While recently on vacation in Bar Harbor the transmission on my Tahoe crapped out on me. He also reached out to a local transmission repair shop to see if they could help. Our daughter is currently in Bar Harbor working at the local retirement village for a 6 month internship. Last Thursday evening her car left her stranded after the transmission hose/line broke. Bob got her car fixed ASAP, checked and filled all fluids, and gave the car a good look over before getting it back to her by weekend's end! I can't enough good things about this shop, although I think the mechanic that helped me has moved South. Hopefully, his customer service will carryover. My check engine light came on as I was driving into Bar Harbour. My car was towed to the shop and repaired quickly and efficiently. After talking to me, he thought the problem was a spark plug and engine coil and he was correct. Parts were brought to the shop and repair was done. One of my best automotive experiences ever. My 2011 MDX died in Acadia on a Sunday in an area without cell service at the start of our last week on the island. It took me all of Monday to get the car to them and although fully booked, Steve offered to fit me in and Bob used the time to preemptively order parts. When I called on Tuesday regarding progress, the job was already done! Bob is an excellent diagnostician, as my issue was not an ordinary alternator failure and he patched a leaking tire while he was at it, all for a reasonable price. Couldn't ask for more. My only regret is that he isn't near my home to do the rest of the repairs the car needs! read more

Don't go here!! I asked for my tires to be balanced and rotated. They put both of my front tires on in the wrong direction of travel. AND they didn't even balance them. I had to remove the front tires myself and put them back in the correct direction, and will be bringing my car elsewhere to actually get it balanced. Who knows what damage was done to the tires while I was driving with them in the wrong direction, before noticing their error a few weeks later. read more

They were my life saver. My car died in Bar Harbor, 500 miles away from home and I could not get the car running. My alternator has failed and there were only few in stock in Maine. Bob, the owner, and Mike, the mechanic who worked on my car, are one of the nicest and honest people I have ever met. They treated my car as a priority and had my car fixed in a day. Bob's is a rare find: competency and honesty. My engine light came on while we were on a cross country driving tour for the summer. I had just had my car serviced at a Jiffy Lube and wondered if it was somehow connected. Bob hooked my Nissan Versa up and researched the code and then cleaned out the air filter compartment of the new, lesser quality air filter that had been installed by Jiffy Lube. He cleaned contact points and reset my motherboard and informed me that my car had a manufacturer's alert about warning light issues. He charged me almost nothing and then discovered that one of my tires was in need of replacement soon and I would probably have an issue somewhere on the remainder of my trip. He suggested a wonderful place for me to buy a new tire at an honest price. Bob was wonderful and is a vanishing treasure of American pride in workmanship. read more

My wife's car refused to start while vacationing in Bar Harbor. AAA had it towed, but unfortunately the towing service brought it to the incorrect "Bob's", and we lost half a day having to have it towed to the correct Bob's. Once there, we immediately received a call that they were in possession of the car, and would look at it as soon as possible. We then received a status report at the end of the day. Holly explained that parts were ordered so that work could commence first thing in the morning. Repairs were complete by 10 am, and we received a call to let us know we could pick it up. Holly greeted my wife and I with hugs, and introduced us to Steve, our mechanic. While my wife settled up with Holly, I went over the troubleshooting and repair with Steve, who was super accommodating while also confidently communicating the steps he went through. My wife and I could not be more impressed with the service we received, fitting us in immediately and solving our problem in short order. I wish we had such a great crew available to us closer to home. read more

Sadly, my battery died while watching the sunrise on the Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park. Luckily, I was in one of the few areas in the park that has cell service. After AAA jump started my car and I got back to my rented cabin, I looked online for Auto Repair shops in Bar Harbor. Bob's Auto Repair came in highly rated for their friendly demeanor and the help they provide to vacationers in a pinch. I called and spoke with a super nice person who said he could have a battery for me by 2:30 PM this same day and it would only take about 10 minutes to replace it. He told me the cost which I saw online was average for this work and part. As I drove to Bob's Shop, it reminded me of my back home auto shop, located in a rural area and truly giving the appearance that the people who work here must LOVE their work environment. It was laid back and friendly. There were some locals who just stop by to chat and others who make this a regular place to check in and have their cars tinkered on. Just as was promised, my battery was there and they replaced it within 10 minutes. I really loved the down home feel of Bob's Auto Repair and the friendly atmosphere. I chatted with the mechanic and the locals hanging around. It was just a great experience that came out of a very frustrating event of needing a battery while on vacation. Our vehicle developed brake problems on day one of our trip. Based on reviews, I brought it to Bob's. Bob wasn't around, but one of his technicians took a look at it. After 30 seconds inspection, we were told we needed entire rear break replacement - pads, rotors, calipers, etc., and that the parts would take about 5 days to arrive. We were looking at over $1,000 in repairs. We called our regular mechanic who was skeptical of the extent of repairs needed. We realized we still had a roadside assistance plan in effect and called them. They would tow our vehicle to nearest dealer for our make of car. The car was towed and it was determined that one of the brake pads had gone bad - total repairs came to $350, including a machining of the rotors (not replacement). I don't know what to make of our visit to Bob's - either out of their depth or they found it easier to replace everything or was it something else, but this was not a good experience. read more
