Mello Velo is an approachable and professional bike shop which can cater to a wide a variety of cycling needs. They carry a a broad range bikes, from road bikes to BMX to mountain bikes, e-bikes, even a a front loading cargo bike. Brands they most often carry are Specialized, Surly, and Kona. They also have a good selection of used bikes and used parts. The care they have in tune-ups is great- my step-thru 80s Fuji is given as much love as my shiny new tourer. They're great about explaining their recommendations on repairs and answering my questions. As with most bike shops they become busier in spring so as the weather gets nicer the turn around tends to be longer. If you're visiting in a car on the weekend it's usually best to park on Canal St. There's a ton of good racks directly out front for locking a bike. read more

I'm a regular when it comes to rollerblade and walked in without a clue of what I was doing. Michael was super helpful in figuring out what I wanted, explaining some options to help me decide, gave me all the pro's and con's, some recommendations on a rack (I couldn't find any that fit my car and neither could he) and some tips on ultimately fitting it in my trunk, and making sure I got the right tool to remove the wheel to make it easier. I wasn't anticipating spending as much as I did, but walking out confidently I had the right set up was totally worth it and he ended up saving me money on the rack anyway cause I didn't need it. I went in to get a new post and seat for my son's 9 year old Diamondback mountain bike. The guy working there whose name is Matt was awesome. He steered me up to a discount bin for a seat that would have normally cost me an arm and a leg for a kid's bike which I didn't need so I got a great deal on a used seat. Matt recognized that I didn't know much about bikes so he put it all together installed it and took a look at my brakes and gears. It is pretty easy to see why these guys are so busy all the time. They offer great service and truly appreciate your business whether you're spending $30 or $3,000 because they want to coming back. When I was studying abroad I used to go to a bike cafe every day. This is like that, but 100% better. Anyways, this place serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they have a full bar, an awesome seating arrangement, with the most cozy, lovely, chic, and wonderful space with big long windows and couches, and they also do stuff with bikes. (Rentals? Selling them? Fixing them? Idk). Just adore the decoration/atmosphere here too. Whoever did the interior decorating (and exterior might I add, bright red and lime green really make this place stand out), should go on HGTV or Food Network. I had the sweet potato hash cakes with some sauce, green onions, and bee pollen. So think a hipster, vegan & vegetarian friendly, and modern menu. The sweet potato cakes were tasty and fine, until I realized they were absolutely undercooked, and a bit raw, after seeing the more crispy and cooked pictures while looking them up on Yelp. Which I don't know what to make of...it's like eating cake and you're like "oh this is pretty okay" but then your mom tells you she hasn't put frosting on it, and then you're like "ohhhh." It just wasn't how it was meant to be. I also had the pumpkin creme brûlée which was so fall perfect and creamy and just the right amount of sweetness. My dad had the butternut squash Mac and cheese. Ugh I wish I got that! The pasta was shaped like little cones with ruffled ends and the cheese was salty and sharp and the best complement. He also had the personal apple crisp skillet. It came which homemade whipped cream (come to think of it, so did mine lol) and it was piping hot. It had the most delightful spices in it too. Oh! I can't forget the most warming, soothing, wholesome, and delicious chai oat milk turmeric latte. I have not stopped thinking about it. My roommate and I actually tried making oat milk but we both didn't think it was strong enough to go in coffee, and we were confused as to what to do with it. Now I will be whipping up chai lattes with my homemade oat milk. Also, turmeric is pretty fabulous and adds the most whimsical color. Okay please come here! First of all....anyone here an OG and remember the Mello velo on wescott street? I went on a really awkward and long first date there in college (before darren) ((I shouldn't talk about ex-bfs lol)) and I cried after bc the guy really liked me and my feelings weren't working and I felt bad. ANYWAYS. Mello velo to me was always that cutesie little coffee shop that you could never find the dang entrance to that had ok coffee and bomb sandwiches. Lol that's pretty much what it is now it just had a MAJOR glow up. It's still hard to find the entrance, the coffee is still ok, and the sandwiches are still bomb. Ambiance? Amazing. Hip insta posts galoreeeee because that's all us dumb millennials care about now a days. Their menu has definitely expanded. They have a bar now with like beer? Ok sis. Sub-par brews that weren't rated well on untapped (the amazing beer app go download now) so I didn't even go there. The food is solid. I've never gotten anything I didn't like. I would deff go for the breakfast sandwich. It's not like fine dining but for a cafe they are killing the game. Also I've never had to wait very long or search for seating here. So that's cool bc no seating makes me really grumpy. Also is anyone else LIVING over the mix of a coffee shop and a bike shop? Like hellllloooo are we in Cali? I love the new store but miss the old neighborhood on Westcott. The current neighborhood is gritty at best, scary at worst. Two weeks is a relatively long time to get my bike serviced, but the value is real. I had to ask to get them to offer to replace my tires. I think this reticence to suggest upgrades occurs because they respect the limited budgets of their clientele - principally SU students. The tune-up took substantially less than the promised 2 weeks. They are clearly busting ass (I suppose that bicycle repair dudes rarely stress too much LOL) to get back to a 5-day wait for a tune-up. The bike looks and runs great. read more

