In the many years I have been coming here I have been abused, lied to, (at best) ignored and generally screwed over. I kept coming back as it was close to my house. I swore I would never go back in, and then I would be there buying a box of ammo....it was on the grocery list and I was driving by...and how bad can it be? Well, pretty bad. They can turn a simple transaction into something that ruins your whole day. They get away with it due to a great location, no overhead, and a great economy. My reviee is strictly regarding their gunsmithing services. Their gunsmiths might be good for all the old an classical firearms, but they have not the foggiest idead when it comes to the black rifle (AR15). Why do I say that? Well, let's see: In took in all the parts to get an upper receiver assembled, and they managed to install the YHM handguard incorrectly. They used a ROLL PUNCH to torque the barrel nut and damaging some gas tube porta in the process. Moreover, i get home and the gas block was installed backwards and the gas port on the tube was outside the block altogether. The bolt would not close since the gas tube protuded more into the upper receiver than it should. So the upper was unusable. What was the cost for this fine work? $85 and it took 2 weeks! when I realized the scope of their mess, i found another company to fix their f**k up for $35 at GDS enterprises in 30 minutes! Bottom line is: if you have an AR15 you need a gunsmith, do not go to McBrides! read more

Wow, you guys, and I thought the horrible "Customer Service" (lack thereof) was because I'm female-- none of the gun guys seem to change their attitude when I tell them I'm a 21+ year Army veteran, fired expert at M-16 rifle, Baretta 9 mm. The guys behind the counter actually know something. More than I can say for most stores that sell guns around here. Prices are fair especailly for a privatly owned place. Theyy have a good selection of guns. A little lacking in shooting gear and ammo. Their reloading section isn't bad but not great. I don't know about the real gunsmith statement above. I tried to get a simple job done I would have done if I had a drill press. They said they couldn't do it. I guess they just mount scopes and all that other so called gunsmithing stuff anyone can do. read more

I have occasionally shopped at McBrides for many years. They have a huge inventory of firearms, both old, used, and new, which is my interest. Rare firearms are also there. The only knocks against the place, is they only have had one gunsmith, who is backlogged for months, and some of the salesman behind the gun counter are rude, impatient , and downright obnoxious. If you can tolarate that, it is the only two major issues I have had with them. read more

On two separate occasions I went in with only a few other people in the shop and I waited 45 minutes for no one to even attempt to help me. I have done business with this fine firm since I arrived in the late 70s. The gunsmith's have been excellent. The counter staff is very knowledgeable. Joe does everything he can to satisfy his customers. The selection is great. A lot of specialty stuff & black powder. Many used & classic firearms and the prices beat most big box stores. It is often busy & crowded so expect a short wait at the counter. I enjoy just stopping in for a look around. It's a very personable personal business. read more

I agree with all the reviews that say these guys are unique. I don't agree that they are inattentive or rude as I didn't witness or experience this. I found the staff professional and polite. I was told their prices were unbeatable but found their prices were comparable to discount shops and they had what I wanted in stock while the discount shops did not. McBride's has a great selection of guns and related accessories. However, their staff is a complete disaster in terms of rudeness and condescension. I freely admit I am not a gun expert, nor am I a newbie either. Asking questions should not result in being talked down to or ignored. Taking my wife in there to buy her first gun and encouraging her to ask questions was a complete disaster. I will never shop here again. Only hiring old, angry dudes with superiority complexes are not the type of people I want around firearms, much less do business with. Save yourself the attitude, go to GT Distributors where they are actually friendly, have the selection, and fair prices. read more

It is unfortunate that McBride's Gunsmiths are the only one locally to repair your firearm that I am aware of. I had to bring my rifle back 3 times for the exact same issue. The gunsmith claimed he repaired it but when I questioned him on it(since I paid for the same repair twice)he told me to get my !@#$%ing !@# out of his gunroom and that I had a poor attitude. My opinion of McBride's is that it is over priced, poor customer relations, and the only thing supporting it is the old money that has been shopping there for decades. On a positive note Mr McBride got involved with the situation and refunded my money for the repairs which I appreciated, but that was expected by a business owner. Also, for the record the gunsmith did get it right the 3RD TIME!!! read more

My husband and I shopped at McBride's a few days ago. The salesman really put us off. His name is Tom. He violently coughed, picked and blew his nose the whole time he waited on us. To make matters worse, he used the the same handkerchief to wipe his face! (He was sweating profusely). Who hire's a person like that? That is a direct reflection on the store itself. I went to McBride's to have adjustable fiber optic sights put on the new slide of the Browning Hi-Power that I'm restoring. When finished two weeks later, the sights were perfectly mounted and aligned, and there wasn't a scratch on either the sights or my new slide. Excellent job! read more

