Dr. Kuwamura is an amazing doctor. He works with you as the patient in determining what you're willing to have done through discussions giving options to think about. Five years ago he recommended a conservative approach to solving my spinal issues and began by referring me for pain management which was effective for a year. Next, he implanted a spinal neurostimulator to reduce pain which was effective for four and a half years. Today he performed MITR (minimally invasive tubular retractor) lumbar microsurgery to remove herniated parts of lumbar discs that are pressing spinal nerve roots. Based on just a few hours post-recovery, I feel very optimistic that it was effective in lessening the radiculopathy (nerve pain) progressing down both legs. These Doctor did my husband's surgery and Dr.Kuwamura is a great doctor, my husband's surgery was great. But his office staff are so unorganized before the surgery I had to called them every day to get information and clear instructions, well today my husband had an appointment scheduled at 8 am which originally was a telemed appointment well the office staff called to confirm the appointment telling my husband to be at the doctor's office at 8 am, my husband called again to re-confirm that it was in fact a face to face appointment since he has another appointment at 10 am about 30 minutes they told him yes to come in to the office well we made it to the office just for them to tell us that the staff was in training and we had to wait 30 minutes or we can reschedule for a telemed appointment. The lack of communication and consideration is frustrating. read more

I wrote a rather lengthy review on Dr. Kuwamura. So lengthy that it won't fit on Yelp. You can read my full review on my blog at this link: http://wp.me/pqDEf-fx . I'm posting the jest of it below. First, I must mention that I felt it necessary to include my entire ordeal and experience with the 3 other doctors listed to show and prove just how good of a doctor I believe Dr. Kuwamura is. If you aren't concerned with background, jump to the end - no hurt feelings! Surgery is scary. Plain and simple. But when you are in constant pain for 4 years, you come to the realization that surgery might be necessary - as was in my case. Starting in 2003 I had severe back pain. I started seeing a chiropractor when the pain started but after a few weeks of no relief she took x-rays and noticed degenerative disc disease. Although the chiropractor suggested continued chiro care, the word 'disease' scared the heck out of me so I promptly made an appointment with my family practice doctor. That doctor took one look at my symptoms and referred me to a neurosurgeon (NOT Dr. Kuwamura) and that's where nearly 4 years of hell started. To make it short, I spent a wasted year working with a neurosurgeon, a former military doctor that told me that I'd never be able to perform any type of high impact exercise again and suggested that I take up swimming for the rest of my life. REALLY?!? I was 23 years old at the time and before the onset of my pain I ran 5ks, mountain biked, water skied and lived a highly active lifestyle. He prescribed physical therapy and sent me on my way. I did physical therapy and then went to a new doc, a pain management specialist where I started receiving epidural injections every 3 to 4 months - that is not the life I wanted to live. Next, I decided I'd go to the "experts" at the Texas Back Institute in Plano, TX. By the end of my visit, I was submitting insurance paperwork to have a disc replace surgery. This request was denied by my insurance company and once all of my appeals were denied, I felt like I was dead to this new doctor. Then I found Dr. Kuwamura. From the time I entered Dr. Kuwamura's presence I felt comfortable with him and his abilities. I already knew that he had a respectable education and experience, but what I didn't expect was a warm, candid, caring attitude. Dr. Kuwamura took the time to listen to all of my previous treatments, answer my questions and even asked what my goals were for coming to him. I explained that I wanted to live like a 26 year old not an 80 year old and he told me he completely understood - and I believed him. He explained how he had once been a runner (he even completed Boston if I remember correctly) and that he had previously had a spinal fusion surgery to correct an issue very similar to mine. WOW - someone who had been through it and who was concerned with what I wanted - I had hit the jackpot of doctors. On that first appointment he recommended a spinal fusion at L5-S1, explained the surgery, the pros and cons, and the possibility of it not correcting my problem. He covered all bases, good and bad, and I respected him for that. He then went on to tell me of experiences he had with patients similar to me (young, in good health, in decent shape) and how they had handled the surgery and recovery. I was convinced that I needed to take the chance on surgery and started the scheduling process immediately. I continued epidurals and facet injections until my surgery date. December 7, 2007 changed my life. I woke up from the surgery without back pain, but with stomach pain - let me explain...Dr. Kuwamura used an approach called ALIF (A = anterior) meaning he operated on my back by going through my stomach! This reduces the trauma to large back muscles and speeds recovery. From that point forward I rapidly progressed through my recovery. I spent 5 days in the hospital under scrupulous and extraordinary care. After that, my recovery continued at home. I continued to see Dr. Kuwamura at certain intervals and at each visit he ensured all of my questions were answered...even taking the time to print x-rays for me so that I could explain my healing process to friends and family. Since my surgery I have been virtually pain-free. After about 6 months I was able to return to non-impact exercise and after evidence of solid fusion (about 12 months) I was released to all normal activities (running, jumping, core exercises, etc.). Since my surgery I have run 8 half marathons , 1 full marathon and 1 sprint triathlon. I am in the best shape of my life and owe Dr. Kuwamura part of the credit for "fixing" me and making me whole again. I cannot say enough about how thoughtful Dr. Kuwamura was throughout my entire ordeal - both professionally as a doctor and as someone who genuinely cared for my well-being. I never felt (or feel) rushed when I see him and I'm thankful that I found him. read more

