    African Bead Museum

On one of me trips exploring certain areas of urban art throughout Detroit (dragging Erin along as my functioning driver and bodyguard), i just had to somehow locate the 'shiny buildings' which can be seen off the expressway. The reason we did visit the inside of the actual museum is that it was later in the day, and my better half was getting a little bit tired, and hungry. Any woman knows this will turn into grumpy in about 2.875 seconds, so I made due with checking out the amazing artistry outside and around the building. There are interesting sculptures to be found on one side of the building, and of course the aforementioned shinies are plastered all over the walls. We noticed the artist at work in the sculpture garden, and he was friendly enough to tell us about his work. For example, a cool story he told was that each part of these walls are really individual panels - rescued off of burned and/or otherwise sad buildings in the area. Parts get rescued, re-used and beautified to be enjoyed and have purpose once again. How very phoenix like. How very Detroit. Yes, you can drive by and enjoy the glittering prettiness. However, I urge you to get out, walk around and take in each and every individual piece on every wall. The art extends to the sidewalk, and includes beautifully crafted masks made out of beads imbedded in some walls. Around the corner is yet another bejazzled building, which is worth taking in. Next time we come back, we will stop and visit the actual museum. Until then, every time I drive by I will just smile and get happy all over again for having seen this gem up close.

If you love Detroit (or just great local finds), put this everything-Detroit boutique at the very…read moretop of your list. It's one of those shops that perfectly captures the spirit of the city while still feeling welcoming, creative, and genuinely community-focused. The location in Midtown is super convenient, with easy street parking nearby -- always a bonus in the city. And if you have time, definitely pop next door to Nest, which they also own. It has the same thoughtful vibe and is absolutely worth browsing plant-centric items. This is my go-to spot for gifts, although I'll admit some items mysteriously end up staying with me. The selection is fantastic: unique Detroit-themed T-shirts, beautiful jewelry, coasters, drinkware, cutting boards, locally made soaps, baby gifts, and so much more. Everything has a Michigan connection, and a lot of the pieces come from local artists and makers, which makes shopping here feel even more meaningful. What really sets this place apart, though, is the people behind it. The staff are genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and clearly invested in their community. You can tell they care about supporting local artists, small businesses, and the neighborhood as a whole -- and that makes supporting them feel good too. If you want authentic Detroit gifts, thoughtful local products, and a shopping experience that feels personal rather than corporate, this spot absolutely delivers. I always look forward to coming back.

Tonight I have the pleasure of volunteering in the store wrapping gifts for The Ronald McDonald House. I've truly enjoyed seeing customer after customer come in with a personalized greeting for the owner, Rachael, as she addressing them by name. I love the class, style and quality of the clothes and home items. It's really nice to see men looking at the John Lennon Collection and Desigual brand clothing. Women are loving and purchasing coats, wraps. My holiday request for my kids are the Clara Clark sheets! I have to see why people are coming just hoping they are on sale. Wrapping gifts and listening to the shoppers has been fun tonight.

Last month I was searching for some special birthday gifts for my partner. Rachael and another employee took a lot of time guiding me through the store and answering my questions. I was especially looking for a shirt because a few years ago I had purchased a John Lennon shirt for myself and absolutely love it. Rachael showed me a beautiful Desigual shirt and I knew that my partner would truly like it. When I had finished paying for the three gifts, Rachael then offered to wrap them. She did a magnificent job and this past Saturday my partner opened his gifts. He was absolutely amazed by the Desigual shirt and insisted on wearing it to dinner that evening. It looked great on him! All evening, he received numerous compliments on the shirt from various folks at the restaurant. Rachael...THANK YOU! I (we) will definitely be back in the future.

Now, this Blick isn't two floors, in fact their one floor is only a fraction of that other store, but not every location can be that stacked. It's a smaller footprint but they pack a lot in. You don't usually get to see ceramic glazes and underglazes in arts & craft stores but they carry some which made me really happy as I was able to find a few of the underglazes I had been looking for. They also carry the Mayco brand (which no other ceramics specialty shops in the area I've been to carry) and I was able to find a few of their colors that I had had on my wish list. They have a ton of brushes, canvas, paints, pencils, solvents, etc, etc. All at various price points, so no matter what your background is, professional artist or novice, you can find something to either get you started or help you hone your craft. In addition to the art supplies they do have a small section of some miscellaneous gifty-type things which are also fun to browse (many of which would make great stocking stuffers). My last visit I got a keychain tape measure and I can't tell you how often I use that thing. Best couple of bucks I've ever spent! The other thing worth noting is that they do offer a "buy online pick up in the store" option which is great if you're in a hurry. If they don't have what you're looking for in shop they can find it for you in their online store. I've searched for some really random stuff over the years and I've always at least been able to find it on their website. Staff here is very nice and helpful. I love the mural on the wall outside, too. Fitting for such a great art store.
