicken didn't take too long to arrive, I had our waitress bring my salad out early so that and having good company helped time pass. Stopped while traveling through on our way to Southern Missouri. I had a breaded tenderloin and my husband a burger. Both were very good. I've never been real impressed after leaving Maxwell's. I've eaten here 3 times and the food has always been mediocre. My friend convinced me to try once of their salads last time as I've previously gotten a burger or fish, and I was not impressed. It didn't have much flavor and wasn't real fresh. Most of it was really good. Some was very bad. I came with my brother and 2 friends. It was really nice inside, a cool ambiance. It took quite a while to be greeted and seated, but our waitress was really nice. Kind of forgetful, though. I ordered the cauliflower bites, I've had them, before, and they're absolutely delicious! But she forgot to put them in for the order. So I didn't end up getting them. My friends ordered the beefy cheese dip. It was not my cup of tea, but they loved it! So, I would recommend you try it, for sure. For main meal type things, my brother got fish n chips, but got the diced potatoes w/ sour cream, instead of fries. Now, again, I don't like potatoes, so I can't say for sure, but he practically inhaled them, so I'll claim they were good. The fish was super greasy and not hot. So that was a bit of a letdown. Street tacos and chicken nachos were also ordered, both overpriced, but not terrible. I ordered a chicken salad with grilled chicken, no cheese or dressing. The waitress did not get that in, either. So I sent it back for the right salad. It took quite a bit, but came out correctly. The lettuce really wasn't the freshest, but it wasn't gross or anything. Pricing is higher per dad, but super great menu selection-did think there would be more burger options, but tons of items on the menu. I have been here two times. Both times the service has been good. Sweet people behind the bar or serving. They have been tweaking their menu and bar specials, but not quite perfected. I was actually impressed with the veggie burger last time I went. I don't typically ear veggie burgers but I didn't care for the chicken sandwich last time and the server recommended I try it. I came for a trivia night which is very fun when there is nothing else to do in Kirksville, but the drink specials martinis are below par. My friends and I were actually competing to see who could actually finish their drink. The wings are gross and the service really is trash. They ask you to wait to be seated and I was ignored by four waitstaff with a mostly empty dining room. There were three tables with people in the front and one I could see in the back. I finally had to flag one down and just ask them if I should just get my own seat.