Worst experience! Office staff is rude and inconsiderate. Don't call you back when they say they will. Sends you to the most expensive place for physical therapy and MRI, of which I had to call Nicolette 3X to get her to send the order over! If you are in pain and need immediate help do not go here! Maria who schedules surgery is rude and argumentative, lacks compassion and empathy. They lie about call backs; telling me Maria, who is on vacation for a week, is going to call me back tomorrow! Told them I wanted the surgery and after a month of trying to schedule it, still couldn't get them to give me a date and time. They never give you a time, just a day they told me! Surprised he doesn't have some board complaints from people who couldn't get treatment in time and are now permanently damaged. I never saw another sole in his office waiting. Must not have many patients. read more

I too had a very similar diagnosis as Jennifer T. Degenorated disk disease with herniation L4-L5 & L5-S1. I too opted for ALIF and almost 2 years later I've have no regrets. This is a major surgery in my book and it takes time to heal but it was worth it. I'm 44 now and it was the best thing I could have done, it gave me back a quality of life I didn't have before. I read the reviews about staff but keep in mind staff ain't the ones that are going to fix you. read more

Dr K is a great doctor and skilled surgeon.He told me on a previous visit I needed a minimal laminectomy.I went back a month later after the symptoms worsened to see if it could still be done.He said yes&asked if I wanted to schedule then.I said I would call the next day to schedule it.Did that,was given Maria's voicemail, left a message.Again 2 days later.Went in person 3th day.On phone couldn't talk.8 messages left in all,no call back.Total waste of time.Bye-bye Dr.K. Please get better staffing.I went to another highly recommended spine doctor instead who will do this surgery and a multilevel fusion on my neck.Very poor service is very costly. read more

Dr. K performed two surgeries on me. A microdiscectomy then a fusion of the L4-L5 & L5-S1 discs. After surgery I had the normal pains and was afraid that it would always hurt. But now, just over two years later, I am hiking and swimming way more than I did previously and with almost no pain. The fusion was billed at over 100k yet with my insurance I paid about $1,000. I will eventually need more surgeries and Dr. K is the only one I want touching my back. read more

Dr. Kuwamura gave me my life back! Great staff, nice office, you will immediately feel comfortable and well taken care of. After 14 other surgeons said no, he was the first to say yes. I have degenerative disk disease, spondylosis, femoral narrowing, etc. etc. etc. If there is a problem, I have it! I had 3 destroyed disks in my neck, and 4 in my lower back. I was planning to get my lower back done first, but a vertebra in my neck slipped, making it impossible to function, the pain was unreal. Dr. K immediately got my insurance figured out, scheduled an operating table, and fixed my neck. One hour after waking up, I was up walking around, pain free, making the hospital staff quite nervous. I would already have my lower back operation scheduled with him, but unfortunately I have to wait for a year. Believe you me, I will have him do my next surgery as well! read more

I was referred to Dr. Kuwamura about 2 months ago. Taren called me right away and was asking to schedule me. I was paying out of pocket so at the time, Taren said I could get my CT scan before I saw the Dr. rather than pay for two trips since I would probably need a CT anyway. Had trouble getting CT because needed referrals from in network Dr so I changed my insurance to one that includes Kuwamura as well as the CT place. Got my CT finally and called Kuwamura to schedule. Now a new girl, Melissa, tells me they can't schedule me without having notes from prior surgery. Doesn't even need the CT scan, just prior surgery notes. Ok. So I get those and she says it will be a couple days. A week goes by and she tells me she's not sure why they haven't reviewed it. Eventually, 2 weeks later, we get a hold of Taren. We have been trying to get back in touch with her many times up to this point since she was the one who started the process with me. No one ever calls back and Melissa could never do anything. Was a complete struggle ever getting a hold of someone and when you do it wasn't helpful. So anyway, we get a hold of Taren and then the next day, get a call back saying the Dr finally reviewed the prior surgery notes and won't see me. He doesn't say why and they don't elaborate at all. So 2 months go by, I do every thing they ask and then this. The least he could do is tell me a brief reason why, to help guide me to who I should be trying to see. I mean, should I see a different kind of Dr or is it just him personally that can't help? Then Taren denies that she ever told me to get a CT scan. Even though she told me and my primary Dr. but she denies that. So this Dr and their staff obviously have no human compassion. For all I know, I might spend another few weeks trying to see another Dr just to be denied. Dr. Kuwamura should tell me why he can't see me or can't help me. I am in chronic neck pain and it has only been getting worse. It is crazy that the office and this Dr would treat me this way. He doesn't seem like someone who actually cares about a person. Only if he can operate on them. So now I will keep suffering and try to find another Dr and have no idea why this one denies me. I hope Dr Kuwamura and the office staff read this and at least feel bad. To you it's a job and to me it is a very serious life situation that you just wasted two months allowing my neck pain to get worse and leaving me with no information to help me know what kind of Dr might be able to help me. The only thing Taren told me was to go back to my primary and have them find me another Dr. Really? My primary referred me to you and you didn't tell us why you can't help. So my primary doesn't have any new info either. They just don't get it. No compassion and can't see this situation from a patients perspective. read more

Dr Kuwamura is excellent, very personable and professional. He is very easy to talk to and thoroughly explains your situation to you. Disk between L4 and L5 ruptured about a month ago which caused intense pain. After an ER visit and hospitalization for a day, Dr K operated. Pain was caused by a piece of the rupture being on my L4 root nerve which he successfully removed. I am doing great. My experience with Dr K and his staff was outstanding. read more

This is without a doubt the worst back doctor I've had the displeasure of meeting. The face of the company is p.a. jose. Who walks and talks like a dr but isnt. He'll set you up for tests that you dont need and send you for MRI's at clinics that kuwamura has business interests in. Which cost three times as much as other places. They just want your money. Plus they also messed my fmla paperwork. Which a had to pay another doctor to complete. So i ended paying twice for. If you care about your back and your money then stay very far away. read more
