I started getting serious about my health after my first son was born in 2013 by joining MBX. I wanted to be able to keep up with him as he got older. Little did I know, I'd be having twin boys 3 1/2 year later. I do like that they are concerned with people learning correct movements and form rather than attempting crazy weight and using improper technique. I came in and met with Michelle who was one of the coaches. She was really helpful and her class was amazing!!! Before I purchased a LivingSocial for MBX, I did what I always do and checked Yelp. Even though MBX Crossfit had 5 stars, I was a bit skeptical because all of the reviews were written on the same day. Regardless, the LS was a great deal and I snagged it. I was terrified to start, and put it off. After a few weeks, I decided to bite the bullet and called MBX to see if I could come in (it was a Thursday.) Words to the Wise: Don't start in the middle of the week if you're new. I had never done Crossfit. It was hard enough getting the Mojo to show up because internally, I wanted to run to 24hr Fitness and cry. I felt like a chicken with my head cut off in the "Beginners" course. Mike (owner I believe) did what he could to show me the ropes and some basic exercises to start. If the whole session was like this I probably would've been back. Instead, I was given direction by another coach to simultaneously join in with the group. I can appreciate the "hit the ground" running approach, but their way of executing this left me feeling like a fish out of water...no one even told me what a "WOD" was the entire time. It wasn't until I went elsewhere that I realized how much clear direction MBX was lacking. At the end of my day (I was still so confused), one of the coaches asked me if I knew how to stretch. I said I sometimes do yoga, and he advised me that "You probably know better how to stretch then and you can go ahead." I left (still needing to stretch) and with a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not giving this place just 1 star because I know their training does work, and it works you hard. You are tired, you are sore as hell the next day, and the facilities are great. I'm sure if I kept going, I'd build camaraderie with the others and strength for myself. But in my heart, I felt awful after. As a paying customer with zero experience, this was not what I imagined for my first time. At one point I was sarcastically told to clap like a cheerleader while doing burpees, and it was then that I realized I wasn't going to feel encouraged here. I tried other places, and I'm happy that I shopped around. Your first day of Crossfit should not remind you of your first day of high school. read more

I love this place! I started going on a LivingSocial voucher, and I was hooked from day one. I have never had a better work out or had so much fun "torturing" my body. I have no doubt MBX is going to help get me ripped and in the best shape of my life at age 33. The no-bullshit, no excuses atmosphere is refreshing to this former New Yorker. The coaches don't mess around, they WILL push you and you may hate them (although they are super cool and really hard to hate), but you will thank them later and come back for more! My body has done things I never thought it was capable of doing. In a week's time, I am feeling more energized and more excited than I have ever been about working out. I feel it in my body every day. I am motivated to push harder, become stronger, and I know MBX is going to get me where I want to be. I had a moment last week where I wanted to quit. I was exhausted and embarrassed that I was about to be the last one to finish, and wasn't sure if I'd puke or cry first. I held it together, as EVERY person in the place encouraged me to keep going- including fellow CF-ers, my coach, someone's kid waiting for their dad... everyone. There was no judgement because I was doing what I set out to do. When I finished that last burpee, I stood up with pride, sweat dripping, and couldn't help but smile. I was happy because I had finished it, but I could not have done it without that encouragement and support. I'm not embarrassed when I see those people in other classes, I'm thankful they are there. I was vaguely familiar with Crossfit from some very talented trainers on Youtube. When I saw a livingsocial deal for a month-long membership, I snapped it up. First day and first impressions: MBX Crossfit is not your typical 24 Hour Fitness or Gold's Gym. Instead of being in a strip mall, it's in an industrial warehouse park. When you walk in, you see ropes and gymnastic rings hanging from the ceiling, boxes and tires on the floor, and pullup bars with racks for barbells. There are no treadmills, or any weight machines, just a few rowing machines. Along the walls there are kettlebells, medicine balls, large tires, jump ropes, and other equipment. Unlike the typical everyone-for-themselves gym experience, Crossfit is class based. It takes a few classes to learn how to use all the equipment. One very enjoyable effect of the class structure is the resulting team spirit. Everyone is very friendly and cheers you on. It is incredibly motivating to see other people doing crazy things (you have to join to see some of this stuff). The classes utilize a circuit training approach that alternates large muscle group lifts with cardio. The first part of every class is a warmup that usually involves low or no weights. The second part is strength building. Beginners usually spend this portion of the class learning new exercises. The final part of every class is the WOD, or Workout of the Day. Every day, there is a new and different WOD. After 15 classes in the first month, I haven't repeated a WOD. I was impressed that Coach Mike, the owner, took the lead in teaching the beginner class. The secondary instructors were helpful as well, and I felt that I got the personal attention I needed in learning the unfamiliar Olympic-style lifts. I have a nagging case of jumper's knee that I need to be careful with. When I told Mike, he was glad to spend extra time critiquing my form and showing me how to regress exercises that might put strain on my knee. After coming for a month, I have noticed a huge improvement in my strength, especially core and stability. I have more energy during the day, and feel tired but accomplished after the workouts. The atmosphere of MBX Crossfit is my favorite part of the gym, although it's hard to describe. Coach Mike is passionate about what he does, but without promoting himself. There's a bit of competition among members, especially for timed WODs, but there's just as much support. People are friendly and introduce themselves to new people all the time. There's a healthy balance between pushing yourself, and doing what you can. read more