I was in McBride's this morning and have been there several times. usually I am greeted by a very nice and pleasant sales staff. However, this morning I has an FFL transfer and needed help with it. I was "helped" by Clayton this morning. He was the most rude and unprofessional person I have ever dealt with in that shop. He acted like I was bothering him by asking for his help and advice. Well thanks to your treatment of me this morning mr. Clayton, I will not be returning to McBride's for and of my hunting or shooting needs. Thanks for nothing! These guys are crooks. I went in to buy the FNX .45ACP and of course they did not have the new FN products well he talked me into the FNP .45ACP man is it a piece of shit! I took it back after I fired and it jammed repeatedly. I wanted to trade it up to the FN 5.7 and spend the additional money with them. Well they offered to give me less than a pawn shop would! They charged me 750.00 for a gun I could have got online for 600.00 and offered me 275 back for it when I was trying to spend an additional 6-700 dollars. Everything in there is overpriced plus you have to pay tax! Order online these guys suck I will NEVER use them for a firearm purchase again. They don't like repeat business! I'll never buy anything from McBrides again. I buy a lot of guns. I've sold a lot of guns. I like guns and gun people. Everyone said go to McBrides in Austin. I usually go to John's in Bastrop, who is a good guy. I bought a Kel Tec PF9 .9mm for $270.00 to take on the road to Colo. Never opened it or the box. Have an emergency in Austin and need to drive back from Colo Springs in a hurry. Called and asked if they would take the gun back and issue a refund on the gun I purchased new two mos. ago. Man on phone said owner would give $200.00....now isn't that customer service. PF9s are going for $300 in Colorado Springs. I'll just charge the trip to my credit card and either keep the gun or sell it when I get back. But I'll never do business with such a greedy jerk again! Even Walmart gives better service. I have gone into the store to browse several times and they will totally ignore me. I went in to McBride's recently to find a concealed-carry pistol. On background: I have 28 years' experience in the Marines, and possess a concealed carry license, so I know guns. But I have never carried one concealed, and wanted some advice. The salesman was completely, zero, absolutely no help at all. He told me HE carried a .45 Colt Auto as HIS concealed-carry gun! I guess I was supposed to be impressed by that. This is a very powerful, bulky handgun, and one difficult to hide -- a major requirement for concealed carry. But since I'm actually pretty familiar with the Colt (I carried one for many years, and both Uncle Sam and the NRA think I'm an Expert with it), I looked at him askance. He proceeded to show me, by various shoves across the counter to my midsection, just how perfect his concealment concept was. I objected to that tack, although I didn't actually deck him on the spot, and asked what might be a better firearm for concealed carry (I'm prepared here to spend well over $500 on this, considering gun plus holster plus ammunition plus cleaning stuff), but the guy said he couldn't suggest any solutions -- ALL guns, he said, will work as concealed carry weapons. This is nonsense, as well as extraordinarily poor customer service. The main reason I go to local businesses over the chain stores is for superior customer service. I guess my only recourse now is to go to the local Dick's Sporting Goods or drive down to Cabela's, and rely on my own instincts. I purchased a Sig Sauer .45 3 weeks ago for approximately $950 which was still in the box and never fired. I also had .22 bolt action that I had bought from them several years ago that I wanted to sell. My plan was to return the new one and sell the .22 in order to upgrade to a new HK .45. Mr McBride offered me $650 for both. So he wanted to get I my shorts for $300 on the Sig I bought from them and allow me to give them the .22 for free. I looked back at my records and since 8/6/15 I have spent over $4300 with them for the Sig, a Ruger .22, a Bersa .380, an Ammolite AR-15, with ammo and cases for each. I have also bought 4 gold coins, about 10 silver eagles and about 20 ounces of silver. This was over $2000 with the coin shop. I believe in buying local and could have got points buying at Cabela's. Instead I was loyal to McBride's. Not anymore, I will never darken their door again! You should have some integrity in business especially to loyal customers. Heading to Gander Mountain today to buy that $1400 HK instead of waiting on McBride's to order it. read more

I have spent quite a bit of money here, which I can spend it somewhere else. Really untrained staff with really bad attitudes. You walk in and you're lucky if you even get somebody to talk to you! I ran into an old gentleman a few times, first time he shook my hand then second time he walked past me and he asked how I am doing, my response was thanks very well. I was shocked for a bit and I asked around and was told he was Mr. McBride. With all this time passing around and me visiting the store, I decided to not go back again because the way the people behind the counter treat their customers. Another old man in the back office pissed me the F*** off while I was waiting for an item. I walked into his office and he was supposed to be in charge of shipping department. All he kept saying was what do you want what do you want what do you want!????! This prick was unprofessional and acted he had no time for me at all! That prick should be home watching t.v and cracking nuts, not treating paid customers horribly. I love academy with better prices and better customer services, they for sure will have my business for the rest of the time. I want to be treated well not like S***. read more

