The best chippy! Although you order and pay at a kiosk, McKay's Fish & Chips in Pitlochry had the best fish we ate in all of Scotland. The portions of moist flaky haddock, breaded to a perfectly crunchy texture were generous. The chips and onion rings were also delicious. The mushy peas were a bit soupy, but we were there for the fish. The counter staff was efficient, preparing the meals and quickly delivering them to patrons in the attached seating/waiting room. We checked out the cool school light fixtures in the atrium of the dining area while we waited. There were no public restrooms in the fish shop, but they offered use of the facilities at McKay's restaurant next door. read more

HD dinner there with my wife and son. We picked the 33 pound 3 course menu and did not regret it. Food quality, taste, and quantity was very good. Ambiance is also very upbeat and tastefully decorated with live music a couple of times a week. Would definitely go back next time in town. read more

McKays is actually 2 restaurants - one side a seafood fast casual joint and the other a sit down, more upscale vibe. We opted for the seafood side based on menu and price and were not disappointed. Their fish and chips is not only super fresh but generously sized. Even the non-seafood items were delicious. I ordered the steak pie + mac and cheese and it was comfort food to the max! The steak pie (aka beef stew) was super flavorful and filling. The mac and cheese was better than most and did not disappoint. A heads up on bathroom - the seafood side doesn't offer toilets but you can go next door to the other McKays and they'll let you use theirs. The Food! We ordered the Beef Roast for two along with 2 Murphy pints. We were a bit disappointed as it took about 1/2 hr or more to receive our order. Our waiter checked back periodically to let us know we weren't being forgotten. Our dinner finally arrived. The roast was cooked to perfection...medium rare. My group stopped in Pitlochry as the last stop on a full day tour of different parts of Scotland. Upon arrival our amazing tour guide (David) made 2 suggestions. If you're in the mood for ice cream go to Scotch Corner for whisky ice cream (see my review) and McKays fast casual restaurant, named Fish & Chips, for fish and chips or cullen skink. I had to try the cullen skink and I'm glad I did. The soup came with 2 large pieces of thick cut soft white bread, perfect for dipping in the creamy cullen skink. If I you hadn't told me what the soup was I would have guessed clam chowder. Both have the same white, thick, creamy texture with chunks of potato and seafood. Very comforting, filling, and perfect for a cool, windy day. You can get a cup (only size) for £6.95. If I can, someday I would definitely go back to try the fish and enjoy more of the town. read more

This place was really a miss for me. We came here on the recommendation of the ticket counter manager at Blair Atholl. We certainly must have ordered the wrong dishes and we also did come at high season, so they had other people serving who were new to the city, area, language and restaurant. Taking that into account, I will say that they have a really good space, lots of tables and will seat you pretty quickly. The food was just passable for me, not really great, the food took a while to get to the table. I ordered dessert since I was told to order it when I ordered my meal and it came out in the middle of my main course. I tried the scallops- passable, the veggie hot pot- pretty terrible, and the sticky toffee pudding- incredible! I also got the Rusty Nail to drink and it was fantastic. Perhaps its best to order bar food from the menu when you come here Dogs are permitted in the restaurant as are kids. There were a good number of families seated there. They have live music in the evenings and also have a pool table in the back. Bathrooms are in good condition. This is one of the times where a 1/2 star rating would be really appropriate. Staying at a nearby spa where the menu didn't tempt us, we headed here for a wee drinkie and some food. Its really cosy and warming inside, and we settled in with some drinks whilst browsing the menu. Its pretty standard pub grub - steak pies and burgers and some nice salad and pasta dishes. I opted for the veggie burger with salad which was pretty standard fare but tasty enough. Mr H went for the beef burger and chips which again was tasty enough. A local band started playing which added to the "we're in the Highlands isn' t this lovely" atmosphere and as it was a Sunday night it did feel like you were in with the locals. Deciding to sample some desserts, we went for an apple crumble with custard and a chocolate brownie. These were a real let down. At £6 they weren' t the cheapest, and bizarrely the apple crumble was stone cold with what seemed to be basically a biscuit crumbled over some cold stewed apples - not good. The brownie was okay - it had chocolate in it, but wasn't particularly memorable and was pretty tiny for the price. On the whole I'd say I'm going with 4 stars cause it was a nice venue to wile away a few hours, and the staff and clientele were friendly and welcoming but on this occasion the food wasn't anything to write home about. read more

Crisp cold afternoon in Pitlochry and we popped in here to warm up and grab some food Found a table had a look over the menu and made our choices, go up to the bar to order and so far all is well Everyone is friendly, helpful and dressed in kilts to give the tourists something to smile about The interior is cosy yet a feeling of openness, nice authentic looking like a brick/log cabin inside without feeling faked and mass produced I ordered the Cullen skink and was a little disappointed with the portion size given the price, however it was a nice thick skink unlike the watery ones some people we've up, there wasn't much fish in the soup either so they loose some marks for the starter Main course was a chilli burger with fries and onion rings It was well presented however nothing special, burger patty was a little dry so was glad of the chilli on top The service was too efficient (can't believe I'm saying that) 3 times they tried to take my plate away while I was still eating and on the fourth I finally gave up and let them take it even though I would have still picked away at the fries during our conversation When you see my napkin on the plate and the cutlery that's when I'm done Anyway I would stop by again but would try other places around first before rushing back read more

