Cancelled service for deceased mother & mailed back the equipment. 3 years later discover that the annual charge was not removed from my bank account. Medical Alert acknowledges receiving equipment but claims a pendant & help button were missing but FAILED to notify me of same and continue to bill. I have had this Medical Alert service since 2019 and there have been equipment glitches along the way, but the main reason I cancelled the service last month is the absolutely horrible phone service. I called various numbers regarding the refund I was to get after returning the equipment and none of them worked. People in "customer care" couldn't get through to the Billing office either, and no one seemed to care. We purchased the best policy and paid $480 for the year on CC, a few months later I found out I was going to be my wife's full time caretaker and decided to cancel, we packed all their equipment and mailed it back, after they received it they refunded $407. at the end of the year they billed us for $480 again, we called and they said ok it's cleared up, but they kept billing us AND we'd call and they said it's cleared up and each time you call they put you on hold for a long time and then transfer you to someone else who puts you on hold for a long long time. Even after talking to as high in the co. as I could go and they said ok we are cleared up, GUESS what now we got a bill five months later for $40.36 saying it is 60 days late, we turned them into the BBB, and tried to do a fraud with the police but so far no help and we are not going to try the phone dance again, don't know where to turn to next read more

My sister's medical alert equipment provided by Connect America West, a subsidiary of Medical Alert, stopped working in early May, 2024. She called the company's 800 number many times over the next few months and requested technical help to fix it. The response every time was a transfer to another extension that always told her to "...leave your number, we will call you back.". NO RETURN CALLS EVER RECEIVED! However, the company kept billing her for the service that didn't work. I got involved recently when the accumulated amount for NO SERVICE and NO CUSTOMER SERVICE was over $500. I am corresponding with the company through USPS Certified Mail to fix the problem and stop the billing. I too have been told to "...leave your number, we will call you back." and have never received a call back, email or any other type of communication from this company. By the way, their email address doesn't work, it's BOGUS. Can I give these wicked people who are guilty of ELDER ABUSE something less than ONE STAR. They really suck! read more

When I first started this service I would have given them 5 stars. The system worked just fine. Great customer service. I've had them about 3 years. A year ago I switched to their system that had fall alert. That did not work out too well I got a lot of false alarms. I went back to the regular service. I then repeatedly kept getting bills for $10 extra to my $30. I think I got that taken care of. Then today I got a call where they were trying to sell me insurance on the equipment that I pay for. I may be switching to a better company very soon. read more

I got this for my elderly mom. When I inquired about it I offered to pay 3 months in advance. They said as long as I returned it within 30 if it didn't work out they would refund me the remainder. THEY Did Not. Said I would of had to pay 6 months. They lied. Also I never got a service agreement They said they mailed it and it's not there fault the post office didn't deliver. I live in California my mom is in NC. This is the worst company. I never heard of paying for something you aren't using. If I could of done zero stars I would of. It is an excellent system but I have written them with a suggestion to improve the product. I have, twice, accidently activated the system in the past six months; and they responded immediately In the first instance, carrying a heavy cardboard box, which pressed against the hanging pendant and activated it. The second was forgetting to remove it at night; rolling over on it at 4:30 in the morning. Both the accessory watch and pendant have detonator buttons that ride along the surface. Easily detonated by superficial pressures unintended. That button should be slightly recessed so that only the insertion of a finger (digital or thumb) can set off activation read more

