Some good, some not so good deals. Some things priced higher than at the actual store it came from (for example Great Value brand spices from Walmart they sell cheaper at Walmart than here). Some items are expired so if that bothers you, don't waste your time. The place was packed to the brim, I could've spent a couple of hours walking around. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Some items are priced more the retail store so it is best to do your research prior to going. Other then that it is a discount grocery store so some items are damaged like dented cans or off season like Christmas pretzels in July. But it doesn't hurt the quality of the stuff. read more

Great liquidator of all kinds of supermarket items. Yup, watch those Buy By Dates . Much is past it so check labels. I have a list for protein and granola bars, drinks, juices, fancy groceries, candy, coffee, tea, frozen stuff, cat food, cheeses, snacks, condiments and surprises too. It is the luck of the draw I go there at least once a month for highly discounted items. I have seldom gotten anything this happy mama could not eat. AVOID AT ALL COST!!! TERRIBLE STORE I sadly give this place the benefit of the doubt that it might not be quite as bad as several of the reviews that I have read about it and was terribly mistaken. I made the trip all the way across town in hopes that is would be something like I used to really appreciate about Grocery Outlet on Speedway that I had the pleasure of many great deals and pretty friendly staff. I arrived Wednesday September 9th at 10 AM and despite the door not opening properly, not unreasonable for my previous experiences at similar stores but the big bright "Open" sign illuminated in the window I noticed from the corner. The girl inside informed me they weren't open yet so I walked right back out. The "bouncer" stormed to the door to tell me I would not be allowed in and "GO"! I have five kids which means I know a lot about discount grocery outlets. When we lived in Pennsylvania we visited a local one twice a week. It was a great way to save money on are already expensive grocery bill. We stopped into McGarys last and left empty handed. EVERYTHING was expired. Everything. Some two years past their sell by date. I am very familiar with how discount grocery outlets work. I know that they get items from stores that are are very close to their sell by date, as well as scratch and dent items- but this place was just gross. Did I mention the store employee who was open carrying with an unsecured, id be willing to bet loaded- firearm? I was so excited to go here... I don't mind labels printed upside down and boxes with dings and scratches. But i do mind when the food is over 6 months past the "best by:" date. I guess legally you get around still selling it because it's just best before that date. I LOVE a good deal, and there are LOTS of them at McGarys. We read labels and we check dates, and we know which products are likely to taste-shift past the best-buy date. Because we're careful shoppers, we've had great luck with a variety of products, especially with things like luxury chocolates (well, for me, Brookside is outside my budget at a regular store, but I love the Dark Chocolate Pomegranate flavor) and recently-past-date chips. They've had a decent selection of gluten free stuff, too, and cereal at $5. for 3 boxes is great, especially when the brands are mainline and pricey ones like Kashi, Cherrios, etc. We're not tea or coffee drinkers, but I've seen Starbucks flavors and other exotic brews all at discounted prices, and they even have the $1. container of mini dried marshmallows that are so great in cocoa and on ice cream. We've been shopping there for just under a year, and the staff (I think most are family?) has always been kind and friendly. We're just so grateful that between McGary's, dollar discount places and thrift stores, we do ok on a fixed income and can even splurge on the occasional bag of Brookside chocolates or mini marshmallows. I've lived on the south west side of Tucson my whole live I never new about Mc Gary's untill just recently I moved down down the street, I'm so glad I found this place! I have really saved alot of money on groceries shopping here, I'm always surprised with the total $ amount after I buy bags of food. They also have makeup here I've bought so many lipsticks for $2 - $3 when at other retail stores they cost around $9 each. I never had any complaints about the stuff I have bought. I love this place! You need to know what you're getting into, and you need to be the kind of person who will love this place. McGary's sells expired and/or discontinued and/or otherwise discount products. Do you like getting a great deal on something in a strip mall in a kinda sketchy part of town? Head on over to McGary's. It's hard to explain the greatness that is McGary's. First off, yes, they DO sell expired food products. They have signs up that explain (and this is me paraphrasing what I remember from when I have shopped there, so do not take this as legal advice or the exact advice that McGary's offers) that many food products have expiration dates that are based on either governmental regulations as to when food is "best by", or product manufacturers' guidelines as to when their food TASTES best. You can ruminate on that for as long as you like, or watch one of many documentaries about food politics in this country, or...just move on to the rest of my review of McGary's! McGary's sells expired food products, or food products that have changed their labeling, or food products that...for whatever reason are no longer deemed to be saleable by conventional retail outlets. They also sell non-food products in the same ilk: Cosmetics, small electronics, vitamins and supplements, and more. I spoke to a cashier at McGary's once and she was telling me that many of their products are donated or sold at very nominal cost by conventional grocery stores, and other retail outlets. She was passionate about what McGary's does, specifically that they provide nutrition to people (and she was the one who brought up that, yes, they are in a sketchy part of town) to people living in poverty. That made me love McGary's even more. Even if you are not living in poverty, but you like to save money. go check them out. A previous reviewer was disappointed that their purchase was not just slightly expired food, but food that had expired many years ago, and therefore was spoiled. This can happen. Two things to know: 1. Check the expiration date when you shop at McGary's. The previous reviewer was correct, things can have expired a month ago, or six years ago. This can make a big difference in the quality of the product now. But also... 2. Keep your receipt. If anything you buy at McGary's HAS gone bad, they will give you your money back. I have not experienced this guarantee yet, as nothing I have purchased has been spoiled, but it is their stated policy. Generally, you can buy a lot of processed, shelf-stable food at McGary's. Things like Hamburger Helper, canned soup, Little Debbie's...but you can also find some gems. I've come across some imported fancy things there, things like mustard and capers that an expiration date of two months ago has no bearing upon their goodness. There is a gluten free section now. I personally tend to stock up on things like canned fish, mustard, jerky, and protein shakes. The Other Half likes canned fruit, pastries, juice, and has been wolfing down meat from their frozen section recently with no adverse results. We love this place. Go there. read more

