Interested in how Megabus compares to Greyhound and Amtrak? Read on!!! I travel to Michigan between Chicago several times a month and know every nook and cranny of what each transportation service offers. I'll offer a brief summary of the pros and cons. PROs: - Megabus is EXTREMELY punctual. It is BY FAR the most punctual method of transportation between CHI and AA. I have never had my bus be delayed by more than a few minutes (compare this to Amtrak, which averages ~50 min delay every single time I take it. Greyhound, on the other hand, is a whole other animal... if your bus actually shows up, the timeliness is in between that of Amtrak and Megabus.) - Ronny, the most incredible bus driver you will ever meet, works for Megabus and is truly a phenomenal asset to this company. Trust me when I say you'll know who he is if you ever have him as a driver. I've never met someone who loves their job as much as he does! - You get a rest stop at Love's-- a gas station that, I am convinced, survives purely​ off of the business that Megabus provides them. Bathrooms are clean and they have many snack options. No complaints! --- CONs: - Space is cramped (it's a bus after all​!), so if you're taller than 5'7", you'll likely be a bit uncomfortable. In comparison, Amtrak seats are significantly​ roomier and Greyhound usually sells fewer​ tickets (for their own reasons...) so you have a higher chance of having an empty seat next to you. - Bus drivers are not consistent with checking who reserved their seat. I've had multiple instances of other people sitting in my reserved spot, but did not want to make a scene asking them to move. - There was that one really angry bus driver lady (you all know who she is!!!!) who threatened to leave you on the side of the road if she heard your cell phone​ beep. That was fun. Good thing she changed her haircut and pretends to be a different person now because so many customers complained about her lack of professionalism. --- MAJOR TIP for anyone who has LOST LUGGAGE ON MEGABUS: Always, always, always contact the company that Megabus rents their physical busses from (Lake Front Lines for Ann Arbor). When we accidentally left an item on the bus, Megabus failed to contact the driver and the customer service representatives told us there was nothing we could do except wait for them to return our calls. It was miserable. But within 15 minutes of speaking to a 24-hour Lake Front Lines emergency dispatcher, I was in contact with our bus driver and drove to a nearby hotel to pick up the items. I could just say ditto on Roshan's review. Time was when you could get a ticket on this thing for a song. Then I could put up with the crappiness that is a MegaBus experience. Last time I checked though it was a mere 10-20 bucks more for the train for the dates I was travelling. Hmmm. Do your research, if its not an absolutely amazing deal then skip it. Because yes, you wait around like a bum in the elements for an endless amount of time before the trip ever starts, you are then put into uncomfy seating on a bus that is packed to the gills, there is no real service, things are never on schedule and ultimately there will be some miserable moments. Unless you are extremely flexible about travel and willing to be a bit less than satisfied overall, MegaBus may not be a bargain you are willing to suffer. If you are cheap, skinny, short and prepared for any and all issues it can work I guess. Me I am just too freaking old and fat to deal with the hassle. Plus my ride where the air never seemed to work and I arrived at my destination looking and feeling like I had survived an unprepared trek through the Sahara kinda put me off the idea for good. read more

The price is usually reasonable, but not always the cheapest. The driver can be a real jerk. 80% of the times I've taken Megabus, its late. It doesn't show up on time nor does it arrive on time I don't like the fact that they don't give refunds. Many of times the bus driver puts his items on the row of two seats behind him leaving the passengers to find other seats (rude). The wifi is pretty crappy. Sometimes two bus drivers are on the bus. The one that's not driving and sitting on the bus does not share his seat Seats are very uncomfortable There's not much leg room Sometimes the air doesn't work on the bus Just know the shorter the ride, the better! read more

Who doesn't love a trip to Chicago, for less than a tank or two of gas? C'mon people, this is probably the cheapest way to get from Ann Arbor to Chicago, without worrying about anything bad happening to your car (while driving to and from) and not having to pay bucu bucks for parking in Chicago (for out of towners). I've been on the MB, every single time I've gone to Chicago and have not had a bad experience in the past. Sure the seats aren't as new as when they first came out but hello, your not going there first class. One thing that can be annoying is when the driver is speaking into the walkie talkie or the speakers just suck. I'll definitely continue to use the MB when I head out to chitown. read more

