The first third of the 1/2 mile walking path to the falls was infested with the largest fire ants I've ever seen in my life! We didn't stop walking so they wouldn't have a chance to crawl up our shoes. The pathway was a beautiful walk though, which led to a beautiful, although man-made, waterfall. It was very serene. Well worth the walk to reach there. I did see some people who had reached there from walking from the opposite direction. They said it was a short walk but they had to park on a street. Not sure about entering from that direction. Sighs would be nice indication there's a path up the side of the falls to overlook them from above.

The artwork is handicapped accessible and there is some street parking. The sculptures depict a group of mounted Native Americans crossing the Wichiita River. The legend of their crossing defines where Wichita got its name. This multi-part piece of art is of a Comanche woman, her child, two braves, their horses and a colt set in the natural beauty of rock & flowing water. The woman is testing the river's depth, as the legend tells, and describes it is "waist-deep", which is how "Wee-chi-tah" is translated. The sculptures are bronze and the artist is Jack Stevens. I was only in Vernon for 2 days, but that was one day longer than I was expecting. I enjoyed the…read morelittle town so much I decided to stay over and explore it a little bit. I had just driven nearly three hours from Dallas on my way to Amarillo I decided since I wasn't in a big rush to just take a break. I paid for another night in my room, the little La Fonda Motor Lodge, built in 1947. I had occasion to go to the Post Office and was absolutely enchanted by it. It was built in 1917 and looks a lot like the post office in my mother's home town in Indiana even though that one was built in 1936. I think they might have used similar designs for many years. Why not, if it works? I wanted to explore some of the little town cafes but between the ones that closed early the first day I was there and were closed completely the next day because it was 4th of July, I ended up just getting to try one, the Chicken Shack. It was very good and satisfied my craving for fried chicken not to mention having the best fried okra I've ever eaten. The next morning I ended up having to eat at Dickey's, which was fine except that it's a chain and not a little unique Mom and Pop Shop representing the town. I tried to go to the library but it was also closed both days I was there. It is a fairly modern looking building, built in the mid-70s, to replace the original Library which had been built in 1915 I think. They still call it the Carnegie Library because Carnegie was the one that donated the money for the original building. I was sad to hear the original building had been torn down because those old libraries are so cool. The Main Street is in pretty sad shape with many storefronts abandoned and others that didn't seem to contain thriving businesses. When I researched the town I found that there was a bad tornado that passed through in 1979 and destroyed most of the town. I wondered if some of the dilapidated and downright destroyed buildings that I saw might have been so damaged they could never be used again but were never razed. I got a kick out of driving down a side street and having to slow down and stop to wait for a rooster to cross the road. I couldn't help but think of the old riddle of why did the chicken cross the street and chuckled when I thought the answer was to get out of the way of MaryLou's car! There was a museum in town, the Red River Museum, that I would have enjoyed going to but that too was closed because of the holiday. I may have to stop in this town on the way back to Dallas, LOL. A lot of chain businesses have opened up near the freeway entrance and exits, chain restaurants, mostly fast food, local Walmart, that sort of thing. I got the feeling that this is a town that people used to drive through to go back and forth between Dallas and Amarillo. They probably stopped and bought gas, ate at the restaurants, patronize the motels and bought drinks and food at the stores. Then when the freeway was built it passed by the town and they lost all that business. There is a college in town and that probably provides a certain amount of jobs and Revenue. All in all, I enjoyed my brief stay here. The only downside was that there was a bad storm the second night and in researching whether tornadoes were a possibility I learned about the 1979 tornado and others that have happened over the years that weren't as devastating. I grew up in the Midwest and had to deal with the fear of tornadoes so I didn't like the idea of their possibility here and was ready to get out of town.

Total cost for the pedestrian bridge was $5.8 million, which does not seem too high for the complexity and the amount of steel used. At night, it is lit up for many to enjoy and it. The bridge was inspired by Oklahoma's state bird, the scissor-tailed flycatcher.

It is a small town with not a lot to do, but is close enough to drive to…read moreNorman for OU games, Stillwater for OSU games, and downtown Oklahoma City - Bricktown - for dining and events. Plus, there are a number of places to eat in Edmond. A bedroom community - many people like to come for the small town experience. The growth in the 80's and 90's was so rapid that the 1 High School town had change, and now has 3 HUGE high schools. Plus there is a private Christian School - OCS that is K-12. Education in this city is viewed as good. There are also 2 colleges. For me, the traffic from the growth became too ridiculous, and there became a section of people that had a snooty attitude - and I can't figure out why. This is still small town America, but "money" came to town, and with it, a bit of a superiority complex. But, this doesn't reflect everyone in town! Religion is a big piece of the community in Edmond. The question is not "Do you go to church", but WHERE do you go to church? Lots of the money that came to town also goes to church. That means politics. You can certainly find a house of worship in Edmond, or ANYTOWN Oklahoma. So, if you are looking for a good school and a good church in a small town - and many people are - this is where you land, and why the town exploded in population, and continues to do so. It is a quiet bedroom community away from the city, but not far at all. This is not a town with attractions - but is a town full of - for the most part - very nice people!
