    Ahi Nicoise

Came for a party of 5 for an after work drinks. I went with the Ahi Nicoise to go with the great selections of draft beer. Definitely plan to go back. It was a solid spot in Rockridge.

Great food and ambiance at Monk's Kettle. We walked in on Saturday for lunch and sat at the bar. Their covered back patio is also a good option for a dinner. We got the steak frites and breakfast sandwich. Their steak frites were amazing, great sauce and well seasoned fries and the breakfast sandwich was very unique with lamb meat. The food came out pretty fast and they also have a vast beer option to pair with any dishes. I'll be coming back to try the burger sometime soon!

Showed up Saturday night, apparently you need reservations for busy nights( I guess I'm lucky). Mac and cheese was solid, burger was juicy. Steak frites looked ok my Mrs had that. Her garlic fries looked better than my regular fries. They have 20 different beers available, but I gave that up til Easter. Ima say 4.8/5. Great place despite not being able to describe how formal or casual it is.

Great service, yummy food, and dog friendly back patio! Came for lunch on a Sunday and sat down almost immediately. Cute ambiance for families. Quick service and friendly staff. Pork rinds (chips & dip) were delicious and the guacamole was extra limey which I loved. Butternut squash soup was delicious and cozy. Smash-burger was great. If you are starving get 2 patties tho. 1 was good for me because of the soup but if i hadn't gotten it I would have wanted two patties. Would recommend if you are in Rockridge!

Pretzel Rolls, kids steak frites, regular steak frites with garlic fries on the side, and Bricked Chicken Sandwich

Came here for the first time with two kiddos and the husband. Ordered steak for myself and the kids and we weren't given steak knives to cut with. Asked for an extra side of ranch with the steak knives and our server (Sarah H?) was a little snarky about bringing the knife without the ranch when I asked about it (kids don't like sharing sauces). Said she had the knives right there and hasn't been to the kitchen yet. I also saw her check in with other tables around us if everything was okay and she skipped us. As another reviewer said, this place calculated tip based on the total taxed amount which is not cool. The beer selection is good here and I like that you can get a 5oz kids meal with steak but not sure about the snarky service and tip calculating practice. Server also said the kids meal steak couldn't be done except well done ... luckily they brought out both steaks medium rare. The chicken sandwich was good - nice side salad. Requested the steak frites order to have the fries come on the side because another reviewer said it's better this way and am glad I ordered them on the side so the fries weren't as soggy. The pretzel rolls with cheese and mustard and the beets were probably my favorite. Bill came out to $110 before tip.

Solid gastro pub in the cozy Rockridge neighborhood. Menu is small, but the signature Steak Frites was an easy choice (make sure to order your fries extra crispy -- the dish is JUICY!). Ordered the charred octopus on the recommendation of the waitress, and it was an excellent suggestion. The octopus was tender and full of flavor. The waitstaff was attentive, if a bit overeager, but it's awesome to have a place like this open late. I'm sure their burger or chicken sandwich would be perfect after a night out.

A hesitant five stars from me. The good: Food was well plated and tasty. Despite being full, it did not feel crowded. If you're looking for fine dining with both tables and bar it brought that and felt both classy and casual. The bad: Pricy enough that I would not go here on a 'regular' night but not really nice enough to be an extra night out. Staff didn't refill our water and the bill did that suggested 20% tip thing when we were a small party of three. 20 minute wait for a table. Despite that^^ I think it earns its five and a recommendation.

Incredible Belgian Strong Dark called Abt 12

While I wasn't particularly impressed with the food here, I was blown away by the beer menu. I took an embarrassingly long time to decide on a beer, but when I finally did, it did not disappoint. Got a Belgian Dark Strong called Abt 12 and loved it. They have a huge and diverse menu, something for everyone. Also, the server and hostess (who maybe was the owner) were beyond welcoming and friendly, making for a wonderful evening.

Went to Rockridge for some walking around and browsing/shopping but needed a snack and didn't realize The Monk's Kettle was now in Oakland. I have been to the San Francisco location and remembered they had a great beer selection, but was doubly excited for the food! I got a Vienna lager from Urban Roots and we shared the burger (which you could tweak to be an impossible burger) and it came with fries, soup, or Kale salad. We had it with the potato leek and all of it was delicious. The space was styled nicely and they have a large outdoor space in the back. Service was quick and helpful, and we were checked in with often for more water, if we wanted anything else, and for the check. Would recommend, especially if you love beer!