It couldn't be worse than this. The way story goes is.... I had a trip from Chicago to Ann Arbor today afternoon. Bus was 10 min late. When all got in, we realized that the air conditioning doesn't work. Sun fell inside the bus through the windows and it got really hot. After 1.5 hour driving when many people started complaining, driver gave a talk to the passengers which I could hardly hear it at the back. It turns out she had told we can keep going for three more hours to Ann Arbor or we can return to the Chicago and change the bus!! Since no one including me wants to lose 3 hours at least, we all agreed to keep going. After another two hours driving, she stopped the bus for gas and 15 minutes rest (as she said at first). Believe it or not, she made us to wait for one hour!! She was so angry and rude, When I asked her why...she didn't even turn her head to look at me and didn't hear a word from her. Mega bus is actually a terrible operation. I spent 5 hours last night both on line and calling the reservation line, only to learn that the system was down. Spent another hour the next morning same situation. Finally after 24 plus hours the system was up. Ok this happens, but when I dropped my son and his friend off at the stop in Ann Arbor, they were not allowed on the bus because they were 16 and a half. (my son has been on this bus several times before by himself, never a problem!) No where online or the ticket does it say 17 years or older. Ok my bad, however...... the way the bus driver treated us. Total lack of compassion, did not say "I'm so sorry", no, she yelled at us, I don't get paid to baby sit. These comments (about the over the top rude bus drivers), are pretty common at Mega bus. Use this service at your own risk..... read more

Megabus Bad Experience #287 - "The Drunken Bus Driver": We baked in the 5pm Ann Arbor sun, waiting for the Megabus to pick up 70+ of us. Finally 2 buses rolled in, dropping people off from Chicago who promptly informed us that the reason the bus was so late was that their driver had been pulled over and arrested on the side of the road in Michigan for driving while impaired. How he made it from Chicago to Michigan with 54 people in his bus is beyond me. The bus then left A2 and headed to Detroit, with the extremely angry driver (the one who had to go pick up the abandoned bus from the side of the road) yelling at us that he was going to Detroit, would get a new driver, and send the bus back for us in Ann Arbor. At this point we called dispatch who provided us with a new departure time of 7:15pm. So we left and returned at 7:00pm to find a virtually empty parking lot. It seems the bus had come early, picked everyone who was there & would fit on the bus up and left a few others. The dozen of us who were left repeatedly called dispatch and were informed a second bus was being sent and would be there in "15 minutes". Dispatch was convincing in their ruse, they would even put you on hold while they "called the driver" and would come back saying "she'll be in there in 15, she's really close...". Lies lies lies... An hour and a half later she arrived. The poor people who'd caught the bus at the first stop in Detroit had gotten the "she'll be there in 15 minutes" for 3.5 hours so they never even got to leave the stop at all, they'd waited the whooole time. Megabus Bad Experience #437 - "The Sub-Zero Arrest Threat": Megabus does not provide any shelter while you're waiting for the bus, so be prepared... it's hot in the summer and freaking freezing in the winter. On this February day the wind chill was biting and the bus was over an hour late. The Megabus group headed into Union Station (Chicago) for some warmth. The Chicago Police Department promptly arrived, notified everyone that Megabus does not rent space, that everyone was trespassing and would have to go back outside. When the bus finally arrived, it was a single-decker (the double-decker had broken down) so the driver said "if you get a seat, you're coming with us, if you don't get one, you're not". I think you can imagine the scramble. Several people were left behind and offered "refunds". I'd rather get where I'm trying to go than get my $15 back... Megabus Bad Experience #721 - "The Vomiting Lady": At the beginning of the 5 hour ride from A2 to Chicago, the lady in front of us promptly leaned over and vomited into the aisle. She then, not wanting to be stuck by the rancid smell, stumbled to the back of the bus to get a fresh seat, leaving her vodka bottle on her old seat and everyone else to deal with the odor for the next 5 hours. Megabus Bad Experience #639 - "The Almost-Breakdown": The bus left Chicago 45 minutes late. Trust me, standing on that corner gazing down Canal St. waiting, hoping that the bus will come around the corner at any moment suuuucks. Calling dispatch is useless because you and the guy next to you who calls separately will get completely different answers. Finally we got on the bus and made it about 15 minutes down the road before the driver got on the PA system - "sorry guys, bad news... the check engine light is on and the transmission is making a noise...we gotta go to the garage and check it out". So we got a nice double-decker bus tour of the South Side of Chicago as we were taken to the bowels of the Megabus operation -- the garage. A mechanic hopped on the bus, revved the engine, and declared us good to go. The rest of the drive was uneventful, minus the driver pulling the bus to the shoulder of the highway twice during the trip to use the bathroom. BOTTOM LINE: Great prices.... and you get what you pay for. I have two words for you: NEVER AGAIN. If anyone wants to carpool on the Chicago/Ann Arbor run, message me. I promise to actually answer my phone, provide an accurate time frame of when we're departing, and only drink a Red Bull. read more

