I regularly support McKamey through monthly donations and attend their gala because I genuinely care about the organization's mission. However, I was disappointed with my recent phone interaction. I called to report an issue and also one that may be related to dogs being hit by cars in my area off the freeway, something that has happened multiple times over the past few months. During the call, I was frequently interrupted and the tone used felt raised, which gave me the impression that my call was a bother rather than a serious concern being addressed. While I understand call volume can be high, the interaction felt dismissive given the seriousness of the issue I was reporting. Super friendly staff! I adopted my dog in September then went back in March and adopted another. I like that they know their animals so it's easier to know what pet would be a good fit for your home. Not helpful at all! We had an extremely skinny but overly friendly one eyed cat show up at our house. After multiple days playing phone tag, my spouse finally got ahold of someone. He was told that we could bring the cat to them in a week and a half. Both of us are disabled and I have almost fallen over this cat several times. So now I guess I must remain hostage in my own home for 1.5 weeks, then use my vehicle to transport it due to animal control not controlling stray animals read more

The staff were friendly. They kinda left me to do my own thing and say hi to the cats. However, the conditions of where I got my kitten were kind of sad. The room was too warm and very stuffy and it was super dirty. The floor was dirty, the toys were dirty, and my little kitten with an upper respiratory infection was there. Surely that would make it worse? I feel like with the number of staff there, they totally could be doing more cleaning sessions. read more

My review of McKamey is based on my experience when dropping off a stray cat after attempting to locate her owner via social media. McKamey is the animal shelter that serves the City of Chattanooga, Red Bank, and Lakesite. If you live in any of those areas, this is where you drop off a stray animal if you can't or are unable to find his or her human companion. I had a great experience dealing with this circumstance. When I called ahead of time on dropping off the stray cat I had found, a staff member asked if I had posted the cat's picture in lost pet groups on social media. I had. I also updated my post to indicate that I was dropping the cat off at McKamey now. Then I gave the staff member a timeline on when I'd be arriving at the shelter. After arriving at the shelter, I walked into the lobby to fill out the animal surrender paperwork and then a staff member helped me get the cat out of my car. When I got home, I saw that the cat's human companion had posted that she was on her way to McKamey. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. The staff is nice enough if you can get a hold of them, but I had to call their emergency line every hour for 5 hours in order to talk to someone on Monday. This is after I've called every extention, leaving voice mails and texts and having emailed all three emails listed on their website (still no response to any of them today too). And unfortunately, I was calling about a pitbull having attacked another dog (for the second time). McKamey had already taken this same Pitbull away for charging at pedestrians while off leash with no owner to be found. We called the police that time because no one at animal control answers the phone, but then the police get mad if you don't call animal control. McKamey also refuses to do anything about these Pitbull attacks besides a "court date for the owner" because the owner won't willingly give up his Pitbull. How can the law allow an aggressive dog to attack it's neighbors multiple times and charge at pedestrians with zero consequences? I sure hope he doesn't attack me or a small child in the time it takes to finally get this aggressive animal placed elsewhere. read more

I recommend ANY animal shelter that is humanely housing, feeding and providing medical care and the loving human touch. McKamey, which is actually the city animal control and shelter facility, is taxpayer supported as well as through all levels of contribution and promotion. The facility is a highly impressive one on a large tract of land but you can't always judge a book by the cover. The shelter has always been under scrutiny for a number of very unattractive reasons, especially when it's function is to care for, house and place animals into qualifying homes. Qualifying is based largely on what potential adopters write on their forms. No one From the shelter visits the homes of potential adopter to make sure the conditions are good for the welfare of the animal. Once you get beyond the highly questionable events and administrative stains, you can move ahead to SAVE a homeless animal and feel very good about that. Having given you a heads up about the shameful aspect, I will tell you that the majority of the volunteers who do the work and connect with the animals are dedicated, conscientious and caring. I suggest all adopters chose a vet before adoption and have your pet received a complete physical so there are no surprised that can be life-threatening or more expensive than your budget. Adopting an animal is a life long decision and you should start out knowing your pet's medical condition. I can tell you that the shelter is always at capacity with great animals that want warm, inviting and loving homes. I was lucky to have been told that before I could take my dog home, she would have to be held to treat her for heart worms. To start, the staff is great, for how overwhelming the daily influx of people and animals are...with oncoming and new staff, just awesome! I hope i got the name right, but Kevin helped me with my lil girl lucy, a kitten I got there that developed a rare but fatal disease, he was very knowledgeable concerning the subject and was very sympathetic towards my concerns, worries, and feelings since my wife and I had grown close to the kitten. he assured me that himself and staff would explore all possible treatments and diagnoses. It turned out to be a unhappy ending unfortunately for lil lucy and the family but, in the 35 years or so that I've dealt with shelters I've never had a better experience. I recently just fostered six adorable kittens. And McCamey made it so easy for us to foster. All the kittens had to take medicine so they directed us where to put it and made it easy for us. They gave us a couple weeks worth of wet and dry food which was very nice. The customer service was great. I adopted a great 8 week old kitten I was told was once sick, but had since recovered, and been treated recently for fleas and ticks. Turns out I had to make 2 trips to the vet for a respiratory infection and multiple attempts to get rid of the fleas. These animals still deserve to be adopted, but staff will sell you a story that simply isn't true. The lady that helped us also told us we needed to "make a decision" after seeing 4 kittens. I should have known when I saw two people unfortunately return their animals because similar things came to light after the fact. They have amazing animals that need a home, this is just a not-so-honest facility desperate to unload animals by any means necessary. read more

