I have nothing but good things to say about McFarland clinic and Mary Greeley hospital. My family has had more than our share of events requiring services, and the place always seems to run like a well oiled machine. Specialist referrals, labs, radiology...quickly and smoothly coordinated by our primary care docs. In the few cases where they have fallen a little short, I recognize that the patients have some culpability in the matter. For instance, a young friend of my close acquaintance had knee surgery and the bandage was very tight and hence very uncomfortable. However, she did not contact the nurse to ask her something could've been done. They can't fix what they don't know about. (Four weeks later the same surgeon can essentially the same surgery on my knee and I had no difficulty at all.) One other bobble was related to a course of pulmonary rehab ordered for my husband... they were supposed to call, but didn't. That's on them. He should have called to inquire...and he didn't. That's on him. It's a health partnership, not a full service spa. For complaints about 20 minute waits....that's what the magazines are for. Just read, nap, or play solitaire on your phone. You would wait longer than that for a table at a restaurant. read more

I received EXCELLENT care from Dr Betsey Bean and the rest of the staff at McFarland. Dr Bean thoroughly informed me and was patient when I had questions regarding my surgery. Surgery went very smoothly and I am happy with the recovery. I highly recommend her. read more

I have found that the DPT booster I received from my PCP at McFarland Clinic is covered by Medicare Part D but not covered by McFarland Clinic. I believe patients needing a immunization booster (measles, tetnus, etc) need to know they will be paying the entire amount for the booster 9and it is expensive due to cost shifting). The shot would be covered at a pharmacy with a Rx called to the pharmacy by the physician. Because I was not informed of this policy, I had to pay out-of-pocket for something that is covered by my Medicare supp. insurance. It would have been better for me to get this at my pharmacy. All patients need to know this information ahead of time. read more

I moved to Ames 20 years ago and although there are good doctors at MC Farland clinic, there are an equal number of doctors I would never recommend. A small city the size of Ames should have a top grade medical community but unfortunately, it doesn't. People like me have to drive to Des Moines or even Mayo clinic to get the quality of treatment we need. Its possible that the long term leadership of this clinic is more concerned with money rather than people. "Do no harm" the Hippocratic oath isn't dependable here with too many docs....not all but too many. read more

I have used many different doctors here and many different specialties. Each time I've gone back it seems like it's worse than the last time. I am almost impressed they can be this useless. I'm sure they can help with a broken bone, like when I fix a lego thing that got broken for my kids. If you have anything more complicated than that, you will not get any progress. I had some better results with Mercy one, or driving 3 hours to Harlan, IA. Don't trust the testimonials, I left a negative one once, and they never let me leave another one. If this place had to run like a real business, it would have failed long ago. read more

Unfortunately McFarland is the only option in Ames, which is why I'm changing providers and will see someone elsewhere. With the exception of the radiology department, I have had nearly nothing but awful and disrespectful treatment especially from whoever answers the OB/GYN department phone. Their rules are atrocious. If a relative has an outstanding bill, then no one in the family can see a doctor. They degrade Medicaid patients, and are rude to women who call about information accessing an abortion. If you have the time and money, go to Nevada, Ankeny, or Des Moines for care. read more

Geniluinly terrible. I wish there were more options in ames. McFarland clinics are greedy and do not care about the health of anybody. Unless you have money for them in my opinion they could careless if you die on thier door step. I owe a 150. Bill i have had multiple medical emergencies since being in ames and am also chronicly ill with 3 auto immune diseases. They dont not care and have refused to treat me unless i have money in hand. My husband had an appointment with Dr. Timothy Hansen at noon for squamous cell carcinoma on his hand. Unfortunately for us, Dr. Hansen had another patient ahead of us who took much more time than anticipated. But good for that patient because Dr. Hansen took the time necessary to do a complete and satisfactory job. We got in two and a half hours later but that's ok with us because we would want the same treatment if we needed it. Dr. Hansen and his nurses were very professional, courteous, and personable and we feel my husband got the care he needed. I would recommend Dr. Hansen to anyone who needs Mohs surgery. read more