We walked past this place as they were freshly painting the establishment's sign. It's a relatively new establishment, but not a new business. We took a quick peek at the menu and decided that we'd have to come back. We were in the mood for breakfast/brunch, and the (current) menu is pretty solidly in the lunch and dinner neck of the woods. The following week we decided to check it out for dinner. Reservations (currently via OpenTable) are highly recommended, but we were fortunate enough that the hostess was able to accomodate us at the bar even as walk-ins. This place is one of the most home-y and welcoming establishments we've seen in years. Every single person we encountered working there - from the busser to the owner - were absolutely pleasant and joyful. Service was fabulous, and the food was tasty. The menu is meant to be (and is!) delicious, but simple and unpretentious. It was so good on so many levels that we came back for lunch the next day. Again, it would have been lovely if they offered more brunch-like offerings (and could even have some strong competition for some of the breakfast places nearby), but we ended up with a veggie burger and the veggie sandwich. This time we sat outside on the back patio, which was woody and cozy, and again, we felt like we were among friends. This is our new favourite neighborhood haunt, and we'll be back - again and again. Oh, word to the wise - if you order the pretzel roll(s), do yourself a favor, and get two. It's a better deal, and if you only get one, it'll be gone before you know it, and you'll be jonesing for a second.

Wood Tavern met the criteria for a relatively nice American restaurant in North Oakland. We visited for lunch and wanted to make this special for our mom, so we were perhaps a bit overdressed in business casual, but this is Oakland after all. On an ordinary Thursday, there were multiple groups waiting outside for the restaurant to open at 11:30 AM. That in itself should tell you how popular this place is. My wife and I dined at sister restaurant Southie next door a few years ago and really enjoyed it (I also rated it five stars on Yelp), so I was confident Wood Tavern would not disappoint. I initially booked our reservation using OpenTable to link it to my account and get 100 points. Since the max party size for Wood Tavern on OpenTable is four, I had to call to get it changed to eight. Due to the large party size, the restaurant also required me to give them my credit card info and be subject to a $25 per person no-show fee. Upon arrival, our tables were ready for us in the back corner near the open kitchen. The restaurant is true to its name with a shared bar and dining room space that evoke the feel of a wood tavern. Here's what we had: Wine of the Day * Rosé (100% Zweigelt), Stefan Pratsch, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2024 ($16) "N/A Libations" and other drinks * Cherry Bomb! non-alcoholic cocktail ($13) - Tilden Lacewing, Amarena cherry, lime, ginger beer, tall glass * Shirley Temple ($5) * Diet Coke ($5) * Iced Tea ($4) Soup & Salad * Red & Golden Beet Salad x2 ($16 each, one with fish added for $8) - frisee, castelfranco, pistachios, orange segments, Laura Chenel goat cheese, Cara Cara orange vinaigrette Sandwiches * The Hot Pastrami x2 ($25 each) - Emmentaler cheese, Dijon-horseradish dressing, La Farine baguette Old Reliables * Seafood Stew ($32) - rock cod, Manila clams, PEI mussels, calamari, butter beans, fennel, leeks, chili flakes, garlic toast * Pork Ragu Casarecce ($30) - Castelvetrano olives, Pecorino Romano, Grana Padano, chili flakes, parsley * Tavern Burger with French Fries on Acme Soft Bun with All the Fixins x3 ($25 each, two with cheddar added for $2 each) Everything was excellent. As for what to order, I recommend all of the dishes we got. It really just depends on what you like and/or what you're in the mood for. Everyone loved the food. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, the pastrami was one of the best I've had anywhere, my mom raved about the seafood stew, my brother-in-law gobbled up all of the casarecce, and the burger was outstanding. Service was polite and speedy. Our server Sophia C was awesome. We split one of the salads and the stew, so they came out plated and served in half portions which was nice of the kitchen staff to do.

