Nothing remarkable about the place. It's been here that I remember since the early-mid 60s. The menu is still stuck there. Having formerly lived on the Island and a few other shore points off of 72, used to stop there. It was fun, homey, and good place to grab a quick bite or meet other locals also doing the Island-city hop. Things changed, or rather, they didn't. Now a family man, the place is not do-able for anyone concerned about their health, good drinks, or a relaxing, homey roadhouse. Menu a pile of frozen/fried junk. Some vegetarian friends couldn't find anything on the menu. Staff was indifferent, not knowledgeable, and slow. I know I'm pining about the old days, but a joint like this, getting tons of shore traffic, could accommodate the varied travelers that might stop in. A few salads, some quick pastas, and a veggie burger would allow anyone to eat there and help ensure the clientele didn't die of atherosclerosis in their 40s. Though it's got no atmosphere, Wawa next door has superior food. And the liquor store next to that has the booze. My car is much more comfortable and scenic than Mayos anymore. Oh, well. read more

Quintessential dive bar experience! You won't find anything like this on Long Beach Island. I'm a connoisseur of dive bars and this place hits the spot. I went to Mayos for the first time last week. It's a pretty cool place "Dive Bar". Looks like an old log cabin. I went with my sister, brother in law, 2 nephews and one of their girlfriend. We ordered appetizers and drinks. We had the huge mozzarella sticks, they were good. We also had the pretzel bites with cheese sauce, they were yummy. I also tried the fried Mac and cheese bites. I thought the prices were a little expensive. Service was good. The only thing I didn't care for was the cigarette smoke from the patio was coming inside. I could smell smoke on me when we left. Pros, good food that was very hot and delivered from a very upbeat man from the kitchen. He informed us he it was his first day. He did an excellent job. Cons, Service started with a pleasant bartender who left. Another bartender took over as our waitress. She was on her phone and not attentive. There were many flies in the restaurant. When I asked for the food to go, due to the flies. She informed us that "it comes with the territory of the area and season." read more

Stopped here on a whim when we were passing through town. It was 3 PM on a Saturday and not busy at all. The food took a little longer than we'd hoped to come out but it was worth the wait - the Mayo's Chicken Cheesesteak was amazing. We enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly staff while we waited. The bar had quite the charm to it, we really loved all the lights and decor. Would definitely return if we're in the area again! The place seemed kid friendly (during the day at least). read more

What a diamond in the pine barrens. Stopped here to see our friend Tina. She's the bartender here on Saturday. This place is pretty cool. The food here was fantastic. My cheesesteak was awesome. My friends had steamed clams, fried pickles and some sandwiches. Everything was great. I will certainly be back again. read more

