Such a beautiful estate! Free to get in, with a few optional donation boxes scattered around. There is a mansion, carriage house, and other historical buildings on one side of the property. The rest is large green pastures (perfect for picnics!!) and beautiful themed gardens and farm/wildlife exhibits. Lots of little gazebos scattered through the property. Very romantic! Somehow I have missed reviewing Maymont! Well, this is definitely a Richmond gem. I've been too many times to count. From dates, to solo trips, to hanging there with friends and family. Maymont has so many events that I haven't even been to all of them! Free admission to the park but a donation is appreciated. Here is what I've experienced: The park - Maymont is huge! There are a few different entrances depending on where you want to be. Regardless, you can still connect to the whole park if you want to really get in some exercise! There's plenty of paved hills as well as flat areas, so even just exploring part of the park can be a great workout. The children's farm - I always love seeing the animals here. They range from farm animals you can pet to a bears, horses, etc., depending on the weather. I usually start off by coming into this entrance to start with them first. Live music: I have happened to be there when there has been a live band. Not sure the occasion, but it was pretty nice. Garden Glow: First time coming here this year. The lights were nice, but a little underwhelming. The stairs heading down to the garden were steep and I was nervous for some of the people trying to get down them. Same with exiting, unless you took a golf cart, you had to go up the same stairs while others were coming in, which sounds like an accident waiting to happen. So we took the golf cart. But, glad I did check it out - but will probably skip it in the future. So all in all, I love Maymont! I use it 99% for the park and animals, and it never disappoints! read more

On our first visit to Richmond, our friends took us to this park and we were not prepared for what was in store. The kids said there were goats. Well, there were goats, sheep, foxes, cougars, bear, and I'm sure I'm missing a bunch more! The Japanese gardens were magical even in the winter months so you can say this was part of the reason Richmond won us over but we just officially moved in. We had a perfect but incomplete first visit on a recent rainy afternoon, and were hugely impressed by the mansion and the grounds! - The Hampton Street entrance is the official entry point with a parking lot, and the mansion is a short walk from here. - Pick up an information flyer with a map of the estate from the information stand at entrance. - Grounds are open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm Oct-March, and until 7pm April-Sept. - Maymont Mansion is open for tour Tuesday-Sunday, 12pm-5pm (Oct-March), and 11am-5pm (April-Sept.) - $5 donation is suggested per person for the tour, and it was well worth the suggested donation; the mansion is jaw-droppingly amazing in its opulence, so we were happy knowing that the fee is less than 1/4 of what you'd pay for Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, for example, whose house or its tour is not nearly detailed and interesting as Maymont. - The paved trails through the rolling hills with plants, animals, and bridges make for a gorgeous destination for a jog. - The Farm, Japanese Garden, and Nature & Visitor Center are other potential highlights we didn't get to visit, so we'll be back! read more