It is very difficult to schedule appointments. The clinic promotes their online scheduling but many doctors aren't included in this feature. Office hours are from 8-5. For someone like me with busy work and school calendars, scheduling is less accessible. I wish more online scheduling was available and the hours to make appointments would be extended. read more

This fucking place sucks they make u wait for everything i had a bad ig that wasn't even in my vein causing pain, i asked to get it out its been over an hour. Ordered food and nothing came until two hours later just to ge left on a table literally across the room. I'm in pain can barely move like use your f*ckinng brains! Another time i came got stuff checked in and said i wanted to leave i left and got charged 800$. Excellent Clinic and Hospital/staff I can't say enough good about McFarland clinic and my latest experience there with Dr. Darry Johnson and his Nurse. I had my hysterectomy in March 2023. He's a very attentive/caring Doctor, and he's very knowledgeable and attentive. He does not rush the appointments, and he consistently has a smile on his face! I was informed about everything that would be done during surgery, and why it needed to be done. He's made me feel completely at ease, and comfortable with his expert decisions in my care. His nurse is just super awesome as well! She also was in on the surgery, and stood by my side and held my hand until they put me to sleep. As far as I'm concerned McFarland clinic in Ames, Iowa hit the jackpot when they got this wonderful doctor on their team! I believe he will be a great asset to them. Rad onc changed treatment plan and I didn't find out about it until after my first treatment. When I asked him why he told me, that him and "the team" had decided that 5 treatments would work for me and "I could give you the 10 treatments, it would just put more money in my pocket." EENT rolled her eyes and was snarky and bitchy. Billing department...Asked about a significant charge for a day when I didn't even have an appt. She told me, "The charge is there and I can't remove it!" and hung up on me. Even when you give them a bad review in the after appointment survey, they don't care or do anything about it. McFarland Clinic should become private, that way they can pick and choose the patients they accept to see! read more

My Primary Care Physician suggested I go back to GI at McFarland. I just saw Dr. Fields a couple weeks ago. He took about 2 minutes to talk to me. He didn't ask enough questions to find out why I was there, told me that [what my regular doctor believed] was a myth and that her recommendation was not the solution. No explanations--just in and out as fast as he could go. When I called for an appointment with one of the other GIs, I was refused by both of them--even though I had previously been a patient of one of them for many years (Dr. Thomas Johnson). According to them, they are just too busy until they get another doctor into the section. I had surgery 2.5 years ago and now have no one to follow up with. DO NOT COUNT ON THESE DOCTORS TO GET YOU IN WHEN YOU NEED CARE! They did not even offer a referral. I also wish I could leave a negative number of stars. McFarland needs an overhaul. . . read more

Told us to go to different doctor when trying to book an appointment! Daughter is at Iowa State. Saw our GP when home for the holidays and he recommended seeing a dermatologist. When calling for an appointment, they wouldn't book and told her to call the other doctors in Ames. Wow! What kind of service is that?? Wouldn't even discuss an appointment. Here is McFarland Clinic: 1. 6 months wait to change doctors. 2. Only one surgeon doing hip replacements, scheduling months away. 3. No cardiologist on call for weekends. 4. No rheumatologists. 5. No psychiatrists. They drag their feet on diagnosing and treatment. My wife has had a bad back for 7 1/2 weeks now, and they still haven't gotten around to really looking at it. Years ago, I would have said medical care in Ames was excellent. Not any more. Now that McFarland has driven all the other clinics away, there's no place else to go. "Extraordinary Care, Every Day" is their slogan. What a joke. read more

