At one point we spent 5 hours negotiating on totally wrong numbers (put together by this firm) in several different aspects of the settlement. We both ended up with our own attorneys who each took about a minute to come up with correct maintenance and financial numbers. Both attorneys and a second mediator could not believe the incompetence displayed by The Divorce Resource Centre. They all thought that the DRC had no business charging us for the 5 hours wasted in rather intense negotiations among other things. In the end DRC was inflexible in resolving their charges in any way. At one point we need a copy of some information we had provided them and the owner told us we would be better off getting it somewhere else because she would charge us $225.00 per hour to find it and fax it. We spent way more money than necessary and wasted more even more valuable time using this service.

We sent him an email with several questions, and specified things we were not going to spend money pursuing. His email response was telling us to to do things we didn't want to do. He admitted he did not read our email before he responded but he now understood our concerns, though he billed us for it he response anyway. The second email from him listed several things that would have cost more than what the neighbor was asking us to pay them. Two useless emails that we were charged for. $1,000 completely wasted. When we questioned the charges, we were basically told - nothing was wrong just pay the bill.

Furthermore, she did nothing to actually mediate the claims instead I had to do her job even though each side paid her $275 a piece. We settled only because I kept coming up with different scenarios as she didn't do much of anything, but like I said take sides. The first suggestion is to do your homework when you take up a case, so that you know the issues in the case. The second suggestions is don't take up sides, but try to see it from both avenues as a true mediator. I have been through several court cases over the years and won them all, but this was so much of a waste of my time that if I knew that she would be unprepared and take sides that I would have called the parties myself and worked this out. My advice to others is use someone else for mediation because these people don't earn their money.