Maymont is beautiful! Both the mansion and the grounds are lovely. I came to tour the mansion on a rainy day so sadly I did not get to see all of the grounds but I really enjoyed the mansion tour. The suggested donation is $5 per person and well worth the price. You get to see the whole house on the tour. My favorite room was the lady's room with swan bed! So beautiful. Japanese and Italian Garden at Maymont Park .... This place is one of the prettiest place in Richmond. If you plan on visiting Richmond, you must make time to visit here. Spring and Fall are the best times. I visited here multiple times lately to get some fresh air from being cooped too long in the house during the quarantine. While it is not usually crowded during the weekdays, it was busier than usual due to people trying to get some outdoor leisure time to combat quarantine fatigue. A beautiful treasure in the city of Richmond and a must-see for anyone visit in the city. Maymont Park is a wonderful place to visit any time of year. During the spring bloom, the summer afternoons, the autumnal changes, or in the snow, Maymont is a wondrous experience for 1-3 hours. Great for a picnic, walking or jogging by yourself, meeting friends, taking a tour of the Dooley mansion, or visiting the animals at the barn area or Nature Center. It's free to visit though they welcome donations at the gate. Even better is to become a member of the park so they can count on having your support. Spending time at the park is romantic, inspiring, and truly a joy. The grounds people you only see on occasion and they tend to stick to themselves as they do their work or tote around carrying bulbs or other service products from place to place. At times they do horse-drawn carriage rides or tram rides no I'm not particularly sure of those schedules it is worth checking out on the website. An amateur or professional photographer can easily spend the day at Maymont, one of the best places Richmond City has to offer. * pets are not welcome. We got to stroll Maymont grounds as family and friends, with guests of all ages. Seeing the grounds and of course feeding the goats was a great experience. The children loved it and got some energy out running around, being excited and learning about all the animals seen. I only got to experience the mansion, carriage collection and the gardens. Guided tours of the mansion are every half-hour from 12pm to 4:30pm, Tuesdays through Sundays. You sign up for the tour and pay admission at the Belowstairs exhibit level (entry at the right side of the house). $5 per person. You can give yourself a free self-guided tour of the Belowstairs exhibit as you wait for your tour of the main house. The mansion shop is located right at the small register area. The mansion tour was a good experience. The Belowstairs exhibit is pretty depressing, but very informative. Though I will say, one video that mentions the 19th amendment forgot to mention that it only granted white women the right to vote and that women of color didn't get to freely exercise their right to vote until much later. But anyway, the main house is beautiful. It is filled to the brim with eye-catching and gorgeous antiques. The highlights for me were a huge vintage Louis Vuitton trunk and a vintage Tiffany & Co vanity (circa 1903) located in Mrs. Dooley's bedroom. The tour guide was very fun and energetic. Her passion for the estate and great delivery of her explanations definitely kept us very intrigued throughout, and yes, you do learn quite a lot. Be it the south, it was interesting to hear the tour guide describe a battle during the civil war from the south's perspective when she mentioned that the owner's brother was a POW at Johnson's Island, Ohio after the Battle of Gettysburg. The south lost that battle and it's usually celebrated as a victory up north, but she made it seem more somber. Another wild fact that the tour guide shared was that the lady of the house, Mrs. Dooley, a white woman, actually wrote and published a book from "the African American perspective". W-I-L-D. My friends and I were in disbelief. As I said, the tour was VERY informative. One thing I didn't know and wish I knew sooner was you have an option to take a one hour golf cart tour of the land for just $25 (for non-members) on Saturdays and Sundays (only weekends). This would've been ideal with the heat because it is a long walk through the different buildings before arriving at the mansion and it's an even longer walk to see the gardens. In nice weather, it's fine, but I'm extreme heat, it's rough. The gardens are simply gorgeous. I wish the Italian garden was much bigger. read more

I am visiting from out of town and wanted to kill some time with my son before meeting up with family in the evening. Took my son to the farm and walked around for about an hour. The animals were very cool and friendly! There are animal food pellets available for 50 cents ... is about a fistful of food. There are plenty of signs available to let you know which animals are allowed the food. Also, there is a large farm sink for you to clean up after you pet and feed the animals! This place is a hidden gem that my local family never knew existed! A must visit if you are local or from out of town. Tip: if you are like me and don't carry quarters around, go to the vending machine and insert a $1 or $5 into the far right soda machine and hit return change to get quarters. Warning: There are some steep inclines near the farm especially if you go down to visit the bobcat and fox. read more