Best Grilled Reuben ever!! At least in my opinion. Not one of those that is so full of corned beef that you can't taste the cheese or the sauerkraut. Great selection of beers. I had a Swamp Donkey IPA (Pinelands Brewery, Egg Harbor). Located in an old (restored) log cabin that was purportedly a speakeasy during Prohibition. Friendly service and clientele. I like this place, I really do. Especially, since it's on it way to my fishing grounds to the shore. I good place to stop on the way back. The good: I like that it's an old historic cabin type place and the food is good but I usually only get the wings. The bad: Doesn't seem the owner/manager really cares about the place. Hire a designer or decorator ( the beer banner are tacky as hell), get a good cook/ updaye the menu and advertise to bring some folks in. Give people a reason to head out there. I'd been away from Mayo's for a long time, since the Eagles moved to the Linc and I gave up my season tickets. I'd been a Sunday morning and night regular there during football season since I was about eight years old, and I had grown from being bored to tears there to falling absolutely in love with it. Irene bartended in the morning, Andrew at night. Some days, it seemed like two out of every three drinks were buy-backs. Others, it seemed like all of them were. It was the kind of place where five regulars could each throw $25 on the bar, drink all day or from six until last call, and leave a $95 tip with the change. Late in my time there, it changed ownership. A friend and I had discussed buying the place, but he was too focused on how to make it profitable, whereas I was more interested in having a fun spot to hang out in all night while playing host, one that would possibly break even if we were lucky. Having such wildly divergent expectations, we did nothing, and a couple of guys we didn't know took it over. The buy-backs came to an end, which surely must have improved the bottom line, but the feel of Mayo's somehow changed beyond that. There was a sense that things were really and finally winding down after 70 or 80 years. And then we stopped going, because if we weren't driving into Philly every other Sunday, there was just no reason to travel an hour to drink all day at a dive bar in the middle of nowhere. None, at least, that either of our wives would have accepted. Fast forward several years, and I found myself driving through the Chatsworth area with a bit of spare time. I thought, why not stop in for a drink and a bit of auld lang syne? From the outside, not much appeared to have changed. Mayo's is a squat two-storey log cabin with a gravel parking lot, always has been, and hopefully will remain so. Inside, they had renovated, removing the attic over the bar to create a cathedral ceiling, and somehow turning the bar itself 90 degrees. It was considerably more well lit than I remembered it, and way too clean. Gone were the 365 day a year Christmas lights, colors changing with the seasons. Gone was the large shell nailed to a post advertising turtle soup, and the police patches that had surrounded it. There was no one inside but the bartender, and I sat down and ordered a gin and tonic. It's pretty awkward to sit at an otherwise empty bar alone and in broad daylight, so I started making chit chat, trying to squeeze information out of her. Obviously uninterested in my little detour down memory lane (and why should she have been otherwise?), she did know some of the people I remembered from the past, including Andrew, who as it turned out, was her husband. I would have bet the farm and all the livestock on it that Andrew was gay, so I was a bit surprised to hear that. I was even more surprised that it was they who had bought the place and basically ruined it, or, I should say, ruined it for me. I hung around a little longer than intended, drinking significantly more than I had planned to, because I was told that Andrew was coming in and I wanted to say hello. The drinks were strong, and by the time I was done, I couldn't have told you what they cost or how many I'd had. When he finally showed up, it turned out that he didn't remember me, though he vaguely remembered my father, and he definitely remembered my friend. So I left rather drunk, disappointed with the changes that I felt had removed all traces of character from the bar, and with my feelings slightly hurt. I took the dirt road across from the parking lot as a shortcut to Route 70 and toward home, ran a stop sign in the middle of the woods, got pulled over by a State Trooper, and was initiated as a member in good standing into The DWI Club. It's not exclusive, but it's very expensive. Not a good day. Now, when a feeling of nostalgia starts to creep up on me, I think of Mayo's and I push it away with both hands. To paraphrase Martin in Grosse Pointe Blank, you can never go home again, but I guess you can shop there. I don't recommend doing either. However, if you find yourself thirsty and ten miles from anywhere, you could do worse than Mayo's. And I mean that literally, because Joe Bell's is right up the road, and it is nothing if not worse. read more

This is the spot!!!! Some nights it's hipster as hell but Jimmy makes it amazing. The atmosphere is there and you are treated like family by him. Forget the losers before that ran the bar. Jimmy hooks it up every time. read more

We stopped by here after work with a group of 4 on a Monday evening and ordered the wings, Western fries and a few mixed drinks to wash it down. The place had a warm atmosphere with a fireplace and yet there were a good amount of tv's for those interested in watching various sports. The bartender (her name is Hillary) was very personable and attentive. The drinks were strong, the wings were excellent and the Western fries (served with Ranch dressing, bacon and cheese) were devoured by the group. If you're in the area, this place is definitely better than most around. I'm recommending this to all my friends on base. read more

This place had the most unexceptable service I've ever experienced. Came in for a drink and quick bite to eat, wound up leaving with neither. The fat white, repulsive, unwelcoming, useless scumbag they call a bartender was unfriendly and on top of that I found a cockaroach on my leg while on my way home. Stopped in recently on a Sunday for beers. Decided to have the deviled crabs. They came out tasting funny and the tartar sauce served in a small cup on the side was practically frozen. We sent them back half eaten. The place had a few tv's for watching football and they offered game specials on drafts. Nothing special about this place. read more
