We really enjoy visiting Oak Park and walking around McClatchy Park and then visiting some of our favorite businesses. Sometimes the park is taken over with events- big and small. If an area is reserved you'll see signs up for the timing. When there are bigger events the parking nearby tends to fill up, but when there aren't events you can usually find plenty of free parking nearby. The park has a basketball court, baseball field, tennis courts, picnic tables, disc golf, a skate park, a nice playground and even a pool. There are paved paths and there are multiple areas that are great for entertaining groups, including a stage area. They pack a lot into a relatively small area and while there's a lot to do it won't take you long to walk around. While we were walking around a family was having a party and plenty of people were utilizing the different areas for sports. There were also some people walking their dogs, like us, but some people had their dogs off leash in some of the bigger areas. There wasn't a dog park area. it was beautiful while we were there and everything was clean and well kept. read more

Wow, this has got to be one of the most underrated parks in all of Sacramento. They have so many things to do, for the young and old. There's an amazing playground, with areas for big kids and small kids, all themed after the amusement park that used to be here. There's also basketball, including a court for kids with a low net. There's a skate park, tennis, frisbee golf, and baseball too. And, they have a large lap pool, wading pool, and splash pad for the warmer months. All in all, this is an amazing park, especially for kids, but really for anyone! read more

It's a nice and large neighborhood park. Great children's playground and events such as the farmer's market. Sometimes, even recently, there can be loud events with expletive laden music which is not okay but happens. At times there have been also homeless present including near the playground. The park could always benefit from more enforcement. read more

Synonymous with Oak Park, this community park gets a bad rep but it's nice for a quick stroll. Lots of families come and use the playground, play pickle ball and the teens are throwing frisbees or doing tricks on their skateboard in the skate park. The lighting is terrible after dark but overall it's a nice place to go outside and take a quick break. read more

If I mention to a friend that I'm going to McClatchy Park, there is always an initial reaction of "THAT park?"True...it does have a reputation for being an unsavory place for homeless and undesirable characters, but I also like to find the good in things. And there is plenty of good to find in this spacious multi-purpose park that is a centerpiece to this old Sacramento neighborhood. Walk the park perimeter and you'll see what I'm talking about. A nicely maintained softball/baseball field, a great play area and structure for the kids, a basketball court, a pool, a tennis court, plenty of areas to picnic and a lot of colorful murals are all standout attractions. I like to walk her in the mornings, where I usually find locals utilizing all of the above. Sure, there are some vagrants and annoying loiterers bumping annoyingly loud music at 10 am from parked cars on the perimeter, but those cases are few and far between. Consider this one of many excellent park options in Sacramento for so many reasons. And consider it one of those many reasons that make Oak Park a great little neighborhood. read more

Visited the disc golf course. Normally not the type of disc golf course I find myself in but a nice little beginner course. The course is actually pretty wide open with most holes less than 300 feet and no real technical shots but it does have its own hazards. Being a busy active park, watching out for others is an important thing to keep in mind. A lot of people walking around are not paying attention and it is pretty easy for someone to walk in front of you and possibly get hit with a disc. Shots are all pretty straightforward but this constant awareness is a must at this park when playing disc golf. The other big thing we found ourselves using was the kids park. My kids were lukewarm on the disc golf but really enjoyed the playground. It was quite clean and in great shape with a variety of different activity for the kids to play with. This was probably the winner for the most part and it is definitely above average compared to most parks. This place also has a nice stage with a few murals set up and during our visit, there seemed to be a farmers market out here. While I don't see myself visiting for DG much, I'll likely take the kids out here for the playground again! read more

We had picked up some BBQ and came here to enjoy it. There were alot of people spread out in the park but it's also a very large park. The only discomfort we felt was when a local denizen scampered nearby and stared at us. He/she didn't utter a sound, just stared. Go away squirrel! I won't admit how long I've been a resident of Sacramento, as I am embarrassed I finally visit the lovely McClatchy Park. We were attending a socially distance, outdoor event and the park grounds were beautifully manicured, option of sunny or tree shaded areas to enjoy, and easily locatable garbage cans that were not overflowing. There were a variety of people enjoying the park: couples, families with children, adult with infant, people walking dogs, just a little bit of everything. My one regret I'm not being familiar with the park, is it would have been a perfect location for an outdoor lunch. When we return we will certainly pack lunch and games to enjoy the afternoon. read more

McClatchy Park AkA The Big Park has definitely come a long way. I LOVE that there has been a beautiful play structure added and a workout/gym area. I gave 3 out of 5 stars because while I was there for a family friendly event there was some not so family friendly activities happening (a fight and weed smoking). Because Oak Park is my hometown I would visit again, maybe earlier in the day though. read more

Yikes! Maybe it was the time of the day (3:00ish on a Saturday), maybe it was the side of the park that we were on, but "safe" was not a word I would use to describe the park. Near fights by people close by and less-than-desirables hanging about. There was a large group of us gathered for a tournament, so I definitely felt the whole safety in numbers thing. However, I would not want to be alone walking my dog through this park. No thank you. read more