I happened to come here for the Herbs Galore & More event . There was a $5.00 admission to enter. So many vendors selling plants , flowers and herbs . Lots of variety. This was the first time I'd been to this event at Maymont . It was well laid out with plenty of room to move around and look at all the plants . As close to paradise as you're going to get this side of heaven. There are several entrances, one places you in front of a massive stone mansion that towers over the rolling hills of this 100 acre estate. The inside is just as awe inspiring as the outside. Another entrance off Shields Rd., before you get to the Nickel Bridge, puts you at the Children's Farm. The barns here are stocked with goats, chickens, pigs, rabbits, cows and more. Last time I was there, a parade of school children were having their field trip at the farm! I prefer this entrance because there is more parking and I think it's easier to negotiate. Then as you walk down past the farm onto the trails, you will also encounter some wildlife exhibits like bison, bobcats and more. There's also a Nature Center with even more animals like alligators, fish, turtles, snakes, to name a few. Animals lovers of all ages will love it here! The main entrance, by the mansion, will have walkways leading to the beautifully designed Japanese Gardens with its waterfalls, stone structures and bridges. Another path leads you to the romantic Italian Garden (my favorite), with its lushly manicured flower beds full of colorful roses. I love the pergola, the colonnade, the fountain, the stone steps and the sculptures. I've been to several weddings at this gorgeous spot and it makes a breathtaking backdrop for nuptials! There are several other smaller gardens, and you may just discover a Secret Garden as you are meandering through the park. This is an exquisite area to enjoy a picnic, but you have to leave your furry pets at home as no domestic animals are permitted. There is so much more to discover here at Maymont, and it would take many visits to see everything they have to offer! On one visit we even took a carriage ride thru the park and it was exhilarating. If you park near the nature center, you can explore the nature trails (featuring bison, cows, chickens, goats and a bobcat), looping through the beautiful Japanese and Italian gardens. Highlights include a koi pond, a Labyrinth-worthy spiraling fountain, beautiful flowers, and more. With the mansion itself closed due to covid, there is still plenty to do and tons to explore. Richmond, VA--Road Trip #3 The main purpose for this road trip was Maymont. With 100+ reviews and a five-star rating, I needed to see what Yelpers were talking about. Maymont is an extraordinary park with 100-acres, and many things to explore. If any of my local friends are reading this, you must check out this place. A quick drive to Richmond is definitely worth it. Around 1886, James Henry and Sallie Dooley purchased the land where Maymont resides. They lived there for thirty years, making it into a beautiful estate. When they died, they bequeathed Maymont to the city of Richmond. Now a private nonprofit organization called Maymont Foundation takes care of the property for the city. While Maymont was given to the city, there was no money to maintain it. This is why they ask for donations even though most of the park is free. Now, let's talk about what Maymont has to offer: Gardens (free)- Maymont has two gardens: Italian and Japanese. Both are beautiful with lots of flowers and interesting things to see. The Italian Garden was designed by Noland and Baskervill from Richmond, and this beautiful Victorian garden was finished by 1910. It has statuary, cascade, fountain, pergola, gazebos and gorgeous stonework. That day I spotted a Monarch Butterfly. From the Italian Garden down to the Japanese Garden, you walk down exquisite stairs. The Japanese Garden was my favorite part of Maymont; the Dooleys hired a master gardener named Muto, but it was much smaller than the current Japanese Garden, which was renovated in 1978. I saw a waterfall, bridge, koi in the pond, stone lanterns, a bamboo structure and more. Words cannot describe this place--you must see it for yourself. Mansion ($5 suggested donation)- Maymont Mansion was built in 1893, and is the Romanesque-style, with 12,000 square feet and 33 rooms. The Dooleys named their home "May Mont," which was a combination of Sallie's maiden-name and the French word "hill." The public is welcome to tour the mansion (Tuesday - Sunday, 12 pm - 5 pm); there is a guided tour upstairs and a self-guided tour downstairs. I did not tour the inside of the home, but I will next time I visit. Children's Farm ($4 suggested donation) and Wildlife Exhibits- The Children's Farm has domesticated animals (i.e., pigs, sheep, cow, chicken, donkeys, rabbits, and ducks) and allows you to pet and feed them (only using their special feed). They also have "Adopt an Animal," which helps to fund the Children's Farm. You get to pick which animal you want, and the lowest level for donation is $25 up to the highest level of $500. You will receive a special certificate in the mail. On the path to the Wildlife Exhibits from the Children's Farm, you can see the butterfly gardens. The Wildlife Exhibits are available mid-March through mid-October. The native Virginia animals to see at Maymont are bears, birds of prey, deer, bison, fox and bobcat. I did get to see some action that day since it was overcast and cool, which animals enjoy. (There is the Robins Nature and Visitor Center part of Maymont, but it has its own page on Yelp. Because of that, I decided to write two different reviews. Besides, this review is already quite long. In addition, consider buying an annual membership. As a family, you can become a member for $60 for a year and includes two adults/six children. There are benefits such as free admission into the Nature Center, 10% off off souvenirs, member-only events and more.) I was so impressed with Maymont; there is no other place like it. Not to mention, Maymont is a photographer's dream--I had such a blast taking hundreds of photos. If you are visiting Richmond, I highly recommend that Maymont is top on your list. Maymont is the East Coast version of Golden Gate Park. No matter the season, I try to get to this park whenever I am in Richmond. I have been here several times and I have yet to get over to the wildlife center (with BEARS AND OTTERS) and have mostly stayed in the Italian Garden and Japanese Garden side taking millions of pictures and strolling around. The park itself has abundant parking and several lots. The best lot to park at for the gardens and mansion is the the Hampton Street Entrance located at 1700 Hampton Street. Maymont is in fact a photographers dream as other Yelpers have mentioned. It is also a gardening fanatics dream come true with herbs galore and rotating flora. Gardening is a favorite hobby of mine since as I get older and the further I get into watching The Walking Dead, I feel as though my role in the zombie apocalypse would be more of a farmer than a fighter. So I need to develop my skills. For gardening geeks like me, every year (April) Maymont hosts the Herbs Galore and More, where vendors from the mid-Atlantic fill Maymont's Carriage House Lawn with every imaginable herb as well as annuals, perennials, trees, vegetables, and herbal products and crafts for this one-of-a-kind event. Basically, you bring a wagon and load up on plants, also they have beer and cider. Now more about the gardens, on a beautiful day, it is quite likely you'll run into lots of engagement/special occasion shoots here. It was quite the beautiful backdrop from the canopy arches covered in flowering vines in the Italian Garden, to the waterfall and Koi ponds in the Japanese Gardens. You'll want to come here in late spring when the water is running. As of yesterday (5/1/16), the fountains were off, and the waterfalls were dry. It still makes for stunning pictures, but the grotto and falls are a lot more alive when the water is flowing. On my recent visit here, the park smelled amazing. I respond to flower scents like a cat to cat nip. The smell here drove me mad (in a good way) I wish I could bottle the air up and carry it with me. Apparently, they dug out their old cactus gardens and replaced them with aromatic Victorian flowers, like lilacs and lilies. You'll smell this all the way down in the Japanese Gardens even though the flowers are closer to where the bears are (probably to cover up the smell of bear poop). When planning your visit, it's safe to say just about anyone can make the trek down to the gardens, but as a warning for parents with strollers, there are lots of steps and stepping stones in the gardens, so it will get a little annoying to haul all that stuff. Bring comfortable walking shoes, and a camera, as well as snacks and water (you may want to picnic and stay awhile). read more

