During our near-annual cross country road trips to North Dakota (well, the opposite corner of the state, anyway... outside of Grand Forks) we always try to plan a day to enjoy Theodore Roosevelt National Park. With COVID-19 high in everyone's consideration list, we planned our stops carefully. Of course In this town, most folks looked at us wearing masks like we were "Gulldern Californians" (we are) and acted like we should care what they thought (we didn't.) a few smart ass comments from some real tough guys-- you're a total bad-ass talking to my eight year old daughter like that, Cletus) but nothing worth going to jail for, and I just tipped my cap and wished folks a very nice rest of the day. As for the Convenience Store, it's one of the few places in town this trip that showed real appreciation for my tourist dollars, and kindness just because "Uffdah, yeah you betcha!" Nice people here. We gassed up for our car tour through the national park, bought some drinks and snacks, and even some little trinket for my youngest son. They have more items than you'd think they would... steaks and dairy stuff? Cool beans. OG gas pumps... they work great... if you don't like it, Dickinson is another 35 miles East. I am an early riser visiting a town that doesn't really get moving until around 7 am. So grateful that the "C-Store" is open at the crack of dawn! Hot coffee, those famous, DELICIOUS breakfast sandwiches, and the friendly, helpful staff started my mornings off beautifully. Also, if you're looking for mementos of your trip as you pass through Medora, this place has an array of delightful gifts that range from affordable to more "investment" type prices. Got a kiddo who has $5 burning a hole in their pocket? They've got trinkets and stickers covered! T Shirts, hoodies and hats? Inexpensive but pretty jewelry? Got those too! But if you want something a little more meaningful, there is some lovely pottery, carvings and incredible knives and jewelry - some of which are authenticated as native works. We came into Medora looking for lunch before hiking Theodore Roosevelt National Park and went to the bar and grill next door. After being ignored by their staff for 20 minutes, we went to the Medora Convenience Store and couldn't have done better. They have a "make your own sandwich" station - sub, croissant, or wrap. Meat selection included salami, turkey, ham, and pepperoni. American and pepperjack cheese. Standard yellow mustard and mayo, but also ranch, chipotle mayo, cajun mayo, and a couple other sauces. Really fresh veggie toppings, including lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, banana peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms, and too much else for me to remember. Very low price, IMO. Better than any chain sandwich place in quality and value. The staff was friendly and helpful. The sandwiches were fresh, light, and tasty - perfect for eating in the park. We went back the next morning before driving back to Bozeman to pick up more sandwiches for lunch on the road. They open at 5;30 am! Highly recommend. read more

I only give 2 stars because the breakfast sandwich I had was amazing, BUT...I was there one day and overheard the manager or owner or whatever she was berating the employees. She was coming down hard for no big reason at all. They were working hard to wait on customers and unload things, but the way she spoke to them was unprofessional and she was rude to them. There was only 2 employees working that morning, I saw one employees trying to help someone out with something and she told the other to take some stuff out to the trash or whatever. Meanwhile I was grabbing some things. I saw another person waiting at the counter for a short while, the one that did the reprimanding came out and clearly could have waited on that person but did not help. Instead she waited until the one she Demanded take things out to the trash came in and helped them and the other customer was gone. When the second employee finished helping the third customer in the store I overheard her getting onto them about not helping customers right away even though she Demanded a certain things be done. Automatically she turned around and complained things weren't getting done something about boxes and tripping, something like that, but she did it in front of customers, which is not professional all. On top of if she talked down to them and I feel bad for those employees. She complained about things not getting done when she wanted but didn't seem to take into consideration the fact that the were both busy with things she DEMANDED they did right that second I did hear one of them start to speak up and get dragged to the back after that I do not know what was said but that employee stormed out. From what I can tell someone needs to learn how to treat their employees better if it were me in that position I would have walked out too. As good as the selection and breakfast sandwiches are I probably won't be going back here just based on what I heard. In my opinion it seems like anyone who works there is not happy and I would not be either if I had to deal with someone who flip flopped and used it as an excuse to be rude to people that worked for them. Very unprofessional to do things that way and also not good to treat people in that way no matter the excuse you try to make. I was only passing through but even if I do go through again I will not be stopping at this place again just out of principal. I do not condone mistreatment of anyone. read more

Pretty cool convenience store/gas station. I believe this is the only gas station in Medora. We bought some homemade hash browns and two steaks and a soda. We grilled the steaks while RViing in Roosevelt National park and fried up the hash browns on the stove in the RV. One steak was better than the other and this place would get 4 stars, except that we noticed even though they are the only gas station in town they did not jack up the prices! Yes they are old school pumps, but after hours you can pay at the pay kiosk. We did not fuel up with fuel because we didn't need fuel. All in all, cool store/gas station!!! read more

Lots of reviews about the breakfast sandwiches, and they are spot on. This place is worth the stop if you are traveling through on 94 or staying in Madora. This will be the best breakfast sandwich you will ever eat. Ours were on a buttermilk biscuit with ham and pepper jack cheese, wonderful. There are several options. They also have a fabulous sandwich bar that features hogie rolls or croissants, a variety of meats and a selection of trimmings. We were looking for a place to buy some snacks in the evening and also wanted to pick up something for breakfast in the morning and a lunch sandwich to take into the park. The sing on the door said breakfast sandwiches made fresh every day. In the evening, they did not have any breakfast sandwiches of course, but they did have a heater box that had generic pictures on top that reminded me of the circular eggs you get on the morning buffet at Hampton Inns (and that is not a complement). My wife decided to buy some mini hostess donuts, but I thought I would see what I could find when I went over to get a loaf of bread and some lunchmeat the next day. I walked in around 7, found a loaf of bread, some elk sausage I was going to cut up, a small packet of cookies, and a sara lee style wrapped blueberry muffin. That would have been just fine. I then looked at the case with the picture of the circular egg sandwiches on it, but it was now filled with butcher-paper-wrapped objects labeled ham and cheese, sausage and bacon and pepperjack, etc. It smelled good in there, so I decided to give one a try and got a sausage bacon pepperjack one for $4.50. There were 2 metal cases with signs on them saying close when done, but nothing else. I went to pay and explained to the cashier I was buying things to make sandwiches out of. She then asked if I wanted to make my own at their station. I said I did not realize that was what it was, and went over and opened up one of the cases and it had ham, pepperoni, turkey, salami, various cheeses and sauces, and the other one had banana peppers, msuhrooms, red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and a few other things. On top of the cases were white hoagie rolls, wheat hoagie rolls, and croissants. I had no idea how they charged, I guessed by the ounce, but filled up the roll, went to pay, and they said $5.50 for a sub sandwich. On a croissant it would have only been $4.75. Best sandwich we had on our vacation. and the breakfast sandwich I bough was fantastic. Had all those things mentioned above on a fresh soft bagel, and only $4.50. I could not have been happier. And, I gassed up there before going into the park, they only charged $2.35 a gallon, and when I filled up the rental car in Bismarck later that day, it was more $2.44 a gallon. Friendly people, great food. not just a fair price for gas but a great price for gas - I can not recommend the place more. And, it did not take a rocket scientist to figure out how to flip the lever and gas up the car. read more

There was no reason to treat my husband like he was stupid for not knowing how to use the gas pump. That gas pump is older than my parents. It shouldn't be a shock that we didn't know how to use it. "Haven't you turned it on?" Why the hell would we turn a gas pump ON? This isn't 1940! The "local" chokecherry jelly on the shelves looked completely liquid and disgusting.
