-Called and confirmed they accepted my eye care insurance -Arrived at Costco and was provided a disclosure that indicated dilation of my eyes was $55 and if I didn't get my eyes dilated they would want to take a picture of my eyes at an extra cost. -Asked receptionist to confirm dilation fee as my insurance covers it. She would not and insisted it didn't. After leaving without the exam I confirmed my insurance 100% covers the entire exam including dilation. -Called Costco optometrist in our home state. They charge $15, yes $15 for dilation. $55 much of a ripoff by Dr McMahill ? -Wonder if Costco is aware of his business practices ? read more

Went to get contacts in dec 2024, told them right away that I suffer from severe dry eye, oh no problem we have contacts for that..they also included free eye exam for glasses. So I got tested got contacts and could not see blurry could barely get them out...went bk and she said just wait awhile will try again went in several times eyes too dry..but did ask about glass rx no worries just get glass rx filled..did at Costco and same thing total blur..just went bk June 2025 and same thing eyes are too dry for contacts...BEWARE of this place. read more

Ok this gets a second star because the rest of the staff was awesome and friendly. Really professional BUT, the receptionist in the front. Younger Hispanic lady long black hair no name tag was VERY rude. If I have to deal with her to get inside to the rest of the team (who again was awesome) I will think twice. There are plenty of other places I can get my eye exam where they are nice to you at check in and check out. My husband and I had an exam with Michelle Zaw. She was very professional and I would go back to see her again. The assistant techs were also very nice. My low stars are based on the first person that you see when you walk in the door. The front desk girl. She wore no name tag, she was wearing lots of makeup and actually had a pretty face, but she was very rude. She blamed my husband and I for not telling her that we had insurance when it came down to pay. He was so upset that he left the lobby and went out to the waiting area. The insurance was not highlighted or requested on the form, and since we both had been there before, we assumed our insurance was on file since we weren't asked for it up front. It is not our responsibility to volunteer the information. We should have been asked by the young lady over the phone when she set up our appointments. Even when we checked in, it wasn't requested or the question asked. Do your job. Be nice about it and don't complain that it's going to be an inconvenience for you to enter all the info at that moment which by the way only took you a few minutes. You are the face everyone sees and you represent the office and the rest of the staff. Your demeanor sets the tone and you did a poor job. read more

The Doctor was great and the equipment is great. Staff at greeting is very cold, not friendly. Even though we are regular customers at Costco optometry, his staff-took a while to find our previous visit information. Again, the support staff for the optometrist scores low in my opinion. The Costco staff where you get fitted for glasses and make the purchase order however is efficient. Costco offers great value in their selections and they keep glasses lense costs down. read more

Bring the kids here for exams. Great hours including Saturdays which is helpful with school and work. Very small office but it works well and the Dr was able to explain things to the kids that they understood. Easy in and out. read more

Dr.McMahill was very unpleasant to the point of screaming at me. I was wearing my mask for protection and he started screaming at me to take off as my mask was fogging his lens. A polite request would have been more appropriate. I then read the line he told me to read and waited for more instruction. At that point he started screaming again and it was clearly abusive. I got up right afterwards and left halfway through the exam. I told him I didn't speak to him that way and he can't speak to me that way. I am shocked that a doctor can be so verbally abusive. read more

I had the most thorough and informative eye examination with G. McMahill, OD. The complete exam takes less than twenty minutes. I was left with a sense that an extremely competent optometrist just provided me with a valuable service. The office is located at the Costco optical department in Palm Desert. Dr. McMahill is pleasant, a good communicator, and efficient. I rang the office to book the appointment about a week before the exam. The cost for the evaluation & Rx for glasses and contacts is reasonable. If you carry vision insurance, check your plan to see if Dr. McMahill is a provided in the network. Again, I left the optometrist's office completely satisfied. I highly recommend Dr. McMahill for your eyecare needs. read more

This place and staff - especially the optometrist - is FANTASTIC! I happened to find myself in the desert longer than I planned and needed some emergency contacts. The issue - my prescription had expired ... so I actually needed BOTH an eye exam AND enough contact lenses to make it through the end of the week. I originally called the LaQuinta store and they had zero availability. They recommend the Rancho Mirage CostCo. I called and they could take me immediately. Wonderful! Admittedly - their little office is small - but like all CostCo optometrists, the doctors are terrific, warm, personable and highly experienced. I was in and out in an hour or so ... a glasses and contact Rx, and enough contacts to last me for the remainder of the trip. Dr. McMahill at the Costco location in Palm Desert has been my optometrist for 13 years. From my twenties to now my forties, I've trusted the well-being of my eyesight and health to him because he's attentive, professional, and friendly. Typically, I can get in to see him within a few days of calling to request an appointment, which is great, too! During my yearly appointment today, I see that he has new staff members, too (at least new since my last appointment about a year ago). They're great - attentive, courteous, and efficient. Very busy practice in a tiny little box at Cosco, but I felt 100% taken care of and every step of the way. All of the pre-examination tests done by one of the front office staff happen quickly and effortlessly. Also nice and clean, with each device being cleaned before my use. The provider himself was friendly, thorough, and most importantly, listened to my needs. I had been to another (non-Costco) provider in the desert who had messed up my prescription. Doctor took the time to be sure we got it just right this time. I had a great experience today with Dr Adkins. I was a new patient as my Optometrist of 20+years had abruptly closed her office. I was a bit freaked out when I arrived and saw all the people waiting at the counter with numbers in their hand, but since I had an appointment, I was promptly seen. I saw Dr. Adkins yesterday and I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of my exam including a eye scan. There is equipment for testing for glaucoma, for a scan of the eye to see behind it and for refraction. The doctor did his exam and gave me some information that I did not have before about my vision, which I found interesting. I had tried to book a local popular ophthalmologist and could not get an appointment until July for what I needed and was so happy to call and get an appointment within a day. read more