HORRIBLE!!! HORRIBLE !!! H O R R I B L E !!!! purchased a Living Social for this place. Not only was the situation disorganized but the beginners class that I was scheduled to work at got cancelled then re started again. my experience is absolutely of horror and embarrassment. I am ex-military honored with a Silver Star. For acts of valor. My atletic ability has dwindled over the years due to my injury. Not to mention the fact I have been intimidated in going into a gym. Went to M B X to help jumpstart my life into fitness again. 5 minutes into the workout I was already breathing hard and sweating. Starting to get the feeling of a great workout. When the owner decided to embarrass me. By stating that I was not physically fit enough to be in his gym, that I did not have the level of fitness to be there. Asking me to get a doctors note to come back. Send this loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. I thought that was his job. To help people get physical fitness. Escalate their level of fitness to where they want it to be. Apparently this gym requires you to be at a higher level to even walk in the door. it was my assumption that that is what they were there to do. To help somebody get into shape. Apparently unless you are already fit they want nothing to do with you. And the fact that you use a living social coupon. The owner look down on you and does not show any attention towards that person. I would never recommend this place to anybody. I left horrified frustrated and definitely over the time became pissed off. Call the owner on the phone to see if there was something we could work out to get me to that level. After a 10 minute conversation he decided it was better to just hang up Ben help a vetteran get back in shape. . there are so many CrossFit places here in Southern California and in the valley that so supersede the quality of people that you will deal with. I have found my home at a new CrossFit facility. I would never recommend this to anybody and would definitely refer other people to look into another CrossFit place other than this. read more

Best workouts ever! Great variety and good community. I had tried CrossFit somewhere else a year ago but it ended with a pop and some pretty awful back pain. I was a little nervous to try it a second time, but coach Mike and the crew helped me out a ton. They made sure I was getting a solid workout without jacking myself up. I was in pretty bad shape with some knee and back issues before I started, but after a few weeks I couldn't wait for the next work out. The stabilizing muscles I built in my core and legs also significantly reduce my knee and back discomfort. Highly recommend! read more

