So a few days ago, I was craving Carl's Jr. Yes, it's been nearly a decade but I still remember the taste. It was smokey and juicy and a decently sized burger. Unfortunately, I knew this craving was never to be satisfied again as this country hasn't seen a Carl's Jr. branch in AGES.
Luckily, I found a good substitute.
Meat Up! is a curious combination of burger joint and kebab place. While they offer quarter pound burgers and half pound burgers, they also have things like beef koobideh and chicken kebabs... most for under 100php. If it does go over 100, you can bet they're fairly large servings of whatever you ordered. Those are pretty good student prices right there. I have to admit though, I had my doubts about their burgers but when I saw that patty being grilled over open coals... all my doubts disappeared. The beef was seasoned wonderfully and the fact that they grilled it instead of frying it made for a juicier burger with that smokey flavor I'd been craving for. My only qualm was that the cheese wasn't cheese but cheese sauce. One tiny blemish in an otherwise wonderful burger. They have shakes, too. While cheap, I can't say they're as mindblowing as the burger. It's good to know that they use fresh fruit and milk though instead of powdered flavors.
I'm not really sure when Meat Up! opened but I'm glad it did. Either way, I predict good things when the school year starts.
Protip: this is an outdoor joint so don't expect any AC. All dining is outside on the curb. While it wasn't crowded when I went to get dinner, it may get a bit more crowded for lunch once school starts. Also make sure to keep an eye out for Mawmaw, an orange cat with the biggest eyes. read more
