I've been using Mike for almost 30 years, and he's solved problems on difficult cars that other mechanics, even dealerships, were not able to figure out. He's conscientious, and understands the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, engine design, electrical systems etc. He's fixed cars of mine whose brand he has no experience with, just by applying fundamentals. Many dealership-trained mechanics are working from a Step A, B, C picturebook shop manual, and know nothing about cars. Since I really do not know much about my Honda Accord (or cars in general), I need to enTRUST someone with its repair... With my last two automobile issues, I've been fortunate enough to have met Mike at Mechanically Speaking. I'm an extreme loyalist, especially when it comes to big ticket repairs (and spending my hard earned income), and have been going to Reliance Auto on Mission Street in San Francisco for over a decade (my family still goes there and I still highly recommend them). After moving to Bgame, where I live and work, I realized I needed to find someone else just as trustworthy within the immediate vicinity. Being the resourceful lass I am, I consulted with our Operations Manager at work! She informed me that Mike has been servicing all of our agency vehicles (minus the leased Penske big rig) - and it wasn't just because of his convenient location - apparently, our agency has been with him through two of his auto shop moves throughout the south bay and the peninsula. Mike is *trustworthy* - he keeps it real. Sometimes, he drops some technical jargon, but he also has a great way of telling you things in lay terms. I needed serious brake work and thanks to Mike, I feel much safer on the road. FWIW, you really can't put a price on reliability and trust; but... Mike is truly reasonable and will be honest with you every step of the way. Immaculately clean garage. No oil changes or smog checks. That's right, As good as it gets! Mike has been my mechanic for over 20 years. Before knowing Mike I had dealt with the "Volvo expert" on Rollins Road (no longer in business) it was his goal to get $1,000.00 out of me each time I brought the car in for service. The final straw was when I was selling the '85 Volvo, I had brought my car in for a basic tune-up and he did a major service on the car. Mike was recommended to me after that and I have loyally followed him from his shop over by the tracks to his present location. I had 3 years of ROP training and was going to be an auto mechanic myself, and I know first hand it would be hard to find a mechanic that has more knowledgeable than Mike. Even when I had my vehicles new with factory warranties I still consulted Mike for his honest opinion of what he thought was going on with the vehicle. I do not trust mechanics at dealerships and have heard horror stories from friends that have worked at them. Everything from loosening spark plugs to not tightening hose clamps, and selling OEM parts then not using them on your car. Like any other relationship in life you have to build a rapport and over the many years I can honestly say that we have an excellent rapport with Mike. He even helped bail me out of a real mess when I tried to do a modo myself on my Rover.. Took my toyota in because I heard a noise coming from my front wheel. Mike took the time to drive me around to test it to see and hear for himself. Once on the rack he discovered my wheel barring was shot. He went above and beyond to help me! I didn't think I had an extended warranty (I couldn't remember) but he went through my paperwork with me and we discovered I did! And that wheel barring repair was covered by Toyota! I was thrilled! He was so nice to spend that time with me and didn't charge me anything! Talk about great customer service! You don't see that anymore and I wanted to recommend to anyone looking for an honest mechanics shop, that this is the place to go! They will take good care of you! read more

Hard to believe that other Yelpers seemed so enamored by Mike at Mechanically Speaking. Had my $ 40,000 + car there over 3 months when it only needed a diagnostic check. Excuses every week why he "just couldn't get to it". So he starts the car every day and moves it in and out- great for any engine -because he's a little cramped for space, would not put a car cover on it, that was too much work. Mike was very irresponsible and even arrogant about the whole thing. Judging by the cars in his facility, I should have known better-I would not trust him with my lawn mower. read more

This was my first visit and it was a GREAT experience. When I explained my problem to him, he was a good listener and wanted to help me solve my problem. He reviewed the dealer's diagnostic report and recommendations and was able to point out ways to take care of my needs without the outrageous price tag. I have been taking my old 84 Camaro to Mike at Mechanically speaking for over 15 yrs! Whenever I had a problem he would give me a honest idea of what was going on. I totally trust Mike! The first time I ever called him, he immediately knew that my car had a certain kind of radio, not common, lol! I don't drive my car very much and it failed a smog, recently! Very upset that I might have to "surrender" my beloved car...I called Mike.... to ask him what to do? It was decided that I bring my car in, and he would check it according to the smog results it appeared to be something simple. Mike checked the car and with a few adjustments and needed maintenance(oil change)...my car passed! He even took to the smog place for me!!!! I am forever grateful! I would never consider any other mechanic unless I moved from the area! Over the years I've had to have my car towed to Mechanically Speaking after hours. No worries, everything is taken care of. Mike does everything for his clients to make it as easy as possible to get anything done on your car. My car is old/vintage so some parts are hard to get, and Mike has always been forthright what any expenses might be. Mike also has a reverence for older vehicles, he doesn't have that, "its a old car get rid of it" mentality, and he can fix a older car with minimal expense if possible. I can only speak of Mechanically speaking in the highest regard! I trust Mike and he knows all his clients cars, and he will not RIP you off!!!!! I highly recommend Mike. We have been taking all of our cars to Mechanically Speaking for close to 15 years. Mike reminds me of chess masters who remember every game, because he seems to remember every repair that he has done on each of our cars. He is honest and is extremely knowledgeable. When other mechanics don't know what is wrong, they often guess and charge you for the repair, whether it works or not. Mike will tell you he doesn't know, and he'll tell you what to look for so that he will have a better idea when you bring it in again. I don't think you can find a better mechanic. read more

You won't find a better mechanic to service your vehicles. My wife and I have been taking our cars to Mike for about 20 years. He's as honest as Lake Tahoe is blue on a sunny day. We recently needed one of our vehicles serviced and for the heck of it I called two dealerships to see what they charged. After receiving their quotes I called Mike, told him what needed to be done, and his quote for the exact same work was almost $300 less than the dealers. That may not always be the case, but give Mike a call, he does excellent work and he may save you a chunk of change to boot. read more

Mike is awesome. He seems to know everything about the cars he works on and is so honest that I almost wonder how he stays in business. I thought I would put out some good karma for him with a Yelp review to help subsidize his business because he is worth alot more than he makes! I live an hour's drive away but will continue to go to him for anything beyond a standard oil change until he's not around anymore. He is resourceful and explains why things should/shouldn't be done, and will straight-up tell you if something is necessary or not for your car. He actually talked me out of about $1k worth of work on a car I just got and it made sense after he explained why. Also, for women, sometimes mechanics seem shifty or condescending, but Mike dealt with me in a way that I feel he would have dealt with anybody else. Before I even started taking my car there, he spend a half hour on the phone with me helping me figure out what car I should be looking to buy.