Some staff members looked rather bored. I didn't order alcohol. I just wanted to eat. I chose a chili cheese dog, which included Garlic fries. I paid $14, after tip. The large portions are appreciated. Really wished it all had been yummy. I can't say that it was tasty, and memorably delicious. It looked more appetizing than it actually tasted. Which is not great. The chili was not flavorful, and it was almost cold. Not warmed up first, just slapped on top of the dog. Which made for a strange eating experience. Normally the chili is the hottest part of that particular item. A toasted bun (which is preferable) may have made a difference. The dog itself wasn't terrible. The fries were attractive. I'm into the shoestring potatoes. I was not wowed when it came to the taste. Not a huge deal. I probably should've ordered a slice of pizza, which they may be kind of popularly known for. I hadn't been here in a while, and I noticed they had done some major renovations inside--it looks like a new bar altogether. One downside is that they don't have traditional menus; you have to use a QR code to place your order and make payments. Unfortunately, the system didn't work well when trying to add or delete items from the meal. I had the bacon cheeseburger, and in my opinion, it was just average. The burger patty was quite thin. My girlfriend had the Southern chicken sandwich, and she mentioned that it lacked the spices she would have expected. They only had about eight beers on draft and not many other beer options. However, the bar seemed to have a decent selection of standard liquors. The bartenders and kitchen staff were extremely friendly, which was a highlight. However, the tables lacked condiments, and we had to ask for silverware, salt, mustard, etc. No one came to our table during the meal, so we had to go to the bar for refills. On our way out, we noticed a back room set up for comedy nights, although it wasn't in use at the time. We were told they usually have comedy shows every Friday night and sometimes on Saturday, depending on other events. Friendly, patient and true professional. All staff inviting and on point. Highly recommend a visit and expect to pay $$$ but well worth the splurge. Service charge is 20% gratuity (confirmed with our server) automatically added to the bill for a party of 3. We added 5% more for the great experience! Metered parking (until 6pm) in the lot behind. Because of that, I chose it to celebrate two of my friends' birthdays on April 11. I was genuinely excited to treat them to a beautiful dinner. That's not what happened. From the moment we sat down, something felt off. We had just come from the Alvin Ailey show and were catching up, so we were taking our time. Still, it felt like we were being rushed. The pacing of the food made no sense. The salad came out quickly, which was fine, but before we even started it, two fried dishes hit the table. I asked directly if they were trying to rush us because I've been here many times and that has never happened. The response I got felt dismissive, like I didn't understand how they serve their food. I do. This was different. By the time we got to the fried dishes, they were cold and not good. And honestly, they didn't seem hot when they first came out. That pretty much set the tone. The pasta came later and was also cold. At that point, I asked to speak with the owner. I've met her before when I've come in with my boyfriend and she's always been warm and present. This time I was told she was busy, and while I could see she was in the back of the house, she did not appear so busy that she couldn't step away briefly to address a guest who was clearly disappointed. No one ever came back to follow up. The main dishes didn't recover anything. The cod had no flavor and was cold. The pork chop was tough, fatty, and just not good. It didn't feel like the same kitchen at all. What made it harder to ignore was looking around the room. Other tables were getting a completely different experience. Food coming out properly paced, hot, and with attention. Our table felt like an afterthought, especially after we raised a concern early on. At one point, someone offered to take two dishes off the bill. I appreciated the gesture, but that wasn't the issue. I wasn't trying to get anything for free. I was trying to give my friends a really nice birthday dinner. This is a Michelin-recognized restaurant, which is exactly why I chose it. I've known them to deliver. That's what made this experience so disappointing. It felt rushed, disorganized, and careless. I don't know what's going on there right now, but it was not the same experience I've had before. I won't be going back. PS. Normally I take pictures, but didn't because the food was that disappointing!

A fantastic, unfussy, charming wedding reception venue for a smaller wedding group…read more My now-spouse and I had been struggling to find a good covered outdoor wedding reception venue that fit our budget, allowed external catering, and was small enough for the 50-ish guests we were expecting -- it seemed like every "wedding venue" felt overly fancy and was better suited to a 100+ person group. But then we found Portal! We're not fussy people, and we loved the more down-to-earth vibe of their patio. Plus, it's got heaters and an extendable cover, which was exactly what we wanted! The previous owner, Kevyn, was great to work with, as was the current owner, Mona. We decided to rent the patio and have Portal provide drink service and dishes, but we knew that we wanted a specific restaurant (which doesn't have its own seating area) to provide the food. Kevyn and Mona were both totally down for that, and completely helped us bring our vision to life. There was space for our 50 guests to sit, for the buffet, plus enough space left over for a small dance floor area. Really perfect for our group. Amber, their bartender and events coordinator, deserves a particular shout-out. She worked with my spouse and me to come up with three custom mocktails that fit our taste preferences and even thought of cute love-themed names for all of them! She really went above and beyond for it, having a mocktail tasting for us and even sourcing a non-alcoholic champagne to use for n/a mimosas and in one of the mocktails. It was a wonderful experience, and Amber was a joy to work with. She the one making the mocktails (and alcoholic drinks for guests who wanted them) during the reception, and we heard constant compliments. I imagine we'll be back for anniversary brunches in the future :)