What an awesome place! I purchased an "unlimited classes for a month" deal on living social. The beginners class is filled with everyday jane/joes so it wasn't intimidating at all! Coach Jason was very knowledgeable and made sure you had all the basic moves and techniques down before joining the main class. Coach Mike (Owner) is the Mad Scientist that thinks of insane WODS (Workout Of the Day). I started off saying to myself "50is the amount of weight not reps right? RIGHT??" LoL I still shake when I hear the name "Fran" .. And that "Sally Get Down" song This box is all about using proper form and technique instead of time and weight. My competitive side got the best of me but in no time I was called out and corrected. I've been going to MBX for two weeks. Coach Mike has been really helpful in teaching and introducing crossfit to beginners like me. I have been tremendously out of shape due to having a full-time job, school, and horrible eating habits. Now that school is out, I decided to join a crossfit gym, and MBX was recommended by a fellow Matador. I have been the slowest person at each session (always last at everything), but I can see improvements in myself each day that I have attended. The encouragement of the other members and Coach Mike keeps me going. The sense of accomplishment after completing each WOD is actually very self-fulfilling. I must say I was blown away by my first class last night. I had previously purchased a Living Social deal to another box before and the experience was night and day from MBX Crossfit. At MBX, Mike and the other instructors really paid attention to each participant, made sure that we learned good form and taught us each move. At the box I previously tried, I was thrown in with everyone else (experienced and not experienced crossfitters - needless to say my form was horrible and I couldn't extend my arms all the way for a week). If you are new to crossfit and are looking for a great box that will teach you the fundamentals - this is the perfect place. The coaches were encouraging, they helped us to get introduced to the other participants in the box and most importantly, stretching is a part of the program (foam rollers are INCREDIBLE). Don't take the 3 stars and below too seriously - these guys are fun, they play great music, they are a little snarky (in a funny way - I actually laughed when a coach suggested we clap like cheerleaders at the top of our burpees - its a dreadful exercise, why not make it fun?), they won't let you quit on yourself, and they will make sure you know your limits (I have asthma and they kept a watchful eye on me). Long story short - this is a great box, that doesn't just talk about a welcoming environment, they live up to it everyday. Excited for class tonight, even though ya'll kicked my tail! read more

I'm in love with this box! Mike and his team really push me to continue even when I can't. I haven't worked out in yearssssssss and now I'm working out at least 4x a week. I shared with Mike that my dad passed away from a heart attack and how I struggle with compulsive eating. He shared with me a similar story about his grandpa and validated my fears, my eating, my sadness and everything in between . I continue to struggle but honestly each day is a struggle but my biggest struggle is "getting through that door to work out" . I won't give up! I attended a birthday party for my coaches son at the box (gym) today. I had received the kindest compliments from so many different people. I was given hugs and praises, being told that I'm making such great progress. One of the girls I work out with tells me that she shares my story and my before/after pictures to inspire her coworkers to work out. She tells them "if she can do it, you can do it!" How cool is that?! I'm flattered. When I was turning my car on to go home, a woman approached my car window just to tell me how amazing I looked and how she remembered what I looked like when I first started at CrossFit. These people are the reason I love working out at MBX, they are my friends and the ones who challenge themselves along side me. If they can do it, why can't I?! read more

I don't think I will be able to walk tomorrow... And I'm so excited about that. I am a beginner with fitness, mind you. And I was extremely scared of the xfit stigma... The " do you even lift bro" memes and cult-like stereotypes are kind of much. Many of my friends have been encouraging me to check this place out for years... but could not let that stereotype out of my head. So, I tried other ways to work out...but, Frustrated with my lack of progress, I gave this place a shot. And you should too. You will not regret it. Coach Vic and coach mike are so friendly and informative. We started the workout by introducing ourselves to the other athletes at the gym (who ranged in all athletic abilities!). I go to 24 hour fitness normally- none of my instructors have ever bothered to even introduce themselves.. I thought that was a sincere touch and promoted a very family fitness environment. We did a warm up, stretches, and lead to our WOD. Oh man. You'll get through it. Everyone will encourage you and your coaches will guide you! They will even moderate the WOD to your fitness ability. And trust me, they will push you and take you to a fitness level you've never reached before. They'll support your goals and will cheer you on along the way (and even hold you accountable for those slip ups, (sorry about the post WOD in n out) There's always a deal to join and they have Zumba classes on Friday. I'm not local but will definitely come by when I'm in town and need my booty kicked lol. read more

