Really fun bar to catch a drink and catch up with friends. Bar staff is super cool. We were visiting town, and met some kind strangers and fellow travelers. Night life here is fun as well. One of the lamest/strangest places I've ever been. After casually hanging out with the asshole in question and buying multiple people drinks for everyone at the bar, I open the door for someone and the wana be hippie gets crazy and aggressively accuses me of running out on the bill! This was obviously surprising and disappointing so I threw him a few hundred dollars but definitely one of the weirdest interactions I've had with a "business owner" these guys, especially the owner have a lot of internal things they need to deal with before they will be capable to deal with the general public. This used to be a fun bar, but the overzealous doorman and poor management make it an unpleasant, stressful experience. A place to avoid.

Couple years back my 18 year old dog had an accident and pooped in front of the sidewalk of this establishment. I didnt have a bag to pick it up with so i was just standing there waiting to see if i could fetch a napkin from someone in the restaraunt. Before i caught anyone's attention to the owner came out completely escalated and rather then giving me a chance to clean up he literally egged me on into getting in a physical altercation with him to which i just stayed calm even with him getting inches from my face, spitting on me, threatening to hose me then even physically shoving me in front of a crowd of people on the street. Called the cops over and they tried to say i must have did something to escalate him to act that way (i didnt) which also doesn't make any sense and is unacceptable in any situation. Youre lucky i decided not to press charges or even sue you. Guy who owns this place is a complete joke and doesn't deserve to own or run a business read more

Friendly bar tenders who know the town and have fabulous suggestions on where to eat and shop! Huge selection of flavored Vodkas and the BEST Bloody Mary! I usually love this place, nice smoking area and the people and drinks are normally great. Trish is AMAZING, I cannot say enough good things about her. She makes a mean margarita and is always so sweet. She earned two of these stars. Recently I've seen a new bar tender, the blonde girl with tattoos, and she makes the worst margarita I have ever had. My husband and I had to ask her for a splash of orange juice or SOMETHING to make it drinkable, and she was extremely rude. Last night we went in again hoping she wouldn't be there, and she was but we decided to give another chance. Again, the drink was undrinkable but we powered through, not even asking for orange juice because of our previous interaction with her. When we came back to the bar for a second drink, we went to the other side of the bar and spoke with a different bartender who unfortunately asked the blonde girl how she made our drinks, and made them the same way... super bummed read more

McGee's is working super hard on keeping live music in Nevada County. The live Jazz on Sundays in the afternoons has been amazing. I've been down there a lot lately and it is almost always hopping with either Rock and Roll for dancing or some great jazz jam. They do have DJs on Friday and Saturdays late night. But this week The Soft Bombs, local hard rock band, will be playing on Saturday night starting at 9:30. Last time they played they packed it... Having a prior positive experience, I was looking forward to a return visit. Captain Colander and I popped in on a Saturday night. BIG mistake! YUCK! Being completely accosted at the door by very loud and crappy music and a sea of poorly dressed hoochie-hill-girls, I should have ran immediately. Unfortunately, I'm a tad on the stubborn side so I blew some money, and some sanity and stayed for one drink. Poor decision. Needless to say, a swift escape was made out the back door after promptly downing my vodka. In short, I think that I would come back to McGees but only before 2 p.m. and probably only on a weekday. We were in Nevada City for a wedding, and my husband and I wanted to go out for a drink the night before. After wandering around and popping into a few places, we found Mc Gees. Blasting an awesome mix of music, and finding the had the Giants game on, we were here to stay. Really nice older bartender. Decent drink prices. Great DJ. We even met a really nice local/ex-employee who bought us a round. (This all goes a long way for me, considering that I bartender in a nightclub, and am particular) Next time we are up in Nevada City, we will be back here! read more

This place is always super crowded, which is good when you know some of the people there, but not so much when you don't know any of the people. Every time I've been there, the music is super loud - I can barely hear the people I'm with. We always end up going to the back just so we can talk. But the back is so small that I always feel like I'm in the way. The bartenders are attentive and very nice. Over last year's Thanksgiving weekend, I was charged cover. But this last Saturday, I was not charged a cover. So, I'm not sure what determines the cover charge. The prices aren't bad, and they make their drinks STRONG! The door to the back patio is left open, so it usually kind of smokey in the back area of the bar. read more

