Here in Hingham, that "inside" is the Hingham Ferry Terminal. A large block building that is mostly offices but actually has a waiting area, clean restrooms and a counter where you can purchase tickets for the ferry. The building is handicapped accessible and the way from here down to the ship is not perfectly handicapped accessible (it is a floating dock) but it can be navigated by wheelchair. There are also handrails for most of the journey. There is a large parking lot available.

I would like to highlight our tour guide and narrator, Lindsay who is a naturalist and someone whose passion, expertise and knowledge was palpable. She is articulate and personable combining just the right amount of enthusiasm and humor throughout the trip. You could feel not only her energy but her authentic respect and devotion to educating others about these giants of the ocean. I feel blessed everyday that I get to live near the ocean here in Massachusetts and to know these amazing mammals live and breathe in our waters. The captain maintained a speed completely inappropriate for the sea state, causing violent hull slamming for nearly the entire crossing. Passengers were being thrown around, hanging onto tables just to stay upright. Several people were vomiting. This went on for an hour. At multiple points, the impact force was strong enough that injuries could easily have occurred and may have. With roughly 100 passengers aboard, this was not just uncomfortable -- it was dangerous. They better hope lawsuits do not come their way. The weather and wave conditions were fully predictable well before departure. Any competent operator would have known to reduce speed, adjust heading, or delay the trip. Instead, the captain chose to plow through steep chop at high speed, ignoring basic seamanship principles and putting everyone at unnecessary risk. To make matters worse, the crew announcer praised the captain afterward and asked for tips, while many passengers were shaken and demanding refunds. The disconnect between the crew's messaging and the reality of the situation was astonishing. This was not an unavoidable rough ride -- it was the result of reckless decision‑making. The captain's handling of the vessel was unacceptable, and the company should be held accountable for allowing a trip to be run in such a manner. Captain Johns needs to re-evaluate their quality control and training protocols.

When I was planning a trip from Boston to Long Island, I saw on Google Maps there was a ferry…read moreoption that would cut my driving time almost exactly in half. Having lived in NYC for almost a decade, I had no idea the Cross Sound Ferry existed; I thought I'd just put up with the atrocious weekend traffic in and out of Long Island. Pros: (+) The car loading process was very organized. The workers were friendly and efficient. Both my outbound and return trips left very nearly on time, which I appreciated. (+) I lucked out with beautiful weather and calm waters both times. Sitting on the top deck, basking in the sunlight, watching the coastline come into view definitely beat sitting in a bad traffic jam. If I ever go to Long Island, this is the way to travel. (I also get pretty bad seasickness and worried for days over the forecast for nothing; the ships were so smooth, I didn't feel a thing.) (+) Depending on the vessel, you can also get a history lesson. I took the MV Cape Henlopen back, which participated in D-Day. There's a commemorative plaque and everything. (+) Dog friendly! (+) Lots of seats, both indoor and outdoor. Pro tip: bring a beach towel with you so you don't burn your booty. Cons: (-) Not really a con exactly but a warning that they pack the cars in like sardines. I felt bad for the one car that had to park on a steep incline. (-) My round-trip ferry cost about $160, which is ... not exactly cheap. To me, it was worth the time saved and maybe the tolls of coming through the city and LI (though I didn't do the math) but yeah, I can see why the cost might put people off. Tips: 1. Book in advance on the website early. 2. Get to the ferry terminal early. They have a 30-minute rule for larger cars and a 15-minute rule for all other cars, otherwise you're bumped to standby and there might not be a spot. 3. From a navigation perspective, I found getting to/from New London, CT and Orient Point, NY a breeze. There are some very cute farm stands along the road to Orient Point, where you can stop and get fresh strawberries, eggs, lavender, and honey.
