This is a regular stop for a cup of coffee, which is always hot and prepared to order. At least one of the five stars I've given is for the fact that they always have fresh decaffeinated. The staff is friendly, if overwhelmed at times, and tends to have a positive attitude. There is always someone supervising and tidying the dining area. The drive-through service is so popular, the line never seems to shorten. Because inching along in an idling car does not appeal, I nearly always go inside and use the table service. After taking a seat, I log on to the free WiFi service, open the McDonald's app, enter my order, select the table-service option, enter the table number marked on a silver disk, and pay with my linked credit card. I read emails till a staffer brings the order directly to me. The table-service option appeals especially to those of us who'd prefer to forgo the ritual of hovering around the pickup window with other customers, waiting for our numbers to be called. The app also offers the option to park in a designated mobile-phone space near the entrance and have the staff bring your order outside to you. I can't comment on the meals, because I rarely come for more than a coffee break. But one bonus at this Scottish establishment is that a large coffee and pocket pie are half of what Starbuck's would charge for something similar. Thrifty, eh? Oh, and the people watching is better here, too. read more

After parking lot didn't allow us to go thru. We walked in. The hand sanitizer was empty. I had a special order so we had to wait for somebody to help us. I asked to use the bathroom to wash my hands. She would not give me the code instead of letting me inside didn't trust me I guess. Y'all hear about that time McDonald's tried to get in on the high end steakhouse market? Whew, it did not last long--big McSteak... I'm proud of how bad that is. Anyway, I can't say I've really frequented this location, but I haven't had any negative experiences. With fast food spots like this, that's basically the bar for me. That being said, it is probably the most sketchy of Hilo's McDonald's locations, purely based on the fact that it's in the middle of downtown. Rating-wise, I think this place probably does get an overly bad rap, though, just because most people only drop a review on them because they had a frustrating experience, but I think it's really just your run of the mill McDonalds'. If you don't mind the area and the potential for people coming up to your car while you're in the drive-thru line, I think this spot will get the job done. And isn't that all you can really ask for? Nobody's going to a McDonald's to have their socks knocked off by a fine dining experience. If you're in downtown Hilo and for some reason have a hankering for McDonald's, I would advise you to just go for it because it is in fact a McDonald's. Nothing more, nothing less. read more

Had to do two separate orders today 9/19/24. Reason being it was an inconvenience to have to go back to this establishment for a second time. So I didn't wanna deal with the drive thru!! So opt in to do a curbside pick up for some other stuff. And both times one thing was missing from order. I don't know if it was done intentionally or just forgotten. But to have it done to me twice in 1 day. Really gets someone thinking. What pissed me more off!! Is that with all the other workers in this establishment. Only had one lady doing curbside pick up!! First time going to this mc Donald's, and what a fail! I placed my order at 623pm on the app for curbside. I got my food around 640pm. I looked at my food and advised the boy that I was missing 2 medium fries. He said he would be back. Patiently, I wait. it's 645pm, it's raining so I wait a lottle longer and it's now 655pm. Fed up! Lately, I've been on a spree of eating egg white McMuffins because they are only $1 with a printable coupon so we all went to this McDonalds in Hilo for breakfast. During my visit on 5/27/2013, I asked for a water cup and was told that they don't have any water cups but they sold bottled water. When did that happen? I checked at the drinks area and there was water available. I should have spoken to a manager to confirm this but we were in a bit of a rush so I just drank my bottled water in the car after we left. I plan to follow up with a phone call. UPDATE: On 5/30/2013 at 2 pm, I called and spoke to the restaurant manager who informed me that Hilo McDonalds had discontinued giving free water cups because people were stealing soda, meaning they would ask for a water cup but take soda from the self-serve soda bar. Therefore, now they only sell bottled water. Wow! read more

Decided to go to McDonald's for the convenience and because the McTeri was available. For those who are unfamiliar, the McTeri is a quarter pounder, no cheese and with teriyaki sauce. It's a delicious burger, but it's pretty messy. First impressions of this place is the typical McDonalds. This location doesn't have a lot of parking and the traffic flows in one direction in the parking lot. The restaurant is fairly clean (even the bathroom). My suggestion is that you order with the app since most of the employees are busy packing orders than be at the register. There's no refills here (the machines are cordoned off). Got my order fairly quickly and the staff was ok. Would I come here again? Only if there's a special menu item. read more

Claire needs to work on her people skills, she first messed up our order through drive through, got to window told her we was missing our 40 piece nuggets, she asked for bag and receipt, she then told us we only got charged for 20 piece. We told her ok we'll just take 20 piece then. Drive 10 minutes away take everything out bag and we're missing our 20 piece nuggets. Now getting upset cause just trying to get a quick lunch for kids and our order got messed up twice. I have never written a review on Yelp. I don't expect absolute greatness from a McDonald's restaurant. But what I do expect is to be given the food I've ordered and paid for, after correcting the staff that they have taken the order wrong. My last FIVE visits, I have gotten an incorrect and CHEAPER order. A smaller box of nuggets, a Quarter Pounder when I have ordered a Double Quarter Pounder. I shouldn't have to be sitting in the Drive-Thru, going through the bags and opening boxes to make sure that the items are correct. I don't expect greatness. I expect SOME level of competence. Honestly ridiculous. If you eat here, make sure you check inside of your bag AND boxes and taste your drink BEFORE pulling away from the window. read more

