The reason why we followed her around for years: she's the best. She is kind, knowledgable, and I have never ONCE felt rushed. She is a wonderful person, a caring doctor, and my entire family goes to her. And I later on found out that my in-laws have for years as well! Her nurses are very good as well! Nothing but professional and friendly! The only downside is that the wait time can be a little excessive. But that's because she spends so much time with each patient, so it's totally worth it. You may be annoyed as you're waiting, but you will soon discover that she spends just as much time with you as she does with anyone else. Her office is out of one of the doctor's buildings at St. Alexius Medical Center off of Barrington Road.

I was dealing with an autoimmune disorder, and for years, I can pledge that she is a very kind, good doctor, with good knowledge. I can see she is also knowledgeable in diet and natural healing. The negative comments are either from competition or people who love to criticize, no matter what. Or have some clinical imbalance. She is very busy, because people like it. Most of her patients have been with her for years. Dr. and her staff are always professional. During the time of COVID-19, I was hospitalized for three days. I realized her office did not accept my new insurance. Dr. Shanchuk, without pay, would take care of me for 3 days to make sure I was in good hands. Just because she was my doctor for so long. My adult son loves her, too. Speaks very highly of her knowledge and professionalism. All this can be verified. So, I have no idea how someone can write bad comments about her. No one asked me to write these comments. I just happened to read all comments, and I could not believe.

Despite this being visible in his chart, staff applied standard adhesive tape to his arm. When the bandage was later removed, it tore his skin open, leaving a wound that was still unhealed ten days later and caused him significant pain for several weeks. This was not an emergency situation. He was there for a head CT and was stable. There was no reason his allergy could not have been checked before tape was applied to his fragile, Prednisone-thinned skin. I filed a formal complaint and received a response acknowledging the issue and stating that staff had been educated on allergy documentation. An apology and a staff training do not undo the unnecessary pain this caused my father. Documented allergies exist for a reason. Patients and families should not have to fight to have them respected.

Only downside for me is the cost of care for tests, or things not covered by insurance. (Check out alternative places, like Bright Light Imaging for CT Scans or imaging). The halls and main spaces are kept clean and in order. I especially appreciate the staff in the Breast Care Center. They are very caring individuals. I also find it is a perk to have a nice Starbuck's in the lobby here too, so you can treat yourself to a hot or iced beverage after an appointment. And, this is your reminder ladies (and men) to practice self care and get checked regularly each year. You matter! And this is a nice place to go when care is needed.

Extending over the "Fatal Fifteen" (see blog DrRic Fatal Fifteen) can provide personalized lifestyle directions for the patient IN THE ROOM but makes everyone IN WAITING delayed. Then comes the monthly review from corporate saying I'm not seeing as many patients as the national average so "we'll have to reduce your salary!"? So now being solo without a large corporation/hospital backing me up...I can spend up to 1-1.5 hours establishing the fine details of life and designing a template so we both reduce dependence on prescriptions/surgeries AND ultimately reverse disease. Imagine that: fixing a patient so they don't need to come to the doctor anymore! Bad business model for hospital but I can't shake the innate desire to teach, empower, change and heal. The privilege of providing successful life changes to the community comes at a price; no medical insurance companies want me to fix lives unless I'm working for a large organization! The root word of "physician" is healer SO I would be very careful if your doctor doesn't mention/design changing life habits.

During both appointments, she came across as rushed, dismissive, and lacking empathy. She frequently spoke very quickly, interrupted questions before they were finished, and gave the impression that she did not have the time or patience to engage in a thoughtful conversation. Asking questions--especially about my own care--felt discouraged rather than welcomed. I honestly felt like she was annoyed by my questions and that I was being made to feel stupid for asking them. There were multiple moments that felt condescending. For example, when I asked about ultrasound options for future visits, her response and tone felt dismissive, as if I shouldn't be asking. When I asked for clarification about my condition, she made comments implying I didn't understand or hadn't studied it enough, rather than taking the opportunity to explain in a supportive way. At one point, she said she would "show me again" because I "still didn't have a grasp." When she showed me a visual and handed me a printout of the condition, she essentially said, "read it so you're educated," and the tone felt belittling. When my husband asked reasonable questions--such as whether this condition is "normal" (meaning common) and whether anything could have been done earlier--she corrected his wording on a technicality, saying, "Of course it's not normal, but I see a lot of it." Her responses felt curt and dismissive. She also said, "I've only been her doctor for three months; she didn't tell me she had it," which made me feel like I had done something wrong. I genuinely wasn't aware of this condition because I didn't have any symptoms--so I wouldn't have known to bring it up. While I'm grateful that she identified it now, her bedside manner and choice of words lacked empathy and care. As a patient, I was made to feel small and uncomfortable--more like an appointment she was trying to quickly finish than a person. This was not just my perception; my husband independently expressed concern afterward and strongly encouraged me to switch doctors based on how I was treated. When our session ended, I'm not sure if it was intentional or an issue with the door, but it slammed loudly on her way out. The same thing happened when she came back in and out to give me a printout. I fully understand that physicians are busy and deal with complex cases, but bedside manner matters. Patients deserve to feel heard, respected, and supported--especially when discussing their own bodies and medical decisions. The tone, facial expressions, and overall demeanor during both visits made me feel uncomfortable, rushed, and at times talked down to. It wasn't a good experience overall, and in a sensitive medical setting, comfort and trust matter. Additionally, there was confusion regarding follow-up scheduling. While I was told one timeline during the visit, the front desk later confirmed a different one after checking with the doctor. There was also an assumption made about which provider I should see next, rather than involving me in that decision and getting my input. I gave this provider two opportunities, hoping the first experience was just an off day--but the second visit confirmed a pattern. I still value the clinic overall and appreciate the care from other staff members, but I will need to consider whether I return. If I do, I will request a different provider moving forward. I believe every patient deserves not only competent medical care, but also empathy, patience, and respectful communication.
