    The view from our chairs

First, since none of the reviews I read mentioned this, I'm going to in case it's important to someone: there is a long shuttle ride from the port to the resort. The roads are terrible and it's super bumpy, and lasts about 40 minutes. It is covered in the cost of a day pass though, so that's great. Once that ride is done though, 10 out of 10! The staff were extremely attentive, super friendly and upbeat. They would literally walk into the water to take drink orders and bring them out. The drinks were good, the lunch was delicious and the massage was super relaxing. We had two beach chairs and an umbrella, with a day bed right behind to ourselves. There were no outside vendors asking us if we wanted to buy their things all day, which was really nice. It was a beautiful, relaxing, well spent day. We will most definitely return!

The service is Amazing. What a truly wonderful experience. They take you from right outside the cruise port directly to the Beach Resort. Great food, terrific drinks, beautiful accommodations and I will say it again...awesome service. What a treasure for day off the cruise. A MUST try.

The best service and hospitality that you could possibly imagine. Felt like we were royalty. The location is beautiful and well maintained. Awesome drinks and authentic food. Will definitely be returning.

I was here a couple years ago and loved it, so tried it again. You need to reserve and pre-pay. From a cruise ship we had to walk out of the port area about a five minute walk. You can't take the taxis inside the port area. Just keep going out the gate and maybe a quarter mile at most they have a place to check-in. From there they have taxis that are included in the price. The ride is about 25 minutes. They have a lot of options on the beach for sun or shade. You can find chairs, loungers, beds, hammocks, and so on. Food and drinks are all included. They have a taco lunch all freshly made with a lot of options. They are excellent! They also have Wi-Fi and numerous water toys available and all included. They have very reasonable massages too. If you want one make a reservation if you want to wait, they are very popular. When you want to leave you go to the front and they have taxis that will take you all the way inside the port. Very nice place to relax. The staff is amazing and the go way out of their way to make sure you have a good time!

This is absolute hidden gem. What an amazing staff with 5 star service. Relaxing tiki hut with chairs, a bed & a hammock. Access to their pool, kayaks, floats. Fresh made taco buffet with all the fixins. For the price you can't beat this experience. We will 100% be back. Easy walk to the meeting point, never once felt unsafe. Simply Paradise.