Love getting my eyes tested at Costco for the last 5yrs, yearly. Dr McMahill is great. Very knowledgeable, takes the time, and listens to my concerns. I get headaches from too much time on the computer working. This last time he suggested that I have them put my bi-phocal prescription on the lenses so when I looked down to read I focused much easier. The Big names op, that I went to told me this is your prescription and it gave me eye strain. The dr would not listen to me. He kept saying no this is your prescription. TERRIBLE customer service! The rudest front desk staff, the doctor I seen was dry, vague, impatient and gave my son the wrong prescription. Front desk was so rude when we went in for an appointment, we also waited an hour to be seen past our appointment time, Dr. was rude and impatient with adults and children. After given my prescription, I was trying to order glasses online and called the office to verify prescription because the doctors handwriting was illegible, she was more than condescending and insisted that there was no way I had a written prescription because they ONLY print prescriptions. After she realized that I indeed had a written prescription, I asked her to confirm and also asked if his glasses were for reading or distance. She shortly answered and then said "is that all?" And when I replied yes, she hung up on me. When I called a month or so later to have my sons eyes checked again (because I had new glasses ordered and my son says he can't see out of them because they are too strong of a Rx) the prescription he gave me was obviously not correct. I then called back and asked if I can be seen and they informed me yes, but I would be charged in full for a complete exam because it had been past 3 months (it's was 4.5 months since his exam). After all of that I decided to go to a different doctor and get a second exam (which cost me an additional $75 out of my pocket) and his prescription was indeed wrong. Moral of the story: PLEASE Just go somewhere else to save your time and money. read more

Dr. McMahill is an excellent eye doctor, however his staff does not compare. Receptionist is rude on phone and in person. Does not have a professional tone nor is she helpful. Due to her incompetency, I will no longer schedule my exams here and have found a new eye Dr. I hope Dr. McMahill reviews his Yelp ratings and is able to resolve his staff issues as he should have staff that respects him and supports his success. First impressions reflect a business and if someone doesn't know Dr. McMahill and gets poor treatment on the phone, he's likely to lose that patient. So unfortunate! read more

I was recently examined by Dr McMahill at the Costco Optical Center. I was very pleased with Dr McMahill's examination, however I was really displeased with the galsses fitters at Costco. They were disinterested and incompetent. I had to replace the temples attached to my old frames which were fitted by a competent optician. So nice to have an eye exam where they don't hold your prescription hostage while you're forced to endure a hard sale on glasses. Staff were professional and courteous. The OD was very informative. Definitely opt in for the laser retinal imaging. You may be thinking the extra $29.95 fee is too much or isn't worth it, but keep in mind it's done with an $80,000 Optos machine. Optos is currently the most advanced thorough way of visualizing your retina. Some offices charge double this fee for the service. read more

I had my old contacts and said these are good and just wanted to verify if I needed a little tweak. Instead I can't see now? Just refilled my old prescription. Just moved here from LA and made an appointment to see Dr. McMahill. I was seen right away. Didnt feel rushed at all during my time with the doc. His staff was great. Front desk was able to print out my itemized receipt in like 2 seconds. The negative reviews I've read on here sound like a completely different doctor and office than the one that I went to. I love Dr. Adkins, he is a gem! I saw him in Palm Desert and was so impressed with him that I followed him here. He knows his stuff! Very professional and knowledgeable, years of experience, friendly and personable. I was seen IMMEDIATELY and he took the necessary time and showed me my scans. Aasked perfect, pertinent questions. Listened to my answers and make the best suggestions for me. I am oh so happy! Cameron and Imani were also delights. They know what they're doing and are just such terrific, helpful people. The best experience I've ever had with eye exams and contact fittings. Dr Adkins put me in Biofinities for the 1st time and they are the absolute most fabulous contacts. I can wear them twice as long as the many other brands I've tried....in total comfort! I had never even heard of them before. Without hesitation I strongly and wholeheartedly encourage you to put your trust in this amazing office and staff!!! This is the only guy I'll ever get my eyes checked with. He's great!! Even takes the time to remind me about importance of sunglasses, being that I have green eyes, teaches me about the different types of eye drops on the market. Highly recommended! Side note: staff making appointments really should inform customers who will be seeing them. I do not want to see any other optometrist besides Dr MacMahill, and it has happened that they had an availability on a Saturday, booked me with somebody else. My wife saw this doctor in January with an eye infection. He charged her and she paid via credit card. Two months ago when my wife wanted to get an eye exam thru our VSP insurance plan it was denied. The reason was that Dr. McMahill had charged our VSP insurance plan for the same visit as an exam. Well: 1. it was not an exam and he should have billed our Blue Cross medical insurance as this kind of eye problem is a medical issue 2. and he was paid in cash by my wife In conclusion, he double billed insurance. Insurance Fraud? He has refused to return my 13 calls to address this matter in a civil way. I will be asking Costco to look into his business practices as I do not want other Costco customers to be impacted by his unethical, immoral and illegal business practices. read more