You walk into Bootoga and see people in a yoga space with their shoes off and you assume that this must be a chill yoga class, but how wrong you would be. Jeanette Ortega has created an amazingly challenging class that not only tests your balance and flexibility, but your strength and stamina. It is a full body workout that you will sweat through and come out feeling like you have really accomplished a great feat. Definitely worth the effort!!!! read more

After having my daughter it was extremely difficult losing the baby weight let alone building strength and endurance through my workouts. I found myself at the gym pretty clueless about what type of workouts I should be performing and felt very unmotivated by my lack of knowledge and direction. I was no stranger to MBX Athletics as my own husband and friends have trained at this gym, but I always felt afraid joining a "cross fit gym." Little did I know that I was about to join a Family. in the first month of joining MBX I lost 10 lbs I gained muscle definition and I lost my fear in weightlifting. The trainers are always motivating you, teaching you throughout the class and have workout routines ready for you when you come. There is never a dull moment I think that MBX Athletics is the Gem of the Valley. The fact that you join contract free, is a HUGE plus for me! I love that I am able to get my Yoga, Kickboxing, boot camp and cross training all in one gym and If I don't feel like taking a class I can always use the gym for my own necessities. Its just superb!! I cant express how amazing and supportive the coaches are. Shout out to Jeanette Ortega for providing the best Yoga experiences and your Kickboxing classes are no joke!! let me break it down. couldn't find this "gym" we arrived at this gym maybe like 4 minutes late to be exact and as we walked in we didn't know who to ask about redeeming our vouchers we had bought from living social. everyone just starred at us until I think the coach walked up to us, wasn't really a friendly welcome said we were extremely late because the class had already started and asked us to come back at 7:30 because the 6:30 was members only and then went and said that we couldn't attend the 7:30 class because it was advanced , i was curious as too what advanced meant since I have done crossfit in the past he said it was pull ups hand stand push ups and he said its heavy weight first of all everything can be modified the hand stand push ups, the pull ups, and the heavy weight. he went on and finished say its for "athletes" he was rude. not friendly at all and didn't really seem interested in helping us because we had bought or membership from living social. if you want to go to a really good crossfit gym check out crossfit chatsworth its a bigger gym friendlier people and they teach you the actual methods of lifting "heavy weight" in my opinion this gym is one of those fake crossfit gyms everyone warns you about. read more

I got a LivingSocial deal and decided to give this place a shot since I have always worked out on and off but never tried a Crossfit gym. I'm sure this Crossfit gym doesn't work as others do, but it was a horrible experience and I didn't even get to start working out. I decided to go in on a friday and talked to "Mike" while he was on his phone and playing music out the speakers for the gym. I could barely hear as it was because he was sitting right next to the speakers as I tried to talk to him. He barely even raised his eyes up as I tried to explain to him that I had a LivingSocial deal and had my voucher in hand. I was telling him it was my first time there and before I could finish my sentence he rudely interrupted, raised his hand in front of my face and said "You start monday at 7:30" and waved me away with his hand. Basically a big "F***K You" to me. I stood there for a second thinking, is this really how you do business. He went back to his phone and never looked up again so I walked out and I am not going back. He talked down on me as if I was a nobody, in the end I guess he wins because he got the money and doesn't even have to "train" me, but I just felt like I had to say something because I felt like I got treated like crap. I will now have to look for a different Crossfit gym as I still want to give it a shot. read more