Key is attitude. Not theirs, but ours: I did min research, as friends chose it. My expectations were off, but the staff won me over. Also, running an indie excursion can't be easy. (excursion booking) * (Sept 4) Not sold out, so I can book late (for Sept 11). * Maya Chan's website *does not work* with Mac Safari. * Google Chrome works. * The webform says $79 USD. * (Sept 6) PayPal invoice from mark@mayachanbeach.com for $69. I pay via PayPal via credit card. * (Sept 8) Email from mayachanbeach@gmail.com (also including owner Mark Ostrow, mostrow@aol.com). Mark includes his cell. * The email should include a map from the pier to the Maya Chan office/shuttle(?). If you don't see it, contact them. (to the beach!) * Our ship is "gangway down" at 12:30 pm and "gangway up" at 6:30 pm. * (bug spray) I don't use mine enough (or in enough places), and I get several bites during the excursion. * (beach towel) I bring one from the ship. * (walking to office/shuttle) I don't have the map from the email, and I'm alone. Thankfully, local workers help: I have to walk farther than expected, past the security checkpoint, to this "Mayan Temple replica" at the 2nd traffic circle (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LgJbf4Q2ruV7unPv6). * At the Maya Chan office, a friendly staffer mentions that the seawater isn't especially clear today, and is that okay? Well, what else am I going to say? Then again, I appreciate the communication, sign the waiver, and soon the shuttle is there to board. * (the ride) A staffer mentions the trip is 30 minutes, and a bit bumpy. A "Mexican massage." She was right! (at the beach!) * (English) Everyone speaks well (David, Julie, Itzel, Luis, et al.). * Everyone's super friendly and helpful. * I am shown a nice spot with plenty of chairs, cover, and a great view. Not crowded. * (Included in price) * all food and drink * Taco bar isn't ready for a bit, but chips/guac/salsa are still delic. * I don't drink, but I order multiple smoothies, limeade, Diet Coke(!), Diet Dr. Pepper(!!). * Taco bar is lovely and my cruise fav. Corn/flour tortillas made in front of me, four kinds of meat (beef/steak, chicken, pork, fish), charro beans, rice, different salsas. I can't describe it well ... will let a foodie. * use of all their gear and facilities * (snorkel gear, water shoes, kayaks, paddle boats, pool, etc.) * I wade in the water and even go past the blue seaweed barrier, but it's too murky to snorkel that day. * WiFi!!! * (Not included in price) * massages * 3 masseuses that day * I wait until after the taco bar to book a massage ... they fit me in right before our shuttle... * $25/$45. I pay $25; it's about 30 minutes. * She's tiny but strong! I prefer lighter massages, so I just pause and tell her. * I tip, but don't feel pressure to. * gift shop * woven shirts for colder weather ($12) * "Maya Chan" T-shirts ($15-$25) * Maya Chan book: "It Helps to be Crazy: The Story of Maya Chan Beach" by Jane Ostrow (https://www.amazon.com/Helps-Crazy-Story-Maya-Beach/dp/1432794566). ($25) I am sure I can get it for less used/eBook when home, but I'm wrong. Even used copies cost more. There is no eBook. * (blue seaweed barrier) (see pics). I can and do go beyond the barrier; it's shallow and the tide isn't strong. * (cats and dogs) cats x3, dogs x?. All were great (or shy). None were dangerous. * (tip jar) It's there, but no pressure. * We mostly read, nap, chat, eat, and drink. Very relaxing. A+. (back to the ship) * We choose when they'll call a shuttle to take us back. * Ride back is same length, same bumps, duh. We chat. I appreciate that Maya Chan Beach is indie, and how hard they work. I'm not fond of corporations, monopolies, needless overhead. The worst things about the excursion are hard to control: Farther meetup spot. Bumpy public roads. Seaweed. Murky water. When life gives you limes, ask the staff to make you a lime smoothie! =) If a friend visits Puerto Costa Maya, what would I recommend? (booking) * Book soon, in case it fills. * If you have trouble and are using Safari, try Google Chrome. * In the email titled, "Resort Update and Instructions," make sure it has the map to get from the pier to the office/shuttle. * Enable texts in Mexico, in case you need to text Mark. (to the beach) * (breakfast) If you skip it, you can eat more at the beach taco bar. =) * (bug spray) Apply before disembarking. * (beach towel) Get from the ship when you disembark. * (shuttle ride) Be prepared for 30 minutes of bumps. Chatting helps. (at the beach) * (massage) Book early. Consider getting two! * (bathrooms) (in Mexico, toilet paper is put in the waste basket) (there's a sign) * (wading/snorkeling) (use water shoes/fins) (it's ok to go beyond the blue barrier) * (bug spray) Re-apply after swimming/shower, etc. * (food/drink) Don't be afraid to ask! * (gift shop) Consider buying branded attire. And the book. Maybe staff will sign.

We stopped here for an excursion off of our cruise on Allure of the Seas. The service was amazing- they always made sure you had a cold drink in your hand. They food was phenomenal- the best I had all week. They did fun activities like tortilla making contest and a tequila tasting. We had our own cabana and the pool basically to ourselves. We had a massage and it was so affordable and really relaxing- don't miss it! They are honest about if there is a lot of seaweed on the beach- they show you a video so you can opt out if you want to but I am glad we didn't!

