I ordered 4 yards of bark and 4 yards of soil and expected there to be a delivery charge, however they delivered both at the same time and charged me $110 for each product. Although they gave me a discount of $30 dollars. the total delivery was $190. I was not told how much the delivery would cost when I placed the order. If I had been I would not have accepted. When I called to complain they said "This is the way we've always done it". No apology. There are plenty of places in town that have great products. I will never go back to McFarlane's. read more

Phoned them on Saturday Memorial Day weekend, a weekend I'm sure they were very busy! I am not a "gardner" (I'm a novice) but I spoke with Laurie, and she was absolutely wonderful, answering the questions I had about soil and bark dust. She could've been short with me because I was asking really basic questions, but instead, she answered my questions (with care) and told me I could also go to their website, as well, to estimate how much soil/dirt I would need for our yard projects. She also mentioned the best technique to use to measure our flower beds and use the website's calculating tool. I really appreciated her kindness and helpfulness! She even lamented being short staffed this weekend and apologizing they were a week out to be able to deliver product to our home! Once again, she did not make me feel rushed as I spoke to her, even though she mentioned they were shorthanded this weekend!. I got the basic information I needed very quickly and was off the phone in less time than I expected. I'm certain I will do business with McFarlane's when I order "product", because not only are they close to where I live, but they were incredibly nice and helpful on the phone. They changed their yard debris system to yardage / size instead of weight. It doubled my typical dump cost, and the new "park inline, measure, and prepay system" is inefficient and wont scale when it gets busy. Not sure why they broke a good thing. read more

I appreciate and take advantage of their senior discount - especially in these increasingly Very difficult financial times. For as long as I can remember the prices and subsequent price hikes at MB Were more than reasonable - but now those days appear to be a thing of the past. MB no longer uses a scale but instead measures 'trailer size' to determine disposal cost(s) = the price Doubled (from $16 to $30) for a smaller than usual load! I understand raising the prices of the products they sell (mulch / bark / et al) but raising the prices of the 'main source' of their products (our yard debris) is Unconscionable! I'm not the only senior citizen who feels this way. For most of us: MB is the only way to affordably clean-up our properties, so now we have no recourse but to pay up and up and up and... Been going here for years and have had many rude interactions. i went there yesterday to dump a small load of leaves from the street in front of my house and got told that i couldnt dump it because there was some small bits of trash in it like what looked a small piece of a candy wrapper and some small pieces of cardboard that i tried to pick out. they told me very rudely that I could just go to Metro because obviously my load was too full of trash to take. So i went to Metro. They were a lot friendlier and cheaper! 34 dollars for a load under 240 pounds and they did not care that there were a few tiny bits of debris in there. read more

The cedar chips are not cedar but dumping is a fair price and they are nice. I often come here when I need to dump yard waste and I know it's not heavy material. They go by weight so it really depends on what you have. 3.5 - 4 star read more

