I was played like a fool by the nice people at MDI import. I came from Portland my car over heated. I added fluid and brought it in the next day. I also asked for an oil change and to check the break lights. 5 hours of labor later I got my car back Oh. They never found the problem for the overheating. Theu did have to fix a wire for the break lights and somehow that took 1.5 hours. I really feel like they took advantage of me because I was from away. Context: I called them at 1 on a Friday under duress because I needed to leave at 7 AM Friday to get a friend back to Logan airport in Boston in time for her flight. One of my wheels was making the most unholy sound a car wheel has ever made and another shop in town told me that my rear break pads had worn down via a quick glance. Said shop said they couldn't help me because they had too much scheduled that day and, even if they didn't, there was no way they could get the parts in time. Panic. I called MDI Imported Car Service and they couldn't have been more amenable. They checked for the parts, had them, and said they could have it done that afternoon! Hooray! In the end, they found that my break pads were actually fine (Suck it, in town guy!) and, as my wholly unprofessional ear had suspected, there was a stone lodged in my FRONT wheel. They gave me the stone, didn't try to shyster me out of any more money, and I got out of there for well under $100 when I was expecting much more damage. Bonus: It's only 1.5 miles down the road from the Atlantic Brewing Company, so I took a walk and a brewery tour while my car was being serviced. read more

I can't say enough nice things about this place. We had to replace our radiator on a trip to Maine, and the shop that did the work was horrible...they didn't clamp a hose back on to the engine (and broke off our transmission dipstick but didn't bother to tell us, among other things). As a result, the car kept stalling out, and we limped into Mt Desert Island. Jason diagnosed the problem over the phone just from my description, and was so nice and professional. He had us ready to go in under half an hour, and the price was so reasonable. I really felt that he cared, and it was so refreshing to find such an honest, reputable shop. My Land Rover's turbo gave up the ghost while I was summering in Northeast Harbor, Maine. As we were driving to Bar Harbor on Friday evening when the engine warning light went on. We took our Toyota to MDI Saturday morning. MDI Imported Car Service read the engine codes and determined that the the warning light came on due to a peculair set of driving circumstances and that it was not due to a serious engine problem. Summering in Bar Harbor, Me., 8 hours away from my Porsche Dealer in NY. Wife locates MDI Imported Car Service on line. Thumping sound until her seat when I accelerated up any hill on the Island was frightening....read the only 3 reviews, 2 from 2012, last one is August 2013 and is most encouraging. Monday morning Dave says bring it over, if a lift is free when you get here, we'll take a look at it. Free lift, inspection reveals big repair Con drive shaft required, parts not in stock. Couple of phone calls, locate complete assembly in Calif. I ask him how much to overnight part, pay the extra $80 to do so. Dave and Jason are leaving Thursday night for big fishing Labor Day Weekend, schedules me for next week cause this week's schedule is already fixed. In Dentist's office to replace bridge that fell out of my head Sunday night, tough weekend, cell rings, it's Dave, it's done. Part came in, he and Jason said what the hell, and just did it. $500 less than dealer ball parked repair for me. Brought a case of " Long Trail's Double Bag " thank you for the fishing trip. Amazing men, wonderful to talk to about what needed to be done, showed me the trouble when the car was up, and the finished repair. I couldn't be happier, all within 27 hours. My Volvo died and MDI was recommended. Dave gave me a loaner car to drive back home and assured me they would find the problem and call me. I got a call before I got home I live an hour away. I needed a new throttle body. They were able to get the part and install it for much less than the dealer would Ave charged. I just had to take it to the dealer afterwards so they could code the software for the new part. It was well worth the extra trip. My car runs great now. You would never know it's twelve year's old. I am new to Maine and very happy to have found someone reliable and reasonable to work on my car. Omg!! 1hour away from Bar Harbor (from Boston area) and fairly new car starts acting up...found MDI and Dave on line, what a sweetheart! He was swamped but took the time to reset the codes, put in a water neutralizer and change our fob battery! In each instance, the service has been prompt, friendly and reasonably priced. The Owner, Dave White goes out of his way to