I am acquainting you of an episode that challenged my confidence on February 01, 2019. The downtown Hilo McDonald's located on the island of Hawaii, is in walking distance to where I live. I do not know of his official status, probably manager at McDonald's, but his name is, John. Our engagement stems from my repeated complaints since 2017, and sadly, it continues. My YELP web-page @William K., Hilo, HI., attest to the ongoing issue, of no 2 drink cardboard boxed holders with handles of substance, for an easy carry (see my copied receipt of that day on the reverse of this letter). An effort was made shortly after I had filed a similar complaint with then, Vice Chairman & CEO, James Skinner of nearly a year ago. Previously, my 2 L Mocha Frappes were prepared in a papered bag where wet sides of the cup bleeds threads of watered beads through it, causing it to tear by the time I reach my house, whereto, I am too exhausted and upset for a return to them for an amended service. They effected the 2-cup cardboard holders from the back after my adamant persistence on this day, whereto, our exchange, caused John to be upset since I wasn't accepting papered bags for wet drinks. Surveillance cameras on that day should be very foreboding. Living independently, adopting changes to accommodate my person as of late. Physical barriers test my abilities, a fact that was repeatedly stated prior to the completion of my order. It is difficult to maintain a sense of decency in the face of professional lacking behind the workplace via chain-of-command. (My thoughts were added and not part of the letter for John's nonchalant attitude and that the world circles around him. John is still working there now into the third year of the same occurrence, WHY?!!! Seemingly, he does not care for the handicapped & seniors--something needs to be done with those who think that wet drinks in papered bags--NEVER BREAKS?!!! So what if it does?!!! Just hippity-hoppity back to Mickey D's, with your cane, walker, or wheelchair--that is, IF they believe you?) Normally, I would not bother to write a review for a national fast food chain restaurant. With that being said, this review will not reflect any of its serving, food quality, cleanliness or price as I find this particular Mcdonalds to meet the same standard as any other Mcdonalds in the world. This Mcdonalds however, has a few unique features that set it aside from any other Mcdonalds I have experienced on the Big Island. The Drive thru. Frankly its proof that people in Hawaii have no idea how to merge. They have this split lane that opens up into 2 ordering booths where 2 cars can order at once. Its a novel idea and I'm sure it speeds up the ordering process for the workers. But it is not safe to say the least. If the line were to split completely into two lines where cars that have finished ordering would go to two separate windows id feel it would be adequately safe but that's not how this works. You have two ordering speakers then it merges back into the same lane forcing motorists to merge. This is a hazard. If you have ever lived in HPP you know for a fact that Hawaii drivers are notoriously dim witted when it comes to merging into one lane. That aside, I notice the car in front of me nearly collide with another car at the other speaker. Its not just the fact that Hawaii drivers don't merge well, the merge is littered with the menus and its difficult to see if a car is coming. Knowing this and seeing the cars nearly bump in front of me i was cautious. I still nearly hit the other car in the outside lane as we both could not see each other. till we were near the merge. Another complaint I have about the drive thru is that it completely wraps around the entire building making it dangerous for pedestrians. The pedestrian entrance is only about 5 yards from the end window of the drive thru. A pedestrian must turn a blind corner into a crossing at the risk of getting run down by vehicles exiting the drive thru. Its probably one of the poorest designs ive ever seen in a drive thru. This includes a Taco Bell ive seen in Oahu where you need to get your food through the passenger window. At least there you needn't merge into a single lane or worry about running over pedestrians. The most appalling detail of it all is that this Mcdonalds was built from the ground up. They took down the old Western Auto Building and re-built the new structure that is now Kinoole McDonalds. Could they not have planned the drive thru better? Perhaps i should also write a review on the contracting company that designed the drive thru and put the pedestrian crossing right near the exit window? Its just dumb when you think about it. The flooring. Yes i have a problem with the flooring on both the inside of the store and outside. Its this slick tiling they use. Its not just this Mcdonalds its pretty much every Mcdonalds in Hilo. I don't understand why they use this slick when wet tiling in a place where it rains 60% of the time. Ive fallen countless times at every single Mcdonalds this side of the island. I aint no lame duck or some uncoordinated flop either. I surf nearly everday and work at a physically intensive job. The sad thing is that they know it. I always see those familiar yellow signs outside as if they will prevent me from falling. read more

Homeless people loiter/sleep at this location. Some cashiers barely speak English. The staff became snide when they messed up my order too. Last night a ordered a small water and a double cheese burger. Then they make me a single cheeseburger, put a small coke on my ticket, and completely forget to give me a cup. Protip guys, if you don't have the thing someone orders, it is not okay to substitute a more expensive item instead. At least they offered to refund the coke, which I turned down because I still needed something to drink... Which I didn't end up getting. Anyway, I could see them making a single, so I tell them I wanted a double. The cashier snapped "well, why didn't you say that?" to which I respond by showing her my receipt, where I ordered I double moments before. The staff then gives me the double and begins arguing amongst themselves, as though I've completely disappeared. I did not want to let the situation stress me further, so I left. These food handlers could not give one fuck less, and that is scary. Do yourself a favor and eat at one of the many small resteraunts within a blocks distance.
