We love Medoc Mountain for a quick getaway weekend. We did some trail walking, geocaching and lots of fire time at the campsite. The bathrooms are always clean. There are sites that have both electric and water. The water source is between two sites so expect to share. They definitely need more sites with electricity. One thing we really liked was they have bundled firewood across from the Host site for $5 a bundle and a box to put the money in. We've been here a few times and really enjoy that it's so close to home. We will definitely be back.

Oh my mission to visit every state park in NC, my husband, dog and I visited amidst the COVID19 pandemic. Thankfully this State Park remained open since it is not heavily used and it was easy to maintain social distancing on trails and in the picnic area on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We hiked the Summit and Dam Site loops. Both are well marked and maintained. Beautiful wooded area along the Little Fishing Creek. The picnic area is a large grassy field, with some shade trees and a huge picnic shelter. Grills are also available. I'd love to go back when the visitors center (and bathrooms) are open.

Nice camping park not too far from Raleigh. Camped for three nights in a nice shady space. Most spaces in this Park have a lot of shade and some privacy. Nice building with flushing toilets and showers with hot water. As previously stated all staff are great. There are trails for hiking and biking. I'm not an avid hiker and thought the medium trails were very easy. But all trails are seriously tree covered so makes for a pleasant walk. There is a creek which cuts through park. And if you have an RV there are lots of powered sites.

Our site for 2 nights was on a little slop but great spot

This is a beautiful park that is out of the way, but that's the great thing about it. There are lots of nice trails that are well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and there are some beautiful views. I love hiking along the creek.

Really nice park. We enjoyed a hike through 2 trails. They have tons of trails to choose from. The ones we choose were fun and would have been fairly easy had we not had a baby stroller. But we made it through. It was super hot out but in the woods it wasn't too bad. Nice and quiet trails. We only ran into one other person the whole time we were out. The covered picnic area is super nice. Big grill available and a huge fire place for fall/winter. Restrooms in the same building. Also a water fountain and water spigot. And for the more adventurous folks, they say there have been several sightings of Bigfoot throughout the park. You can even checkouts the Cryptozoology museum in nearby Littleton, NC for more info on that as well as maps of the park showing where the sightings took place.

    Office with nice clean restrooms.

Last week I was at 3,000 feet hiking the Appalachain Trail at Winding Stairs Gap. This week its Medoc Mountain State Park at 325 feet. But still it was a nice outing on a cool Christmas Eve while everyone else is consumed with last minute xmas activities or wrapping gifts. My gift was a summit trail and complete outdoor serenity. 10 miles off I-95 going towards Virginia. If you want to hike and likely not see another soul (unlike Umstead), then drive up to Medoc for privacy.

We tent camped here. The facilities are wonderful and well kept. The location is very pretty and there are a lot of lovely trails. The only problems I had with going here for the weekend were out of the campsites control. I could not get a cell phone signal in the camp ground so communication and entertainment was limited. You might think that is a blessing but I found it frustrating. There is also limited eating/ drinking places to go to nearby. At least that we could find. But again that might not bother you. Would definitely go again though.

Crawdads, fishing and tons of fascinating insects!

Nice park but full of ticks and no signs posted for visitors. After our hike, my husband has 3 on him and we found about 6-7 on our dogs

If I had started doing yelp reviews 25 years ago you would have heard me rave about this park to everyone on line but as the years have passed I'm noticing some changes that no longer have me feeling the same as I did. The past several years I've noticed there have been camp hosts here which I'm not especially fond of as a taxpayer. I understand the rangers may not feel they should be spending their time cleaning restrooms or checking firepits for ashes but I've witnessed them sitting in the rather expensive vehicles our tax payer dollars furnish them with doing essentially nothing now that these hosts are here. Occasionally they patrol the area but I remember in years past when they were more engaging with the public precisely because they tended to these hosting responsibilities. It may be just me but I'd rather see the state employ a local who lives in the area to come in twice daily to check on & clean the restrooms than to hire an out of state couple who is going to park their unit in one of the rental spaces & set up camp here each season. Many of the state parks have already erected cabins & Yurts that I know don't have a 100% occupancy rate. Can they really afford to offer a retired couple an otherwise rentable space for the entire season? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe these out of state hosts are actually paying a reduced rate to enjoy our parks amenities rather than receiving a wage & in return they agree to act as dorm parents where cleaning restrooms is just part of the deal, idk but I'd much rather see the Division of Virginia State Parks director establish a young rangers in training program to do these menial tasks if the adult rangers feel their time is too valuable to be camp hosts. I want to see our beautiful state parks succeed & remain in operation for generations to come but having 24/7 out of state camp monitors takes away from fully enjoying the state park experience in my opinion. Having said all that the park itself has remain pretty much the same as it was 25 years ago with the exception of a new playground so it's as close to nature as you'll find if you enjoy a peaceful camping experience.

Battle Park is easy to find in the heart of Rocky Mount near the waterfall and mills. Parking can be found in a small lot on the northbound side of the river. Restrooms are very clean with lot of pine trees and a nice mix of paved trails and dirt paths with a view of the river. Great for a quick 20-30 minute stop to stretch your legs and enjoy fresh air with your dog before resuming a long drive on I-95 to your final destination. I think some stores and restaurants are available in the mill area if you need to take a longer break. I'm so glad we decided to visit Rocky Mount, NC even if it was just for a 30 minute pit stop to stretch the legs with our dog!

Baskets range from 300-800(!!) feet. The terrain is awesome, and being there today made me forget I was in eastern NC (I guess hence the name Rocky Mount...) The course design isn't intuitive but using the UDisc app helps. Along with disc golf are also mountain biking trails and walking trails. I also saw people fishing and signs about using a boat ramp. It felt nice and shaded today even in 80-something degree weather. Cant wait to come back again in the fall!

I like visiting these as they are like a little museum in each state park. This visitor center was very interactive and had bright colors with the storyboards. I like that they covered the local ecology, the history of the river and also how we can help make better choices to keep the water safe. In the lobby, there are some taxidermies; you will see a black bear, an owl, a fox and a bobcat that lived in the area. When the fault formed, the water created the cliffs. The cliffs are unique in the layers formed. The white and yellow layers of sand and gravel are remnants of ancient beaches. The Atlantic Ocean once covered the area. Then the dark gray and black layers were made of clay likely deposited by ancient marshes. Between these layers are marine life, seashells, shale, and gravel. These got left behind as the sea levels rose and fell. These formations are 90 feet high and 200 feet underground. Native Americans gathered here, the Tuscarora and Saponi tribes. The river acted as a transportation route and a source of food. They used canoes to go from the coast to the inland forest. The high ground served as a lookout point, allowing them to see anyone approaching. They hunted deer and turkey. The museum has stone tools and other artifacts that were found in the area. During the Civil War, in the Battle of Whitehall (now Seven Springs), the Union soldiers used the higher ground to fight the Confederates. The Confederates were building an ironclad ship (the CSS Neuse). They thought being upriver would keep them safe from the Union ships. They had hoped to retake New Bern with it. The ship survived the battle with only minor damage and was moved to Kinston to have an engine and heavy iron armor added. (The ship can be seen at the CSS Interpretive Museum in Kinston, NC) I liked the phones available for a glimpse into the past from people who were part of the park, and the viewer glasses. The building is air-conditioned, and restrooms are available. There is a small gift shop too. The staff were friendly as they were expecting campers. There is an Overlook for a beautiful view. It is just steps away from the parking lot. The view was stunning. The signs make it easy to find from the visitor center. There are some trails to follow as well if you want to explore more.
