I was searching for an "unusual" store... Really I was looking for a place where I could find last-minute Christmas gifts that my family hadn't "seen" already. I recently visited the Mellow Monkey with a friend . It was definitely not what we expected . They did have some nice things but a lot of similarities. The location was a bit sketchy it's down a long road we saw no cars until we got there it's a warehouse but the store was very small and tight quarters . This place is an example of very impressive advertising. Products are cheaper and there's more variety at a Marshall's or a T. J. Maxx. I'm sure people are dissuaded from leaving anything but a glowing review. They don't want to be called "petulant" or some other insult from the unprofessional business owner. When you feel faint and pull your mask down to get some air and the store owner tells you to put it on and go outside if you feel faint....you've got to be kidding me? How about a chair? This place was completely rude to us as soon as we entered the building. I get being safe but then there is being utterly disrespectful (owner telling me to pay attention to him as I look at the store for a minute). I am a physician so believe me I know the extent of this virus but how they handled the situation was not appropriate. I do not recommend anyone to go to this store. I would never spend a penny of my money here and it's unfortunate because they do have unique cute things. People spend your money at the local hard working good stores not the arrogant better than you attitude store owners. Disgusting!! To the owners comment. My bfs and I masks were on as we entered the store! I have been to many stores that also uphold the integrity of their stores and the concern and well being of staff and employees and have never been treated with disrespect. Having recently been to Nantucket all the stores require full mask coverage as well as hand sanitizer upon entering. They also have limited # of individuals in the store and policies that don't allow trying on clothes. In all of these stores, I have been politely reminded of the rules if they felt that I wasn't upholding all of their specifications. Never been treated as I was a child and being reprimanded. My daughter (who is well-behaved and does not act out in stores) accidentally broke something at this store and the owner was incredibly gracious. My daughter felt badly about it and didn't know what to expect because this never happened before. The owner gently told her "it's ok accidents happen" and was genuinely kind to us. We will come back anytime we need to buy gifts now because of this interaction.. and for the unique local/handmade items they sell. The situation could've went differently and caused my daughter to feel worse than she already did for making a mistake that anyone could make but this kind act taught her a lesson without shaming her. I've gone in on several occasions pre pandemic and was helped beyond normal customer service. During pandemic I was online shopping and reached out via message and was helped as well. The owner went out of his way to make sure what I was ordering was in stock before I placed my order and showed me similar items in case it was not. I usually get lots of holiday gifts there and birthday gifts there because he offers such cute and unique items. He takes pride in his shop. I appreciate how hard they are working to keep the shop safe in a pandemic. But what I most appreciate is the monthly charity he donates to.
