Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

The smell in the air of the pine and forest are worth every penny. Each room has a private deck with table and chairs overlooking the forest behind the lodge. Inside the main lodge is beautiful and clean, with a pool table and games upstairs. They also have cabins for rent and an entire house for larger groups. The cost is better than the hotels in town, and for the privacy and quiet, this is the only experience worth paying for. But if you need something, town is only a couple minutes drive. My sweety and I spent our evenings during by the pond, listening to the fountain and looking at the stars. The people here have been incredibly polite, friendly, and as helpful as you could ask for. I understand that ownership has changed hands in recent months, so don't give any heed or negative reviews. These people are not the same. Fantastic place! We HIGHLY recommend staying here. The rooms were clean, updated, and spacious. I liked that they provided dishes for guests to use, both glasses and silverware (which is nice because at most places you have to stab someone to get this). Our suite included a huge hot tub style bath, although water pressure could of been better to fill this faster. The views from the balcony were nice, even if you were watching some of the locals down the way get buck wild drunk and light fireworks off while it is still a couple months until 4th of July. All in all, I would definitely visit here again. I had no problem with services, but would note that if you're from a larger city and visiting here expect small town hospitality, they wont treat you like you're the King of England. Intend to visit again for some R&R.

Let me first say, I'm not generally a fan of B&B's. My generalized experience has been that I feel like I'm intruding on all of the stuffed animals that have taken up residence in a bedroom. Being a man, I generally feel out of place and confused about where to sit, and what exactly I'm allowed to touch. In the case of the Cambridge House, I actually feel like I'm at home. The house is beautifully appointed and recently renovated, so it has all of the charm of the 1916 Craftsman that it is, without all of the pains of scalding water and creaking walls that I've come to expect from older homes. There are many cozy nooks in the house and finding a nice place to read a book is a true pleasure. Breakfast is prompt, tasty, and simple and the proprietor, Sheila, is a gem. It has some nice modern conveniences like free WiFi that make it easy for me to get work done while up visiting family. There are five lovely rooms, some pictures of which I have posted here. The rates are ridiculously reasonable. In short, if you're in this part of the world, this is the only place worth staying within 100 miles. We've been coming up here for almost ten years to visit family and we've tried every hotel and B&B within that distance. This is without a doubt the finest accommodation in the area, and is in a beautiful setting with some nice walks in all directions. Highly recommend anyone traveling through, or looking to get away for a quiet weekend. You won't regret it!

We will definitely return for the outstanding staff and beautiful hotel!! My one small recommendation would be if they could have a drape or a shade put up on their big picture window in room 212 that leads out to the balcony . It is lovely to look at the lake, but when you're trying to sleep in the living room, it might be a little bright in the morning for some people who sleep on the pull out couch. A shade on that window would be helpful. We will return to this beautiful place!!

They could be a bit more generous with their soap, shampoo, etc...as we had to ask for more soap the first day. Most hotel rooms have small fridges but not here. We really could have used one.