I have to agree with many of the reviewers. First time I went we asked for a cocktail list. The bar tender said they don't have a cocktail list -- he used to work in SF and he can "make any drink." It was the worst Old Fashioned I've had a in a while. I figured I'd give it another shot and went again on a different day. Ordered a standard drink and it was awful. Bummer, because the ambience seems pretty cool in there. Drinks are bad and pricey. Much better off going to any number of other bars in downtown. read more

Absolutely the most insulting place I have ever visited in Nevada City in the last 40 years of coming here. A young man in a pony tail, pretending to be a bartender, purposely ignored us and chose to walk by us serve his friend who walked in after we sat at the bar waiting to order a drink. Deplorable action against non-locals. So many people here treat tourists poorly because they think they are better than they are. Without tourists, Nevada City would dry up blow away. We left and took our Tourist money to Friar Tucks...they believe that customer service is important. Stay away from this place... unless of course you are a local and you will be acknowledged. read more

I'm giving the place 2 Stars with an asterisk: If you live here and don't ever travel off the hill, you've only got a few options so if you apply the "Nevada City Handicap" to McGee's, I guess it would get "Four Stars". On weekends, McGee's can get crazy-packed with both locals & tourists, not necessarily a bad thing, however that can mean waiting a hell of long time to get a drink. Depending on the DJ, it can be hit & miss, the music sometimes gets cranked to where no one can hear you talk, i.e. your drink order, etc. You'll see all walks of life there including the four C's of Nevada County (Cougars, Clampers, Cannabis & Cops) so I don't think dress code has ever been an issue. There's a cover charge because your other choices are Coopers or the Mine Shaft. read more

I came here while I was in town over the Thanksgiving break. Not having any Nevada County bar experience under my belt yet I thought I would give it a try. It was completely the local college kids, home for a visit. For me, that was perfect and felt like a high school reunion. Bar was packed but the bartenders were friendly. Dance floor was a little sad, not too many partaking in the booty shaking but it was fun none the less. They were charging a cover, pretty ridiculous but I didn't have to pay it after sweet talking the bouncer. McGee's is a fun bar to go to. They have a small dance area and have a DJ playing all of today's hits. The back of the bar has a pool table and smoking area. The bartenders take care of you and make your drinks well and strong. I wouldn't suggest going here if you want to catch up with an old friend because it's loud in here. There is usually some sort of drama here on the weekends.. fights and stuff, but nothing too serious (that i have seen, plus i think that stuff happens in most bars). Mostly just drunk 20 something year old guys, having too much beer and thinking nothing can touch them. It's really entertaining actually. This is usually the bar i go to in NC if I go out, which isn't too often. read more

In town for our anniversary, my wife and i started to run the nevada city bar gauntlet. Started at the mine shaft, then golden era, we in our 30s, way too young for the golden era. So we left, walked 20feet and found McGees.....giants game was on, awesome. Bartender Mark said hello as we sat, obvious we were the early crowd only 9pm. Cool old bar, Mark is a manager, good dude, knew history of the bar and town. Made a killer irish mule. We had every intention of heading to the last couple bars after our 3rd round when Marks security team came in. Very cool group. Door girl, seriously, reminded me of my sister, this girl could whoop ass. I didn't test her. Mark informed us the bars all charge covers to get in. Now, me being from nevada, we only pay covers to strip clubs and night clubs, not bars. So i was hesitant, but, for the cover you get a drink ticket, your drink of choice. Cover was like $5. Thats not a cover, thats a steal of a deal. As the night progressed people would either scoff at the cover, which really isnt a cover, hints the ticket you paid 5 for gets you 1 drink anything you want. Now, if i was a broke ass hippy, id pay the 5 and get a long island ice tea.....and deodorant. What did these snowflakes ask for? A budlight, or cosmo......but bitched about the cover. There was a dj, i think he was good. By this time, ive veen sittin at this bar downing Irish mules and people watching. People were dancing so there's that. Bottom line, McGees is by far the best watering hole in town, Mark was outstanding along with the extra bartender who came on around 10, she was a 10. Whoa. But sassy. Perfect.