McFarlane's is quite honestly the best place for the disposal large timber in the greater Portland metro area PERIOD. As an arborist servicing servicing the area, my team and I have struggled with large wood disposal. Our vehicles/ trailer combinations are often too long to fit on the scales. Other businesses seem to have incompetent training when it comes to CONSISTENTLY estimating loads, without using their scale. The variation of price I have encountered for similar sized loads does not inspire confidence. The employees at McFarlane's are quick to hustle out, tape measure in hand and their numbers are always consistent visit to visit. I've been using McFarlane's for years for our annual compost delivery. No more. The driver, Marvin, had clear instructions to call my number upon arrival so I could meet him upstairs. Instead, he stewed for what he said was "15 minutes" and then was incredibly rude when he finally figured out to call me at the number in his notes, at which point I was upstairs within a minute. McFarlane is a commercial yard debris recycler, composter, soil and mulch supplier. My landscaper knew them so we went to get a yard or two dumped in the truck. They change locations based on the most cost effective land they can find. Oregon and Washington. Yes big purchases will stress your truck suspension. Most pickup beds are 1-sub2 cubic yards, depending on weight. They accept yard debris for a price with a $10 minimum by volume or weight, then compost it and sell it. So landscapers love them, drop off and pick up. Saves petrol. Not consumer customer service oriented - pull over here and we'll dump in your truck. Drive here, not there, dump here. If you are looking for the yard debris and compost equivalent of Nordstroms, forget it. Go to Portland Nursery, whom I love and recommend! Real world. Haven't used their delivery. This place is great! I went several times on Memorial Day weekend. They were very busy, but of the 3 times I went (both with recycling and to buy mulch), they were really fast get you in and out. Now with covid- all you do is pull up, call and pay via phone, and then fill your truck up. I never waited more than a few minutes for them to fill the truck. Now I can tell you that it is thoroughly unpleasant. This is not the kind of consumer experience where I particularly care about service, and frankly, neither do they. I have used their bark for years. No complaints here. I used the 3 in 1 topsoil for planter boxes but last time they recommended something else. Dirt got hard as a rock. About 3 weeks ago, my husband and I ordered 5 yards of McFarlane's Dark Hemlock Mulch that was delivered the next day. We carefully spread the mulch in 1 inch layering on top of landscaping fabric. At about 8:00am on Saturday morning my husband came home and noticed smoke coming up from our side yard. The ground where the mulch was spread and our fence were up in flames! The fire department came and we were told that the mulch was the cause of the fire. This was not because the weather was hot that week as it was of 65º-79º F. Mulch goes through a process of decomposition and is supposed to be regulated and considered safe in regards to combustion by the time it is delivered to the consumer. We were mortified. What if we had not come home that morning? Our entire home could have burned to the ground. When we spoke to Kathleen McFarlane, one of the owners of McFarlane's Bark, she was rude and we were immediately dismissed and told that it was not their responsibility. She sounded like she was reading from a script. McFarlane's website states "As it is our objective to continually raise the standard of our products we have been submitting our compost products for testing since 1993. In meeting the required monthly testing parameters that have been set by the U.S. Composting Council, we maintain the "Seal of Testing Assurance"." After inquiring about the temperature readings and testings of their mulch piles (required monthly testing parameters and "Seal of Testing Assurance"), including the one that was delivered to our home, Ms. McFarlane stated "umm no, we don't take the temperature of our mulch piles", and proceeded to recite her previous statement in that it was not their responsibility. Composting Facilities are required, by law, to regulate the temperature of compost piles that must meet a standard in order to then sell it the consumer. Pursuant to WAC 173-350-220(4)(vii)(B), ..."The temperature of the active compost pile must be maintained at fifty-five degrees Celsius (one hundred thirty-one degrees Fahrenheit) or higher for three consecutive days (seventy-two hours.." We were shocked by this woman's statement, let alone the unprofessional-ism and immediate dis-concern from one of the business owners herself towards a clients concerns. Why is this company still operating when they are clearly selling the consumer an inferior product and yet they misrepresent on their website that they persevere in their obligation to produce safe, uniform and superior products. When in reality, once they receive your money, any issues that may arise are simply "not their responsibility" and you're treated like they don't care about the customer or that there was a concern with their product. We are not trying to be petty or rude with this review, just truthful and maybe if we had read a review like this prior to doing business with this company, we would have been spared from this horrible experience. If you have any regard for customer service, professionalism or fire prevention, I would highly recommend that you do not do business with this company. read more

