Went there for breakfast the other day and ordered the Famous Biscuits and Gravy special. Scrambled Eggs, Bacon ,and hashbrowns. It was delicous fast and friendly service. Food was excellent. Rating: 2.9 Stars I have been to Pancake City only once, and I was disappointed. As a pancake lover, I was very excited to go here. Because I love cinnamon roll pancakes and apples, I thought that the Apple Cinnamon Cakes would be pancakes with cinnamon and apples mixed into the batter. I was shocked when they were merely pancakes with gross apple compote poured on top. The compote and the pancakes did not complement each other well, and I really did not enjoy the combination. To be honest, I couldn't even eat the top pancake with the compote. Thankfully, I was able to eat the other two pancakes as if they were simply buttermilk pancakes with no compote. They were average and saved the overall rating of this meal. I need to come back and give this place another try. I will order either the buttermilk pancakes or the blueberry pancakes. I am wondering if the blueberry pancakes have blueberries cooked into the batter or if its is another compote on top. To be continued! read more

Pancake City during the day is just alright. Their morning/afternoon/dinner menu is larger and more extensive. It's also cheaper than their late night menu. But somehow, greasy food is just better after midnight. It gets kind of busy then, and you'll feel terrible later after eating there, but it's definitely a part of the Kirksville-college-student experience. If you get fries, always get Savory Fries--they're waffle cut! AND they have massive $3 rootbeer floats. You can definitely share that with multiple people. Pancake City is also the only place I've ever eaten at that has corn nuggets (which I embarrassingly admit I love). Ironically enough, I've never eaten their pancakes, but I hear they're mediocre. Racist staff(s) amongst them. We had a very diverse group of friends. The moment we walked in, all eyes were on us. It felt very unwelcoming. I was uncomfortable the entire time throughout our meal, since we were seated in a spot where everyone can just simply stare a hole into our backs. Now the part that got me the most is the racist male cashier/manager. He was wearing a lime green collar shirt and had a balding with a patch of hair on top, mustache and beard to match. We got in line to pay for our meals. There were two cashiers in the front, including him. Instead of helping the 2nd cashier ring up our group, he decided to grab the groups behind us instead. And then when he was done with that group, he grabbed another group and rang them up. I was the last one in my group to get ringed up and instead of calling me up and ringing me out to finish our group, he just stood there looking else where. I walked up to him but no response but when another couple walked up to him, he was happy to help them out. I was very appalled by his actions. If you're a non-Caucasian from out of town and wanted to have a good friendly family breakfast, STAY AWAY. I've only eaten at Pancake City a few times but every single one of those times I've left feeling very satisfied. My food arrived quickly and cooked perfectly. Portion sizes are very generous and my servers were always attentive and speedy. And all of that for a very affordable price. For a budget priced breakfast it's difficult to beat. You really can't ask for more for what you pay which I guess is why it's the most popular diner in town for the local college students. I also enjoyed what I guess you could call the "divey", unpretentious atmosphere. Not only does that make it a bit different but it's probably also why they're able to sell you a good meal for much less than you would pay in the city. You're paying for the food not the aesthetics. If I lived in the area I'd be there all the time. Oh... And Mikey Chen from the show "First We Feast" likes Pancake City so I'd say that's a pretty strong endorsement. read more

I guess it's a local version of Waffle House, even the sign is yellow. And when there's no Waffle House in the 100 miles radius this will do it. It's your normal breakfast joint with typical breakfast item and you leave the place covered in grease, also a common after effect when frequenting places like this. Food is good for what it is, the country ham is Hefty and I loved it. The one pancake we got in "the hungry man" was no joke an inch thick and fluffy. Here's a good rule of thumb: When you visit a breakfast diner in a small town with very limited options and it's mostly empty on a Saturday morning at 9am, don't set your expectations too high. It's dirty and dingy. Everything looks cheap like Waffle House's bastard step-child that no one wants. The staff try real hard to pull off a "hey honey/sweetie/sugar" diner waitress routine like they've seen on tv, but they fail pretty hard. If you don't eat or want meat, they'll gladly leave off the sausage/bacon/ham, but won't let you substitute any other side items in their place and still charge the same amount. It seems like a place that has spent years perfecting its "y'all ain't from 'round here are you" slack-jawed hillbilly stare that they reserve for every person unfortunate enough to be lured into what passes for a breakfast diner in a town where everyone seems ok with doing just enough to keep the lights on. Skip it. We had the free breakfast at the Holiday Inn the next day and it was way better. They have Cinnabon! read more

However, come into Pancake City as a non-Caucasian person, or as anyone not wearing classic small town folk garb you will most likely feel uncomfortable.