Bought this for my mom who has dementia. She misplaced the lanyard. We paid for years for nothing and finally canceled. They demanded $383 for the lost equipment after years of monthly payments. Finally agreed to $300. I repeatedly asked for something in writing, confirming that this was all and we owe nothing more. Larry Goldman confirmed repeatedly, assuring me he is a family man and not the typical collector. I paid. Later, we found the device and returned it. I did not ask for a refund. This seldom happens especially when they want to sell something they will contact my mom right away. Their accounting is detrimental to your health they will contact you ..your mom...and write letter after letter about a payment that has already been made. Preying on the elderly is disgusting. When I took over my 91 year old father's finances I saw multiple recurring charges for varied amounts from this company. A $10 monthly, a random charge for $40 throughout the year. After several calls and cancelling the credit card, I was finally able to start receiving invoices. They made no sense and provided minimal information around what the charges are for. Contacting their customer service was of little help. A $399 annual fee, but then also a $120 annual fee. No explanation regarding what these annual fees were covering. Every time I asked for invoices, they kept pushing for it to be automatically paid by credit card. Three years ago, when they called to sell the device to my mother, I spoke to the the salesman and declined the service. I informed him that my mother was going into an assisted care facility permanently. To that, the salesman tried to convince me that my mother would need the device even more while under their care. I explained that with 24 hour nursing and care, his statement is inaccurate, and he should stop trying to scam senior citizens into purchasing unnecessary equipment. I reiterated that we do not want or need the service/device. About a year ago, I received a collection letter for my mother who is still in a care facility. I called Medical Alert and explained the above, and they said they will cancel the account. Today three years later, my mother received a "Termination of Service" warning letter along with a bill for $179.94 due! We never applied for the service, so what happened? Did the salesman enroll us even though we declined? This company is a fraud and I'm in the process of making a consumer affairs complaint, and I'm reporting them to the BBB. After spotting a new six month charge and pulling every piece of proof that I notified discontinuation well within the time I was hit with no record of the equipment being returned. Here are the facts: My mother signed up for Medical Alarm/ Connect America Nov 2011. She passed Nov 2012. I contacted the company in Dec 2012 to inform them of her passing and to inquire about what to do with the unit. MA/CA said that they needed to have the unit back. No problem. I will send it out to them as soon as possible. Even though MA/CA knew she had passed and that the unit had been disconnected, they tried to charge her credit card for $89.85 in January 2013. The charge bounced as we canceled her credit card upon her passing. I ignored it as I had far too many more important issues to deal with than someone trying to collect a bogus charge on a disconnected unit. As a trustee of her estate, there was so much to deal with regarding the dissolving of her estate. Consequently, I did not get a chance to mail the unit back until March 29, 2013. I included a copy of the death certificate, a copy of her contract and a cover letter explaining (again) of her passing and that I was returning the unit to them per the terms of the contract. On July 15, 2013 MY MOTHER received a letter from their collections department that was sent to my home DEMANDING A PAST DUE BALANCE OF $89.85 for the medical alarm unit AND IF SHE DID NOT PAY BY IT BY JULY 25, 2013 (bolded and underlined in the letter), they will disconnect the unit and CHARGE HER $359.40 FOR FAILURE TO RETURN THE UNIT! I blew up! I hit the ceiling with rage! Now they are threatening a dead person with additional charges?! DID THEY NOT RECEIVE THE UNIT AND COPY OF HER DEATH CERTIFICATE?? I immediately got on the phone to the collections department. The young girl apologized for the erroneous communication and deleted the account as we spoke. However, I was still enraged as to the insulting letter they sent to my deceased mother. I was appalled as to the horrendous way they managed their