This bus gets me from its first stop to Federal Street in under a half an hour, without the hassle of stopping at too many red lights, dealing with BU kids who have a state of the art fitness center yet can't be bothered to walk 100 extra feet to get to class, and people who smell like they haven't showered since the Reagan 80's. I have an extra half an hour in the morning to relax, an extra half an hour at night, and all for $30 a month extra. Well worth it. If you live within a mile of one of these express buses and you have to go downtown in the morning - this is the only way to travel. Pay the extra $30 - it will immediately improve the quality of your commute, and the quality of your life, and I stand by that statement.

In the interest of…read morefairness, I thought I should think of the absolute worst thing in Boston and then write my first 1 star review. Congratulations, C Line, you're the winner! (disclosure: I have only ridden the B line once, and it's admittedly worse, but the C is not far behind). For starters, go on youtube and search for "tokyo subway at rush hour." That comes CLOSE to demonstrating what the C train is like at rush hour. Nothing like starting your morning with a grouchy driver calling repeatedly through the speakers "Pack it in people, pack it in," as you are already cheek to cheek with three other people (I know, that sounds impossible, right? It's not.) and there are 10 more people trying to squeeze through each door. Forget getting a seat; you're lucky if you even get ON the train. And do NOT listen to the drivers when they say "doors are closing; there's another train right behind me." They are lying. If you can't see the next train, it isn't there. Sometimes it's 15 minutes before the next train comes. And when it does come, it might be too full to get on. The trains are supposed to come about every 7 minutes during rush hour. Sometimes they do, but it is not unusual to wait 20-30 minutes for a C train from Park Street. And don't even get me started with how often the trains break down or lose power. I would say AT LEAST weekly the power goes out, lights go off, and you have to sit there while it tries to find power again. Not to mention that there are 4 train lines that all use the same tracks once you get past Kenmore, so the trains get backed up and have to stop multiple times before pulling into each station. Do the drivers try to stop slowly? No, they hit the breaks to send you flying in a game of human dominoes since if you're packed into the middle of the train there isn't even anything within reach to hang on to. The stops on the C line are insanely close together. About every 2 blocks. And because the trains are so crowded, it takes ages for the people getting off to squeeze their way out and for other people to squeeze in. If you actually need to get somewhere at a certain time, plan on at LEAST 35 minutes to go 3 miles on the train, and well over an hour if you count time waiting for the train to arrive.

The biggest improvement in the system has been the introduction of the Charlie Card, which is similar to London's Oyster and is a "stored value" contactless card where you charge it up (or pay a monthly fee) and simply swipe it at the turnstile. Easy. The stations have narrow platforms. In many places, the concrete is cracked and stained. The announcements are difficult to hear or understand. The trains are loud and run down. The seating has exposed edges and places behind to put trash. I've ridden metros in more than two dozen cities. From Atlanta and Amsterdam, Basel and Brussels and even Tokyo and Taipei. I can honestly say that I have experienced better.

There is a total College town atmosphere in this station. Hippies outside, college kids…read morecongregating, puppies, musicians, artists and police in the midst of the cacophony of a mass transit station in one of the most chic neighborhoods in the country. History everywhere. Every cobblestone outside of the station has a tale of Puritans walking by, Paul Revere and William Dawes riding by, George Washington galloping next door, the former Thai King busily walking to his classes at the Yard, and of course, the smell of beer from the many pubs in the area. Only one time in recent memory, I had to pick up my husband at Star Market in Cambridge when the bus broke down with no relief in sight. Unlike some people I talk to in town, I love the fact that I can get to most places I need to with public transportation. As a kid, we even got all the way to Natasket Beach which fascinated me as a child - we could get "all the way" to the beach by mass transit. My only grip would be that whenever I am waiting for it at the Harvard station it "feels" like the 73 comes by way more than the 71 but the powers that be tell me that is not the case. One day I will sit there and document my findings but until then I guess it is only anecdotal.

This in turn forces new members of the community to own cars or resort to Uber or Lyft which brings more traffic into an already congested area. Add the 35,000 extra people flooding in during Red Sox games and concerts and you have to scratch your head and wonder why this bus route is always the target of cuts. Rather than the MBTA Promoting the benefits and convenience of using this bus service they slash service discouraging use. This bus is a little specialized for those living in the Fenway area- but if you ever have friends that want to have drinks before going downtown, don't fret the walk! You can easily pick up the bus and be dropped off in prime locations on Boylston St. Going back, on the other hand, seems to take forever- I've only ever picked it up at Copley or outside the Prudential Center (Cheesecake Factory entrance)- but again, usually always on time.

This tends to happen modt often on Fridays (like this one), and is completely unannounced, so I'll assume it's because the MBTA literally has only one driver available for this route and doesn't bother to find a replacement for our Chelsea boy who just spent a long weekend hugging porcelain in the bathroom of the Tavern at the End of the World. I've also had the pleasure of taking this bus in the middle of the day, when I am literally the only rider for the entire route. It was really creepy and the bus smelled like bad gin and I wouldn't recommend it. If the MBTA were to do something actually useful, like hire a systems analyst, then they might figure out that running routes like this north of the river in the middle of the day when everyone is at work downtown is a huge waste of money. The savings could then be used to not only pay that systems analyst's crappy government salary, but also would allow the 85 to run later at night when people actually need it, and on weekends, again, when people actually need it.

It's a commuter bus line that runs until around 7:30pm only Monday through Friday. I hate this bus because it seems to run on a random schedule that changes daily. This is mostly because there's one bus that runs in a loop and it gets stuck in traffic going through Union Square. Also, because there's only one bus, it only runs about every 40 minutes in the morning - so your choices are 8:10 or 8:40 (give or take a few minutes). Also, the current bus driver is seriously the most surly individual on the planet. A few weeks ago the buzzer was broken and he just skipped a lot of the stops near/around Union Square. A woman was standing near the front told him so and he said "Do I LOOK like a mind reader?" and when she explained that standing near the front should signal that she wanted to get off he said "Oh yea? And how'd that work out for you?". So, if you don't mind the nasty driver and random arrival times - the 85 bus is a pretty convenient route to get you from Somerville to Cambridge.

Kendall Square has changed alot over the years. It's become a much more attractive neighborhood to…read morelive and work which caused a development boom that's still going on. It remains a world renowned tech hub with the likes of Google, Microsoft, Amazon and of course MIT. It's dining options are not as good as say Central or Porter and still caters to the commuter crowd. The places I like to go in Kendall are Shy Bird, State Park, Cambridge Brewing Company, and Dumpling Daughter. Kendall is very pedestrian and bike friendly. Despite all the changes to the neighborhood over the years, thankfully the Kendall Square Cinema is still around and thriving.