Can't get enough of Maymont! I grew up coming here with my parents and brother and loved it as a child; as an adult, I love it just as much if not more. I always enter through the Shields Drive entrance -- there's plenty of off-street parking available and, to me, has always felt like the most centrally located entrance. The Italian and Japanese gardens are beautiful (great photo ops for all occasions -- senior pics, engagement photos, heavily liked Instas... ok, I kid about the last one but I can't imagine it would hurt!). The bamboo forest was always my favorite as a kid and they lead to a lovely waterfall. Maymont has a suggested donation of $5 for entrance but nothing is required and it's honor system only. My only request is (and I feel guilty for withholding the 1 star for only this) that they step up the petting zoo/ animal exhibits in years to come -- they only offer goats and sheep if I recall correctly.. and I always wish there were more to animals to pet! :) On top of that, the black bear is barely ever visible in his habitat and I feel like I've spent more time waiting for him to come out than actually ever seeing him! Truly a must see in Richmond though, especially when the weather is beautiful and you can pack a lunch and eat on the lawn outside! read more

This is a beautiful 100 acre historic estate and park. This is a great place for families and for anyone really who wants to stretch their legs or have a nice picnic. It's technically free however they do ask for a small donation of $5. Their parking lots were all full but we were able to find parking on the street. I really just went to see their Japanese Garden. It was so beautiful and worth all the walking. I spent a good few hours at this park and was definitely tired by the time we headed out. Great space to hangout when you need some nature time. There are nice stone benches by the Japanese garden down the hill by the water. That's a great place for some peace, even if its a busy day for them. Wouldn't recommend going down the stairs if you have knee trouble or any walking pains, though. A sweet review for a sweet trip to Maymont! Plenty of parking available in front of the information building. Tickets were $4 each to enter the aquarium which begins in the main information building. From there on, you can go out to explore the park area where there is also some wildlife and farm life. Or you can directly go to the park area for free if you choose to skip the aquarium! The mini aquarium was the best part! They had a select number of animals, but they were all very easy to watch especially those dang cute otters! Would say the aquarium takes about 25 minutes and the test of the park 30 minutes to an hour. There weren't too many wildlife animals outside- we saw eagles, a black bear, and a bob not exactly exciting but still a nice addition to a walk in the greenery. Overall, a great (and CHEAP!) place for a family trip or even a more outdoorsy date! read more

