Vodka tonic, Midori sour, and Black Russian.
    Bridget O.

Stopped by for after dinner drinks, and I've never been so happy to feel the warmth of the warm fireplace. Plenty of seating options and three massive TV's with different games on display. We kept the drinks simple by ordering a Tito's and tonic, Midori sour, and a Black Russian. The noise level was just right and the music playing was a nice mixture. No complaints from me.

This is the co-owner of this bar who doesn't like to serve Black people :)

I had the displeasure of visiting this bar for the first time for the finale of Vanderpump Rules and got to witness one of the co-owners, Tobias Hampton, serve 3 parties in front of my friend, the only Black person in the bar. I stood behind her watching as she was ignored for 15 minutes, and when she finally said "hey, can I order?" Tobias yelled at her that he's "trying to work here." It was so egregious one of the other lovely patrons placed an order for her and was immediately served. I thought to myself: this is wrong, the owner of this bar would want to know this happened. The other co-owner, Max Young, told me that what ACTUALLY happened was that Tobias stepped away from the bar with the full intention of serving my friend to get more glasses, and when he came back, she was gone. He hopes that I don't hold a grudge since it obviously was a misunderstanding that wasn't about race. Tobias was behind the bar the entire time and served three people with the glasses he was "out of" in front of her.

Total hole in the wall bar that makes it more authentic. They setup some great out door seating with a portable TV. They sell empanadas to allow you to buy alcohol per the local codes but it's a great time and great service.

I wish i could remember what this shot was called! (I have the memory of a goldfish im sorry)

Imagine two Irish Americans getting a late start on Saint Patrick's Day, 2021. One Irish pub in Montclair was just too crowded for these Covid times. So, we went to another Irish hang-out but it wasn't happening. We decided to try Bill McNally's. When we drove by, we saw an outside structure that was all lit up and filled with people.  There was a long line, and we joined it--for well over an hour. I had to put my hands under my coat to keep them warm. The server invited us to sit with another couple at a small table. When it was time to 7order, the server told the other couple that there was only one corn beef and cabbage dinner left--and they took it. When the waiter came back he told us that they had found one more corned beef and cabbage dinner. So, we got that one. The server was stretched quite thin--they needed more help. Celebratory sounds were coming from the booths--the more they drank--the louder it got. No one was let inside of the pub, but we were grateful to be out of line and sitting down. At our table, the boys talked, and us girls were pretty quiet. The server was so busy that my partner only had one beer--pretty amazing for a St. Partick's Day night out. There were heat lamps, but we weren't in their range. My partner and I shared a slightly warm corn beef dinner with one set of plastic plasticware. We ate it all, and decided to leave.  I don't think the restaurant was ready for ALL the people that showed up. Many left before they got to the front of the line. It wasn't the management's fault that we arrived too late to get a warm booth--so we could have celebrated uproariously!!! If we come next year, hopefully we can go inside, and celebrate with Irish whiskey.

    Pumptini at VPR watch party!

I logged into Yelp specifically to do a review of this bar, after having attended the last four weeks worth of Vanderpump Rules watch parties on Wednesday nights. First I want to thank the bar staff for letting us all come out and enjoy the show, and for putting up with our rowdiness. Was such a good time! This was my first time venturing out to McNallys and I have to say I wish I had discovered it sooner. The bar itself is amazing, plenty of space to spread out between the two rooms and the back patio. Friendly regulars, and the bartenders were wonderful at juggling the crowds around show time, and genuinely seemed to be getting in the spirit along with us bar patrons. The Pumptinis were a great added touch! Thanks again for hosting, hope you continue with the watch parties next season! In the meantime I'll still be stopping by to visit. Made plenty of new friends during these past few weeks and can't wait to keep the party going!

"cheater" pint glass. that's an inch of glass at the bottom
    C L.

Local spot, heavy on the sports, decent drink prices. Pool table, back room, and outdoor smoking area in back. Although crowded, the bartender immediately took our order. My only pet peeve is that they use "cheater" pint glasses. Be warned that these aren't true pints. It unfortunately happens in most bars around here.

How you put it together, how it looks and most importantly how it makes you feel when you sink into the couch or words. I have a lot of opinions and a lot to say. These days you really can't complain much - in the world you are a nag and in church you are labeled a legalist. The secret is if you say those things in a beautiful way or tip toe around a subject asking questions and letting the audience come up with their own conclusions. The young people today I have lots of sympathy for. The 50 year olds could get away with earning $50k/yr - the 40 year olds could get away with earning $100k/yr but the 20 and 30 year olds in the bay area with 2 kids need to earn $200k in their household to make ends meet. I just had a half order of the handcut french fries and they really are top-notch man, they're served with different condiments that you can help yourself to. I chose the Sriracha sauce and ketchup. I couldn't find the horseradish tonight. I've been coming in here for several years and I really dig it. Very special people hang out here, kind of a hippie Berkeley vibe. There are some negative reviews here about rude, more accurately, unresponsive bartenders, and I don't think they get what this place is all about. If you want a chatty, friendly bartender, go to an Irish pub. This place is all about creating unique concoctions in volume. Having said that, I'll tell you a story. In March 2019, I was with a chatty bartender here, since it was a quiet night. I was looking at the vast array of bottles, and noticed something that said "Buffalo Trace" but looked different from their usual bottle. I asked her what it was, and she didn't know. It had about three fingers left at the bottom, so she looked at me mischievously and said, "wanna finish it with me?" So we did. Turns out, that 375 ml bottle was worth about $300. It was one of their experimental batches, made with oats in 2002. I found a bottle online in England and got it shipped here. Best whiskey I've ever had.

I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

To start, they didn't have a single British beer on the menu. Guinness is Irish, not British, so that was already a letdown. On top of that, they were out of Scotch--pretty surprising for a pub. It took multiple trips to our table just to clarify that the clam chowder did not contain meatballs; the other soup of the day was meatball soup. Even then, the explanation we got was confusing. We also asked for our soup to come before the entrées, but everything arrived at the same time. As for the food, three of us ordered the fish and chips, and it was disappointing. The fries were cold and soggy, and the fish was soggy on the bottom where it sat on the fries. The fish itself seemed decent and tasted fine, but it was not prepared well.