What can I say about this gym other than it is changing the quality of my life. I have a herniated disc and have been suffering with chronic back pain for 2 years. Surgery and epidural shots are just not an option. Instead I have started a physical therapy style training here at MBX and for the first time I have felt a relief that only chiropractic care was able to achieve. Not only am i getting fit but I'm getting better. Thank you to the coaches for being knowleadgeable and caring enough to get me through this! This gym is truly tailored for all fitness levels. Discovered this xfit gym through groupon purchase of a book of 10 classes and decided to give it a try since I have prior experience. Tried giving them a call but no one ever answered so I left a voicemail to my disappointment no one ever called me back. So I finally decided to leave a message online, only to get a call a few days late. In the message I informed them I had a groupon but wanted to know what the process was and in reply was told: Hi Aubrey, I believe you already spoke with our owner, if not, I wanted to reach out to you. We are booked tonight at 630 pm and 730pm. The next set of classes is Monday at 330pm, 630pm and 730pm. If you would like to take a course, please arrive 15 mind early so that we can have you sign a waiver and get you going. Thank you and have a great day Membership Staff MBX CrossFit 19555 Parthenia Ave Northridge Ca 91324 I ended up going in on Monday the 11th and there was a guy who was sitting at the front, not sure who he was he was an Asian guy though, I told him that I was there for my first class and I had a groupon he told me told hold on and then went to get someone in charge. I then proceeded to tell them the same thing, they then had me fill out a waiver and then said "the 6:30 class starts in 5 mins." The class started and yes it was a good work out/wod but nothing I haven't done before. After it was over all I was told was to come back the next day so I went the following day and was told the same. I didn't go back the 3rd day because I left out of town. I ended up going back 2 weeks later to finally redeem my groupon voucher and explained my situation to who I think was the owner and was told "You need to contact groupon to get a refund we wont honor it since you have taken the first week" I was so confused because I had only taken 2 classes and purchased a book of 10 classes from goupon so in my head this made no sense and tried to get some clarity. The owner keep insisting to contact groupon because I had already taken the week, which I only took 2 and didn't complete the full week which was due to leaving out of town, still I took no where near 10 classes so as a business they should still honor and hold up their end of a deal but I guess that's the way these guys get you in there. I was so bugged and upset and the care less attitude this owner displayed I told him "I'll just contact groupon and walked out" Not one person ever explained the process of taking 4 beginners classes and then continuing from there. This place needs a little more organization and start with maybe answering your phone to assist potential customers, having a point of contact when someone walks in who actually works there and lastly explain how things actually work there. Its a shame that my experiece there had to be so horrible but maybe they need to be more clear in the info given out on groupon. read more

I never thought I'd love Crossfit the way I do now. I love MBX Crossfit. I love the challenge and drive I get as soon as I walk into the box. I always feel like I want to do better than the day before. That has never been the case when I was a member at any gym. With the support and motivation from the coaches and other members at MBX, I see myself striving and pushing for better results. I truly love MBX. This is my first time joining a gym and it's been a great experience for me. The coaches and members are all very welcoming and motivating. I love it so much that I go pretty much everyday. I purchased a Groupon for a month trial to this location. The instructions requested that you call in prior to going in to redeem the Groupon. When I called the person who answered the phone had a very rude tone and I couldn't understand what they said. So I asked was this crossfit MBX. The guy says, "No, this is MBX Athletics." Well excuuuuuse me for saying the name wrong mister bad attitude. He could have politely corrected me as I have never been a customer of this establishment. I then proceed to inform him that I bought my Groupon for a month trial and not once did he say thank you or welcome, he just tells me the class times and days like I was a waste of his time. For people who are looking for a gym location, who are seeking your help, that's a bad first impression. I've been coming here since last year in August. What drove me to continue at this gym was the positive atmosphere that came from the athletes and the coaches! I drive about 26 miles round trip to my gym and it doesn't phase me because I love the way I'm motivated to workout when I get to the gym. I mostly workout in the morning usually the 830am and occasionally the 530am. Both classes are great. Each coach is different and great in their own way. Coach Mike wants me go to faster and coach Victor pushes me to lift heavier!!! It's the best of both worlds! Definitely see myself coming here Forever! This place is amazing. It's super intimidating at first but the coaches and even the members were welcoming. I took 3 classes and was hooked. They have a cool goal board where all the members take a photo and post what goal they want to achieve each month. Mike, Evina, Vic and Michelle are awesommmmeee.