help even if it doesn't earn him work. I'm afraid of sounding like the other reviews--we were vacationing in Bar Harbor when the car decided to break down (running very rough) on Memorial Day. Of course nothing was open and we had no idea where to get a BMW repaired anyway. I found MDI Imported Car Service on Yelp so off we went to see where they were, then went back to our cottage to wait for opening time the next day. We arrived just as Jason was opening and he immediately read the code on the car, said what he thought was wrong, verified it with a simple test and went inside to try to track down the needed coil. He found the part and said he would have it in the afternoon and that we could drive the car back, but not to push it. Around 1 PM he called and said bring the car back. It was fixed quickly once we arrived. The car is running perfectly now, Jason was unbelievably helpful and nice, David was there in the afternoon and amused us while we waited. I immediately recommended MDI to our landlady for her car, as she spends 6 months at a time in Bar Harbor. The price was fair, the service excellent and I might consider planning for my annual service here the next time we come up. read more

This place is one the BEST auto repair shops I have been to. Called MDI up the day after memorial day. My girlfriends car/steering wheel was shaking when she went over 60mph. Initially, I dismissed the problem as a common old car problem. However, once I drove the car I realized it needed to be looked at before we left Acadia to drive 8 hours home. We didn't expect to find a place which could check out the problem in time but luckily Dave, who owns MDI, was able to help us out. He told us to bring the car in and he would have a look at it. Turns out it was a minor problem which another car repair place had been unable to correct prior to our vacation. I hadn't driven the car at this point so I didn't think it was a big deal to take the car up to Maine. Once we arrived we were greeted by Dave who was nice and professional. The car was looked at and fixed within an hour. MDI is a lifesaver!! If I ever need car repairs in this area again, I know where to go. The cost was roughly $100, I don't remember the exact amount but it seemed like a great deal! We also had great conversation with Dave about the current state of healthcare system in the US and politics. Overall, great experience. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Find some where else! Elsworth is not that far away and has options. There is another place also in Bar Harbor. We add the same experience as the person who did the review in July. Only I was try to get my daughter's car fixed as she is a college student there at COA and we are over 1,000 miles away. She needed 4 tires, an oil change. She also told us the fuel gauge didn't seem to be working right. Took the car in on a Weds and they said they would call us. We told them that she needed to drive home the following week, would that be a problem at all? No, not at all they said! Never heard back from them. I called Saturday and the owner stated "Hugh, I guess we never call you? If you want we can call and order tires." NOT a good sign. I asked how much, and he said $120 all inclusive, labor, ect. Told me he would call that same day on Saturday on when the tires would come in. NEVER heard back that day. I called on Monday (the are closed Sunday.) Worker said, "Yeah, we have the tires and are working on it. Should be done by Tuesday." (How long does it take to change tires and an oil change? I would painfully find out.) I asked "Can you give me a price or estimate for the total costs?" Nope, only the owner can do that and he is out. Never head back again. Called Weds as I begin to worry my daughter is now not going to have her car in time to go home, and/or not properly set up by them. I call Weds at noon, and the owner states he is surprised my daughter hasn't come to pick up the car yet!!! I explained, again, that I was waiting for him to call me as we still didn't have any idea how much any of this would cost. He knows he has me over a barrel at this point. Total out the door cost??? $771 for 4 tires, an oil change, they checked and cleared the codes and found nothing wrong with the fuel gauge. at least $150 of unexplainable labor (at least) AND 7 days later... After I explain to him I did not believe it was fair, or what he quoted, for this work to be anywhere over $700, but realizing he had us over a barrel, he agreed to knock off a wopping 1/2 hour of labor for a total of $738... I asked if he would consider $698... his response was that if I wanted my daughter to be able to pick up her car, it was going to be $738... are you KIDDING me? That's your response? Frankly, every time I talked to him, it felt like he was "stoned." No sense of urgency, no communication, but recognizing he could play us. read more