operations. I demanded to talk to her supervisor. The young girl put me on hold for quite a while before she connected me with her manager. I am sure that she took time to warn her as to my anger. While I was sharing my opinion with the manager of the collections department of how half- assed the company was run, I lost my connection with the her but did not know it (I kept talking) until my phone notified me that I had a voicemail waiting. It was the manager on the voicemail. She explained to me that the battery on her headphones died and that we our lost connection. What a pile of crap. Land lines do not have battery powered headphones. And if they do, the user has plenty of warning that the power is almost depleted. What a cop-out tactic to get rid of un happy customers. Her hanging up on me told me that she was not interested in hearing the thoughts of a dissatisfied customer. It told me that MA/CA will continue to be run by morons. Stay away from them! I contacted this company in 2006 for information; after reviewing their products, I decided not to move forward. They have continued to contact me via phone, email and postal mail despite my repeated requests to be removed from their lists. To make these requests, I have called the office NUMEROUS times and they have never fulfilled the request to remove my contact information from their system. By the way, all calls go to sales and there is no easy way to reach customer service. I have held for over 20 minutes then been disconnected by a recording saying they are too busy to take the call. I wonder how good their SERVICE is when you can't even reach an agent. . . I would NEVER do business with them and recommend that you beware. Last year we had this service for my parents. They gave us a "Deal" if we paid it in full we would get a month free. We did that. It was used a total of 2 months. Then they went into assist Living and they are still there today. We sent the equipment back to them They did advise that the equipment has been returned but they then stated that no refund is available. We paid over $450 for the unit. Used only 2 months. We had called to put it on "Stop the service" as no one was living in the home. When we called to see about the refund we are told that they do not give refunds!!!!! They said that they extended the payment to the end of the plan. So because the company does this, the seniors are screwed. We even spoke to a supervisor who was not very nice. I never heard of a company put an extension at the end of a plan instead of assisting the elderly. Watch Out. They are crooks. I would not recommend this company to anyone! Had the service for 1 year. I made the mistake of pre-paying the full year in advance. I wanted the ability for my older parent to be able to summon help, or have someone notified if they fell. The equipment was finicky at best. Monthly testing was awful. The Medical Alert team who answers the phone for their requested testing were no friendly at all. And they are dealing with mostly older folks. Fine, after the year of service, we decided not to renew it. Here come the non-stop phone calls from them, every day and sometimes twice a day. Bill-collector phone calls. When you return the call, you only get voicemail. So here's the deal, even when you may $600+ for a year of service, you don't own the equipment. Got it, then tell that so I can return it. Literally over 70+ phone calls from their bill-collector people demanding to be paid for another full year of service ($600+). My mother in law has been harrassed on the phone for a month about a past due amount. The company has her credit card for billing so how can she be past due? Several calls made on her behalf and she is absolutely correct about this company - they are hard to reach as they are always "experiencing higher than normal phone activity". Very frustrating to the point we returned the equipment today at our cost of $30. We do not trust this company to cancel the account and stop billing, so the request to cancel was made on the phone, by fax and by mail/included with returned equipment. Others have returned the equipment and keep getting billed. They might have great medical alert service, but their customer/billing service is horrible. An elderly person does not need the added stress of dealing with calling this company daily hoping to reach them, then having an unresolved issue after a month. Our CVS Pharmacy promotes Medical Alert, but we will definitely do more research before signin up with another company read more