My only question is....WHY haven't I been here sooner?! I…read morewas craving pastrami, so I looked on yelp for pastrami in the area. My mom and I came in around 2pm on Monday (8/11). It's a cute delicatessen/restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. Immediately the staff was so friendly and welcoming. The woman at the register was very nice and asked if we had any questions. My mom and I shared a pastrami sandwich, Brussels sprouts, fries, and slaw. It was reasonably priced for the Bay Area. When they brought the food to the table I was shocked. Everything looked amazing and very appetizing, and the portions were much bigger than expected. Before she brought the sandwich over, she asked if we were sharing it and was so nice to split it into 2 plates for us. That was very kind for her to do. Let's start with the French fries. Omg they were perfectly crisp but still fluffy on the inside. They had so much flavor probably because of the beef tallow and had just the right amount of salt on them. There was a side of mayonnaise with the fries, and it tasted homemade. I meant to ask them if it was. It was very good lol I couldn't get enough. The poppyseed slaw was very refreshing and it was tangy and sweet. We loved that the cabbage remained crispy and it was great for a warm day. The fried Brussels sprouts were full of flavor. They were a nice balance of sweet and salty. I loved the bacon on them. The hot pastrami sandwich definitely satisfied my pastrami craving! There was just the right ratio of meat-cheese-sauerkraut-mustard-dressing. The bread tasted freshly baked as well. It was full of flavor. And the side salad that came with the sandwich was excellent. We loved the tanginess of the dressing. We were shocked that there wasn't more people inside, but also for 2pm on a Monday, it probably was just an off hour. We had so many leftovers as we both don't eat very much, but lol as soon as I got home I started eating some more of the slaw and salad. Can't wait to eat the rest for lunch tomorrow. We are already planning on coming back to try the meatballs next time and definitely trying their Indian cuisine! I'll have to bring my husband here next. Thank you guys for an amazing lunch!

It's a warm, crunchy roll, the chopped steak and cheese are perfect, and there's a salad next to it so you can take a bite of that while you're waiting for the next bit of your sandwich to cool down. Do yourself a favor and order this in instead of carrying it out. The roll is warm and crunchy and I think too much time in a bag would make everything less delicious. (I'm sure it's still good, it's just *better* if you can eat it when it's fresh.) I swear one of these days I'll try something else on the menu.

Modern, airy, and open concept. Their Honors West Coast IPA is excellent. I would come back just for this. I ordered a lettuce wrapped The Dude burger with cheddar and mushroom. Yum! Nice presentation as well. Only disappointment is that they no longer have a parking lot :( What a great place to just hang out and chill. I'll definitely be back. Okay, I'm still here, ha, ha, ha... The inside has a nice modern look and there is a lounge to the side open for happy hour. We sat in there which has its own bar. It is very cozy. My husband ordered a Caesar salad and I ordered the French Onion soup with a bacon grilled cheese. Our waiter started off well but when he came to get our orders he didn't write anything down and I had to repeat myself twice. The first time he was facing my husband, the second he came to my side and I pointed at the menu while slowly repeating my order. I simply wanted a grilled cheese with bacon added no avocado as it is advertised as an add on, on the menu. As he walked away a part of me knew my order was going to be messed up. Low and behold my soup arrives with a side of bacon. I then explained again what I ordered. A few moments pass and he comes back and then my husband explains what I wanted. I'm not sure if it was a language barrier but it just didn't seem to register. I truly did not think asking for soup & bacon grilled cheese would be so difficult. By this time my husband had already received his salad which was delicious. Finally, he comes back with my soup, a grilled cheese and the bacon ON THE SIDE. If I ordered a bacon grilled cheese why would you give me like this? Why not make my grilled cheese and add the bacon inside? To make matters worse the French onion soup was so bland not even salt could save it. It tasted like a nothingness broth. The grilled cheese was better once I made it myself. The waiter never came back to check on us. The manager hovered by for a while but we had to even flag him down for the check. I left hungry and got a meal at the airport. Would not recommend. If you can't remember an order as a waiter please just write it down.

For my main entree I split a beet salad with one of my colleagues, I can't say no to a beet salad. Then I ordered the mussels...which were so good. I loved the aioli on the top of the fries. I also had a bite of my colleagues coleslaw...and I will say it was the best non mayo based coleslaw I've ever had! Not kidding! It has red onion, green pepper, and cilantro. For dessert since it's always a must on a biz trip, we ordered crème brûlée and a sorbet. The brulee was as expected and perfect to end the night. Will definitely be back!