Save yourself the deep physical and mental anguish!!! Okay first and foremost a few things why you shouldn't take the bus (the executive summary): 1) It is never on time (arrival or departure). 2) The seats are extremely uncomfortable and barely recline. 3) There is no process for the loading of luggage or passengers and creates a chaotic frenzy. 4) The bus stop is not covered so in less than favorable weather you are exposed to the elements snow, rain, windchill, scorching sun, up until the luggage is loaded and you are boarded on the bus. 4) The entire experience make you extremely miserable and wish you had never traveled in the first place. Anyway, I don't want to waste my time stressing again how disorderly the whole experience was but do want to mention one thing which is if you are considering taking a bus to save yourself a drive or gas or money I recommend you consider again as the inconvenience is not worth it!!! read more

You get what you pay for, and then some. I've never had any problems with Megabus, using it to get from Ann Arbor to Chicago a handful of times. No mechanical breakdowns, not running late (even getting there early!). Grateful for the free wifi, it is decent! Two level buses with room to store large suitcases before boarding. The top level sways a bit more so if you get motion sick try to get there early to snag a bottom level seat or sit at the front of the top level. They take rest breaks at nicer gas stations, like Love's, which have clean restrooms and better food options. Wish there were more routes! read more

This is the worst experience I ever had. We had 5 customers waited for the megabus to get back to Michigan from Chicago . We waited for 1 hour there was still no Bus coming. We called the service center , they are so rude! Finally a guy told us it was not a " traditional megabus" but a "substitute bus", and it left an hour ago!!!! We were supposed to look for the other type of bus !!! We were all shocked that there was no sign in front of the bus saying that, how are we suppose to know that??!!! I started complain to the manager they she hang up in me ! I call back again another guy hung up on me again! Three times !!! I swear to god I am not kidding . We had no choice, they just left us here , without even providing a solution !!! Btw she told me it was my fault because I should keep checking my email for notice !!! MegaBus is extremely hit or miss when it comes to service. Inbound to Ann Arbor from Chicago? I had a blast (ignoring the malfunctioning Wi-Fi). Outbound back to Chicago. The buses are thrice overbooked, so we had to wait while another Megabus and a random charter bus were dispatched to us, all while the driver and employee ignored all the waiting patrons who were trying to see what was going on. Also, why don't they add seats or any type of cover in this parking lot? This place was hell when it was hot and stormy. read more

The Ann Arbor park n ride is just a parking lot, which doesn't even provide shelter to stand under if it rained or anything (luckily it wasn't raining but it could've shielded the wind). The way to Ann Arbor from Chicago was comfortable and enjoyable even if it was longer. Leaving Ann Arbor, this bus was about 20 minutes late and she wouldn't let anyone on until she checked everyone's passes. We're not all together doesn't make sense to wait for everyone as they load their bags. She announced each stop as we pulled in so people are scrambling to collect their things. Which seemed a little stressful to me. The wifi isn't working and a majority of the chairs don't recline (I jumped around to find a good seat) and we are going well below the speed limit making us even later than we were before. Probably more of a driver issue but that's a big part of the experience! read more

