Lots of locals love to have picnics and drinks in this tiny park. It's a very charming section of the Fan. Most people will either grab a drink from Strawberry Market or ice cream from Scoop and eat it here. Other options are Mexican takeout from Blue Habanero or pizza from 8 1/2. There is a cute community garden at one end of the park. They have a compost bin which is awesome. There are some benches, tables, and a good amount of green space to sit down. I love to meet up with friends, read a book, play music, or picnic here. This is probably one of my favorite parks we have.

My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.

My wife and I visited LGBG to see the new butterfly exhibit. We got there early enough to walk…read morearound the grounds for an hour. What a beautiful setting! Lots of carefully thought out flower / plant beds spread over a huge park-like area. We could see the staff (or volunteers) weeding, replacing, and caring for the plants to keep everything healthy and fresh. A children's presentation was taking place over under the shade in one area, and it was entertaining and informative enough that I wanted to stop and listen. A restaurant and a large meeting hall (one of the older houses) and a music performance pavilion and a gift shop rounded out the setting, along with the various sheltered exhibit buildings. There is also a refreshment cart on the main pathway, which was invaluable on this hot day. The butterfly exhibit was absolutely enthralling. Hundreds of live flutter-byes in a closed glassed in space. Many colors and varieties. I am told they curate the butterflies to replace them every week or so as they inevitably.... go to insect heaven. So the exhibit is constantly changing! Admission to the butterfly experience is included with the price of getting into LGBG.

This is a nice little park located in Rockett's Landing. While there is very few parking, it is not…read morethat extensive a park such that there is a quick turnover. This parking frees up rather quickly and many people were kind enough to offer up their spot. The Ship Lock Canal runs along the park to cross over to Chapel Island. It was clear that the area is being protected and restored as it is part of the historic William H. Trigg Shipyard Dry dock or Caisson, that originated in the late 1700s and served as the home of destroyers used in the Civil War. The area is rife with wildlife, which is why the city is heavily invested in habitat restoration. So it is a good place for a short hike and and a place for reflection.

Another piece of Richmond's riverfront, this one is a little quieter and farther from downtown than…read morethe Belle Isle area. As with much of the Richmond riverfront, this area has a sense that the old industry was simply abandoned, and the disused canal lock with its flamboyant gate has a ghostly vibe to it. There's a set of trails on a nearby island, and the railroad runs by the area. Parking was pretty limited; I went a block up. There is a much longer trail system of which this area leads into, and there is plenty to do along the river.

It's located in Maymont and was such a vibe. There was a map online that made it easier to figure out the layout and their website was really helpful for any questions we had. I loved how laid-back this festival was, guests could bring in wagons with blankets and lawn chairs. There were plenty of food tents as well as goods for sale tents. There were lots of talented artists in attendance too. I highly recommend checking out this festival.

Some of the most creative things can be found at Gallery 5. It's a spot I'd recommend every local check out at least once. My favorite feature is when the weather is just right, they open up the space to get fresh air in. It makes for a beautiful farm house look. The drinks are priced just right here and the bartenders are wonderful. You are able to purchase tickets for shows ahead of time or in person. If you purchase them ahead of time, they'll usually have your name on a list at the front. Gallery 5 is a very hip and chill spot. It's great for big events or relaxed evenings. You can see their full lineup of events on their website's calendar. There is free street parking nearby and a lot of other great local businesses to check out not too far away.