These people scammed my mother out of nearly $1000 for equipment she returned in 2016. They called her on 10-26-18 saying her account was past due and got $120 by check over the phone. They had been billing her $29.99/month via credit card before my sister stopped them in July 2018. Then somehow they got her checking account number and have been taking from there ever since. Besides $29.99 for 27 months they also got 2 "late" payments of $120 in the last year. They admit what they have done but now want "proof" of the payments being made in order to consider any refunds - they just "met their match" with my banker sister - with her driving the march, Mom will likely get the money back. We will also consider legal action for abuse of the elderly. Wish us luck. read more

I have used this company for over 11 years. Their courtesy, fast response, and caring have always been wonderful. HOWEVER, WATCH OUT WHEN YOUR EQUIPMENT FAILS. I had surgery and was incapacitated for about three months, during time the trouble light on the box started blinking. I called the company and they said it was low battery and they would send another box. The other box arrived but I couldn't bend to plug it in. It sat unopened for months. I called the company once I had recovered and plugged it in. I found I had been charged over $69.00 for not returning the old equipment which she said was "not refundable". The agent was extremely unpleasant and unhelpful. So was her supervisor. An hour later I called back, spoke to a very helpful agent who transferred me to another department. The supervisor I spoke to said to return the old equipment and she would issue a refund and send me a $100.00 gift card. The gift card never arrived. Weeks later a letter arrived with a charge free mail-in sticker for the PO asking me to return the old equipment. I had returned it over two weeks earlier! Still no gift card. I called the company again today. The first agent was unpleasant and unhelpful. I called back and got a perfectly lovely agent, Ellie, who told me the equipment HAD been received and the $100. gift card issued on 2/3/21. She transferred me to a supervisor who would know about the gift card for $100.00 which had never arrived. I was given a call back line. An agent called back very promptly. He said it takes about 30 days to receive the gift card, so Ellie was wrong. I will be calling back at the end of the month to see whether the gift card has been or will be issued. Oh how I wish I had read these reviews prior to contacting this company. I have been trying to get a refund from Medical Alert for almost 6 weeks for a system that would not work. On May 9th I contacted the Medical Alert company by telephone to ask about their Medial Alert Systems for my mother-in-law. On that date I visited with a salesperson about the various systems and charges and advised them at that time that my mother-in-law did not have a land line or a smart phone, but she did have a cell phone and that she lived in a remote rural area so I was concerned about having good service. After giving the salesperson her address I was advised that yes they had service in that area. So I ordered the Mobile Elite System AND PAID $204.00 UP FRONT FOR 6 MONTHS SERVICE for this system. The device was delivered on or about May 15th. We tried all evening to get the system to stay connected with no avail. On May 16th my mother-in-law called the company and they also tried to get the system to work and stay connected and again failed. They told her they would send out a box to return the system to the company and give us a refund. On or about May 18th my mother-in-law returned the device to the company. On JUNE 12th, I called customer service for this company to check on the status of my refund. I was told the system was received back on May 29th and it would take up to 3 weeks for the refund to be processed. On JUNE 20th, 3 weeks from May 29th, I called again to check on the status of my refund and was told that the refund was processed JUNE 12 and would take up to 3 weeks to process. So, what happened from May 29 to June 12???? As of this date I have not yet received a refund. I did try to call again today but was immediately put on hold. So please be aware of this company and their misrepresentation...about 1) service for a remote area, 2) charging immediately without confirming the mechanism works and 3) giving the run around on refunding after receipt of the returned item. BE CAREFUL with this company. We did not sign a contract with them, but after reading these other reviews I am afraid they might continue to charge us. read more

OMG where do I start. My Mom fell and the battery wasnt working. I was blamed for not checking the battery. Hmmm. I did recently check it! The battery cannot be changed so they were 'supposed' to expedite me a new necklace and bracelet. It didnt come. Sooo... called back to see why it wasnt here yet, since my Mom fell again.... I would have given 0 stars if possible. Please STAY AWAY from this company. They are not interested in helping you. It is all about making money. I actually worked for this company for a very short time and I was shocked how many letters they received everyday from people who were trying to cancel their service or who were overbilled. The phone system went in a circle and if you did get connected, they had a whole team of retention specialists who would try to con you in to keeping the service. As they get paid a certain amount for retaining customers, I think they would just resign them up and the customer was right back where they started from. They took my payments for two months and did not post them to my account. They say that I did not pay and I owe. I started calling a month ago, supervisor Yemmy was to call me back. No call. I sent proof of payments to them via email to their billing agents Nadia L. and Robyn C. Nothing. Today Linda in billing was to call me and yep, no call. Every number that I have been using to reach the billing dept. now says, please leave a message. I wrote them to day via their website and will send an official letter in a couple days. My 85 year old parents were using the medical monitoring service and we found out 9 months later that their system was not compatible with their new ATT uverse phone service. So we paid for service for 9 months and no one bothered to tell us our old unit was not compatible with ATT. They said it was up to us to check this out when we switched to ATT uverse. Do you really think that 85 year old people would think to notify them that they changed phone carriers? Supposedly they run monthly checks, but we were never notified of the problem. When I discovered this in May of 2015 I phoned them up to ask for a refund and was told no. Got my credit card company involved and medical alert agreed to credit my parents account for May. We returned the unit and cancelled the service late May. Beginning of June we were charged $59.90 which is double the monthly fee. Our credit card company charged back this charge for us. We were assured we would not be charged again and credit card company blocked Medical alert from charging us. Well, those sneaky rats changed the name of who the charge goes under and charged us double again on July 3rd. I called them back for a 4th time to let them know about this. They claim they changed billing systems. Well, got my credit card company on the phone again with them today to help resolve since no credits on the account yet. Do not do business with this company!!!! We looked on consumer reports and Life Station got great reviews and were $4/month cheaper.
