Hillary Dawn came onto my case a month before mediation, got up to speed quickly, and achieved the end goal, which was a divorce. It was very expensive, despite being on the case for a short time, but it was worth it to get to the finish line. I appreciate that Hillary listened and processed my experience while working hard to make things happen. The only reason I didn't give a 5/5 is due to the cost. My experience with this firm was extremely disappointing and left me feeling exploited. The costs associated with their services are exorbitant, with tens of thousands of dollars required upfront. For the hefty price tag, I expected a high level of service and expertise. Unfortunately, what I got was subpar. The lawyers failed to provide clear answers to my questions, leaving me confused and uncertain throughout the process. Instead of guiding me through the necessary steps, they shifted tasks onto me, only to bill me for their supposed "review" of my work. Much of the work they requested was unnecessary and never utilized. Even after the divorce was finalized, I was left in the dark on how to utilize my divorce documents. You'd think that for the substantial fees paid, they would provide some level of post-divorce support. The billing was relentless, with every minor task or communication scrutinized for potential charges. The lack of transparency and value for money was staggering. Unless you have upwards of $100,000 to spend on a divorce with little return, I would never recommend MCKINLEY IRVIN. In fact, my husband is an attorney - just in a different state. I know what I want and it's straightforward. My consultation with Hilary Dawn added no value to what I wanted or knew already. Took 24 minutes for $335 and was told I needed to place an absurd retainer fee to start. Yes, she offered to lower the bar out of goodwill, but the firm lost me as a client in the approach. Worst law firm in Tacoma hands down and full of crooked fee churning extortionists. I hired Mark (the fighter pilot) to handle my extremely stressful divorce at the recommendation of a business partner who actually paid for the retainer of 14,000. Not only did they use the entire retainer before the temporary orders hearing but they used the withdrawal scam on me too. I ended up paying 24,000 just to get through the temporary orders hearing and paid another 5,000 for a different law firm to finish my divorce. It was a complete travesty...We were desperate to get to the temporary orders hearing and my "rockstar" lawyer who said I had a team of experienced people to lean on called me 2 hours before the hearing and cancelled it. My soon to be Ex wife called me and berated me for playing games and canceling the hearing. At the next one they pulled my representation at the last minute to extort another 5,000 and I reluctantly paid it only to show up at the hearing to find out the legal team didn't reinstate the hearing leaving us again without a hearing..I was told I wouldn't be charged for the messed up hearing but I was and was charged around 6,000 for mistakes they made. After hearing from my Ex I found out my lawyer would show up at a hearing smelling of alcohol making a fool of himself. This literally was the worst experience I've had with a professional organization in my life. I asked for a refund of fees and wrote the partners a complaint letter only to find out they all told me to go fly a F*$&# kite. Stay away at all costs and do not give them retainers as they will only use the entire amount and leave you hanging and desperate. They prey on peoples fears and emotions to line their pockets. I would have sued for malpractice but I was too emotionally distraught to engage in another court battle. These people are literally wolves in sheep clothing. Stay away at all cost. read more

TL;DR: Very expensive work, delivered shockingly unprofessionally. Ran my bill for a limited services engagement up over $3000 with the response papers barely filed in a minor support modification, and then asked for another $3500. Still haven't received an invoice for the last thousand they've spent for which no work was authorized, but it disappeared out of the trust already and they want more. They failed to track the schedule or fully explain what they needed, not even acknowledging receiving the petition papers until 14 days in. They failed even to meet the expectations they *did* set with me regarding when I'd hear back about my case, and then charged me more when I emailed them asking what's going on. Tons of excuses about the attorney's own personal problems ranging from parental care, to daycare, to their difficult commute, to in-service trainings, to even their own divorce proceedings, and then had the temerity to chastise me about being unreasonable to expect same-day response. This, after 3 emails in 5 days asking for status, as my response window was running out. It should have been a simple parenting plan but over a year later and over $15,000 later nothing was filed that we requested. Their attorneys may be good but I couldn't even get that far. After a screening where they learned I was unemployed and semi retired, they scheduled me for a $345 consultation. After the consultation I called back to pay my retainer. After a few questions being asked she basically told me I am ineligible to hire their attorneys because I was unemployed. I called and spoke with the manager for client services (Damon) who reiterated what the other gal said but gave me a couple options: 1) have a co signer that makes $75k+ a year or 2) pay twice the retainer which would be $13k. They knew I was unemployed but failed to give this information before taking my consultation money. Regardless of their policies it was such a hassle and am looking elsewhere. And yes, I am more than capable of paying their high dollar attorneys. Update: The next business day I was refunded my consultation fee. read more