Last October I purchased a small (but very expensive) personal carry semi-auto pistol. The first time it was taken to the range we couldn't get a full clip to fire properly. Took it back to McBride's and of course they couldn't find anything wrong with it. We were told that it was the ammunition that we were using. "Buy our ammunition and that will fix your problem". Well we purchased their overly expensive bullets and it did not "fix our problem". We ended up having to ship the gun back to the manufacture. It had a cracked frame. McBride sold me a defective weapon and refused to acknowledge there was anything wrong with it. Now that the frame has been replaced it is considered a "new gun" and the manufacturer had to send it back to a licensed dealer and I am once again at McBride's mercy to get the damn thing back. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE AS MUCH AS EAR PLUGS FROM THEM EVER AGAIN!!! read more

My sons and I all reload, we have several rifles and pistols, and when we go to the range we like to blow it up, 600 rounds minimum. I figured we might save a long drive and give McBrides a shot. I called several times over two days (dozens of calls), finally someone picked up. Talked to the first clerk who listened to my request only to answer with he did not know what brands of ammo they carried and finally put me onto the next clerk. This second older gentleman seemed very helpfull, asked what I needed, seemed to be very friendly and helpful. He told me he would check their stock and call me back. I thought maybe the reviews on the bad customer service at this place may have been a little over exagerated. But more than two hours later(closing time now) no call back. Needless to say my family will make the run to Cabelas where we know they have what we need and we get great service if we are dropping a twenty or a few hundred. After reading similar reviews about McBrides they do great marketing for their copetition via their lousy service. One shot One chance, these guys failed read more

I have been going to Mcbrides for over a year and have purchased several firearms there. I have heard some people say that the service is not good and the people are not friendly. I guess what I would say to that is that you need to get through the hard candy shell to get to the sweet center. The sales staff are competent yet are reserved which may seem somewhat off-putting to some people. I would just say you need to be objective in your analysis. The sales staff are quick and they are knowledgeable and if you get to know them a bit they are actually pretty friendly. You certainly won't have to pick a number to see a firearm like you do at Cabelas. The staff also ensure the firearms aren't mishandled or damaged by customers like slamming the slide forward on a 1911 with an empty chamber. The prices are perhaps a little higher than elsewhere or online but they are still competitive with other local businesses. You can also haggle about the price. They will wheel and deal a little bit. And one other great thing is McBrides is dog friendly or at least they are to my chocolate lab. I like McBrides and will continue to shop there. read more

You keep going to Walmart and Academy. I will buy my guns from McBrides. I try and go there at least once a week and their inventory turnover is incredible. I may be a little different breed of gun buyer than some of the put off reviewers. I have only bought one new gun(from Mcbrides) in my life, all of my other gun purchases are used. I am purely a price and function guy. If the gun will shoot accurately and function well I don't care if you have pink hello kitty's painted all over it. That said I have purchased some incredible deals there over the years. If you see something you like in their used hand guns buy it. If you come back tomorrow it will be gone. One day I walked out with 2 Berettas. I have not come across either one of them for less than $100 more than I paid. As I travel around the country I have visited as many gun store as I can. McBrides is one of the best. Sure their salespeople are a bit surly at times, but when that store is packed on the weekend you might get a little testy too. When you want your chain store weapon fixed take it back to them, I will take mine back to Mcbrides who has the gunsmiths upstairs. read more

I have purchased a couple firearms and a spotting scope over the years from Mcbrides and all transactions went well. I have also gone there to 'browse' many times. When I have been there the place has always been pretty crowded. A couple of the times I felt kind of ignored but then again I was browsing and didn't ask any questions. Yesterday I went looking for a specific handgun(s), either a S&W 41 or high standard 22lr. I was greeted by multiple employees each asking if I needed help. I said I was just looking and was told feel free to ask questions and if you want to see something then no problem. I ended up finding a both types of guns. The S&W cost a lot more and would've expected to be steered to that. However I was shown both and they went over the features, benefits & condition (both were used) in detail. I was hesitant because of the price. They were understanding and after letting me handle both for a while and answering questions I said I wanted to think about it. No problem or attitude. I walked around and looked at some other stuff while debating with myself on should I spend the money. I decided to get the S&W 41. While doing the paperwork he overheard me talking with my friend about wanting an extra magazine. He explained that the don't usually carry them but would go check. Lo and behold he was talking with a coworker who had a few of his own. He got the coworker to sell me 2 which turned out to be cheaper than I could find online (pretty cool).
