I wanted to post a quick update for anyone who relies on gluten-free options: Mayu's Bakery no longer offers gluten-free cakes. I stopped in to order a birthday cake for my son. Because I have to eat gluten-free for health reasons, I usually order our family celebration cakes GF so I can enjoy a slice too. Since they discontinued their GF cakes, I did end up purchasing a regular cake for his birthday so our guests could enjoy it- but sadly this means their cakes aren't inclusive for my own family's dietary needs when we want to share dessert together :( I still love Mayu's Bakery and will continue buying cakes and treats from them for other occasions, but I wanted to give fellow GF families a heads-up! read more

this is the second time I've been in. I bought a cake for a birthday and it was a biscotti layer cake. The cake was delicious not too sweet like I thought it would be. The texture was fluffy and reminded me of wedding cake. they have a large selection of pastries besides cakes and I've tried the cannoli and it was pretty good. The service was fast and friendly. The shop is well kept and clean. parking can be a bit confusing as it does share a parking lot with Starbucks and you either have to come in by making a u-turn or from the other street. also if you get there in time they might have in empanadas. We originally visited this bakery to sample a variety of their pastries, including cake pops, a ham & cheese croissant, chocolate croissant, cream horn, and several others. Unfortunately, we found the quality inconsistent. Many of the pastries seemed stale, the cake pops had a noticeably artificial flavor, and the ham & cheese croissant was mealy at the center. Considering the other excellent patisseries in the area, we decided not to return for pastries. On a positive note, a cake sample available at the bakery was delicious--moist and delicately sweet, striking a nice balance compared to the overly sweet offerings typical of chain bakeries. Encouraged by the cake sample, we ordered custom cakes for two birthdays about a year apart. The first cake was fully inedible due to an excessive use of food coloring, which imparted a horrifically bitter taste, and forced to throw away the entire cake. Although the bakery owner initially reacted with frustration, he did issue a refund and we appreciated it. We gave it another chance some months later with a simpler cake and avoiding any custom decorations, but this one was dry. The frosting was absolutely wonderful, but the cake itself was lacking. The actual cakes we received never reflected the original sample we were so impressed with that first time. While this bakery is not the worst, the high prices do not match the quality of the offerings. read more

I called a week in advance of my wife's 50th birthday, and spoke with a person who was absolutely certain they could meet my requirements: Guava cake, with coconut and pineapple filling, no butter cream frosting, just whipped cream and a digital print of a special picture. One day before the birthday party, I was called and informed, "whoever took my order was wrong". That they don't make guava cake. I asked why was I being called at noon on the day before my wife's bday, when I could've been called the day after I placed my order. I was not provided a reason, other than asking me to make a choice about the type of cake that they can make. I had to make a choice under a tight deadline because I had no other option. Once I updated my order, I asked the person to please have a manager or owner call me so that I could express my concern about my situation. Never got a call. When I drove from Oakland to Pittsburgh to pick up the cake, I asked the counter person to please have someone call me as I shared my story with her. Never got a call. So how was the cake that I paid for but had to change the day before my wife's birthday? It was still what I didn't order. Maybe one day, the owner will be a good human being and do what's right: Apologize, and just give me back my money. No customer should ever have to pay for another employees mistakes. read more

Everything looked so good. The bakery was really cute inside, looked very clean and organized, and the lady who helped me was super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the treats I selected didn't blow my mind. The cannoli shells seemed a bit too hard, the filling a bit too sweet. The mocha eclair did not have a complex flavor, rather a bit on the sweet side. My treats didn't taste stale, but I wouldn't say they were fresh. Based on all the other reviews, I'd say maybe I came on an off day. Everyone seems to love their offerings, so maybe it's just me. I'll give them another try, and report back. I have been a ordering/purchasing from Mayu's since they first opened, but my most recent experience was incredibly disappointing. I called ahead to reserve a specific cake, yet when I arrived, I was told it had been sold to someone else. The person in the front clearly recognized me, she even asked if I was the person 'doing the Costco run' so there was no confusion about my identity or my order. Instead of an apology, she simply said, 'It got sold,' and claimed I should have paid over the phone. However, that option was never offered to me when I called to reserve it.