This bus stop is in a parking lot on State, about 10 minutes away from UMich. Note, if you are getting dropped off on game day, try to go a bit early because there is always a lot of traffic around the area because you have to drive past the stadium. Since Ann Arbor is the second stop from Detroit, they always run a bit behind schedule (10-15 minutes). I was a few minutes late to my trip but I still had to wait for the bus to arrive from Detroit. There isn't any shelter at the stop so try to wait in the car or have the person picking you up come right when you get there so you don't have to wait in the snow. There is a small shelter a few feet away from the stop so you can go seek shelter from the snow there like I did while I waited for my friend to pick me up. read more

Two stars because it's usually reasonably priced and generally "convenient" if you don't mind the high potential for major delays. I had taken the megabus between Champaign and Chicago with great success before, so I was all set to hop on the bus from here to Chicago. The stop is right next to my old apartment, so it was super convenient getting there. But it was cold, and the bus was running half an hour late... an hour late... hour and a half late... I think it finally came in two hours after the scheduled time. Several others waiting with me called Megabus multiple times and were told the bus would be no more than 45 minutes late (after it was already half an hour late). When asked where the bus was, Megabus said that they were unable to contact the driver. Uhh... that doesn't sound so good. The bus finally showed up. Turns out it had been stuck at the gas station down the street for over an hour. So I'm boarding a bus that was broken down until not even 10 minutes ago? Well that's reassuring. Plus I got stuck next to a lovely gentleman who was blasting music obnoxiously loudly. Even after turning up my own volume, I could still hear his music through his headphones over my own headphones. ugh. The return trip was no better. Bus shows up two hours late again. I filed a complaint and said I wanted my money back. I received a code for a free ride in the future instead. Which is useless to me because after this experience, I'm just going to drive. read more

This is the worst company to ride with. I tried to change a trip and customer service was EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNHELPFUL. Three supervisors hung up on me without even letting me speak. Their policy for changing trips is extremely messed up and does not allow you to book different trips for different passengers. I do NOT recommend anyone ride with megabus. read more

Compared to Greyhound this is paradise. The bus was cheap and on time. I didn't have to deal with a million stops or creepers. It was a bus though. Yes, the bathroom smells and the wifi sucks, but it was $10. I would definitely take it again. read more

Inconsistent is the best way to describe how Megabus runs. Service is extremely variable and unpredictable: - Not all buses are equipped with a working Wi-Fi. I've ridden the bus about 6 times and so far, batting slightly over 50% (4/6). - Not all drivers are necessarily courteous. Some of them use a pre-recorded intro like you're on an airplane, others are very, very cordial and love people talking to them, even while driving. Some are very helpful, others are just there to do a job. - Not all buses are on time. Half have been delayed up to 45 minutes, others arrive promptly on time. You never know what to expect with when your bus will arrive. If there are delays, don't count on Megabus alerting you necessarily. I did receive an e-mail once about a Megabus delay, but it was about an hour after the bus was supposed to arrive. Thanks for the update, fellas. - Not all Megabus personnel will help you with your luggage. In Minneapolis, the guy just pointed to the open compartment in the back to place my suitcase. In Chicago, they asked where I was going (Ann Arbor or Detroit) and then sorted the luggage appropriately. - Some buses have the outlets in front of you at your knees. The older buses have them overhead (110V outlets), either where the lights usually are, or they are overhead. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't so this is also subject to variability. One consistency for all buses; they are going to be big-time air-conditioned, so make sure you wear long pants. In summary, make sure you have plenty of backup plans to kill the time in case the Wi-fi doesn't work, or you don't have a working plug to recharge your computer, phone or tablet PC. Space is at a premium so laptop users may be out of luck if you are sitting next to another passenger or the passenger in front of you reclines his or her seat. read more

My boyfriend and I often travel Ann Arbor to/from Chicago. The choice is always between Megabus and Amtrak. So I will compare: Price: Amtrak is almost always more expensive, sometimes significantly so. That is the only reason I ever take the Megabus. Being on time: Both have severely disappointed on occasion. Seating: Amtrak is more roomy. View: After dark, the same. When it is light, the train is much nicer. Smoothness of ride: Megabus is very shaky. Amtrak is much nicer. Time: Comparable. Megabus could be much faster than the train if they got rid of that weirdly timed 1/2 hour stop at the Love's/Hardees just 1:15 min out of Ann Arbor. Worth noting: the free wi-fi on the Megabus almost never works. I got one page load once when the bus was in the parking lot in Ann Arbor, so it isn't a total myth. You should assume it won't work though. read more