What a fabulous place. Doing the Erie canal and had a bit of an "off". As we pulled up we were greeted with a really friendly offer of help... bikes were rushed off into the care facility (shop). While they were being fixed had a gorgeous smoothie and great food. Overall it is worth crashing to have the excuse for visiting. If you are doing the Erie canal ride make a half mile detour to visit. read more

I had a great experience there today that I had to share it. I stopped at their booth this past Sunday at the Westcott Street Fair. They were advertising free light bike tune ups, but I was a wee bit late and Steve took the sign down but said he would still honor it later. Today I showed up and he was true to his word. He really gave more than a light tune up by adjusting the chain, oiling the chain and other components, checking/adjusting the brake cables, and topping off the air in the tires. He also shared some good advice on maintenance and winter riding. The next time I need some service I'm going to go to them. The store is small but packed with bikes and accessories. Riding home was a pleasure, much smoother. And they are the hippest bike shop in town. Check them out. read more

While playing golf a few days ago, the parking cable on my golf cart snapped leaving it unusable. So, after being told golf carts can't be fixed, someone recommended I try a bicycle repair shop since the brake cable on a bike is similar to a golf cart's. So I brought it over to Mello Velo, they tried but didn't have the part. So, I ordered the part and got instructions and brought it back to Mello Velo. They fixed it! Not only that, their charge was extremely reasonable since it was not an easy job and not their usual business. I loved their "can do" attitude and friendliness!!! I recommend them highly. read more

Nice setting. Bar room a little too bright, as was the area with the two booths. The front area of the dining room with the couch and chairs, while cozy for coffee or even lunch, didn't seem to work for dinner service, IMHO. Steak Quiche was awesome as was the veggie burger. read more

Awesome place! They have a great selection of new and used road and mountain bikes as well as a ton of accessories. I came in not knowing much about what I wanted but the owners were extremely friendly and helped me out. I ended up getting a used road bike in great shape. They do a lot of tune ups, pretty much anything you would ever need. Would definitely go back to for all of my biking needs. Would recommend to everyone, great little local shop! Best shop I have ever done business with. I ride in all seasons and finally killed my road bike. I needed a new ride and MV took excellent care of me with an extremely low price and really good customer service. I've bought two bikes here and have had multiple tune-ups/adjustments over the last three years, and I always look forward to talking with Neil, Steve, and their rotating mechanics. While their current space is terribly small, they are supposedly moving to a larger location in the next few months. Here's hoping they are able to keep the same DIY vibe there as this space has. Prices are on point and they have a large selection of roads, hybrids/commuters, and even a few kids bikes -- both new and used -- and tons of accessories. I just bought a bike there today. Yesterday Kyle who works there was so helpful in answering my questions and helping me pick a bike. I am training for a duathalon and haven't ridden a bike in almost 20 years. He steered me towards a bike in my price range and was so helpful. When I went in today to purchase the bike Stephen knew who I was and was able help finish the transaction. He adjusted the seat, helped me figure out the different gears and put the bike and rack on my car. I could not have asked for better service! read more