As a registered nurse for over 11 years I can say this is among the worst medical care I have ever seen. I cannot speak to the other providers in the clinic, but Amy Hawthorne, PA-C needs to either be reeducated, or take a very long vacation to get her give a damn back. My son who has lost massive amounts of weight in the past 4 months without trying, who is lethargic, who is unable to think clearly, or function normally shows up and she runs a CBC and thyroid panel. Seriously? No CMP, no UA....basic labs. Standard medical care is at least checking basic labs...basic. This is gross and I would seriously think twice about going to this person who not only did a very poor job, but made my kid feel bad while she did it. She didn't have compassion, concern, and didn't do her job. read more

The employees working the phones don't know which locations can provide which services, so you might spend an hour on the phone trying to get something figured out that competent staff could have completed in 5 minutes. McFarland is really the only choice in the Ames area which is a shame because they can't figure it out. read more

We are so disappointed and totally frustrated with the "mask optional" practiced by most receptionists, nurses, et al. When we made an appointment for our third booster shots (noting that COVID is on the rise), we were instructed to wear masks--we always do where ever we go and whenever we go--so that was not a problem. At the receptionist area, the lady who checked us in had a mask on her neck (to keep it warm?) but in Adult Medicine all receptionists and nurses did not wear masks, coughed like they had a very bad cold, and laughed when we asked them to put a mask on. I am 77, and my spouse is 57, and we discussed it discovering we were both terrified (I have numerous comorbidities including an enlarged heart). We will never go to McFarland Clinic and are looking for another doctor not affiliated with this business. We drive to Iowa City Hospitals and clinics for my heart and health even though it is 3 hours away--but at least they enforce the rule to wear masks. No one should ever go to McFarland clinic or Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, as they make a mockery of the seriousness of COVID and do not deserve the distinction of being health conscious or a health center. For shame on McFarland Clinic for being so cavalier and careless with people's lives. read more

I have probably been told by someone not to do this, but reading these reviews is distressing. I am a surgeon at this clinic and work with amazing physicians and staff. Kind, dedicated, selfless people who come to work every day with the intent to ease pain and increase joy in health. We have a patient relations department that would love to hear these types of concerns so that we can all improve. After I broke my ankle in 3 places my small town hospital asked me where I wanted to go for my surgery. I said definitely McFarland Clinic. They were fabulous and so caring from the initial ER visit, then quickly into surgery. My stay introduced me to some wonderful nurses. My ankle is now perfect, in fact it is better then my other one. I recommend McFarland to anyone. read more

Not cool to have to wait close to an hour in the exam room. Not good customer service. Call me when you're almost ready. Wait time in exam room should not be more than 10 minutes. This has happened to me several times and it is uncomfortable. In one instance I could hear the doctor in the hall having personal conversations right outside the exam room. In any event, bottom line....wait time in the exam room should not be more than 10 minutes unless an emergency comes up. read more

I have always had quality healthcare here. The staff is caring and professional. I know I am in good hands at McFarland Clinic.

McFarland misbilled my mother's account by $80. She was charged $80 more than what should have been billed for services for non-hodgkins cancer treatment. My mother aquired Co-V2 virus after she completed the maintenace portion of her care (her cancer doctor never told her to wear a mask after her cancer treatments ended according to her discharge instructions) and she acquired Co-V2 virus after having cateract surgery following her last cancer treatment. The billing office did not offer condolences upon learning of my mother's passing, nor did they offer to cut a check for the $80 they over billed. Her daughter is having to ask for reimbursement for the $80 over charge from VISA. Such a shameful attitude from the billing office. The billing representative acted snarky and it WAS their ERROR in medical coding and/or billing. Exercise caution getting services provided here. It's the money they care about--not the patient nor their surviving family members! Patients be wary...be an advocate for yourself and others. read more

i went in for a hernia operation. after getting prep'd i waited for 2 1/2 hours to be rolled into the operating room. I'm not all that upset about that, i can live with that. i was sent home with a prescription for 5mg vicodin every 4 hours!!! i have literally left the dentist with the same prescription... they either want me to be in pain or they don't know what they are doing.... i called and talked to doctor n was told to put heat on it.. God forbid i need another surgery, i won't go here AND i will talk pain management b4 i decide to go somewhere... its 2015, there is no need to be in pain... read more

