Of course being the middle of the night we just wanted to sleep and didn't think to call reception because honestly who's brain works at 1am and who wants to move rooms at 1am anyway?! So when we complained on checkout we were told we should have called reception. But that doesn't change the fact the roof of a hotel room that we are paying to stay in shouldn't leak in the first place!!!!.... and then the breakfast buffet.... I don't have many words for that apart from YUCK!!!! How do you even stuff up cooking bacon? I didn't know it was possible. But somehow they managed to. And the tomato with rank smelling cheese on it? Just why???! Scrambled eggs that were so dry I couldn't get them on my fork and the coffee... don't get me started on the lukewarm coffee. Blerghh!!! Never staying here again that's for sure.

We had organised late check in and they were pleasant and kind to deal with when I wS organising that over the phone. They also rang when we landed to check when we would be arriving. The place is so close to Melbourne which is a huge bonus for the price. There was a car park out the back so no street parking. The night manager was kind and helpful. When we got to our room we were impressed. The bathroom was large and lovely - free tea and coffee as usual, nice tv and comfy bed - what more can you ask for? The one complaint I can see people making but didn't bother us is the walls are quite thin so you can hear people around you. (At one point the bathroom coughed haha)

Being the idiot foreigner I was, I opted to stay here when I first moved to Melbourne as an…read moreinternational student. This place is ridiculously overpriced because it knows it will get money out of chumps like me. I had a four-month lease at $200/week on a compartment smaller than most cubicles I've worked in. Despite the cost this place has its good points. First, it's located about 5 feet from the tram stop so you have easy access to many places. If you want to get to the city faster, the metro is a short brisk walk in the same direction. Need groceries? Woolies and Preston Market are nearby, too. It isn't the closest to RMIT or La Trobe but it offers a bus shuttle service to both unis so you don't have to pay for PT. There are many amenities that are fairly decent including the pool, gym, outdoor barbecue area, and a washer and dryer on each floor. Even the café is quite lovely and they make a decent skinny cap. Because it is a hotel I was able to get a wake-up call every day until I bought a phone with an alarm. As for the living conditions, it's cramped. I had tall friends stay here who didn't fit in the beds! Apparently this place is a converted hospital, which might help explain the tiny rooms and ceiling-mounted TV. Also while living here I had my first and hopefully my last experience of having my toilet inside my shower stall. Did I mention this place is cramped? The décor doesn't make it any easier: you will either have walls painted tomato sauce red or if you're lucky like me, mustard yellow. The room has a mini-frige, a microwave and each floor has a communal kitchen. Waiting for the kitchen is a pain and other tenants hoard the room in the refrigerators so it's difficult to coordinate a cooking time. I never bothered with the kitchens and just microwaved all my food. This led to some odd meals but it was worth it in the end. Other tenants typically steal anything you buy and put in the communal refrigerators even if you plaster your name and room number all over it. Due to the high international student turnover, you can make out pretty good if you keep your eye on the communal kitchen. People will leave their cutlery and crockery as well as small appliances when they move out. By the end of my four months I had an impressive collection of mismatched flatware and cups. Though not the best place to live by any means and I pretty much hated it, it wasn't the worst I could do. Bottom line: Great place for a short stay while looking for cheaper housing near uni.

They served your usual pub meals for a good price. I got the chicken schnitzel. It was real chicken, with a good serve of chips and salad. Dad got the roast pork with veges, complete with crackle. It come with a delicious gravy too. A bargain at $12. It's a gambling venue so there's not a lot of atmosphere. But the service is very friendly and the food is good. There are a few pubs scattered around the Preston area, and this one is by far my favourite. Being…read morea part of the ALH group means that there is always cheap beers available, and it is away from the main shopping area which means that it is also pretty quiet. Sure, they don't play all of the football games that I would like to watch, but then again there are other pubs I go to to watch the football. Being a suburban pub means that it is also going to have pokies, but that is not really a big deal for me (even though I really don't like poker machines - there are much more sophisticated ways of losing money than putting it into a machine with flashing lights and annoying sounds).

For a sports bar there was very little on TV but the races. We made the most of it but it's probably not worth visiting unless you're keen on gambling.
