However, one of the catches is that it does take quite a while to actually get down here, depending on where you happen to live of course. Still, as a railway station, this place certainly does work quite well, and the trains are sort of regular, at least as far as Melbourne trains are concerned.

We visited the Mornington Peninsula on an overcast Melbourne day. The moment we walked inside Polperro winery, we were greeted by a retro inspired lounge with funky furniture and ambient lighting radiating from legit candlesticks. SWOON. I am not sure what else Polperro could offer to make it more appealing. It boasts a new cellar, villas for overnight guests and a cracking bistro with outstanding food. The only complaint was that the gnocchi wasn't great, and quite pricey. I can't wait to go back, the setting in particular makes for a great day out. It was a special day to remember.

A local tour bus driver recommended Polperro as THE place to eat on the Peninsula. He's not far off, although there is a lot of worthy competition. Polperro is situated in a very picturesque part of Red Hill. As with many of the winery restaurants in that area, it has magnificent views, which were sadly spoiled by the terrible weather that enveloped the area on the day we visited. No matter. We were warmly welcomed and seated at a very comfortable table. Polperro offers a degustation menu only, which you can match with wines. I'd recommend that you do so, if only because it means you will get dinner and show with one of the most entertaining sommeliers you will ever have the pleasure to meet. Polperro is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. The food and wine match is perfect. Serves are generous. Trust me, you are sated at the end of lunch here (and I believe that Polperro is open only for lunch). I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of the food. It is prepared with impeccable technique in all areas of flavour and presentation. Not one dish disappointed. This is right up there with the very best the Peninsula has to offer. As I said, it's not cheap, but it offers good value for what you get. If you want a special occasion lunch, this is the place.

You can ride in one from $129 or drive one from $199. My partner had just turned 30 and his parents got him his dream gift, an hour in each car. With four locations (Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, St Kilda, Scoresby) to pick from we went with Mornington. You have to book it in advance, call to confirm the date and time, these guys run on a schedule. The two owners are so down to earth and funny. One of them stays driving the car with you as a passenger to explain the gears and what you have to do as a driver. Then you swap, he's in the passenger's seat giving you directions for the route. For the second car, my partner opted to have me as a passenger, at an extra cost. So we both got in the car, and followed another guide car. It was interesting to be in the low passenger's seat for the second drive. But hey, cars aren't my thing, so I took on the role of photographer. In the end, they do take shots of the driver with the two cars. And those become available to download off of Facebook. You can also buy a USB of video from the entire drive. You get an inside camera, the outside car view and tons of loud car growls. All in all it was a good experience, my partner and his dad couldn't say enough good things about it.

Kiosk and bait shop next door, but otherwise a fair walk into crib point for limited stores (general store, post office, cafe, home style restaurant/bar) can get the train as Stony Point is the end of the line. However services are quite spaced so this area is best suited to the organised, or drivers. Facilities were basic but clean. Camp kitchen was well sized. Overall though if you aren't into fishing, and you're not in need of a pet friendly park, I'm not sure what the draw card would be.

They really do go the extra mile (well I would venture a couple of miles actually) to make you feel welcome.