I don't know what people's problems are. Based on their reviews I was somewhat reluctant to give them a shot. I guess people are more inclined to write a review when they are angry. For my 1st experience I was very pleased. The bus arrived a few minutes late but nothing ridiculous. The only problem with the Ann Arbor drop point is there is literally no where to go. I was dropped off on a sub freezing morning. There is a lot of parking but not sure that you can leave your vehicle as it is a U of M lot. The bus was comfortable, with decent leg space especially compared to airlines. The fare was only $26 round trip. So I guess I am the counterpoint to the other reviews. I would not hesitate on using the service again. read more

I found the MegaBus from A2 to Chicago to be just fine. The pros: Ample free parking in A2. The driver and baggage handler were very courteous. Bus departed and arrived ontime. Wi-fi worked fine. Bathroom was clean and functioning. Downsides? Not as 'cheap' as we're lead to believe. My one-way ticket was $33 (cheaper than flying, but certainly more than $1)! There are no overhead bins, so you need to keep your coat, etc. with you. The seats are close together and there are no tray tables. One thing they should change: the bus stops in Marshall, MI for one-half hour. Why do they stop one hour into a 4.5 hour trip? I would suggest they schedule their leg-stretching break further into the ride, when people really need it. So, room for improvement but far from the horror stories that others have reported. read more

Generally, the Megabus is convenient and hassle free. This time, I paid to reserve a seat and when I got on the bus, someone was sitting on my seat. The driver told me "no worries" and "it's pointless to reserve a seat." If it's pointless to reserve a seat, they should NOT charge people for it. How hard would it be to place "reserved" signs on seats that people PAID for? I think I'll drive to Chicago next time. read more

Never ever again. On the way to Chicago - bus was over one hour late. I almost cancelled the trip and wish I had because on the way back the wait for the bus in Chicago was over TWO HOURS past scheduled time. At least when you fly there is better service and knowledge when it comes to delays. Unfortunately when I called Megabus both times to inquire about the bus delays the phone representatives had no idea why and provided me another number to call to see what the delay is and ETA. The second phone number also had no idea. So overall - very late buses and terrible customer service. Never again, I value my time. read more

This is for Zero stars. I don't write many reviews but in this case I had to share this first experience with Megabus. Our bus was scheduled to depart Ann Arbor at 3:15 on Labor Day Monday to go to Chicago. We were there 20 minutes early and paid the extra to reserve the seat. The bus was 15 minutes late - not a big deal. It was a charter bus, and did not have megabus written on it. The line was much longer than the number of people that could fit on the bus. The driver then announces not everyone would fit in the bus and another bus would be coming in 15 min. It was first come first serve even if you had a reserved seat. So therefore about half the people would have to wait. That bus pulls away. 15 minutes is not a big deal, however after 1 hour went by, several people called in and they said "10 more minutes". Then finally an email alert said the bus would be 60 minutes late. 60 minutes - so is that from now or the time it was scheduled to depart? Well not until 5:35 did the bus roll in. 2 HOURS and 15 minutes late. Another charter bus. It is clear that no other bus was planned originally and they had to scrounge one up. I think this is atrocious. Someone should have at least come over to the bus stop to let us know accurate information about what was going on. People with reserved seats should be able to get on the first bus. Every step along the way for this departure was messed up - from clearly not planning the right number of buses, from the notification of the first bus driver on what would happen next, to the notifications and help from the company, and the handling of reserved seats. This is a great concept but very poor execution. read more

My worst day of my life happened yesterday with the mega bus from Ann arbor to Chicago. 6 Hours delay, with out any on time notification and the worst customer service I have ever experienced... They just put people in an out door bus stop for six hours .. and they kept to tell the lie : the bus is coming in the next 30 minutes!!!! unbelievable..how can they treat their customers like that. it seems that they do not care at all.. all the drivers and staffs are so rude and never had any explanation for that.. read more