Disappointed. Bought nothing. Bicycled six miles to purchase. Fernando insulted me and summarily removed my pannier bag, over the shoulder bag, and helmet outside the store. Started off well, "Welcome to McGary's" from across the store. Five minutes later "You have to leave your bags at the front." No finds to purchase by that point. When I said I wanted to make sure any and all items fit in my bicycle bags I heard "Your bag has to be at the front. Even a child could understand that." And advanced towards me, a 70 year old man, in a 'semi threatening' manner. And threatened to have me escorted out of the store. "You are here just to cause trouble." Then picked up my things and took them outside. Why would a manager, reputedly, treat a customer with disrespect. And lose a sale? What is next, "Leave your empty pockets at the front of the store?" I went to shop and to buy. I did not go to steal nor to be insulted. It was appropriate to ask for consideration of my need to not overbuy what might make ride home unsafe. And to name the insulting words. Zero stars. The store product I little know, since my business was not desired. One bottle of vitamin supplements had an expiration date of early 2015, so I wonder whether there is much turnover of product. read more

Items that they discount, not only stretch my food budget further, it allows me to once again afford little "extras" like snacks and desserts for lunches. They may not carry everything, but by starting there, it gives me a terrific head start on groceries, and the money I save there can go further at the next store I shop at. Their stock varies, so I am pleasantly surprised, quite often, with items they found that I couldn't afford otherwise. Their staff is friendly, courteous, and helpful...including the owner and his wife, who also work there. Where else will the owner of a store help you to your car with your groceries?? Apparently the reviewer was not observant enough to realize it was a stun gun, not a "gun". The store is not located in the best area. We always find good buys there & have recommended it to others. when grocery outlet closed, our food budget doubled so we had to find another cheap grocery place. we found mcgarys. they always greet you when you open the door. they pay attention to costs. carts are a problem, so1 cart togo outside and you bring it back. the rules: if you try something new, get 1, try it. if you like it go back THAT DAY and get them all. poke around the corners, the best deal is the $10 bented can boxes. they have more than just pantry stored food. we get vitamins, aspirin. pay attention, we bought elk jerky for 10 cents oz. protein drinks for $1.99/4, and energy drinks 4 for $1. they markdown slow movers, stock up the pantry then. if you really liked it, so did other people, it will probably be gone next time. selection is limited by what the owners can find. coupled with market on the move for vegies we are back under $50 week for 2 on groceries. there is an outlet at the TVswapmeet. the workers are very nice. maybe the owner will introduce themselves when they are in the store.... read more

Oof! Writing another review because the prices can't be beat here, but had a little mishap with the Luna Bars. I'm not sure if it was because of the flavor (lemon), but when I bit into it there were little boll weevils in it! Thankfully it was the only one that had it.. A word of wise: They have these bargain boxes that are full of chips two for $5. A steal right? Sort of. More than half will be rancid, but you still do save money considering most bags were $3 each. In the end it's not worth going through every bag and sniffing radioactive waste, so don't buy these. read more

Today my son and I went to McGarys. They have some cool things and we go once and a while. I do not go for the perishables....too scary. However, the other stuff can be pretty awesome. When we were done looking, we went around and got in line...as is customary and polite. However, a Hispanic man decided that he was above politeness and went around and got in front of me. I said, "oh, I guess we don't need to get in line here" to that he said, " oh we do. I just have one thing and I worked 10 hours." the cashier took him first. At some point, he told the cashier that he had just been sent home early from his job and that he was bummed because he needed the 8 hours! sigh.... Later, when it was my turn, I calmly and politely told the cashier, a Hispanic kid, that in the future he should not let customers cut in front of other customers, that it is rude and does not set the tone for positive customer relations. His reply, "Oh I didn't think it was rude. He only had one thing after all." To that, my response was to leave and not purchase items from stores with such low morals and terrible customer service. Might I add, had the man asked me if he could go in front of me because I had more items....I would have said yes. Also, if he had gotten behind me and I had seen that he he only had one item I would (and have done so many time in the past) instructed him to go in front of me.