I took my son's cat Whisper to be neutered and micro chipped.We dealt with Zachary. He was very nice and pleasant to deal with. We dropped off the cat at 8:00 a.m. We picked him up that same afternoon at 4:00p.m. and he came home and slept for 5 hours. Then he woke up and acted like nothing had ever happened. He was scaling our 72 inch cat tree. I am so happy that we have a low cost spay/neuter facility. I live in East Ridge and I had 3 homeless cats come to our house and adopt us. I've gotten all of them fixed. They are tame house cats now and even sleep with us. They are really fat and cute too. So yes, I would recommend them for your low cost spay/neuter needs. Oh, the microchips cost $25.00, but on Wednesdays it's $15.00 for microchipping. The have a website listing their services. Easily Google-able. read more

In September my fiancé and I adopted a kitten who was six months old. We had him home for about 2 days and had to take him to the vet due to vomiting and diarrhea. The vet told us it was due to a new environment and all the changes. Fast forward 5 months down the road in February he started acting very lethargic, not eating, and staying off by himself. This lasted for about a week until we decided to take him to the vet. Come to find out he was FIV Positive and was slowly dying, and we had to put him down. This is something that I think Mckameys should have warned us about, you get attached to your animal that you think is healthy and then all of sudden you have all these vet bills pile up and then you have a sick animal on your hands. read more

My children and I went to McKamey to adopt a cat. We weren't greeted right away and it took a few minutes to have someone help us. The first volunteer who helped us was great. Nice and friendly. From there, after about 30 minutes with her, we ventured back out front due to the rudeness and hostility of another person. From there it declined. I should of just walked out and went to another Pet Center, who is offering a better deal on adoptions, and who would of been much more helpful and friendly. two months ago i adopted a 7 month old kitten and had to put her down yesterday. Mckamey didn't inform me of any health problems but she struggled to eat since the first day i got her. Today, an employee told me that her back legs were paralyzed when she was brought in and that was never disclosed to me. They have the cutest animals but need to do better on their part and at least disclose all information about the pet. read more

I am so hurt and disappointed by my experience with McKamey Animal Shelter. My husband and I adopted a cat in May 2020. They told us she was great with other cats, and loved being with other cats. When we brought her home, she was immediately aggressive towards my 12 year old docile cat. I understand that kitties need time to get used to each other, so we kept them separated for over a month. When we finally let them interact, the kitty we adopted from McKamey attacked my old cat so badly that he had to go to the animal hospital for a few days. I had been in touch with McKamey throughout the month about what to do with this aggressive cat. I took her to the vet, did all the things, and still she was so aggressive towards me, my husband and my other cat. Taking her back to McKamey was truly one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. One of the techs was so sweet and supportive of our decision, especially with the McKamey cat putting our old cat in the hospital. But the head of cat adoptions, Stormy I believe, was absolutely horrible to us. She told us that there was a good chance the cat would be put down, and tried to make us feel like it was our fault and our docile cat's fault. I asked if she could keep the toys that comforted the cat with her, and she flat out told me no, she wouldn't do that. We spent time to let them know what we learned about the cat in the month and a half we had her, that she would be happier and safer in a home with no other cats ESPECIALLY AFTER PUTTING A CAT IN THE HOSPITAL. Here's where I'm really upset... So I understand that cats are mysterious, finicky creatures. It's not all McKamey's fault that they originally told us the cat was good with other cats when she's obviously not. We understand. But today, we see that the cat we had to return is up for adoption again, and they are claiming she is great with other cats. To me, it seems like they just don't care. They are endangering another family's current cats!! Look, I really do understand how much work goes into a shelter and I am grateful for the overall effort and existence of McKamey and the folks who work there. But come on!! Why are they deliberately putting other cats in harms way?? I will never support McKamey ever again, and I truly do not recommend trusting what you read from them on Petfinder or from Stormy. My heart is so broken from this experience, that should have been so joyful to bring home a new family member. read more

I adopted an approximately 18 month old male, whom I have grown to love completely. Three months after adopting him, I took him to the vet because he had a cold in his eye. Turns out, he has feline autoimmune disease and there is no cure. He is also older than I was told. He is doing better, had to have four teeth removed and we have found that vitamins have helped he a good deal. Still, I know he won't be with me for as many years as I had hoped. He should have been tested before being put up for adoption. As he is a strictly indoor cat, he is not a danger to other cats in the neighborhood. read more