SCAM CITY! Don't buy all these 5 star posts....it's just freinds and employees. I Purchased a Deluxe Bike Tune up through Groupon from these guys. Through a hectic travel and personal schedule, I missed my window for getting the work done. I attempted to redeem the voucher a week after it expired....Thinking a few business days would not be a big deal, i was dead wrong. They laughed in my face when i tried to redeem my voucher a week late. (this is not a coupon for free service, I PAID $65 for this voucher!) They said they were too busy to deal with me and that I should have redeemed the voucher before it expired!!! I get the premise, and agree if i was trying to redeem a coupon (free service) or was a year late, i get it.....but i PAID $65 dollars for service that is now being declined! I was stunned. - A few business days late and "hit the trail buddy"? "Thanks for the easy $65.00!" I'd avoid this place at all costs. If they will nail me on a technicality on a voucher, it is probably not an isolated incident, but a way of doing business. At minimum if you see a voucher or coupon deal for this outfit, don't do it. they'll find the fine print and rip you off. AVOID THESE SCAMMERS !!!!! read more

Me and my husband moved from Ohio and needed to get a bike and we found this place online. It got our attention bc we thought it was neat they had a café alongside the bicycle shop. As soon as we walked in we knew we were in the right place. The owner Steve knew exactly what I wanted and needed! We left with a bike within our budget and even an invite to join in their weekly rides! I will DEF recommend this place to anyone. The staff is awesome and personable and they really know their stuff on bikes! We're even returning with my husband's bike to get "tweeked" to his liking, which Steve recommended before just purchasing a new one. And while we waited, we sat and had a lavender vanilla latte at their café, which was delicious. They even care to have a place to relax while your new tires are being put on! read more

I went in to buy a road bike - upgrading from a cheapo hybrid. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Had several choices between new and used bikes. Invited me outside to test drive the bikes and I had his full attention. He pointed out the pros and cons of each bike and was geniuinely interested in my feedback to sell me the best bike for me. Absolutely no pressure sales. He allowed me plenty of time to decide which bike was right for me. All my questions were answered without making me feel silly or like i was wasting his time. I am incredibly happy with the level of service as well as the bike itself. I am completely confident that they will stand by their product should I have any issue. I cannot recommend more strongly - if you are looking for a quality bike and want to be treated like a valued customer, Mello Velo is THE place to go! read more

I love Mello Velo for lots of reasons. Coffee in the morning, beer in the afternoon, wine whenever I feel like it. But please, somebody - anybody - teach them how to make eggs and potatoes. I ordered the Farmer breakfast today, which is about as basic as breakfast can get. The potatoes were dark brown and fried to a greasy crisp - they were like what's left on the plate after you eat a portion of fries at a greasy spoon, which is okay if you order fries at a greasy spoon, but not if you order breakfast at Mello Velo. It seemed like they were shaken out of a bag straight into a deep fryer. Seriously, they were that bad. But even worse were the eggs. I asked for them over easy - I like my yolks runny (and as a former line cook I admit that I'm a little fussy, but c'mon, eggs over easy is pretty, well, easy). When my server brought my breakfast, one egg was over medium, at best, but the other was over hard - really hard - with a solid and pale yellow yolk. I don't often do this, but I sent them back and asked for new ones. It took them about 15 minute and when my server finally came out, BOTH eggs were over hard. Solid, brown and rubbery. At least the cook is consistent. By that time I had lost my appetite and simply gave up. Ugh. They comped my breakfast, which was nice of them, but I would happily have paid for properly cooked eggs. I'll be back. There are a lot of things to love about Mello Velo. Unfortunately this morning's breakfast is not one of them. read more

I took my bike in as I had popped the tube in my back tire and needed it changed. They told me to wait outside for a few minutes while they changed it, turns out they just pumped it up and gave it back to me and charged me for changing my tire. I took my bike home, left it for a couple of hours and they tire was completely flat again!!!! Disappointed to say the least. read more