McClatchy Park is right around the block from my house, and while I rarely venture into the core of the park, I run around it frequently. It's a beautiful public space, and once the weather perks up I hope to use it more. There are lots of big old trees, a nice playground, a stage, sports fields, etc. There are always people hanging out at the picnic tables in the park, and for the most part they seem friendly and non-sketchy (if they are dealing, they're non-aggressive, friendly dealers). There are also a lot of potential changes being made to the park, including a track, a community garden, and a skate park. I really like my local park, and I'm excited to see where it's going with the new redevelopment plan. read more

With less than a mile from our home we love to frequent this park with our dog in the mornings or evenings. The park is large, lush and green. Despite the questionable characters we have occasionally run into (people with dogs off leash, young kids who seem to be using the corners of the park for a smoke session) these occurances are few a far between. Truthfully, what park doesnt run into these problems? Police make their visits to the area and Ive always seen park staff onsite, so as a female I have always felt safe there. This park is a gem in the Oak Park area, we look forward to many more visits and while we haven't had a chance to attend the Oak Park farmer's market yet, we can't wait to. read more

Saturday morning farmer's market with organic vendors AND Dave's Pops (dairy free treats). Children's splash pad within the city limits. My kid was in HEAVEN. Big, clean play structure with different stuff than other parks in the city. Today there was a high school drum band practicing and they sounded amazing. My family loves this park when it is just the two of them playing on the equipment. Plus there is a skate park and frisbee golf. read more

This park is a place to play basketball at night. They have night lights till 10-11PM so its on all the time, that's why this park is cooL. Also, this park is a drug free zone, so if you see someone dealing, call the number listed... :). The parking is on the street and its suffice for the number of people. There is also a community center here, I haven't been there though. Man this is a nice park! I just wish people would clean up after themselves. This is a huge park with an amazing play area for kids, a skate park, frisbee golf course, tennis courts a seasonal community pool and lots of well maintained grass. #McClatchyPark is cool and an entertaining park for the kiddos! Kid-friendly park with two large playgrounds, one for 4 and under and the other for 5-12 year-olds. Three basketball courts: one full-size, one half court and an "Around The World" multi-height basketball game hoops. There's even an outside auditorium, baseball diamond, swimming pools, #DiscGolfCourse AND a #SkatePark! Our neighborhood park is amazing! The park is big, with lots of trees, a public pool, tennis courts, a softball field, a playground, basketball courts, a stage and public art pieces. We have Oak Park farmer's markets Saturday mornings, 9-12 pm, with free music and food vendors. We have a bike and skate park for the summer, donated by Terre Cox of College Cyclery. We have free monthly concerts in our park through September, thanks to Naked Coffee. There is a big transient population, that frequents the park, but I have never been hassled or had any altercations with other park visitors. read more

This is my local neighborhood park. Sure it's kinda ghetto, but it's wonderful. This park has basket ball courts, toys for the kids, soccer field, baseball diamond, tennis courts, public pool, amphitheater. Great big shade trees, lots of tables with BBQs. More and more events are happening at this park and it's exciting! With Oak Park becoming the new Midtown I'm sure we will see this gem get frequented a bit more...especially with the Oak Park Neighborhood Crop Swap coming this July!!! read more

Nice 9 hole disc golf course located in the park. Not too long but still fun. Course is actually well lit at night so that you can play in the winter hours from 5-8. Not the best area but to each his own I don't mind playing their and minding my own business and have fun read more

I often walk my dog at this park and it's pretty nice. Lovely large trees and there are random artistic stairs scattered over the green grass. It's a well-used park and there are usually families picnicking and kids running around. In the summer, there are lots of events - like a health fair and music concerts. And the park has a lot of features - an amphitheater, a pool, lots of vegetation and picnic tables. It's a pretty sweet park, actually. read more

Very cute! The splash pad is great! The carrousel horses are nice and fun for pictures, and it is an overall nice, clean park. Lots of trees which make for great shade for a picnic and the variation in structures is great for any age. read more

McClatchy Park Now has a 9 hole Disk Golf Course!! Never been to this park till they added the Course. Nice Shady Basic Layout. Altho playing all baskets some of the time during the day may prove somewhat difficult due to the locals hanging-out around baskets 7& 8. Remedy, Go Early, Before the locals starts to show up around 11:00am and have the park to your self......P.S. Eat breakfast before you go to this park as the heavenly fresh baked bread aroma from the bakery across the street will ruin your concentration and have you drooling..... :) read more

Rode by on my bike during the farmer's market there. The farmer's market didn't look like anything special but it did had some cool live latin music. For being in Oak Park this place is not that sketchy....I think the park is confused though, on one side of the park there were some "homies" smoking pot and on the other were 20-something yr. old girls doing yoga haha. Black women with white men should take note. Stupid black dudes will give you crap. The white people might refuse to acknowledge us but at least they don't make me feel threatened. They are jerks in their own right but it doesn't make my boyfriend want to avoid this park. I'll just stick to walking here with my mom and other parks with him. It sucks that stupid people ruin things like this for us. Other than that, I'm glad they added the trail so I can get my mother moving. And it looks so nice with all the things they added. But I think they should put a net or something around the basketball court. It's right by the street and parked cars. I don't think that was the smartest move. This park is absolutely beautiful, but Why does there NEVER seem to be enough parental supervision at this park? As of the moment of this posting, we are leaving the park because beyond the children cursing, smoking, and drinking, they started to squirt gun all of the slides.
