My family have been coming to Dr. Coburn since the early 80's, so West Tenth Medical Clinic *is* "the doctor" for us.
Dr. Coburn is a fantastic physician, with a wide range of knowledge as befits a family care practitioner, and a warm and engaging manner with her patients. Some of us she has known since birth (my little brother!), and she really feels like a "family doctor." In my experience, she is aware of the options and alternative treatments available, and she keeps up with current research relevant to family health. She has referred me for specialist care whenever warranted, and when I have come up with a particular surgeon or specialist I want to see for my particular reasons, she is completely willing to refer me as I request. Her choices for specialist referrals on other occasions have been outstanding, without exception.
I was also impressed today when Dr. Coburn found me some Clavulin (an antibiotic that is particularly good for sinus infections). It was first choice of my ENT specialist, but the Safeway pharmacy said it was back-ordered for three months from the wholesalers - and Dr. Coburn found me some at the small, independent pharmacy next door to her clinic and I picked it up right away. Talk about great medical care service :)
The staff at the clinic are likewise great, though you have to be prepared to be put on hold. Every time you phone them. For several minutes, at least. But once you get accustomed to that, it's not that annoying any more. I have dealt with the staff on many occasions (duh) and they are very helpful, and understand well the difference between scheduling a routine followup and "the doctor wants to see me by the end of the week," so I know that they are gifted with significant magical powers, even with a packed-out appointment calendar.
Most importantly of all, Dr. Coburn listens carefully, which is important to me since I have medical training and am able to explain my symptoms more carefully and accurately than the so-called "average" patient; other doctors in other cities where I've lived have sometimes just assumed I don't know what I am talking about and written-off things that ended up being just as important as I had thought they were to begin with - and that wastes my time and annoys me immensely, so I appreciate doctors who start by listening carefully to the reported symptoms.
As an aside on doctors in general: when I used to be a paramedic, can you imagine if I made similar judgment calls on my patients? "Well, he's complaining of chest pain and says his dad died of a heart attack - but I don't think he knows what he's talking about and I don't have a death certificate here, so let's take the slow route to the hospital." Yeah right! So Dr. Coburn definitely comes through with flying colours on that count.
Unfortunately, as with so many things in life, there is a fly in the ointment, the reason this review doesn't get the 5 stars it might sound like it deserves ... Dr. Coburn shares her practice with Dr. Blaxland, whom I refuse to see any more, after she repeatedly refused to prescribe antibiotics for my sinus infections (despite the fact that I was under the care of an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist for recurrent sinus problems which had been confirmed by CT scan).
When I insisted on receiving medical care and not being ignored, Dr. Blaxland ran bogus tests on my throat to "prove" it wasn't a sinus infection; those tests were not medically diagnostic, according to the doctor in charge of the labs, when Dr. Coburn called to investigate the whole fiasco after successful antibiotic therapy confirmed that it was, of course, the sinus infection I knew it to be. Like most "sinus patients," I am well aware of what a sinus infection feels and looks like... which kinda sucks for me.
Ironically, when I went to Dr. Blaxland for another type of infection, she wrote me a scrip for antibiotics without blinking an eye or performing a single test, so it's not just a healthy hesitation to prescribe antibiotics, but a determined refusal to treat my documented symptoms in a medically-appropriate manner. She has a bee in her bonnet about it, and nothing - not even pictures of the inside of my head! - will dislodge it. I explained the incident to the ENT specialist, and he and his team expressed anger and outrage that I was left to suffer for several months without treatment (no joke), and then the specialist gave me his personal email address so I could contact him directly and "never go back to her" when I have a sinus infection.
I know of another patient who refused to be seen by Dr, Blaxland for similarly inexplicable "bee in her bonnet" medical care decisions, so definitely give her a miss and ask for a different doctor. The staff are willing to accommodate the request to not be seen by Dr. Blaxland; trust me on that one. read more