Large park with plenty of parking? Check. Different themed gardens with regular maintenance? Check. A large mansion, farm, and nature building to tour? Check! There is a lot of stuff to do at Maymont, and with 100 acres to roam, you'll have the opportunity to do whatever you'd like there. We went here on a lovely 75 degree, sunny, and slightly windy day at the very end of summer / beginning of autumn. That alone is a good way to start any day to the park as it's warm but has a cool breeze to save it from being hot. We went with a time frame in mind, so we didn't get to visit the Mansion, Nature Center, or spend to much lounging in the park, but we got through most of it and do plan on coming back. Everything I mention below will also be represented by at least one photo, so check out my pictures with the review as well! - Italian Garden: The entrance we went in opened up almost immediately to the Italian Garden. One of their featured themed gardens, the Italian garden features arranged foliage and some statues / structural designs. There are some really great angles here for photography, and plenty of butterflies and bees (bumble bees, the nice kind!) to keep it lively. It's also above different parts of the park, so you can look down on things as well. I don't know a lot of the names of flowers, but there is a nice colorful spread and they looked for the most part in good shape. - Japanese Garden: The Italian Garden has an elaborate set of stairs leading down to the Japanese Garden, which I found to be rather nice. I lived in Tokyo, Japan for about 4 months and some of the first places I visited there was the Imperial Palace and Garden among other popular gardens and parks. While Richmond isn't Japan, Maymont does manage to capture a lot of the design elements in traditional Japanese gardens. I particularly enjoyed the small Tea House structure, stepping stones, rock garden, and koi. There is a certain level of serenity I find in Japanese gardens and this one is probably the nicest I've seen in the States. - Animal Habitats: Continuing the stroll from the Japanese Garden led us to some of the animal displays. They rescue injured bears and other animals that otherwise wouldn't survive in the wild and take care of them here. In a way, it's a little like a zoo, but it has a bit of a more natural feel. We couldn't find the bear, but we did see the eagle, deer, and raptors. - Farm: I'm not sure how a farm fits in with gardens and a park, but it was actually pretty neat! There was a large barn, some farm animals like cows and goats, and a petting zoo that had more goats and a donkey. There wasn't so much in the way of actual farming, but they did have a small patch of crops. There was one goat in particular that I enjoyed and have a few pictures of him. - Arboretum: When we were walking through this we didn't realize it was designed this way on purpose, but they have quite a spread of trees throughout the large open park area. There is a lot of open space and people were out on blankets and playing. Looks like a nice place for a family or just to hang out. We didn't make it to the Maymont Mansion or the Nature and Visitor's Center, but both look nice on their official website. We do plan on walking around at a later point and perhaps in all 4 seasons as I bet the park has a different feel every time. If you're looking for a place to go and enjoy some trees, gardens, or just a great park experience, I highly suggest Maymont. There isn't a cost for most of it (I think the Nature Center is a few dollars), but they do request donations. It seems like a great place for any group of people or families. If you have relatives visiting Richmond or if you just want a nice day out, check it out! read more

Clearly this is a park to be visited in seasons other than winter. However since we missed coming here last fall decided to give it a try anyway despite now being not the most optimal season. Turned out, it's still a great place to visit even in Jan. The colors maybe a bit dull and dreary but you can get a better sense of the layout of the area, being able to see a lot further through trees devoid of leaves. On the farm there are still a few barnyard animals to make children happy, especially the very friendly goats. The Japanese garden still offers some greenery from the dense bamboo groves, and the Italian garden is still glorious with its sculpted staircase and arbor with plenty of chairs to rest on, and nice view of the river. We were also pleasantly surprised by the 3 bisons in an enclosure across from the farm. Another benefit of a visit in the winter is the place is far from crowded, even on a Sunday, which I'm sure won't be the case in summer. The paved paths here are not very wide, so could get clogged occasionally even now with a few groups of people (half not masked). One of the best parks I have ever been to, and some good Pokémon catches here too. Maymont Park was a definite must-see on my list of activities while in the RVA. Inside this large park (with a recommended $5 donation request), there is beautiful architecture, a large mansion, two beautiful gardens from different world (Japanese and Italian), and a makeshift zoo! During the summer, the tundra of green grass and open fields with families walking dogs made it feel like such a community. You'll be sure to have a blast going around and spending a few hours enjoying life. On a hot day, be sure to stay hydrated! read more

Maymont is a beautiful place. It shows off stellar design and it preserves history, both natural and architectural. One of my favorite things to do on a warm spring day is to visit with my friends and tour the petting zoo. I also love the Dooley mansion tours and will typically go on one every time I'm showing Maymont off to someone who hasn't been before. The only setback is, unfortunately, not fixable. The property is not very accessible for mobility aids and strollers because it is so hilly and maintains a lot of the original cobblestone paths and stone staircases. If you are taking young children for a day out, make sure they are old enough to walk on their own most of the time. read more