Last time visiting the Port of Costa Maya, Mexico we did some shopping, dropped in the pool at the port, had a beverage or two and got back on the ship to take advantage of empty waterslides and bars. This time...we were FAR more intelligent. After a little research we stumbled upon Maya Chan Beach Resort. The reviews were slightly mixed (mostly due to conditions out of their control like rough/murky waters) but we decided to roll the dice. We hit seven and eleven...over and over again. Leaving the port we found our transportation to Maya Chan (which was organized by Maya Chan and included in our fee) quite easily. We packed some people into a large 20 passenger style van and were on our way! A 20-ish minute ride through Mahahual was all that stood in our way of an incredibly relaxing day of beach, food, and beverages. The sights on the ride were truly beautiful as well (please see our video about the trip to Maya Chan for reference). "This cask sir is tequila that has been infused for six months with vanilla bean, and it is the smoothest thing you'll ever taste" - Our Wonderful Bartender As we arrived we were met at the front of the resort by a few employees whose English seemed to be a bit better than the others. One of the employees was clearly the "manager" and she explained the amenities, meal time, beverages, and showed us where the snorkel gear and showers were. We were then led to our private area of comfortable beach chairs, a wicker bed canopy, and gigantic palm frawn umbrella. We were immediately brought a rum punch as a welcome beverage (which I realize now after a few trips to Mexico that this is basically the industry standard kickoff) and some fresh tortilla chips with guacamole and pico de gallo. Our goal was fairly simple for this trip, try different cervezas, try different tequila's, eat authentic Mexican food, and perhaps take a beach nap! After a while of relaxing, a dip in the ocean, and quite a few different Mexican brews, it was time for our lunch. We were all gathered by the grill where mostly everything was set out for us and we had all of our options explained to us. Naturally, we tried a taste of everything...and so incredibly happy we did. The steak, pork, and chicken were all incredibly tender and flavorful. There was no need to even add any sauces (even though we did anyway) and these proteins didn't even need sides or tortillas (but we had those too). The sea bass was literally falling apart it was so tender and that was also incredible. After lunch (and another few beers of course), we went up to the bar. Chas leads in with "So...tell me about Tequila". Yes...those were his famous last words. Our bartender was more than happy to swiftly line up 6 shots for each of us with a brief description of each, how they were made, brands, where to get them, and varying degrees of flavor. It started with something downright foreign to either of us and I truly believe we are better people for having experienced it. There was a barrel sitting on it's side with a tap in it on the bar and we asked what was in it...turns out it was shot #1 on the tour of tequila's. "This cask sir is tequila that has been infused for six months with vanilla bean, and it is the smoothest thing you'll ever taste" ... oh how right he was. Easily the best tequila either of us have ever had...and we have had A LOT of tequila in our lives. The rest of the tour was slightly less tasty from 2-6 and each had a little more of a bite and a little less of euphoria. Chas nearly immediately went to the bed canopy and took a nap. Chuck went back in the ocean, made some new friends, and went back for more Vanilla Tequila shots! Our new friends hadn't experienced this yet, and clearly we could not allow them to go back to their homes somewhere in nowheresville, Idaho without indulging in this insanely tasty elixir. Soon after it was our time to say goodbye to all of our new friends from Maya Chan and head back to the port so we could board the Norwegian Sun and set sail for Cozumel. This beach club was one of the most relaxing and tasty experiences i've ever had...and that's saying a lot. The hospitality of the staff was truly warm and inviting and the feeling I had leaving there was one of completeness. Maya Chan Beach Resort in sunny Mahahual, Mexico...100% Didn't Suck!

    Private cabana

My family & I spent the afternoon here during a cruise stop in Costa Maya. Maya Chan was very laid back & peaceful. The food was superb and the service was very friendly and fun. Our kids (ages 16, 15, and 10) had plenty to do on the beach and our private seating area was just right for us. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for something low key and on the water.

Absolutely love the private beach feel of this place. The staff is very very accommodating and helpful. The food was a preset menu and every bite was delicious! I let them know in advance about my food allergies and intolerances and they were super accommodating. The drinks are awesome and if you ask the bartender for his specialty drink he makes this mojito type drinks that is delicious and definitely intoxicating if you have too many. There is lots to do on this beach but for me it was just a great day to relax and rest with good music and a really good drink. The only downside was the constant wash up of debris and seaweed which in all honesty is a Mother Nature issue.