Was looking for late dinner after a day of hiking. Originally went into McKays but was told they were no longer serving. Walked out and heard the comment "isn't she a tart lady." A manager of sorts came out after me, apologized, and suggested Prince of India because he had shut the kitchen for the evening because of low demand. Given the price rating and the claim of "Scottish Hospitality," I expected this restaurant could handle a well-showered female patron in jeans and a nice blouse. So, if you are a "tart lady" I would recommend not wasting your time and going straight to Prince of India where the customer service was outstanding, and I was served a nice whisky on the house after complimenting them on their delicious food and customer service. read more

Stopped here while touring with a tour group and ended up really liking it. The waitress was super patient with us when we asked for a local whiskey and beer- clearly not being from that area. She made a good suggestion for both of us and gave us plenty of time with the menu. My husband got the haggis and tatties and I got the scampi and chips. Both were delicious and warm and really hit the spot after touring around all morning. If we ever find ourselves in Pitlochry again, we will be certain to stop here again. read more

Let me start this review by saying that the food was fantastic. The atmosphere of McKays was also very lovely. If I walked in off the street to have a bite to eat with a friend then I would probably give this a five star review. However, this was not the case. I had arrived with a party of ten. We had booked a table a couple of weeks in advance in preparation. Earlier in the day we realised that we were running behind schedule and so I popped in to ask if we could push our booking back an hour. This wasn't a problem, the gentleman behind the bar said, except there was no record of our booking. He noted it down in the bookings diary and asked if my friend who had made the original booking could pop in. He went in shortly after, showed him the original email correspondence, but there was still no resolution as to why the booking hadn't been made. Anyway, no problem we thought, the booking had now been noted down in the diary. Six of us turned up for our booking with the other four following 15 mintues behind. When we arrived and asked for our table we were greeted with blank faces; no table had been prepared for us. We told them that we were a party of ten and had already been in twice today to sort out this booking. The staff walked away looking for a table for us. They came back some time later and advised that they'd found us a table for six right under the screen that had the football on. We told them that there would be ten of us and that we wanted to eat and didn't want to be sat under the screen. We waited at the bar, the rest of our party arrive, and some time later one of the members of staff comes back to us and tells us that they now have a table of ten sorted in the same position and they'd pulled it away from the screen. We had to reiterate that we didn't want to be near the screen at all. We were there for dinner and didn't want to be sat around all the men drinking and watching the football (there were plenty of other tables in the restaurant for people to eat, away from the football). So, we waited some more. Eventually, they found us a table of ten. About an hour had passed from the time of our original booking to the time we eventually got our table and sat down. We had dinner and it was delicious. We received our bill, had a bit of a whinge, and got 20% off the food. It's a shame that we had such a bad experience overall through things that were entirely preventable and had ample opportunity before we arrived to have been sorted. If you're coming in as a couple or a table of four then I'd recommend it. If you require a booking for a larger party, then perhaps try somewhere else. read more

So, I'm currently residing next door to McKays and this place is great! It's a lot of fun with excellent staff, great beer and live music every night. There's a restaurant, bar food and a fish and chip shop (attached to the side). There's not many options for vegetarians but what they do offer is pretty good. The prices are slightly high but that's to be expected in a tourist town. The pints of Ben-Y-Vrackie are delish, ice cold and only £3.50 (or free if you take a selfie on top of the Ben Vrackie Mountain) There are some beautiful, comfortable couches to relax in and enjoy a beer whilst listening to some live, traditional music. On the weekends, the hall at the back turns into a nightclub, which is slightly insane but a lot of fun. It's very loud, especially when you have to work the next morning but it's usually over by 1-1:30. (I'm currently listening to the DJ playing Rihanna as I try to sleep!) The bread it came with made it a bit heavy for lunch so beware my fellow ladies! Mashed potatoes were a bit run of the mill, not anything to write home about but good enough. My friends and I weren't expecting to find such a gem when we were passing through Pitlochry. At one corner there was a pool table and the other were cheering fans watching football on the telly. Particularly nice to see if you're a tourist. Would have been awesome to see it at night in all its glory. Service was so disappointing. Came in for a drink and the bartender seemed bothered. We sat for a while and almost ate dinner here. I walked around in search of someone to ask about where to sit - when I finally asked, the answer was met with rude demeanor, like I was an idiot for asking if there were dining/bar sections. Obvious breakdown even though there looked to be a lot of wait staff working.