I have lived in DC, Tucson, LA and various smaller cities for most of my adult life and have never recieved as bad treatment as I have at Mc Farland. I was also forgotten in the ER room at Mary Greely for 20 minutes when I had my first UTI.Extremely painful. Drive. There are better docs in Neveda or Huxley. Nevada associated with Mercy. Huxley with Methodist. Boone is associated with McFarland as is Story City. read more

The doctors, nurses and office staff are the best. I have resided in many different cities across the country and have considered myself best to have McFarland for my health care. Of course, you may be delayed if the doctor has an emergency at Mary Greeley or a patient that needs immediate care. What is a few minutes to get the best care. The nurses at the Duff Lab are patient and take the time to explain everything. New appointments are handled professionally and promptly. Great Doctors for your health needs. read more

I've never felt so unwelcome in my life. When arriving to check in at the Ames clinic, the receptionist was short with me and didn't help me at all. I had never been to this clinic before, so I didn't know where to go and when I asked for help I was treated like I was stupid. After getting labwork done here, no one told me what I was supposed to do or where I was supposed to go. Finally, after asking a receptionist, I was told I needed to drive across town to go to the other clinic for my appointment. After getting lab work done at my regular appointment, I wasn't given any medical advice to help me with my situation, I was only told I would get results by the end of the day and no one ever called me back. I called multiple times and every time the receptionist told me the nurse was too busy and that she would call me back, and she never did. After calling back the next day, the nurse was rude and told me that I wouldn't get test results back for another week and that I just needed to wait. Last time I checked it wasn't supposed to take a week to find out if you have a UTI or not??? read more

I am in my 3rd Trimester with my first child. I was told to wait until the 3rd Trimester to sign up for classes, all classes before my due date are now either full or registration has closed. I have enjoyed the midwives, but the rest of the McFarland OB/GYN staff has been almost no help throughout my pregnancy. I put my trust in the ultrasound professionals, nurses, and receptionists because I don't really have a choice, they have routinely treated me very poorly. It's like McFarland is the hospital equivalent of Mediacom. read more

Absolutely terrible, I went in with a 104 degree fever, waited a hour and half for them to give me ibuprofen, and then got charged for $500. I will never go back. I got my bill statement six months later and when I called to ask questions they were rude and unhelpful. They would not even send me a breakdown of my cost. She was quite rude - almost made me cry. As I've only been in this position about a month, I am still learning, and don't appreciate being treated like I am an idiot. I've lived in Ames over ten years and have gone to Mc Farland only a hand full of times, based on the poor quality being the only thing consistant opting to instead drive to Ankeny for better experience. Due to only needing a prescription written and being short on time I scheduled an appointment here. I paid the 25 co pay at check in and got into the exam room quickly. I was left there for about 20 minutes, annoying but I get it that healthcare is busy. SO the doctor comes in and is like so all you you need is a prescription, where do you want me to send it? Then he figured out I hadn't taken it before and was like, oh. I'm not familar with this one so I better refer you to a specialist, also better get lab work done. The doctor looked really dumb having bed head and dirty sneakers, if he worked at the supermarket as a clerk he would prolly be sent home to shower and change, and they allow a doctor to represent the clinic like this?. So I was with him face to face for all of about 5 minutes. I see they billed insurance about $150 for the visit, insurance for whatever reason only paid about 3 bucks, got me a discount, had no record of the 25 I had paid already and told me to pay about 35 more. Also what happened to the labs? Been over a month, have never seen a bill nor results of these. Oh and the specialist needed to schedule pretty far out. Ended up wasting time and money here, and going to des moines to spend less, and get better and fast service. The doctor himself in des moines even called 2 days later to say the blood work shows I am super healthy and he is sending the prescription over as we speak. Mcfarland would probalby say they show no record of the visit, have me come back and bill me again.....end of rant #nomoremcfarland read more