My sister decided on McKinley Ivin after reviewing online reviews, reviewing firm profiles, and in person consultations. After losing full custody of her two daughters every lawyer she spoke to to share her story told her that what happened to her shouldn't have and an appeal would be the best option for her. She chose to move forward with Matthew due to the fact he's supposed to be known for his "success in winning appeals". It was one of the worst decisions and experiences I've ever seen and hope that no one else has to go through it. She was made promises that weren't kept, was kept in the dark without updates (even with multiple attempts of reaching out), and left with a feeling that she was the only one fighting the case. When you've already lost your children and been told by professionals that it shouldn't have happened, but then see no sense of urgency and constant breaking of promises, it's extremely frustrating and discouraging. After MONTHS of time invested and tens of thousands of dollars spent, they lost the appeal. Again, after consulting with professionals, they moved forward with requesting a reconsideration. There was no timeline given and after following up over and over again after months of no answer, she found out they lost the request for reconsideration and the response from her lawyer was "I'm not sure why I wasn't notified of the outcome." It was disgusting and painful to watch as an outsider. She's lost custody of her children and the "open and shut" appeal we expected is not the reality she lives with today. You have choices. Do not go with McKinley Irvin even when they tell you you'll win. They'll extract thousands of dollars from you, string you along, and break promises. Find a better firm. Find a better lawyer. I have engaged the services of two lawyers in my lifetime, and this experience was by far the worst. Ours was a simple matter, involving my daughter and her boyfriend and their child. We hired this firm to do a parenting plan, residential schedule, and child support, and at the end of the day, these relatively simple (and uncontested) matters cost us almost $10,000.00 and took almost a year to complete, and we are convinced that if we hadn't threatened to take our concerns to the managing partners, we would still be hanging somewhere out there in limbo, with nothing getting done and with the charges piling up every month. Our attorney Matthew Taylor was at times utterly unresponsive for extended periods, routinely broke commitments to call or provide status updates, but he was always extremely attentive to updating the billing system every time he had a thought about our case, or mentioned it in a staff meeting or in an elevator. This firm- McKinley Family Law Firm- is highly inadequate and non responsive. My friend hired attorney Lindsay from the Tacoma, WA office for an uncontested divorce. Retainer 2500. Despite the client having emailed and provided all necessary requested info, it was 2.5 MONTHS before a first draft for the uncomplicated, uncontested divorce was emailed to the client for review. During that time, client contacted firm a handful of times leaving polite voicemails inquiring on the progress. The first draft finally delivered was billed at ~1500. It was inaccurate, incomplete, and half done. It was evident it was a pre-form with names and information half filled, child's age wrong, retirement not addressed despite specific instructions to do so ahead of time. Because client was being charged for inquiring on progress of the case, and prior inquiries was told "within the day" or "within the next few days", and it still was some 2.5 months before receiving results, client this time waited 4-5 weeks before calling to ask for results. Attorney claimed email must have been "lost in junk mail". Was pointed out the attorney should have followed up in the time frame, and should have client's info in her email address book. Also, odd that there prior emails were received without issue. Lindsay apologised profusely and miraculously emailed client paperwork within the day. Again the child's age was incorrect, and a change needed to be made due to circumstances beyond the firm's control regarding the child support issue. Lindsay did respond and state they would get to it immediately. That was some 3 weeks ago. Since then client received a BILL for an additional 1k, since the retainer funds had been used. Of note, client was also charged each time they spoke with him or listened to a voicemail wherein he asks for the progress of the first draft of the divorce in that near 3 month time frame. I do not feel, based on this experience this Firm should in any manner be listed as one o the top law firms, given this is a small uncontested and simple straight forward divorce. It is now going on 5 months, and the client has paid a total of 3500, and the divorce has not even be filed yet. Unconscionable. read more