I have used megabus several times and never had an issue. This time the bus driver kept telling anyone who spoke in a normal voice to keep it down and consider the people around you. Nobody was loud or rowdy, but anytime someone spoke at a normal tone they would be shushed. Even when a person was laughing, she told them to keep it down. If you can not drive a bus with noise, you should find a new job. read more

No parking on site. You have a pick-up location in a mall parking lot, but you can not park there. Forget about parking in a Park & Ride lot, since they do not allow overnight parking. read more

They are using charter bus with broken seats. Years before it was great but now it is horrible. So best way is to arrive 30 minutes earlier to get better seats otherwise you have to sit on the broken ones. read more

Let me start by saying, I've never written a review for anything before. I'd like to make it known that megabus got under my skin. I was traveling from Ann Arbor to Chicago and debating whether to take the megabus or train. The megabus was a whooping $9 cheaper so I foolishly went with that. When I arrived at the poorly labeled departure site another megabus driver said that the bus to Chicago should be there in15 minutes. 35 minutes later the bus arrived. It was only a few minutes after the posted departure time of 9am, so I can't knock them on that. It was a double decker bus so the luggage went in a compartment in the back of the bus, not underneath like most buses. The driver entered this area through a full-sized door and proceeded to open a window for the luggage that was at least 4 ft high. Luckily most people had small bags that were easy to hoist up. Unfortunately, I have a 40+ lb suitcase. I started to bring my suitcase through the door that the driver had entered prior to him yelling at me. Apparently, the bags need to be weighed. Why he couldn't bring it through the door and then put it on the scale, I do not know. I tried unsuccessfully several times to lift my suitcase up to the window. He wouldn't help. Another girl in line who saw me struggling was nice and offered to help. While on the bus, the boy across the aisle from me was smoking an electric cigarette, smoke included. Let's just say, I'll take the train next time. read more

It appears that I am the only satisfied Megabus Rider posting a review. I had a stupendous ride from Chicago to Ann Arbor this past Thursday. The bus departed on schedule at exactly 2:00 p.m. It was a smooth & quiet ride, made one stop for a 30 minute break and arrived ten minutes early. I have already booked another trip but this time I made it round-trip from Ann Arbor to Chicago and back again at the end of March. I hope that some of the complaints posted by others have been resolved. It was my understanding that the tickets were cheaper than $36.00 but I can't complain because the experience was well worth it. Megabus is the best kept secret in my neck of the woods. It's too bad that others have experienced overbooked busses, late departures and drunk drivers. If that would occur next time I will discontinue travel with Megabus. read more

They can be as late as they want to, charge u extra $$ if ur bag (in their opion...no scale availible) is over 50 pounds and stand behind their no refund policy regardless of poor customer service. I will not be traveling with them again. read more

I think everyone agrees that it is dirt cheap and you get what you pay for. I haven't had to wait outside in the cold/hot for that long but the buses are not always on time. The first one I used did not have wifi and my power outlet didn't work. The most recent trip the emergency exit on the roof was broken so it wouldn't close. Is it normal for mega bus to operate with under par charter busses? Because that is what happened to me and 9 friends who travelled together and paid extra for reserved seating. The bus smelled like the porta-potty that was in the back, it was overcrowded, no electricity, no wifi and the driver asked for directions? Really? I was trying to get from Providence to New York. I searched for the bus stop information on google and waited at the stop for 20 mins. Afterward a random guy told me that the bus stop had changed but I had already missed the bus. Atferward I called the customer service and here are the answers I got. Frist call: i'm sorry but it's your fault that you missed the bus, and you HAVE to buy a new ticket for your next ride. Second call: You have to buy a new ticket, but you can get refund. Third call: It's your fault that you looked at google for our information.You should have gone to our website! and also since it's your own fault, you don't get a refund As a website, how could you blame your customer for looking up information on google?!! And more over, how could you, as a company, accuse your customer for something that they definitely did not do wrong and is also a victim from?!!!! Now I have to pay 80 dollors for just one bus ride. I should have just booked Peter Pan. At least they are so much more reasonable. I'm really impressed for how bad and in-consistent the service is. It's a hit or miss with the costumer service and the clientele isn't the classiest, but the prices can't be beat and often the buses aren't packed so you can have your own two sets of seats. read more