Been doing landscape for almost 10 years now in the portland area. So I've dealt with different landscape supply places such Best Buy in town, S&H Landscape supply and now McFarlane's. This place is definitely the most expensive with the lowest quality product. Their prices are way above anywhere else even at their commercial rates. Example. 1 yd of brown hemlock is 44 here, 34 at Best Buy, and 31 at S&H. And the quality, well let me just say that I had to apologize to my client for bringing what look almost looked like bark chips. There customer service sucks. I order from them two time's big load with workers waiting to spread bark dust all around the property. They left us hanging, never showed up. I had to reschedule all my workers and had to pay them for coming to work for those 2 hours. When they did show up on a later day, they gave me the wrong material and didn't even care enough to say sorry. I asked to speak to a supervisor but there isn't any since there family own. I will never use them again. I will make sure people know what kind of horrible service they have. I'm really disappointed!! Garden soil! We did tons of work - dug out old soil in our garden down to 1' & then added 2 feet of new soil from McFarlanes. Supposedly great soil w/dirt, compost & river sand. It is a DISASTER. It is super heavy, hard to dig into, it is hard & sort of sets like concrete. We've had to dig in bag after bag of peet moss to break it down. The girl at the office said it is what they always sell & people are really happy with it. It might work for some situations, but DEFINITELY NOT garden soil. We thought we dealt with one problem and ended up with another massive problem. Check very carefully before you buy. Don't just order over the phone! Go, see, handle etc first! read more

My second time ordering from McFarlane, and my 2nd disappointment and annoyance. I ordered 1/4 minus crushed gravel and delivered was 1/2-1/4 - big difference. I did not receive a confirmation of my phone order, which might have avoided the entire stress, but there is no confirmation. I was told my credit card would be run after the delivery was dumped, and it was indeed run in the morning after my notification of the delivery time window between Noon and 2PM. The driver showed up after 3PM, with no heads-up from the dispatcher who I contacted before 3 to find out where my delivery might be. I was told that the driver is close and would be there in a few minutes, which he was. He was very nice and helpful, and had me sign the delivery slip before I even saw the product. After the truck door was opened I saw immediately that the gravel was not what i ordered, and he kept the receipt saying that it needs to go back to the office, with the wrong product. I was told by the office that they'd call me to make new arrangements for a new time and correct product drop-off. It is now almost Noon the next day and I called to find out what is going on, and also see the charge on my credit card - and I don't even have a receipt!! The lady at the office was not there yesterday and only sees a 'customer cancelled and refused order' note on my account. This business transaction had so many hiccups, I can only caution to order anything from this place. The order process itself took very long, and looking back, I am not surprised that the lady who took my order wrote down wrong gravel dimensions. Nice but not very business driven, and not on top of their products and what they are usually used for. I hope to have my charge taken off of my credit card statement and order from one of the many other companies in town who offer same products. At about 3pm Mrs McFarlane called me back to find out what is going on and rudely hung up when I explained the information that I have received about when the credit card would be run. Really? The business owner hangs up on a client after she and her staff messed up? Wow. And now looking at other Yelp reviews, I think that I do have a point and am not exaggerating about the service received. read more

Do not use McFarland Bark if you want to deal with a reputable company. I called for bark delivery.and I was told I was the only delivery scheduled for that day at the time I ordered the bark. When I was called with my delivery time at 8:25am, the day of the supposed delivery, I was told between 1-3pm. That was not the case. When I called after 3pm to see when my delivery would arrive, I was told another half hour or so. BTW: I live 10 minutes away from McFarland Bark. Unacceptable when a person is spending hundreds of dollars, had a work crew waiting for the delivery and to top it off, rude customer service. I was appalled. read more

We needed a yard of cedar chips and we didn't want to have it delivered as the cost of delivery was higher than the yard of woodchips. The nice people at MacFarlane's Johnson Rd. location suggested that we could buy their bags and bag it ourselves then we could transport it in our vehicle. This worked out perfectly! I wish I would have read the yelp reviews before using McFarlane's Bark. The product is fine, but the customer service is scandalously rude. The woman that took my order and credit card number was quite nice and assured me that I would be receiving the product "first thing"on the accorded morning, so that I could coordinate with the crew. I had to call the dispatcher in the morning, since they failed to do so on their own, and I was then given a later time frame, 11 am. However, the product arrived at my location at 12:30 pm. When I requested for them to extend to me a professional discount to compensate me for all additional the labor costs that I had incurred, I was told that "we don't do anything like that". When I asked the staff person to refer my dissatisfaction to the owner, I was told with attitude, "OK, I'll tell my mother". Wow. read more
